Bariatric Pal Store??? Non-whey options.
mousecat88 replied to mousecat88's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Thank you. I'm not vegetarian or vegan, I just get sick from whey proteins specifically. I can have milk/yogurt/etc totally fine... but when it's a whey shake... super nauseous. I use soy protein shakes. I've found a few things off the bariatricpal site that I've ordered, like the lentil curry and the sloppy joe mix. I did order the oatmeal, which I believe is whey, but sometime it's hit or miss so I'm going to give it a shot! -

UPDATE for Day 2 (day 1 for me bc I'm terrible at timing) Um,. this is the worst thing in the world. :c ALL YO GIRL WANTED YESTERDAY WAS A DAMN APPLE. I was walking past while grocery shopping, staring at them the way I used to stare at like the cannoli or something. I also had an appointment with my RD yesterday and told her about it, and she was like "WTF why are you doing this to yourself?" I told her it was all for the sake of experimentation. Before surgery, I was a vegetarian. I feel like I naturally feel more comfortable with a lot of vegetables in my diet, but we shall progress! Protein: 80 g Carbs: 20 g Fat: 18 g 600 calories My RD wasn't very happy with my calorie counts, she said she wants at LEAST 1,000 a day. Which feels impossible to me, I feel like I eat CONSTANTLY. I did "cheat" at the end of the night and eat an Enlightened ice cream bar. But I don't care, and it was good. lol. -

Hi y’all I won’t join you but I am gonna just do a low carb week, no “treats” and good healthy eating. My wife is a vegetarian who personally struggles with my eating meat any time she has to see (or smell) it, but is supportive given my surgery. An all-meat-all-week week would do her head in! That said, if anyone is interested in a special meat and cheese week from 18th Dec up to (but I think not including!) Christmas Day, I am in! That is a ‘batchelor’ week for me, with my other half having already headed off to family, and I don’t join them all until late on 24th. So that week I have been planning steak, pork ribs, black pudding, bacon... mmmmmmmmm -
Totally almost forgot: I got roped into eating lasagna (vegetarian, it was made for me as a surprise), but only had the filling of ricotta and vegetables. Didn't touch a noodle. Flexibility=1/Peer pressure=0

My dietician agreed, one of the first foods recommended, but then Wendy's is headquarter in nearby Dublin, Ohio. And I like it just fine, or I did before the installation of Precious Pouch, my only criticism, they put celery in their chili, herasy where I come from! And Lord help you, if you unexpectedly get Cincinnati chili. See it was brainchild of Greek instead of Tex-Mex land. Has cinnamon instead of chili powder in seasoning. Now I am a Central Ohio gal, eaten both, enjoyed both, but sorry Queen City people, I still like Wendy's more. But with Cincy, it's 3 or 4 way for me. A Southern chick like Lynn, or even Big Viffer from Dayton have probably a better explaination than me. But here it goes-- 3 way, c.c. on bed of spaghetti topped with shredded cheddar cheese, for 4 way you add onions, 5 way onions and beans, there is also I think vegetarian 3 way, but I have never tried that! AND the best brand-Skyline. And late lamented loathed it, funny I'm still around, isn't it? I don't eat it anymore because unless you make it yourself there is cocoa in it, and my allergy would make me a sick little puppy. Google All Recipes for The recipe for Cincinnati chili, complex seasonings but if you're from Southern Ohio& Northern Kentucky it's like Mothers Milk to you!

How will you handle Thanksgiving?
Jazzy1125 replied to libbyleeb's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am just starting puree, so i will be sticking to my puree menu of some sort. I will be however cooking as my son is a vegetarian, daughter is high protein low carb and son in law only one to eat whatever LOL.. So i will cook, they are all in their mid 20s and i do not want any of them to be without. We always get together for the hanging out and maybe a venture out to see the crazy black friday stuff, or just stay in and watch movies. It will be a later than normal dinner because daughter has to work in the morning. ( She works for Disney- and gets out at 4) so dinner will be at 6 -
There are quite a few vegetarians and vegans on this board. Maybe you want to check out the veg threads?

Thanks for your reply, Fluffy!! Understood on all counts. As I mentioned in my reply to KT above, I'm not actually freaking out; more just jealous/annoyed. You know...ranting. . I know things will work and I've always understood it'll be my job, not the pouch's, to not eat like an a**hole. Thanks for the helpful explanation around the "fullness" feeling though. It's a hard thing to articulate, and it's good to hear it from a vet. I've also been a vegetarian for 9 years, so moving to solids seems like it'll be less of a transition for some reason. Although, I've been debating moving back to eating meat, because while definitely possible, eating whole foods as a veggie and hitting goals seems harder than if I incorporate some meat back in. Just something I'm thinking about.

