    BCBS TX Revision

Hello, I have BCBS(not Tx)...the coverage was for one bariatric procedure per lifetime and in order to get a revision approved, there had to be an issue from the primary procedure. Once my physician proved my primary procedure failed (proved through EGD tests, existing comorbidities, gallstones/gallbladder complications that would be removed during revision) my revision was approved very quickly without a wait period. In my insurance submission, all of the test results were included even my gym membership to show I was continuing to make efforts on improving my health. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    March-April Rny-ers

Pretty good I think. No complications, just some minor discomfort after eating the first few days. It's getting better every day. The Staples are driving me nuts. But if that's my biggest problem so far, I'll take it. Feels like I'm starting to get hungry, but it's a different feeling. More of a mental hungry without hunger pains. Following the diet exactly though.

    Very discouraged op 1/11/18

Thank you to those that are supportive in your words. This is the first topic I have posted and honestly I hesitated to post it because I didnt want to discourage anyone from getting the surgery (since there are some that have not had the surgery yet). But I was hoping for constructive information. I am having to learn how to eat all over again. I had a Lapband put in on Feb 2011 and recently had several complications with it. My stomach is much bigger now than what it was because of what was going on with my band. Yes I have lost 27.2 pounds but that was as of January 24th. I have not lost 1 pound since then. I am eating exactly as my surgeon suggested. I have joined several blogs to see what others are eating but my problem has been that I never get "full". I eat as much as directed but still feel extremely hungry. I have somehow developed a sensitivity to dairy which I never had so it is hard to get most liquid protein options in without instantly needing to run to the bathroom. My taste buds have been strange since as well. I have spoke to and seen my surgeon several times to address my concerns but he and I are not quite sure what is going on. I work 2 jobs, averaging 16 hours a day. One is extremely active. So I am not just sitting around eating all day. I am doing everything possible to better myself mentally and physically but nothing has happened. Truthfully I regret posting this whole topic. Right now I am very discouraged, depressed and sad and thought this would be a good place to see how everyone else is doing but I was wrong. Thank you for the lecture from one of you. Much support should be given here. I hope to find out how to delete this topic as its a set back for me. Can anyone tell me how to delete it? Or can I just delete my profile and it go away??

    Scared thinking of canceling surgery

you are most definitely morbidly obese. I was much more afraid of my obesity killing me than a surgeon. my viewpoint was that if people who are 600lbs+ are surviving surgery, me with a mid 40's BMI should be smooth sailing. I knew i was a heart attack waiting to happen. Please ignore anyone suggesting a band. they categorically have no clue what they are talking about!!!!! Lapbands have horrendous complication rates... worse than the others put together. I could not roll my eyes any harder. the fact that that was suggested to you should automatically discount their opinions. My band nearly killed me and caused permanent damage to my esophagus. my experience with it is very very very common. my doctor says any doctors using a band today should be sued for malpractice. if you are looking for a procedure that is reversible if you need it...that is called a bypass.

    Can't lose any more!!

please please please see the doctor about your heartburn. GERD is the most common complication with the band and over time can lead to cancer. It is why I ultimately revised to bypass in a hurry. do not let it go untreated. mine caused permanent damage, make sure you are getting it treated.

    Esophagus stretches over band

The longer you leave the band in, the more opportunity there is for further damage. i would listen to the medical advice and have it removed. I revised to bypass and have found it much much better. I have never heard of someone who started having band complications have them resolve on their own.

    Any February Sleevers?

Surgery had a few complications. While in recovery started to bleed internally. They had to rush me back in to surgery and fix the problem. Finally recuperating. It’s been a rough two weeks. I feel very lucky to be alive. While in hospital they pumped me up with 25lbs of fluid. So since my release I’ve lost 35 lbs. mostly all that fluid they pumped in me. Have lost10 lbs in 2 weeks of my regular weight.

    August Sleevers-How are you doing??

Personally, I eat around 800 on my non-workout days (weekends) but sometimes less depending on how I feel and I’m allowed up to 1500 on workout days because I do two back to back workouts. My weight has slowed significantly but my Hashimoto’s relapsed for an unknown period of time so I was fighting with my thyroid and I’ve been building muscle. I’m down to about 180 and fit in 27 vanity sizing gap jeans the other day so no complaints except my need for a mommy makeover. Developed a complication so solid food is difficult. I vomit A LOT.

