  1. mom 2 6

I've gained and it's my fault.

I just joined this forum today and this is the exact reason. I am 8 years post op and had amazing results. Over 110lb weightloss. I knew all the warnings of gaining the weight back and not replacing food with alcohol etc. I truly thought all the warnings did not apply to me! I kept my post op weight for approx 5 years really without any effort. Ate pretty much what ever I wanted and still no weight gain! I WON- was my thought! Then 3 years ago my mom died and i fell apart. Eating didnt change but the daily wine drinking started. My weight slowly crept up over the next years and i am now 40+ pounds up from where I want to be. I really dont even know what to do. I have an extremely stressful life and really do not want to stop the wine completely so will cut back but I do not know what to even eat anymore! Has anyone else been here? Where did you start? Specifically-what did you do. I feel so ashamed of myself. I feel like i had such a gift of a second chance and have blown it ((.
  2. Its not so much that its the easy way out as its the SUCCESSFULL way out. at 4+ years out, I have to work as hard as ever to get it off, keep it off as any diet in the past, however, the amount of work actually WORKS now. Before, I could work this hard and get very little and temporary success. Now I have a chance of keeping a big chunk of weight off. Will I be at goal forever? .... well not so far, but I am pretty close and that is awesome! Statistics say it is uncommon for someone with this surgery to get to or stay at 100% EWL, and weight gain is most common after 3 years out.... but I really count myself as a success.
  3. Prednisone is quite possibly one of the worst things you could put into your system. When I was a pharmacy tech; we would go out of our way to talk to doctors to find alternatives for it. Perhaps your PCP can give you something else? Besides weight gain, it has some terrible side effects, especially after a procedure like this. What you're experience is quite normal for this medication.
  4. @@Band07 when I told my family I was going to The Dominican Republic for a tummy tuck in 2013 they thought I was crazy. However to this day with weight gain and all I still think it was one of the best decisions I ever made. You just have to keep remembering that this is for you! I'm having surgery on the 25th and couldn't be happier with this decision too!!!
  5. It is my third day and everything went according to plan. Just got home from the hospital and weighed myself for the first time. I was shocked to see that i actually have gained 8 pounds since the day of surgery. How is that possible? Is it the gas, is it the fluids, or is there something else?
  6. Greetings everyone! I had my surger in 2009 and I dropped down to 176, size 12/14. I kept the weight off for a while, but this past year I've gained 20 pounds. In my mind I know what to do, how to eat, what exercise to do, but I just feel like the biggest failure. Believe me, I'm not one to have a pitty party for 1, but lately I've just been feeling so down. I know the VSG is a tool and I know, clearly, you can gain weight back, but I wanted to know if there was anyone else out there like that has been successful, but then gained weight. I haven't gained all of my weight back, THANK YOU JESUS and my size 14 clothes still fit (barely). Size 16 fits better and I DO NOT want to go back in the 200s. Anyone out there like me? I know its all a mental thing, but sometimes having someone to talk to helps. Thanks for reading. -Cyncha21-
  7. There is absolutely nothing easy about making the decision and ultimately having weight loss surgery. It is a mental battle that one fights daily. You simply have a tool to help control the amount of food you put in your body. You, are still in charge of what you put in your body. You will still deal with and learn to control head hunger. You will have to pay very close attention to your intake of Protein, Vitamins and Water. You will potentially go through a period where you mourn the foods that you love. You will have to come to terms with a whole new relationship with food. Obesity is a disease and most people do not understand what that means. It means years and years of weight gain, loss and then gaining more. It means down the road you will likely have comorbitities that can actually take your life early. At the end of the day the only advice I can give you is that you MUST be ready before you move forward. If you go into this with a scared negative attitude, you will struggle with this whole new life required of you. I can tell you from the shirt experience I have had, it is all worth it, absolutely, positively. I was in the place where my comorbitities were actually killing me. Slowly and painfully. Now, I am very very healthy and most important, I feel fantastic. A whole new life. I was ready, and excited and I try to keep a positive attitude even when things are tough. It helps me to live with my decision. My only regret is I did not do this 10 years earlier. I wish the best of luck for you. Just please make sure you are ready before you move forward.

