Port pain 4 1/2 months after surgery
Tara201 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all... I've been searching around internet for info and figured why not just put this out there for some feedback Had surgery aug 30...all going fairly well Every so often if I move in my sleep a funny way or twist a funny way or do something strenuous I get pain in my port. Sometimes I turn over in the night and feel this twisting like someone yanked my port... Anyway had that 2 nights ago and maybe a little last night. Today I have pain if I bend over...it's not red or anything like that. It's not a burning pain. I took tylenol and put an icepack on it. Any ideas? does this happen to anyone else? maybe I slept crazy I woke up with a stiff neck too....I'm also a little gasey (i know tmi). The pain is on my left side right below my rib right near my port. If I lay still it doesn't hurt... Guess just like to hear any thoughts Thanks for reading tara -
I know, I know.... but I just have to ask. I never had this problem until about the last five years and that just so happens to also be the years I have been over weight. I have to use clinical strength deodorant and it sometimes wears off before the day is up. I'm having this surgery to get to be "normal" again and was just curious if this gets better also. Sorry if it's TMI but was wondering just I thought I'd ask.

Anyone else NOT losing any weight on pre-op diet?
wareagle40 replied to DougNichols's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have lost 9 lbs in 9 days. I bought the Protein shakes from the grocery store whey Protein 32 grams of protein 3 grams of carbs and make my own protein shakes. I have protein for breakfast, apple for snack, Atkins bar with 12 grams of protein for lunch, apple for afternnon snack and fish or chicken with green vegatable for dinner. 3 oz of meat and cup of vegatable. Basically I can eat anything that is on adkins as long as not fatty because it's supposed to be a liver shrinking diet. If hunger in the evening I will eat another bar. or a Protein Drink mixed with Water instead of skim milk. Oh yeah my morning one is mixed with skim milk. I feel great and the weight is falling off. Also, this may be TMI but my bowel movevements only happen every few days but I know on those days I am going to lose weight if you know I mean. I have alwasy suffered from irritable bowel but not on this diet. Hope that helps. Tara -
Hi! So I was banded on 1/5 - I have the Realize band, but truthfully I think that they all work the same way, right? So anyway - let me just preface by apologizing in advance as some of this may be TMI, but here goes. I have been having a huge issue with constipation up until TH when it seemed that overnight my BM changed - they were much softer. On Friday (like 2am) it hit me like a ton of bricks. Everything seems to be going straight through me. Yesterday I was having trouble drinlking Water because everything just tasted off. I did managed to make two Protein shakes and consume those, but that is it. Today the runs continue - like water. I don't really feel "sick" today, but I am still having issues. I ate oatmeal with double protein milk this morning to get some substance and again - about 20 minutes later I was back in the bathroom. Has anyone esle experieinced anything like this? I just started soft foods on TH evening, but I was feeling like this (not to the full extent) TH morning. Any insight or tips are greatly appreciated! Angela

Stomach problems with Preop TMI maybe
~*~Rachel~*~ posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am just wondering if anyone else out there has had stomach issues with the protein shakes. I have had nausea and diarrhea this whole time and today it is worse. I tried a different type of protein from GNC it is still whey. I thought whey was suppose to be the best out there to digest and I am not lactose intolerant never have been so I know it is not that. Now I am not ruling out the fact that I may have a little stomach virus over the past two days when it has been its worse but, I've had problems this whole time. It's actually helped I am not hungry and I've made extra sure not to get dehydrated but its really starting to get annoying. Anyone else go through this? Surgery is tuesday and I really don't want this to interfere -
I have had long problem with constipation and subsequent gas (farting). I've attributed this to the constipation. Finally when I went for my GI consult and my PCP (which I hadn't been for years) They both reccomended miralax. So in the very beginning it worked very well, then started not to work as well, now working a little better, also was eating a fiber one bar a day and that helped some. Before surgery I had been taking ephedra to help boost my heart rate during exercise. I only took one pill when I went to the gym and that was it, otherwise it made me feel really weird and shaky and I could not function. I know ephedra is not really good to take, but as long as you stay hydrated, well whatever. Taking this also helped my constipation. But this last week I have been SOOO flatulant, it is really really bad. Anyone have any idea on how to help with this. Tried gas -x took one a day, maybe I need more.