    Scared thinking of canceling surgery

The band is more dangerous with higher complication rates than the gastric bypass and gastric sleeve. Most lap band patients also end up doing a revision surgery to bypass or sleeve. The success rate is not as good and fewer surgeons are performing this operation.

    February 2018 Success Stories

Hey everyone! So happy to have found this thread to share the journey. I had gastric sleeve 2/10, 1 mo out and lost 26 lb so far. I had lost a lot in the first week or so and then stalled for over a week. I also had a complication and was admitted for a blood clot. That sucked, but now feeling pretty good. My sleeve seems pretty tough so I have to have good willpower to stick to the proper diet and get in enough protein. HW: 260 SW: 256 CW: 230
  12. Thanks Mini Me. Can you tell me about your recovery time, or any complications?
  13. Oh Sara, please don't let someone else talk you out of this. I also had never been "put under" hell i had never been in a hospital except to be born. All my contacts with hospitals had to do with visiting someone and i even avoided that when i could. So i was just a little nervous (insert terrified) about the idea. That One moment of fear has been replaced with day after day and now month after month of improving Health and an improved Life. The last time i was "skinny" i was in 10 grade. 7 months ago i was taking pills for blood pressure and diabetes and my sleep apnea was so bad my doctor said i aged her 5 years when my sleep study came in. The lack of deep sleep for more than 2 years had made me lose large parts of my short term memory. i had to write everything down as it happened to refer back because a day or 2 later i would not even remember seeing someone or having talked to them. Today i take no meds at all and i sleep 9 hrs every night and i havent fallen asleep in the daytime since surgery. Pls dont let a very short term fear about a procedure that has a very low complication rate stop you from having a much healthier and happier life. It will be worth it. Stay strong for a few more weeks and you will have a chance at a different life. This surgery is a chance to live in a different way that is both harder (mental ) and easier at the same time. I had truly forgotten what it was like to go about my day without my weight being a consideration in any way. I still have what i call the HARD 50 to go but i have already won this cause i feel amazing and i feel alive and i could not have said that 7 months ago. Pls dont give up when you are so close.
  14. Elsee, you need to have someone near your home who is willing to do your follow up care. Someone you can all in case of emergency, or if you have concerns. Complications are not super common, but they do occur. Sometimes weeks and months down the road. Do your research to make sure you're prepared.

You should be scared. It is major life altering surgery. I was terrified going into surgery and guess what????? I came out fine with zero complications. All you have to do is show up. You will be put under and the rest is up to your surgical team.
  17. So, I'm considering weight loss surgery. I meet the BMI requirement and other chronic conditions such as GERD and sleep apnea. I have my 1st mental health eval., plus first MD visit, folliwed by a Nutrition 101 class soon. I have been told what our insurance will pay. I'm wanting feedback on those who have had surgery. I know everyone is different. But I'm trying to weigh my choices. I'm wavering between gastric bypass and gastric sleeve. My GERD is very mild. I do not take meds for it, I mainly just watch the types of food I eat, and remain upright after eating. However I don't want to have a gastric sleeve if GERD will worsen, and then have to do more surgery. I am kind of afraid of more complications with gastric bypass. It looks like lap band is not good and usually ends up getting removed. I only have 100 lbs. to lose. Can I get feedback from you experienced WLS warriors? Experiences, side effects, advice etc.
  18. Try everything on you already have, it will be like a free shopping spree right in your closet! I have a question though, I am new to all of this and my surgery is not even scheduled yet, but the nurse of our group said people are generally able to be back to work in 1 week. Did you have complications to be out for 6 weeks? I don’t have that kind of benefits with my company where I could be paid for that amount of time.
  19. Hello, I have surgery scheduled for March 12 and I’m thinking of backing out. I had dinner with my family last night and their all against the surgery. I think the only reason I’m scared is going under the knife...I’m not so much worried about the recovery and such just basic surgery. I know the doctors are trained professionals I just am getting anxious as the day nears... The main reason my family is against it is their worried the sleeve is irriversable and I may have complications. They believe that it’s for morbidly obese people and they claim that I’m not but in reality my bmi is over 45 and I’ve been obese my whole adult life. I know they love me but I want this for myself but their opinion matters a lot to me. This is probably too close to surgery but they said they would feel more comfortable if I did the band. Anyone ever do the lap band? I heard the success rate wasn’t as good? I’m probably wrong. Thank you
  20. How do you know if you have this? What other post op complications are common? I’m traveling for this, so I will stay in town a full three days following surgery. Hopefully any issues will be apparent by then.

    Concerned about support...

