considering going vegetarian, need some advice
BLERDgirl replied to pookybear's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
I am vegetarian and deathly allergic to seafood. Highly processed foods tend to trigger my allergies. My Protein comes from Beans, tofu, seitan, dark green veg, grains, nuts, dairy (mostly cheese and yogurt) & eggs. I don't drink/like cow's milk, but I do eat greek yogurt. I prefer FAGE 0%. I also supplement with whey Protein powder. It takes being creative, but I have no problem keeping my protein between 85 - 100 gms. My carbs are often high, but as long as they aren't coming from "white" or heavily refined sources I don't worry about them. I am also allergic to artificial sugars and stevia. I don't often add sugar to my foods. I do eat fruit several times a week. When I do add sugar use either real sugar or raw honey. At 10mths I keep my calories between 800 - 1000 a day and work out 5 - 6 days a week. @@pookybear - You could try having Meatless Monday's with your boyfriend. Look for meaty textures like portabello mushroom and filling grains like quinoa and farro. -
Before becoming a vegetarian I ate raw beef, eggs and fish.

The STRICT ones in first year......
Livincrimson replied to Lexuskela's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There is a site called bariatricfoodie.com or also there's a free bariatric cookbook from Georgetown... You can just search it and it should come up. I use a lot of vegetarian recipes and then add in tofu or veggie crumble. I'm a big van of spaghetti squash... And I also I do each some legumes... Occasionally chick peas or whatnot. -
Not feeling sure about going through with WLS...
BLERDgirl replied to nolongerhere's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's okay to like yourself and want to be better. I didn't have high blood pressure or diabetes. I always thought I was cute. I agree with @@Babbs this is a lifestyle change. Make sure you are ready to commit. Okay so I'm home now. Let me just say I don't eat low cal food ever. However, like @islandsneezer I am a vegetarian with multiple food and medicine allergies. Mine are: Foods: seafood, stevia, most artificial sweeteners, MSG, food dyes, especially red dye. Medicine: toviaz, percocit, gabapantin, iodine, and latex. I always had an active life style. Plenty of friends, traveled the world, and I love fashion. I have a bunch of minor, but chronic health issues. Now all of these issues individually or in a smaller sized body are completely manageable and tolerable. However the weight made them worse. To the point that I was unable to work. I was told that WLS might make them more manageable. Guess what? I've had 1 very minor episode of swollen lips since my surgery. I no longer get up all night peeing. Back to low cal, restricted diet. I don't do that. One of the things I had to when trying to manage my allergies was keep a food diary. I started eating "clean" Basically no processed foods. I cook most things from scratch. Other than the Protein shakes I still do that. So I never went on a diet. I just started being more mindful of what I ate. I gave up sodas and only drink Water and occasionally fruit juices. As I mentioned before the excess issue is an issue I'll deal with when/if it happens. A good friend of mine had bypass surgery. She lost 60% of her body weight and has no excess skin. All I know is I was 51 and I plan to live another 40/50 years so I wanted to be able to enjoy it. -
Even if you are vegetarian your body still needs protein.

What's the first food you cheated with after Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
cantseemytoes replied to NoBsVs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
there are many vegan Protein shakes that use wither hemp protein or ben protein etc. these are lactose free and a godsend to people who have lactose issues. You can find many of them online or your local Vitamin shoope or Vitamin Shoppe online. Good luck! Try Sprouts. They carry many vegan and vegetarian Protein Shakes. -

Here are a few Q&A's from the ASMBS: Q: How much Protein do I need daily? A: Most patients get 60-80 grams daily, but some may require more depending on their response to surgery or their type of operation. Your dietitian can provide more detailed information. Q: Can I take all of the protein in one dose? A: Protein should be taken in multiple doses, across multiple meals or healthy Snacks. The body cannot absorb more than approximately 30 grams at once. Also, protein is a nutrient that helps us feel fuller, longer. If we try to include Proteins in each of our meals or healthy snacks, we’re less likely to feel hungry when it’s not time to eat. Q: How should I get my protein? With shakes? Bars? What if I’m a vegetarian? A: There are many options even for those with special dietary needs or preferences. Your dietitian can provide additional information on protein sources. meats, eggs, dairy products, and Beans are common protein sources in everyday foods. Protein extracts made from soy, brown rice and whey are commonly sold in stores. Protein Shakes or bars may offer additional ways to meet your protein needs. You may find it helpful to calculate your daily protein intake to be sure you’re not falling short. As you are able to tolerate more regular foods, you get a higher portion of the requirement during regular meals and supplements become less necessary. Q: What happens if I don’t take in enough protein? A: The body needs additional protein during the period of rapid weight loss to maintain your muscle mass. Protein is also required for your metabolism to occur. If you don’t provide enough protein in your diet, the body will take its protein from your muscles and you can become frail. -
Great to reinvigorate the recipes conversation, but likely more helpful on the forum labeled for it. Scroll down in the support groups section and towards the bottom is Food and Nutrition, and it's separated by things like what stage of eating you're in and if your vegetarian, gluten-free, etc. It's a good section and I've found some great ideas there!