Yippee!!!!!! Your too funny about the TMI . . . loved it! Keep up the fabulous work!

Well, after ten years with that damnable device cutting into my head, dripping humidifier Water down my nose while I sleep, giving me sinus infections and blowing so much air into my belly that I wake up with an earth-shattering fart each morning (sorry for TMI, but it's true and you CPAP'ers know what I'm talking about), I may finally be free of the contraption! For you non-CPAP'ers wondering what the big deal is, imagine that you can't just "go to sleep" -- instead you have to set up this big, uncomfortable contraption that also tethers you to a wall socket. You get used to it after a while, but it's always in the back of your head that you can never "just sleep" -- you have to have electricity, you have to have your equipment, and you're always fighting with some hose or strap or something that chafes or tangles you up or leaks. I just got back from a sleep study; my sleep doc ordered a "split night" study where the first half of the night would be without a mask, and the second half with the mask to get my new pressure -- if I needed it. Well, I slept the whole night through without my mask, and although I don't have the official results yet, the sleep tech said that it looked like I was sleeping well without the mask. Even on my back (which is the most challenging sleep position for apnea sufferers). I was definitely dreaming at several points during the night. So I'm pretty sure that this means I'm done with it. HUZZAH! That ALONE justifies the VSG surgery. When I go to Hawaii next month, I won't have to lug the CPAP with me, through the TSA checkpoints, find outlets in the hotel room... etc. etc. etc. And I still have 20 or so pounds to lose, so it's only going to improve if I'm "borderline." I'm so excited! I didn't think it would be possible for me to ever get off the CPAP, and yet here I am!

January 2011 Bandsters !!!
MaybeBanding26 replied to Renee1003's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i was banded on the same day as you....but they ended up letting me go home that evening. the incisions dont really hurt for me, unless i poke them or soething. its all about the this gassy bloated feeling. it BLOWS. and *TMI ALERT! TMI ALERT! TMI ALERT!* ive realized that its much less painful to pass gas than it is to belch. i dont know why that is. but lets just say, i am opting for the rear exit as much as possible! whats the law of 30s? im definitely not hydrating enough...im trying though. im on clears til at least friday....i may stay on longer. i have no appetite but currently im having difficulty distinguishing pain from hunger. im sad though...i didnt get weighed on surgery day so i dont know how much i lost during the two-week torture! AND my scale's batteries are dead so i cant even see if ive met my first goal of being not too fat for my scale... -
Good Morning...about ready to hit the shower (should have done it hours ago but lolled around eating bf). Heading up to see FIL today. Taking Tanker as FIL is tolerent of him. He is not a dog person but likes Tanker and we do not want to leave him....even though he handles being here alone just fine. He adjusted to his new digs quickly. I had my first public PB last night at dinner. I never really knew what ppl were talking about when they explain having to quickly find a RR. Eva took us to a steakhouse (best steak I've ever had) and I order a filet. No problems whatsoever eating it. (I always drink when I eat) Had one bit of my steak to go and took a drink and KNEW I'd better run. TMI....the only thing that came up was Water and little bit of lettuce. It must of rearranged things down there cuz after that happened I was perfectly fine. I guess after almost 3 yrs of being banded, I could expect at least one episode like that. Sandy....I bet you are soooooooo excited about Cancun. You've been pretty booked lately and deserve some time to relax. Happy to hear your dad is doing better. OK...I have to hit the shower so we can head out. Excited to see the little man (FIL). Have a great Sunday...I know we will.