    I'm so sad

I was scheduled for the lapband, I did all the pre-op stuff & my BMI ended up being too low (my psychiatrist took my off a major weight gaining drug & I lost 90lbs in 4.5 months) well, a year later I was on massive amounts of steroids due to another health condition and gained weight again-my endocrinologist highly recommended the sleeve over the lapband.. So I decided to go with that. Yeah get a second opinion.. I yo-yo'd all the time & that can't be healthy (I also take beta blockers-well did for tachycardia) it didn't stop my surgery..
  9. Haha, your post made me laugh. I worked out hard for the first 80 pounds and then I had plastic surgery and the most I could do was walk daily, which in the beginning I was positive was going to result in weight gain. Amusingly enough, over the course of almost 8 months I had three plastic surgeries and a week after the last one I hit my goal weight, which was 37 pounds lost from not exercising much. I think I lost a lot of muscle, but I am always amused when my body throws me a curve ball I never expected. Maybe try walking as your exercise? I find it boring as can be but while I'm in recovery it has helped me maintain at goal and at the very least relaxes me a little.
  10. Does anybody remember a few decades ago the conventional wisdom about fat cells? Once added by weight gain, they never go away? Even with dramatic weight loss, those shriveled up fat cells remain in the body just waiting to pounce on calories and plump themselves up again? That mental image has never left me. It makes me so mad that these skinny shriveled cells are just lying in wait. I think it was actually what the liposuction industry used to convince us that lipo was a way to solve that. Actually remove the skinny shriveled fat cells along with plump fat cells once and for all. Not saying it's true. Just saying it stuck with me. Kinda like these fat cells.
  11. My own experience tells me that calories and carbs are the biggest contributors to weight gain or loss. I enter everything into My fitness Pal. I keep a scale on the counter to weigh everything that I eat. I have exceeded my goal and to keep from losing any more weight I have to eat about 2300-2500 calories a day. No Pasta, bread, or rice. No candy, cake, ice cream. NO CHEATING. I see postings where people cannot give up this or that. DISASTER. WLS is not a magic bullet to allow you to continue to eat as before. It is a tool to help but you ultimately are the one who has to make the intelligent choices.

    Pregnancy after rouxen y

Yes, thank you for sharing your experience. I'm so sorry you went through all of that. My first two pregnancies I threw up around the clock for 40 weeks and it was miserable. I am concerned about the nutrients for the baby and weight gain. I have an appointment with my bariatric surgeon next week to talk about my specific situation. Were hit able to eat enough before you got pregnant and then it stopped? Or were you not getting enough yet even before getting pregnant?

    January Sleevers ❄️

I don't show if you should or shouldn't have cheat days, but I know I do with regards to what I eat, but I still make sure to not eat too frequently. It works for me, but that could be just me. Also, if I'm going to "cheat" I just try and make sure to work out extra both that day and the next. When I'm doing vigorous cycling I might even need to eat an extra 600 calories just to get me through a five hour ride. But I always lose weight when I do those long rids, even if I end the day over 1500 calories. Today I went on just a 2 hour ride but according to myfitnesspal that's over 1600 calories and I doubt I'll eat over 900 for the day. This is not a diet, it's a way of life. Change those old ways of thinking about dieting that led to yo yo cycles of weight gain. If you want something, earn it, and enjoy it. No guilt required. That's my two cents.

    Weird body shape

Well before kids and weight gain I carried my weight in my butt and hips. But because of diabetes and having babies I gained a lot of belly fat :-/ I knew it wouldn't go back exactly to that body shape, but hoped it would be similar. Your answer gives me hope though :-) Thank you! Awesome :-) Fingers crossed
  15. I'm not sure about the liquids for some reason Iv never been a big drinker of anything so the band just increased what was already a struggle with the whole don't drink and eat thing and wait 30 mins. I didn't revise only because of reflux, It was managed with Prilosec well enough but more so because of just sick of the whole lifestyle that came with the band. Yes I could have loosened or unfilled but only with weight gain. Iv not had even a slight bit of reflux since removing the band but I also had a hiatal hernia repair during the revision. I had many barium swallows over the years since I worked in the surgeons office, a few dilated pouches that I would refill for about a month to correct but they never fully corrected. My esophagus is still dilated even in my recent X-rays.
  16. Oh I bet it has been a "battle " and omg I totally gave in to cravings lol and then some... I'm trying to make mostly healthier choices but not always successful.. How about you? I used to be a thin person 10yrs ago, I wish I could claim pregnancy but being a guy that's not possible lol... My weight gain stems from stress and depression ???? I'm on the mend now so willing to change ????
  17. Being bipolar is a medical illness that as you know has no cure, only treatment. People who are not bipolar or who have never loved someone who is bipolar really cannot understand the unique challenges of undertaking WLS of any kind with this illness. Talk to your treatment team, psychologist and psychiatrist. If you are relatively stable WLS may be a possibility. You will definitely need to be very closely monitored as you lose so that medication adjustment can be made and your moods can be watched. I understand the problems with bipolar medications and weight gain. It's so frustrating! One doctor said to me that you gain 10 lbs just taking the script to the pharmacy to be filled! A psychopharmacologist told me that this is because it takes the lid of hunger and you just can never feel satisfied. This is one area that WLS surgery can help since physically you can feel full on much less. Youalready have a DH who can be supportive. That's so important. I'm sending big hugs your way and wishing the very best! It sounds like you have so much happiness already in your life. Hopefully you can put this one last piece in place!
  18. This may or may not be a stupid question but during my 6mth pre op diet can my weight fluctuate? I weighed 272 at my initial visit I'm 5'8" that puts my BMI at 41.3 today was my 2nd mth visit I've gained 11lbs! They have me so stressed about not going under a 40 BMI that I'm gaining weight like crazy. So Dr is saying just don't go under the 40 BMI which will put my weight right at 263, so it's ok to go up and down right? But I should weigh less than my initial visit?

