  1. Do you have any pain in your left shoulder/ neck area? I ask because 10 days after my surgery I was feeling the way you describe, along with pain in my shoulder. It turned out I had a leak in my sleeve and I've had a heck of a road since then. I previously had a lap band also, although mine was removed in 2015.   3. Hey everyone, I’m kinda starting to freak out. I had my surgery on 2/10, 7 weeks ago. I have not lost weight in 4 weeks. I’m down about 25 pounds since surgery but the scale isn’t budging really. I’ll go up a pound and down a pound but outside of that, nothing. 4 weeks to me is a long time for such a stall this early. I’m tracking everything I eat. Everything. Staying under 1000 calories. Could be better with protein and water, but making good food choices. I work out every day via cardio. I have lost inches but that’s kinda stalled too. I’m worried this isn’t going to work for me. Like what the heck. I’m working so hard. I don’t get it. Help! Thanks, Jackie

    Lie on food log

    I am in maintenance and I do have a sweet treat occasionally. As long as I get right back on plan, I haven't found it to be a problem. Like you, it's not realistic to think I will NEVER again have a sugar-sweetened dessert. That being said, I was more strict during my pre-op diet. At that time I didn't eat off plan (although I did break down and eat yogurt when I was supposed to be on liquids only for 10 days). It's not the end of the world, but try to stick to the pre-op diet as good pre-op dietary adherence has been found to correlate with good weight loss outcomes. Don't beat yourself up, just try to start over.

    Any surgery regrets?

    My sister has always been overweight...I have been overweight for the last 15 years (or so). She is on a diet (Dr. Livinggood) and told me that she had told a friend NOT to get the surgery because it would change her relationship with food FOREVER. I told her "That's kind of the point...even with the program YOU are on". But I will say this, I do not regret it at all! (I DO however, regret the Reeses' Peanut Butter Egg that I just ate...but only to the extent I would have regretted it BEFORE surgery! LOL) I echo those that said wait until you are sure...but I wish I had thought about doing this 10 years ago!

    Any surgery regrets?

    "Almost everyone." I might even just go with "many". I had open RNY so I was cut from stem to stern, had a drain for 10 days after. I was in the hospital for 3 days with a bed that was the devil. I sat in the guest chair most of the time. Because of the staples and drain every movement was a new experience in pain. Eating was nearly impossible. I never regretted my choice for an instant.

    Oh my gosh!!!!! This is the BEST thing I ever did? My one regret: (and I have heard this SO many times...). I wish I would have done it sooner! I was 57 when I had the sleeve done 10 years ago. I lost 80 lbs and just in the last couple of years I have put 15-20 lbs back on which is why I am back here to figure out how to stop the gain. I went in with the mindset that this was a very exciting time in my life and I was finally going to get a handle on it and I did!!! I wrote a book called Queen of Crop where I kept a blog faithfully each week....I suggest you do as well because it will be a very exciting year for you. You will be in the Honeymoon phase for the first year....but listen and learn so you don't regain. Sadly, my surgery was very early on and I was traveling for a year so had very little (if any) follow up support so here I am fighting some weight gain. But oh, the freedom of feeling thin!!!! Good luck and have fun with it. My passport photos taken exactly one year apart!

    April surgeries

    deena10 I'm on day four of the liquid diet. Mine is very strict, too. Down 4.6 lbs so far; my doc wants a 10 lb loss by the surgery date. I'll see her on Monday for final visit before the big day the following week.

    Weight Loss Medication for Regain?

    Yes, it is by prescription only in the US. But you may want to check in Europe. I know that a few prescription drugs in the US are over the counter in Canada. It may be worth asking a pharmacist. Good luck on your journey...…..but I don't consider155 heavy by any means. I got down to 154 after my sleeve surgery and felt pretty great there. You've accomplished so much, you are an inspiration 10 years after surgery!

    Any March Surgeries?

    I know I didn’t lose a lot pre-op. Just 2-3 lbs. and post op I gained for the first few days due to fluids and swelling. Now I’m exactly 7 days post surgery and down almost 10 lbs. so I think it catches up eventually. I hope you are starting to feel and see a difference. Btw-Had cottage cheese yesterday - 1 day before my purée phase starts but I couldn’t wait to eat some other than liquid. Pre-op I hated cottage cheese but yesterday it was the best thing I’ve ever tasted!😋 not sure if it’s my taste buds changing as others have noted or if I was just desperate for a change. Hoping I’ll feel the same about salads😉

    Weight Loss Medication for Regain?

