I add ground organic flax seed to my yogurt daily. adds fiber and keeps you fuller longer. It adds a nutty flavor. I also have noticed if I have a tsp or TBS of peanut butter, it adds fiber to my meal along with protein, but I can almost guarantee the next day I will have a BM.

Are you on the pureed stage yet? I am getting in most of my protein through non shakes. Starkist Tuna creations, Wonderslim shakes/pudding meal replacements, cheese sticks, cottage cheese, yogurt with ground flax (helps with fiber / constipation) - I noticed I was fuller longer with shakes but I couldn't meet my protein. Since I've switched and reduced shakes - I feel better and may eat more often but my body is definitely adjusting and liking this version better.

Help!! Don’t know what to eat!

At 9 weeks, I was eating regular food with the exception of raw veggies. I usually started my day with a protein shake so that I got a big protein boost at the beginning of the day, but eventually switched to greek yogurt. Even now I don't eat a lot of raw veggies because they fill me up and I don't have room for the protein. If you're afraid of getting stuck, try soft foods for a while until you get the hang of it. Soft scrambled eggs? Beans? Lentils? Chicken (dark meat is moister, but I didn't have trouble with white meat). I think I even had steak, cooked medium and chewed well. The key to not getting that "stuck" feeling is chewing very well and not eating foods that will expand in your stomach (pasta, rice, bread). *If you know you're not getting enough protein, I suggest continuing with protein supplements until you get the hang of how to eat with your new stomach.
  4. Hello! So I am almost 9 weeks out from the sleeve and I am having trouble eating. I’m at the regular diet stage but everything I try to eat I either don’t like it or I am terrified of it getting “stuck” and possibly vomiting(which I’ve been able to avoid thus far). I think my fear of getting sick is getting in the way of me eating and I’m definitely not getting the amount of protein in which I should. I’m pretty much just eating yogurt and cheddar cheese sticks and some soup occasionally. I want things but I just don’t want to get sick! Can you guys please help with suggestions on things I can eat?? I spoke with my NUT but it’s very generic, tuna, fish, ground meat, etc. I don’t like tuna or fish, and ground meat has become icky to me. I hate to complain and I’m super happy with my decision I’m just so stuck with what to eat because I know I’m not having enough. Please help! Thank you!

    Minnesota?

Hi Kate! I am Megan from St. Paul. I had RNY in July and am also struggling with protein. The shakes are so terrible (in my opinion). This weekend I am going to try blending up some of the tasteless protein powder with honey flavored greek yogurt, milk and berries. I hope it tastes ok! I am also going to look for other ideas for protein shakes/smoothies I can make at home that are tolerable. Let me know if you have any ideas for recipes. Take care, Megan

    August bypassers/sleevers

HI group, Im now 3 weeks post op. Feeling pretty good...but trying to understand all these new "feelings" in my belly lol. The constipation has been a problem and I have not yet found a solution. I have taken milk of magnesia a couple times when it was really bad and that worked but I cant take that every day. I have been taking a stool softner in pill form everyday and its not doing anything. I may try the stuff you stir in water. Can anyone recommend something that doesnt have strong flavor or taste gritty? My doctors office told my all my liquids count toward "water" so my cup of tea in the morning counts and my breakfast protein shake counts. I make the protein shake with a scoop of chocolate protein isolate, 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk and 8oz of cold coffee. So that alone gives me 16oz of liquid and 31g of protein. The rest of the day is water and protein. I like the ricotta bake, egg salad, baked talapia, kidney beans, greek yogurt and my evening "treat" is a no sugar added fudgcicle (yum). I am band to rny revision and the weight is coming off very slow. I'm okay with that I guess I've lost 9.8 pounds in the last 3 weeks. Hope everyone is doing great! Lisa