I am worried that I might not be able to handle this. I'm not concerned about the cost because my insurance has been awesome. They seem to be on board and just want me to go through the motions (regular doctors visits, showing a consistent weight issue, nutritionists visits, heart and lung testing, etc etc.) I'm worried about myself emotionally and mentally. I have many issues and I thrive on consistency. Any type of change or unease seriously hikes my anxiety. (Diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.) I fear that I will not get much sympathy from my parents who both had gastric bypass surgery. My mother got the surgery more because of serious problems with her stomach and intestines. She is now stick thin and has been for years. My dad lost over 200 pounds but is now gaining weight. They both had complications that made their recovery pretty difficult. They are acting as if this is no big deal. My mother is even trying to plan a road trip about ten days after my scheduled surgery. I feel like my parents think it'll be easy for me because I am much younger (32) than they were when they separately got their surgeries and I am more "strong bodied." I might be and physically I could probably do it with not much problem. I am more concerned that I'm not sure I can handle the stress and anxiety. I gave up my worst coping mechanism (it wasnt drugs but it was pretty unhealthy) 4 years ago because my loved ones were concerned and scared for me. Now, I have given up my cigarettes; I've forfeited my sex drive (sorry to be crude) because the psych meds make it impossible. And in 55 days I'll be giving away my best friend, Food. I feel like I'm giving everything up, I feel like I'm doing this by myself, and frankly I feel very lonely. My partner is amazing but she will love me to death if I let her. She feeds me and insists that I eat more because she wants me to be satisfied and never go without. She is even sending a big box of goodies from New Zealand next month instead of in June as planned because I told her that after the surgery I probably can't eat it. She does not want me to get the surgery because she fears for me but quietly supports (or maybe its better to say she isn't fighting) my decision. I know I need to do this. I know I need to live. I just don't know if I can do it. I don't know if I can do this without breaking... Sorry for the rant. Just needing to vent, I guess... And for anyone interested here are my precious reasons for having the surgery. My nephew, Matthew, my amazing partner, Andrea, and my niece, Lileigh.

    Waiting is the worst part

@FluffyChix is right. For me the "fun" began on February 26th and probably won't end until March 26th at the earliest and that is IF I do not have any post-surgical complications. Surgery comes March 12th for me. Any person who thinks that surgery is the easy way out is just plain ignorant of the whole process. So yes, the waiting is the easiest part. Enjoy it.

    Any March 2018 Sleevers?

I'm almost a week out from being sleeved, and I feel pretty good. I'm not a napper by nature, but every day since surgery I've had to take a nap, and I'm ready for bed by 8pm. I'm just so exhausted. I haven't been tracking my water or calorie intake but I'm gonna start doing that today. I was worried about being exhausted, so I was approved for 3 weeks off of work but I'm bored out of my mind so I'm probably go back part time next week. I have very little pain, and when I do, it's more towards the end of the day. Haven't taken pain meds since day 3 and that was only to knock me out since I was still having to sleep on my back. I've been eating Cream of Wheat (3 TBS uncooked is more than enough), and creamy soups. I usually get one protein shake in a day, as well. My stomach is still making all kinds of crazy sounds. Gas is almost completely gone. All in all, I'd say recovery was far easier than I anticipated it would be. My only complication is this terrible rash under my breasts and upper abdomen, which itches like crazy and doesn't seem to be getting any better. Hubby thinks it's from going braless for three days. Who knows. HW 241 SW 238 CW 218 GW 130 Sleeved 3/1/18

    Seniors and Baby Boomers

55 at time of surgery (August 2016) I'm bone on bone in both knees and had the surgery because my orthopedic surgeon wanted my BMI under 35 before he replaced my knees to limit complications. Highest recorded BMI was 49. Looking at older photos, I'm pretty sure there were points I was over 300 pounds and I'm 5'3". Complications - I'm down to once every 4 weeks for an asthma injectable and have seriously decreased the doses of all other asthma meds. (Haven't had an attack since surgery, either.) I don't take narcotics for arthritis pain any more. I am more active - I'm in the gym 4 hours a week and fence (as in en garde) another 5 hours a week. The biggest complication - I've had to buy a new wardrobe because even the skinny clothes at the back of my closet were too big. I've gone from barely fitting in a 24 to a size 8 headed toward a six. My orthopedic surgeon thinks I can probably get to 65 without having my knees done. The only time I need something more than Tylenol for my knees is after fencing in a tournament with younger fencers (as in kids I could have given birth to young).