Oh man! Wish it was warm here! So envious of your weather right now Apples, Eva, Janet, and Phyl! Its about 7 degrees here and will stay that way all week. It was sunny out today, so there are icicles hanging from the eaves. They are pretty, but sheesh its cold! So, I've been so obsessed with why I'm caving in and eating things that I normally would not when I'm on the train. Well, hello Meredith! It's going to be that time of the month on Monday or Tuesday I crave the sweets at this time! I just cannot obsess about it because every TOM I gain about 3 lbs Water weight and then it disappears! Thank goodness! Ok, sorry, TMI. Looks like everyone is doing well. The shower really was so nice today and it really got me excited for the arrival of the baby. Watching a special about Celiene Dion on OWN. Its pretty good. I'm up very late because I fell asleep after the shower, now I'm wide awake! Of course. Melissa~ I always think that I would like to freeze stuff. Especially chicken. So I do, then I forget about it and 6 months later when I'm cleaning out the fridge, I find it and get so angry because I'm wasting. I would so much rather have fresh. But, in the case of making chicken salads and such, I can see where you would want to put it away. Cheris right, veggies in freezer do not fare well. What did you put into the salad? We are supposed to go to a 50th birthday party tomorrow. This is going to sound bad, but frankly, I'm kinda sick of going to all of these events for people. It makes me sound selfish, but there never ends up being any time for Andrew and myself. He works so much, so the weekends are our only time to have "dates" and we haven't had time to do that lately. I just want a day for us, but there is always something in the "plans". Sorry about my rant. I know many of you can identify. Night~ love to you all!~ Meredith

The good thing about being a slow loser
LilMissDiva Irene replied to coops's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@Feed that's a very interesting idea! Actually I am having some cukes as we speak - so day 1 and done It's worth 0 points so I'm good to go... :-) @DJ, to be honest I think I was grazing way too much first thing. Not on things that are necessarily bad, however I have made some bad choices in here and there. That's no longer now because I'm logging on Weight Watchers and I'm only allowing myself 24 points per day. That equals to anywhere from 900-1200 calories depending what I'm eating. You get dinged heavily for foods that are high fat and high carb. However they go easy on foods that are high protein and high fiber. :-) It's working!! A few other things I've changed is I bought a DVD from Target, the Leslie Sansone Walk away the pounds. She has a fantastic 2 week diet that is so packed with nutrients and very well balanced. Of course I can't eat the portions she suggests, barely by half. Isn't that amazing I can't even eat a "diet" program??!! I love that!! Well I'm on day 3 today... so far so good. The food is so healthy and delicious and I'm not gonna beat around the bush here - I feel totally incredible. My workouts have been outstanding because my energy level is thru the roof right now. I've gotten back to eating more veggies, fruits and whole grains. In looking at percentages I'd say I'm doing about 50% protein, 25% Fats and 25% Carbs. Not bad... One other thing, I've been "going" really regular too since. It's not small amounts (sorry tmi) and it also makes me feel great!! @Chilo - Big Hugs!!! @coops - Hoorayyy!!!! Gosh, being a slow loser sure puts a big spin on every pound doesn't it?? I'm telling you I was jumping for joy when I saw that this morning!!! Congrats and here's to many more!! Cheers!! -
alittle odd question
nomorejellybelly replied to ASHLEYRO21's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have regular bm's for a little while after my surgery and when I did (TMI ALERT), it was usually just tiny bits. -
Cheri~ It wasn't drinking any wine or anything like that when the band was too tight, it was after. I know how it feels when it is too tight now and this was definately that "feeling". After I was so sick with my band too tight and having reflux every night for that month, I never want to feel like that again. It caused that partial slip that I had. It's only when I'm too tight that I get reflux. I have never gotten it from food. I don't consider myself semi-vegetarian, I just sometimes don't like the taste of meat. It depends I guess. Usually my salads will have chicken on them. Yesterday it did. But I don't do much dairy. It makes me have gas. TMI. I do love cheese, but I limit it very strictly. The dr just took out a super small amount, he said almost "unmeasurable". I feel like I make better choices when I am able to eat a wider variety of foods. Eva~ Thanks girl. Its tough, but I know I can't beat myself up over it. I have come to the point where I'm ok with the weight loss slowing down. I'm wanting to have it off by my 2 year bandiversary which is June 26th. I feel like that is realistic. Right? Linda~ Once again, thanks to you too! I needed you girls and your positive feedback. I do make much better choices now. Its amazing compared to what I would have eaten before. Good point! I'm going to take a little nap now. Just got back from the shower not long ago. It was very nice. Open house style. CBL~Meredith