considering going vegetarian, need some advice
pookybear posted a topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
Right now I only eat poultry and tuna for meat. The only reasons I haven't already gone completely vegetarian are that I haven't quite figured out how to get in all my protein without meat, and my boyfriend pretty much eats the same things that I eat and I don't want to force him to go vegetarian (also, he is not a fan of veggies. he will eat some, but not happily). Has anyone dealt with these dilemmas? I know there are plenty of choices for plant-based proteins, but maybe seeing some examples of meals will help ease the anxiety a little. What are some things you make for vegetarian meals? Especially meals that can be made for both of us and I can add meat to his and not mine. The cost of buying double the food (meals for him and meals for me) is also a worry of mine. I was planning to try it out for this week when we went grocery shopping this weekend, but I totally chickened out. I need help lol. -
Day one of 2 week pre-op liquid diet
jenpa replied to IandIalone's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Day one of pre-op liquid ... oh my !!! 7 days to go- my choices are Limited as I am a vegetarian I don’t eat broths from meat. It’s really hard just trying not to think about it & staying busy. Can’t believe in 7 days I will have 3 sleeves in stead of just the 2 on my shirts... hang in there everyone... my friend said on the other side it’s just so much easier this is the hard part but the payoff is well worth it!!! You all inspire me to keep going-especially the people doing two and three weeks I’m only one week!!! -
Are you considering vegetarianism or full veganism? Being a true vegan is extremely hard, and with WLS you need some protein. I don't eat anything that was alive, but I do eat eggs and cheese, both good protein sources. You'll really have to read labels closely. Anything with gelatin in it isn't vegetarian since it's made of cow hooves. Even many of the vitamins you'll have to take after your surgery aren't vegetarian. Any type of gel cap medicine isn't vegetarian. And it's hard to find an omega-3 fatty acid supplement since those are usually made of fish oil. There are some good vegetable broths out there--when I make soup I use them instead of chicken broth. Anyway, good luck!

Approved - but Should I Go through with it?
Cape Crooner replied to wwboy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I actually never gave surgery a second thought once I did my research on the VSG. And I convulsed that it simply returns my stomach to the size/shape it was when I was a kid (before my mother started loading me up on Fritos and Ho-Ho's). BTW, I probably would not have done r-n-y because of all the plumbing reroute that goes with it. And the band does not work (which may be the case with the propel your therapist was talking about). The second thing I did was take both the pre-pre opt and pre-opt diet very seriously. My understanding is that this is the only sound way to avoid post-opt complications. I lost 30 pounds in 2 months before surgery. I exercised my core every day and went to a top rated hospital near Boston rather than the one nearest my house. My surgery went incredibly well. Other than dealing with my post opt eating restrictions, I already feel better than I've felt in a very long time. My ultimate rationale came down to this: 1. How much do I need to lose to become healthy again (in my case, this was probably 70 pounds). 2. What are the chances that I'll lose this much and keep it off on my own. My answer was 0%. 3. If I take that leap of faith and assume I could lose 70 pounds on my own, how long would it take and how much of my life would I have to change. This third question turned out to be the key. No matter how I looked at it, it would take much more time and sacrifice to lose 70 pounds through conventional methods than with the VSG. In my case, probably a year plus vs. about 6 months. And of course with the sleeve, my odds of keeping it off go through the roof. Finally, going vegetarian or vegan will do nothing to help you lose weight. Consider the following are on most vegan diets: French Fries chips and guacamole Sugar and all the evil things that come along with it Bread, P&J Onion Rings Home Fries I know how unhealthy a vegan diet can be. I watched my daughter put her husband on it and all he ate all day was the stuff in this list. After a year, she switched to pescatarian and he's much healthier. Take the time to truly evaluate the alternatives in terms of time/sacrifice and do not allow staying or returning to a heavy unhealthy weight to be an option. I think it will become a no-brainier. -
Anybody Reach Goal Without Doing Low Carb?
feedyoureye replied to Sassygirl06's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a vegetarian so most of my protein sources have carbs in them. I eat around 90-150 carbs a day, mostly from good clean sources with a few chocolate chips thrown in for good measure! I keep track of calories, get in my 65+ gms of protein a day, and try to get in variety for the rest of my 1100-1400 cals a day. I have 6 pounds to get to "normal" weight and have eaten regular food mostly the whole time. I think of myself as losing slowly, but 82 pounds in 10 months is NOT that slow. The 10 more pounds I am shooting for will come off eventually... while I am eating good whole grain, garden grown, home made carb including food in small doses. I love my sleeve! ...the only "phony" food I eat is hi quality vegetarian protein foods, like protein chips, bars, cereal and drinks... to help me keep my protein up and keep my hands off of junk like candy bars and chips. You have to figure out for yourself what you can live with for the long run. -