    October sleeve

Hi all! Surgery date is on October 8th and I am so excited and nervous at the same time. What are some of the things you all are doing for your liquid diet? I am considering Pure Protein or Premier Protein powders for my shakes. My surgeon recommended 4 shakes/day in between I can have plain Greek yogurt, sugar free popsicle and pudding (meh). If one shake is 25-30g protein wouldn’t that be too much protein for 1 day? Will have to call my nutritionist. Anyway I’m glad to be a part of the October sleevers!
  8. @DixieD oh geez! I didn't even pay attention to your type of surgery, that's one i don't know enough about. I had the sleeve, pretty basic, right? But I feel hungry all the time, someone suggested tums (maybe it was that chick up there lol!) those sort of help. I don't do shakes and I try to stay away from bars like fluffy said. I eat basic too and I'm not afraid of fat, I don't follow keto or Paleo but do my own thing. I eat a lot of yogurt, cheeses, nuts and I'll indulge and have REAL bacon with my one egg. I know you have absorption issues with your surgery but my nut said and I've seen some articles that say over 100 grams of protein is pointless because we pee it all out, the extra i mean. I don't know, I feel the being hungry thing, and I am not supposed to be hungry according to what everything said about the sleeve. I just drink water, or Crystal light or decaf tea and I have struggles with fluid off and on too. It seriously feels like it's a job to.drink water, I loved it before, now it's a chore. My doctor also upped my PPI dose too. I'm going to.educate myself on your surgery though because i.Don't know enough about it and I feel like i.should know what my WLS brothers and sisters go through

    2nd Week post op

During liquid I ate: Yogurt, blended soups, jello, sugar-free popsicles, Fairlife milk (has WAY more protein than regular milk and no lactose), chicken broth, sugar-free pudding It's rough - but it's really a pretty short amount of time. I just graduated to Pureed diet and that transition is going slowly. My new tummy doesn't like some of the foods. I didn't digest pureed ground turkey well...at all. It is definitely a lot of trial and error! Best of luck to you!
  10. Had this same issue two days ago. I tried pureed ground turkey with refried beans and ended up getting sick for the first time since my surgery. It was pretty awful. I am sticking with cottage cheese, unsweetened applesauce, yogurt, and some soups for a bit. Jello and sugar free popsicles are a nice treat too! I may need to become a vegetarian. lol I have to make myself eat - food still kinda grosses me out for the moment. I don't suffer from acid reflux, but my doctor prescribes a medicine to take for 3 months for acid for all patients. Switching from liquid to pureed food takes time, I think. I am just thankful I tried pureed foods before coming back to work today! That would have been awful!
  11. Hey! We have the same surgery date. I just experienced last week a "stall" where I lost 1 lb. I was mortified. The stall ended though on day 7. I'm consuming about the same amount as calories as you and I too work out 1hr at least a day. I also add in 10000 steps a day so I'm moving during the day alot. The only difference I see is that I consume over 70G of protein a day up to 80g. I eat fish alot, it's high in protein and low in fat. For Breakfast I stick with Egg whites which is high protein too. I will also add a scoop of plain protein to my yogurt snacks to bump it up. When I don't have at least 70g of protein I am STARVING. My nutritionist told me it's because I'm working out hard and more active than most. So if you like fish, it's a great protein option. I am down 46lbs since surgery ....and I started heavier than you so honestly I think you are right on par with where you should be weight wise. Try the protein increase and see if the hunger goes away (it should).

    Emotional first ‘stall’

@sassysleever76, I'm so sorry for your loss and understand where you are coming from. I lost my fiancé (he was 2 weeks shy of turning 38) 13 years ago and for some reason the 9th anniversary of his death was one of the hardest for me. Try to turn your attention to something positive. You're on a new journey and think about how happy your husband will be for you to know that you are taking care of yourself and making positive choices. When you start to feel blue, go for a walk, go to the gym and work out the sadness and change those sad hormones to positive and happy endorphins. As for the constipation, my suggestion is a little Milk of Magnesia daily or find a way to increase your fiber, I've become a fan of ground flaxseed and yogurt daily. You've realized your error, now is the time to take control of your actions and put a stop. You haven't done any damage to yourself, you have this and you will succeed. Remember, stalls do happen and sometimes they last, but don't focus on that, focus on the positive changes you have made to yourself and your new lifestyle.