    Well what a nice surprise! Thank you so much for your nice compliments. I had fun writing the book and it was a magical year of transformation. Not only were we traveling while I was recuperating but then we ended up relocating from Hawaii to Amsterdam where we have lived the last 9 years. It's nice to know people are still reading it! And it looks like we are the same height, and you are on your way as well! Be sure to take lots of photos...it was a very fun first year. I hope you have lots of support and continue the honeymoon period forever! If I decide to write the 10 year after sequel, I will let you know. It might just help me get back on track. I still feel good but must stop the bleeding.

    Any April 2021 bypassers?

    I have also been feeling very overwhelmed lately about the surgery and the reality of what you can and can’t eat afterwards. The dumping syndrome also sounds horrible but I’m guessing it helps to keep you on track....I have to admit Although my procedure isn’t until April 28th I’ve been very lenient on my diet vs following the dietitians 1200 calories a day ..my preop diet begins 10 days prior to my surgery...And it is reassuring to know that i will be able to still eat some normal things in the future but just very small amounts...
  14. I had the lapband a little over 10 years ago. I was almost 400 at my highest. When I started my process I was 386. With the band I lost 170 pounds highest to lowest. I then gained what doctors called happy weight when I met my boyfriend. It was about 10 pounds and that was where I stayed until I had my emergency surgery in October 2019 to remove my band. I lost my job and then covid hit. I regain a lot and now above 300 again. A number I promised myself I would never see. I remember the first day I weighed over 300 in the office at the doctors I just cried. I tried to be kind to myself. I’m scheduled for the sleeve 4-16. Was originally suppose to be 2-19 but was pushed back for different reasons. I’ve read a lot of posts on here that made me wonder if there were many ladies on here above 300. Glad I’m not alone. :)
  15. Hello again to all the WL Veterans....Queen of Crop here...sleeved 10 years ago this October. Lots 88 lbs and have gained back 25. I live in Amsterdam and have no WLS support here (nor did I ever have it). So after keeping my weight off for 5 of the 10 years, started gaining again due to poor choices about 5 lbs a year for the last 5 years. I used to listen to Reeger Cortell's wonderful podcast that she did for years; in fact I was a guest on her show one month. She mentioned weight loss medication; that it might be an option. But I don't know anything about it and not even sure they would offer it here. (There is very little obesity in Holland; at 155 lbs I feel like I am one of the heaviest people in Amsterdam!). Anyway, has anyone had any experience with this and was it successful. I feel like I need some help to get back to basics. Photos taken exactly one year apart after surgery.

    Drinking after surgery

    I’m 3 months out and can almost “chug” again. Chugging is different than it used to be though. I could have easily chugged a 16oz bottle of water in 10 minutes if I were thirsty enough. Now it might take me an hour, but I can take 4-5 big gulps before my stomach goes “hey wait a second, slow down.” After surgery I never really had any difficulty drinking. To start it had to be somewhat warm or room temp, but now it’s much easier to drink the colder the water is.

    Doctors scale vs Home scale

    I totally understand the frustration. Every time I go to the doctor the scale (at minimum) makes me at least 5 pounds higher than my home scale. I went yesterday and it said I weighed 199. I about cried! My doctor has to remind me every time that their scale is 5-10 pounds off because she weighs herself on it every now and then and she's noticed that it does that even though it's supposed to recalibrate itself. She said it's always off by at least 5 pounds and everyone finds that frustrating, even her (she had weight loss surgery herself about 15 years ago. She's been able to keep her weight off even after having more kids after her surgery). It always frustrates me and I immediately weigh myself when I get home just to see how far off their scale was. I was 195 on my home scale with my clothes on so it was off by only 4 pounds (193 sans clothes because it was the afternoon and... it's also that time of the month so water weight is pissing me off. I had to check that too because I was paranoid I'd gained more water weight due to my stupid period).