Vegetarian Menu Planning for protein? (not individual recipes)
linlew posted a topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
Hey all, I'm starting to test out some soft proteins now that I'm a week out of RNY and successfully getting in my liquid and protein requirements. I'm confident that as a veggie I could get 60g of protein in with three meals, but I'm getting a wee worried about getting that done in three bebe meals like the ones I'll now be eating. Has anyone come across sample menus like the hordes that are available for meat eaters? If not, I'll continue to just kinda wing it, but it's always nice to get some outside ideas! Thanks! -

any vegetarian bandsters?
melidawn replied to melidawn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's good to hear. I am a vegetarian and was just concerned about protein but I think I will do great I was just wondering if anyone had any great suggestions. They put me on the Atkins diet for 2 weeks preop and it was really hard for me being a vegetarian but I learned How to really watch carbs which will definitely help in the future -
I don't eat Red meat, and that was due to the band so I accepted and went with it since the benefits are obvious...I don't care for dairy products either...but I still eat chicken and fish.... So I'm not sure what that nakes me, other than healthier..... I'm sure, the more I learn and the more I adapt, I will become more vegetarian eventually.....

I am just curious if there are any fellow vegetarians that have had lap band surgery or in the process of having it?

I give myself a B12 shot once a month. Yes, I notice a difference with my energy and mood. I have a history of low B12 (lifelong vegetarian) and so I need to do the shots - they are easy to administer. I buy the B12 online and the syringes from Amazon. Easy peasy. Trouble is with pills is you tend to just pee them out.

how about vegetarian refried beans--they have 0 fat because they are not made with animal fat. very tasty, high in Protein, and Fiber. butternut squash soup split pea soup, made with chicken broth, chicken bouillon cubes, bay leaves, and your favorite spices is excellent cream of wheat grits and the "tender harvest" brand of gerber baby food has one called "chicken and wild rice." excellent.

HELP How do I get all my protein?
BLERDgirl replied to chip305's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ask her to give you a sample diet to follow. I meet my Protein requirements, but I do have at least one Protein shake a day. I eat between 600 - 800 calories a day. My Breakfast is a shake using Isopure unflavored whey Protein powder, ½ cup of Fage 0% greek yogurt and either a bit of fresh fruit or a tablespoon of almond butter. Occasionally I add ½ a tbsp of raw honey. To this I add ½ a cup of Water and mix it in the nutra bullet. I drink half before my morning workout and the other half post workout. This yields 30 - 38 gms of protein. The rest of the day is easy since I've now gotten most of my protein in. I then eat regular lunch. Pretty much whatever strikes my fancy. Sometimes it's just a soft scrambled egg with a tsp of salsa and a bit of avocado, or it could be blackbeans with a sunnyside up egg and a sprinkling of shredded cheese. I spend most of the afternoon sipping water. dinner varies from Soup to a small salad with a hardboiled egg and/or a meat substitute (I am vegetarian) That could be tofu, tempeh, seitan, and occasionally Beyond meat products. I typically dress my salads with a bit of EVOO. My avg protein consumed this week is 67.5 I am not saying it can't be done, but if she wants you to keep your calories that low, meet your protein requirements, AND not use any Protein shakes, she needs to provide you with some specific examples. -
Huge Emergency Issue. Proti-Diet liquid protein is NOT vegetarian/kosher and my surgery is Monday!
JerseyCityGal replied to JerseyCityGal's topic in Food and Nutrition
I called my surgeons office and they said Isopure would be an appropriate substitute, so I went to GNC last night and bought enough bottles for the first two weeks post-surgery. A lot of really good suggestions here for vegetarian/kosher options. Surgery is Monday, so I have a couple of weeks to check them all out and place a few orders and see which ones my taste buds like best when I get a couple of weeks out. I really want to thank everyone for their help and suggestions. -

so you have to have vegetarian drinks? never heard of that being a requirement pre-surgery. Is that a sleeve thing? My dr. put me on a liver shrinking diet pre-surgery. Protein drinks /bars and one lean cuisine at dinner. lost 10 lbs pre-surgery. -
TOFU Cooking Techniques and Recipes PLEASE
Vex replied to Lynn_Marie's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Glad to be able to be able to help! I also love Ken's Asian. Yes, I imagine a lot of people do do that. I'm not vegetarian, but I did it for one year on a bet (long story) and got to try alot of stuff I normally wouldn't have. I love tofu and eat it pretty regularly, now, and even I don't usually care for straight up raw tofu, unless its in a strongly-flavored Soup. Its really bland like that and reminiscent of very bland, unsalted cottage cheese.