    Different Options

I felt just like you when I started. I also wanted a sleeve. My thought was that I wouldn't be rearranging my guts and I would have less issues with not getting enough nutrients. It seemed better in my mind. My dr also suggested RNY. He said their data showed more weight loss with RNY (though the sleeve was close behind) and they had seen less weight gain with RNY 2-5 years post op. After doing a lot of research of my own and still not coming to a clear decision I went ahead with the dr's recommendation. I'm only 10 days post op so I don't really have any advice but I hope you find what you need to make your decision.
  20. I am 2 years post op RNY and have gained 30 lbs over the course of this past year? My surgeons office is not helping, cant ever get hold of the nutritionist and she never calls me back. Getting so frustrated. All they did at my last check up was write me a prescription for PGX Daily to take 2 packets before my meals, told me to stop any and all snacks (not even healthy snacks are aloud). I was not a big snacker anyway, may have had a bananna or a portion of cheese to hold over from lunch to dinner. I will admit that the winter was particular harsh and could not get out much to do all the walking/jogging I was doing (no excuse for not exercising as I should). I cant get the weight to go down. I dont know how much protein I should be consuming, how many calories I should be, or anything. Need help! I was told by my surgeons office that they want me to go back to seeing them every 6 months and if I can not lose the 30 lbs they want to discuss revision surgery making my pouch smaller. I also think that the major weight gain was due to my huge increase in wine for about 6 months. I have stopped drinking wine all together yet still no results?

How was your 5:2 day today?

So I ended up not having the sardines or salad, instead I had about 2 ounces of curried chicken salad around 2pm, then a serving of cashews and a serving of jack cheese for dinner. I was preoccupied with a new painting I'm working on so before I knew it it was 8:30pm and too late to make a real meal. Today will be same tea and milk, same protein shake, same curried chicken, and definitely the salad tonight - I won't let myself start painting until I've made the salad! I switched mood meds, per my Drs advice, from Zoloft to velafaxine and upon doing so I discovered that one of the side effects of Zoloft is weight gain! WTF!!! I never knew that!!! I'm not going to blame all of my gain in the Zoloft but hell, that couldn't have helped!!

    Ready to give up

I'm not a lap-band patient, so I know little about your situation. Have you been in touch with your NUT to see about caloric intake and scheduled "fills"? Did you check with the pharmacist or online to see if your pain killer can cause weight gain? Don't throw in the towel yet. It's a setback and I'm sure you are frustrated, but you can do this! Best, Amy
  23. Water weight gain, hormonal changes. Really what is 5 lbs when you've come so far? Now if your talking 20 or 30 then that's another issue. I really don't think that weighing yourself every day is good for your psyche anyway(imho)
  24. Stay hydrated for sure. As for the bm, try Smooth Move tea. It has Senna in it which is a laxative. I took it 3 days post op just to nib things in the bud. Don't stress the weight gain, I gained 3 lbs and all of sudden it was gone. Good luck!
  25. I had my surgery last June. I'm at my goal weight and I've lost 85 pounds. My weight has been stable for 4 months. Starting in June my doc says it's safe to try and get pregnant. I'm sure I can take enough vitamins to keep the baby and myself nourished. How did your weight gain go? And of course I'm curious how the weight loss will go after I have the baby. Any stories or advice?