  14. Yesterday was a tough day. I had a lymphedema flare in my arm and it's very painful when that happens. On top of that I was so busy, and had to try to work with one arm elevated on pillows and only using one hand on the computer. Oy! Try being a one-handed graphic designer. So. Slow. It was a great IF day. I tried having just a quick cottage cheese/fruit breakfast with some fiber cereal. We were out of Grk yogurt. And I tried pineapple (fresh). Big mistake. I was starvin marvin until the afternoon. But then started feeling so bad that I lost every speck of appetite. So ended up only having protein coffee for dinner and didn't get all my protein in for the day. Oh well. One day isn't the end of the world. I didn't take pics of my egg puff. You guys know what that looks like! B1-Coffee + Miralax + Colace B2-Cottage Cheese with Bing Cherries and Pineapple L-Egg Puff (ew, turk saus crumbles, mushrooms, spinach, onion mix, lt cheese wedge) AS-BH Turkey + Asian Salad Mix (just the greens part--no dressing or toppings) + WF Italian Dressing D-protein coffee Here's my food log for the day - 500 cal DD (under on cals and protein)-Click to enlarge.

    Eating & Drinking Schedule?

I've tried doing the meal prep stuff and I've found my way around it successfully Meal #1: any flavor Oikos triple zero yogurt (Salted caramel is amazing) = $1.09 Meal #2: 1/2 cup cottage cheese = $0.50 Meal #3: 1/2 cup oatmeal with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter powder (buy from nuts.com) $0.50 Meal #4: Starkist tuna meal pack = $1.89 Meal #5: !/2 Premier protein shake (DOESN'T TASTE LIKE THE DREADED PROTEIN lol) It has 30 grams of protein 1 gram of sugar and is a delicious milkshake = $2.30 (full shake cost) Sam's Club has the BEST price I don't have a membership as I'm single and eating like a bird. Meal #6: finish off remaining premier protein shake (these shakes are perfect during work hours) Meal #7: 2 low fat cheese sticks and small apple = $1.25 Total daily cost: $7.53 - $8.00 daily be sure to add fiber to 2 water breaks during the day to combat the constipation from the protein!
  16. Thank y’all for commenting. I’m still experiencing blockage , I vomited again. I had a bit of chicken and carrots and it got stuck again. I think I need to pay a visit to the hospital. Yogurt and fruits goes in good. Even cheese.
  17. Thank you!! I think i'm going to start weighing my self saturdays and eat tuna during the week and salmon .. yogurt for breakfast with really light snacks in between and going to start 60 minute cardio .. with some boxing and insanity to see if things change! In a week.

    Is it possible

Try to calm down. There are other options to get support and help available. Don't worry about weight loss at this point. Many doctors tell their patients not to weigh the first month because it can be so disheartening. You can't separate out weight loss from fluid retention and swelling at this point. Work on getting your fluids and protein, the rest will happen when it wants to. Stressing yourself out won't make it happen any faster. You should feel no restriction on fluids; they go right through your sleeve. You won't really feel restriction until you get to soft foods. Believe me, you'll know. You won't overdo it on liquids unless they have calories. The 64 oz. is a minimum. If you are comfortable drinking more fluids than that, no problem. Generally, I would say follow your doctor's plan for foods, but if they haven't given you any guidance - purees are any foods that have the texture of applesauce or smoother. At the puree stage, you can have purees or anything from an earlier stage, like full liquids. So you should be having a combination of smooth soups (can add unflavored protein powder), Greek yogurts, soft scrambled eggs, soft refried beans, etc. or, anything that you can put in a blender. (Personally, I couldn't handle the texture of blended meats, but to each, their own.) This website has a recipe section for each stage of diet progression. You can also check out "puree stage foods" on Pinterest. That should give you some ideas, too. Good luck and I hope this helps!

Need breakfast ideas - what are you eating for bf?

My go to during the week is a Siggi's skyr (like Greek yogurt, but less sweet) with granola, tbsp of unjury, and tsp of chia seeds. On weekends I change it up to keep me from getting bored Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Over eating

Seems carb heavy. Fruit or raisins for a snack would just make me want more carbs. Crackers and cheese for lunch, well there are just better options. Stick to the basics. Proteins like chicken, fish, lean meat. Eat it on some salad if you like. Carrot stuffing, potatoes, etc.....carb, carb, carb. It is just my opinion but I’d back down the carbs while you are still so soon out from surgery. You don’t need potatoes, or stuffing. You need protein, and non starchy veggies, maybe a few berries if room. Why not some Greek yogurt for a snack?

    September bypass buddies??