    I haven’t even had my surgery yet and I’m worried about the what have I done thoughts. I had the lapband over 10 years ago and had it removed in 2019 and I remember having those thoughts with that.
  19. Welcome to the boards! I had bypass surgery on 2/19/21, so I'm about 6 weeks out. Since surgery I no longer like jello (in any flavor), bananas, any type of turkey breakfast sausage, hard boiled eggs or plain water. The taste of any of them make me want to throw up. I am now starting not to like applesauce either. After surgery I looked forward to my spoonful of applesauce to take my acid reflux meds with. It's now tasting very acidic but I'm still using it until my body says no more. I haven't come across anything that I didn't like that I now like.

    whoa. You must have been feeling twilight-zone-y when you reached goal! Are you used to it yet? I have no idea how much I weighed at 10 years old but it was probably less than 60lbs. I wonder what that would like on me now. Probably not very good!
  21. Hi everyone! so I would like to discuss the possible negatives of the surgery and how to fix/avoid. the first 3 weeks are crucial IMO. the healing process can be tricky. I wasn't able to eat at all and I barely drank. I was admitted this past Monday for severe dehydration and they agreed to do an upper endoscopy to check if there is anything blocking. it turns out that the food passage (the new connection) was nearly the size of a pin and they immediately fixed it. now I can eat and drink so much better. they opened it to about 10-12mm. A fellow member here gave me the heads up (thank you). I decided to share because the Doctor told me that it is common and it's an easy fix. I hope whoever is experiencing this finds this post and helps them out. this is such a good surgery and the lifestyle change leads to a healthier life. After 4 weeks I don't have sleep apnea, no plantar fasciitis, and lost 40 lbs.

  23. I went for my first nutrition visit today. I have to do 6 for my insurance to cover my surgery. And I can't gain any weight. Well when I first went in for my evaluation I weighed 238 which I thought was lower, I usually weigh 240. Then I have been dieting and stuff and my scale says 233-236. So I'm thinking I'm good to go then today at the first nutrition visit I weighed 245!!! that's 7 pounds up from last visit and 10-12 pounds more then my scale says. And I have checked my scale and it is accurate with everything and every person who has tried it. Does anyone have any advice or tips, or similar experiences.     Sugar free deserts and heart healthy

    Looks like this may work for a treat too................. Low Carb Protein Cheesecake Prep Time 10 minutes Cook Time 50 minutes Total Time 1 hour Servings 2 Calories 165kcal Ingredients 8.5 oz. low fat cottage cheese 2 egg whites 1 scoop vanilla protein powder 1 tbsp. Stevia 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 serving sugar-free Strawberry Jell-O Water Instructions: Preheat the oven to 325 F (160 C). Prepare the Jell-O according to the instructions on the package and place in freezer. Blend cottage cheese and egg whites until the consistency is smooth. Pour the blended mixture into a bowl and whisk it together with the protein powder, Stevia, and vanilla extract. Transfer the batter into a small nonstick pan and bake for 25 minutes. Turn off the oven, but leave the cake in it while it cools down. Once the oven has cooled, remove the cheesecake. When the Jell-O is almost set (you should just be able to stir it), pour it over the cheesecake. Let the cake set in the fridge for about 10-12 hours minimum before enjoying. Notes This recipe is for 2 servings of cheesecake. Each serving is half of the cake. The cake needs to be refrigerated for at least 10 hours to set, so it should be made the day before you plan to serve it. Make sure to use a protein powder with good vanilla flavor that holds up well in baking. You can change up the flavor of the topping by using different types of Jell-O. The egg whites need to be thoroughly whipped to ensure the cake has some height. For a taller cake, use a smaller pan or double the recipe. This cheesecake can be kept covered in the refrigerator for up to a week.     Thanks, KM. This is the kind of perspective I was looking for. What do you mean by the "weight loss phase"? The liquid phase? So if you spent the last 4 months on 10 pounds, that means that it took you 6 months for the other 50. I'm not sure how this translates to someone heavier, but that's a solid rate. I'm hoping for 250 -> 180, which would be 30%. I don't mind protein shakes on their own, but my issue is that I am used to living a very carnivorous life and am missing the flavors of meat and associated stuff. The faux-sugar flavor is great for feeling like I've had a snack, but I miss chicken thighs and steak. I'm wondering what can fill that desire. Have you done any research into your metabolic rate? Obviously at some points beforehand you were eating above maintenance, but did your BMR go down dramatically?