January 2011 Banders
GavynsMum replied to blueshell23's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Rumor: I haven't had trouble drinking either and feel like i am doing something wrong because i am not only sipping 1 oz per 15 minutes but instead drinking a few ounces at a time when i read on here about people not being able to sip an oz at a time. I am going to chop this up to Water not filling the pouch and just slidding through due to less swelling than some. I get to start Full liquids tomorrow which includes ONLY the following : yogurt, milk, Protein shakes, pudding, soupy grits, and strained cream soup (and clear liquids). I have been on Clear Liquids since Sunday (1 day before surgery). My atkins shake never tasted so good and i am looking forward to some grits tomorrow morning. My only complaints are the tightness, hunger pains, gas, and the diarrhea (TMI). No one told me about the last one. I guess it is a given; liquid in...liquid out. I can wait to start mushies on day 15. It was worth it though. Hope everyone is doing well! -
Karen - wonderful to hear how you are enjoying time with Eva and her husband. Would love to see her home. Bet that warm weather also feels wonderful. Sandy - I love Grand Cayman. Have been there many, many times - used to go two or three times a year and spent a month there (rented a house on 7 mile beach). Hurricane Ivan destroyed the island and when it rebuilt, some of the charm was gone forever. I miss the "old" Cayman. Sandy, I also share the experience (and Lori) of being raised by very cold, unemotional, unloving parents. However, since they were NEVER there for me, I don't feel the need to be there financially or in any way, now. We reap what we sow. I sound very mean - and in thinking about it, I spent 30 days in Psychiatric/gereatric unit with my Mom when she was suffering - so I guess I'm not as tuff as I think. My step-father (who was in my life since I was 6) is 87 and needs assistance. I'm NOT there for him. TMI - but it helps to know many of us can be survivors and change the future for our children and show them love. Please take care of yourself. I know there is a solution and your sister and husband - and maybe a social worker at PT - can help find it.

Questions about Clears
MommyTawnie replied to Kris's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was in your same shoes a couple of weeks ago. I was really shaky, and started having bathroom problem "tmi sorry" I called the doctors office and they told me it was normal. Our bodies are going through big changes and the shakiness is from not getting in the same sugar contents we were prior to surgery. Your body will adjust eventually, but until it does try getting in 2-3 more grams of sugar to help adjust your own blood sugar "I never take in more then 6-7 grams of sugar at a time" if that's what you may think it is.. Also you have to try to get in your liquids your body can only go so long before it will dehydrate, and you don't want that this early out. Heck you don't want that at anytime in the recovery process.. What I did was took a sports bottle "32 ozs" and filled it with ice water. I would sip sip sip on that all day until I had finished it. I would fill it up again and usually finish half of it the 2nd time around. But I was getting in other liquids through out the day so I wasn't to worried about finishing the whole 2nd bottle.. The more time passes the easier it will be for you to take in more and more liquids. Just remember no liquids 30 minutes before or after eating anything "I conisidered broth a meal" -

Caught up again. Whew! Such prolific writers. Feel like my cold is letting up. It never got bad. Just felt weighed down and draggy and medicine made me loggy. Maltitol and other sugar alcohols can cause gas. Wish more high Protein low carb products used splenda. Hadn't had an Atkins shake for a few days. Had one this afternoon and had terrible gas a few hours later. Sometimes it hits me, sometimes it doesn't. TMI LOL. Watching It's Complicated. Love Merrill Streep. Gonna get to it now. Cheri -