Thank you everyone for the prayers. My bypass went very well and Dr. Taylor also fixed the hernia that I didn't know I had. I also have 6 incision sites that are in a circle. The left ones are the ones that give me constant pain if I move to suddenly or twist. Of course my body decided to start my period the day before surgery which was a major pain, especially when I received blood thinner shots in my belly. The staff took it all in stride and were wonderful. I am home and only taking liquid Tylenol for the pain. I was on morphine through the iv and then on liquid Vicodin which helped for the car ride home. I am getting in my water and most of my protein (shakes, oikos Greek yogurt, sugar free jello, broth). One of the things I noticed immediately in the hospital was everything was too sweet, even the sugar free popsicles. I had lots of broth and forced myself to have some of the jello but I mostly had lots of ice chips. I am finally able to sleep on my sides. I also use a wedge pillow in bed to help prop me up. This was wonderful to be able to sleep 4 hours without being interrupted! Walking does help immensely! I took my house shoes which are actually a pair of Crocs and I was able to walk farther because of the extra cushion from the Crocs. This helped a lot since the gas kept settling in my right shoulder and chest. TMI - The only thing I am concerned about is having my first bowel movement. I have been burping and passing gas but just haven't had to go #2. That kind of makes sense since I haven't really eaten anything that wasn't a liquid so how can you poop if you are peeing everything out? I also had a moment of questioning about surgery. I thought how could I be so selfish to have this elective surgery and inconvenience my family. Thankfully I reminded myself that this was for me and eventually my family will reap the benefits. My hubby was wonderful throughout the whole process. He was so worried that he left his slippers on when we drove to the hospital on Wednesday morning. I am truly blessed to have him in my life. Through 6 years of marriage he has stood by me and encouraged me. He combats that inner destructive voice in my head and makes me laugh. Feel free to ask me any questions about my experience with bypass.

    Over eating

I am generally staying under 1200, But i am suprised to see how fast calories can mount up even eating tiny meals! I have been using the baritastic ap and frequently see calories go up to 1,400-1,800 I'm never 100% sure if I've added the right amount as a lot of foods are either not on the list or brands i haven't heard of or my grams to oz conversation isn't very accurate, I always err on the higher side to compemsate for errors and also i sometimes don't eat all of the amount I've calculated. I went out for dinner the other night and had a macaroni cheese starter as my main course and immediately 750cals on my plate, I AM losing weight slowly so it is coming off but just wondering how everyone copes with meals? can people take a look at my average diet please... 8am Breakfast: 1 x toast OR 1 egg cheese & mushroom omelette OR Pancake made with slimfast 8:30am Coffee with semi skimmed milk 11am Snack: 1 piece of fruit OR kids raisins box 12:30 Lunch: half a small chicken breast & salad OR 2 babybel cheese and 2 crackerbread 3:30pm Coffee (ss milk) 6:30pm Dinner: small chicken breast with vegetables or salad OR slice of Gammon with 1 small potato and broccoli OR chilli con carne or bolognaise in a ramekin size tapas dish 7-8pm Possible (not everyday) a snack of handfull of nuts or handful of berries or a low fat yogurt I don't have many or any bread/pasta/rice type carbs after breakfast apart from the occasional crackerbread at lunch or maybe a potato with dinner maybe once a week. I eat off a side plate or a bariatric portion control plate. Take a look at my food and give me your opinion please, I think im eating too much but im hungry so it's hard to cancel a snack time, but maybe i could swap something out??

    Food Before and After Photos

I'm three days post-op and was started on phase 2, pureed foods yesterday. Here are the two-tablespoonsful cups of food they have sent me for meals and how much I have eaten. It ranges from chicken and cream of asparagus soup to turkey and cream of mushroom, and any combination of the two. The single cup is Lite n Fit Greek yogurt, vanilla flavor. I also get a chocolate protein shake with breakfast and I'm using the empty 30ml cup to drink my portion of the shake. So far, so good...
  24. Sick. Thanks NYC... But I did eat so here's photos, same thing for two days. Made soup from the original meal. Worked out. What's missing is yogurt, peanut butter and chocolate. I say at about 1000 cals both days. Endless amounts of fluids to try and cripple this bug. Going back to bed.

Need breakfast ideas - what are you eating for bf?

I, too, just love the Oikos Triple Zero yogurt. I have half a tub of that with a small amount of fruit most breakfasts. Otherwise a scrambled egg, sometimes with a touch of shredded parmesan cheese. I have also had slices of apple with natural peanut butter. I would love to branch out with new breakfast ideas too. I've never loved oatmeal, but maybe it's time to try it again.