Congrats! Yours is truly a success story! Funny you should mention the metallic taste in my mouth, I've had this too (6.5 weeks post-op), I thought it was just me. Have a nasty coat on my tongue that I scrape off everyday (TMI!). Good luck and God bless. P.S. You are so cute, your hubby is a lucky man. -
Why do women have anal sex?
djmixon replied to Oregondaisy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
When I was much younger my first husband insisted (and he was very persuasive) and was rough. I had to have reconstructive surgery years later. Then a few years ago, I would allow my current husband to do this and found that with the right partner, tons of lube, and amazing relaxation skills, it is possible to have mind-blowing orgasms this way. He could reach places this way that were imposible to reach vaginally without a curved realistic dildo / vibrator... or an impossibly long male organ (such as my first husband's). Unfortunately, with a male organ that size you might find breathing difficult during sex and when I was pregnant with my two children with him, my cervix was pushed wayyy interior. My OB/Gyn's had lots of comments while they were buried elbow deep trying to feel my cervix. Your experience will vary. If you choose to try this use LOTS of WATER-BASED LUBE. AVOID PETROLEUM JELLY or other petroleum products. Also, know that the rectum and intestine are very fragile and tear easily... which could cause you to bleed out very quickly. So, GO SLOW and if it hurts and isn't eased by relaxing even more, then STOP. If you bleed afterwards, more than just a little, SEEK MEDICAL HELP. Don't put anything up your bum that is larger than a regular sized penis... and even then maybe you shouldn't. Your experience WILL vary from anyone else's... Enough of the TMI regarding this from me. And why is there a man in the powder Room?????? -

Hope everyone has a great day -
I have no problem at all with the water. In fact I am taking in 4-16.9oz bottles of water through out the day. It's the protein shakes I am having problems with. I think I finally found one I like "taste sooo yummy, almost like chocolate milk" so I am fixing to buy a case and really start pushing myself to get it in. 1 can has 35ozs so you add that to the meats I consume I will be getting in a pretty good amount of protein after this. You really have to push yourself with the amount of water you consume. I thought I was getting a uti or worse kidney stones because my urine turned brown "tmi sorry" I talked to the doctor and the meds he has me on can cause the brown urine. I was just fine, it still scared me into drinking more and more water. LoL

January 2011 Banders

Hey there, I was just banded on Jan 3rd in Richmond, Va at MCV with Dr. Kellum.... {Dr. Kellum and his entire staff were phenomenomal!!!} Everything went great, went home the next day...a little sore, but managable until Friday afternoon (Jan 7)...holy smokes, I thought that I had reached a new level of constipation (I know I know TMI), but I was doubled over with pain until I couldn't take it anymore, went to the ER....had an exam....(embarrasing) and after it was all said and done GAS!!! I've never beeen in so much agony with gas.....Doc gave me some over the counter product, I sipped on it for about 40 minutes...and I now I am all good. It has been a week.....today. I have a hard time eating/rather drinking....just don't have an appetite.....I am drinking these horrid Protein shakes, I actually became over the Protein shake during the 2 week pre op liquid diet. I started at 291 and was 278 when I got banded. Now, I'm 273. I feel good.....I actually don't feel as though I have a band at all.... I had a perception that directly after surgery that I was going to have some issues with drinking....I suppose that is going to come after my first band fill...I'm doing the sipping, but have no trouble just drinking....is that normal....oh well...this is my first time...I'm stoked about my journey and look forward to meeting others that are on a similar path!!! -

Yay for going the fiber route! Miralax is gentle as laxatives go, but it's still a laxative. I was an on-again-off-again laxative abusing bulimic, and fortunately have no lasting ill effects. My younger sister regularly abused laxatives for years and her system has never recovered. Now she HAS to use Miralax and also has been put on IBS meds. So yeah, I'm all about fiber vs. laxatives these days. I've been using Benefiber (or the generic knockoff) for over a year now. I had to work my way up to the full daily amount, as it does make you produce more gas at first. I'd say it took a couple of months to get my body fully adjusted. But even though my diet contains a lot of Protein, the fiber via the Benefiber and regular dietary fiber (mostly in legumes) has kept me as regular as clockwork. (LOL TMI) I put a heaping tablespoon in my hot tea once each day. It's nearly flavorless, and has no texture at all. Love it!