Woohoo!!!
I had my VSG surgery on Thursday, 11/15...
Some of the things I've learned in the last couple days:
Applesauce is the devils food. (It's the only thing that's made me vomit so far).
Getting enough fluid/protein in is a challenge... Any tips?
(I'm vegetarian, so bone broth is out...)
Walking has always been my favorite form of exercise, short of swimming, but it is now a necessity... get that gas OUT!
& I LOVE nurses!! I was in intense pain post-op & the nurses were amazing.. they were amazing throughout my short stay.
(& they are the only people on the planet that can tell you: "I can hear your intestines moving!" & make it sound like: "& the Oscar goes to...") :D
Thanks to everyone on here who has helped get this journey started.
I'm incredibly excited for the next phases moving forward! :) -
1.5 years out - I get a cold/flu every month. Please help!

You can go the natural route: Goldenseal as antibiotic/antiviral and Vitamin C (high doses) & Echinacea for immune support. Probiotics (commercial form or kimchi/sauerkraut/kombucha) to return gut microbiotic balance Check mineral levels (zinc is used in a lot of natural cold remedies) Protective medicinal teas (research heavily first) Switching your diet up (organic, non GMO, gluten free, vegetarian, raw, etc. to see if there is a difference) Eliminate allergens (food and environmental like carrageenan and mold) Ponder if it's stress or work related (certain jobs can make you ill through constant exposure to XYZ) Run these ideas past your primary doctor/bariatric team and see what they think. Ask to be tested for everything that can cause chronic illness as well. (Don't forget STIs) Safe Journey! -
The Dreaded Holidays

This year is my first year with my tiny tum also. Only i will be 2 weeks post op thanksgiving day. Normally thanksgiving is me and my kids get together. My daughter works at Disney and has to work during the day. My son is now a vegetarian (recently converted, maybe 5 months ago) and now i will be able to have only puree. I believe this year we are skipping the festivities, and are just going to hang out together in the evening and my son and i will do a mini day trip until my daughter gets out of work -instead of spending the day in the kitchen cooking stuff none of us will eat. -
Vegetarian Menu Planning for protein? (not individual recipes)
linlew posted a topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
Hey all, I'm starting to test out some soft proteins now that I'm a week out of RNY and successfully getting in my liquid and protein requirements. I'm confident that as a veggie I could get 60g of protein in with three meals, but I'm getting a wee worried about getting that done in three bebe meals like the ones I'll now be eating. Has anyone come across sample menus like the hordes that are available for meat eaters? If not, I'll continue to just kinda wing it, but it's always nice to get some outside ideas! Thanks! -

Not sure if your program allows beans...but vegetarian refried beans (lower in fat) with red enchilada sauce and cheese melted in. My fave soft food stage meal! Also soups were great...I tolerated split pea and broccoli cheese well. Sent from my moto g(6) play using BariatricPal mobile app -
Creamers are high in sugar, generally...and heavy cream is high in fat. I know a lot of people like the flavored ready to drink premier protein shakes as a coffee creamer. They have chocolate, caramel, etc! Protein coffee! For softies I like low fat cottage cheese, soups of all kinds (blended so they're not chunky, no pasta or rice), yogurts like triple zero by oikos. Once I could have beans I also liked vegetarian refried beans with some mild taco sauce and cheese, thinned out a little. Laughing cow cheese wedges are low in calories, carbs and fat. Good luck!! Cool! I'm gonna make the PB cookies for Mr. F. this weekend. I'll freeze them to have on hand for him. Sometimes he will get a sweet tooth and want a little bite of something. I'm gonna try making it with the PB Slim powder and maybe egg whites (to see how low I can get em in cals!--cuz we don't need the extra fat around here). Might add a bit of WF Marshmallow Dip for the sweetener. I know...eek!!! I bet it is the fat...but magnesium tests are sometimes false. And the dried fruit thing just seems like...hmmm. Maybe magnesium? Why not try an epsom salt bath. Very relaxing. And you should totes get more fat, cuz of the vegetarian thing. Since we eat meat and avocados I think we have a diff situation. So funny we were posting about peanut butter at the same time this morning! Get out of mah head!!!! LOL. -

Forbes: Why high protein diets may be linked to Cancer
MargoCL replied to Creekimp13's topic in Rants & Raves
Sorry, that was for @Creekimp13, not sure how your name got "quoted" - very weird, but my pc and phone have been acting up.... apologies to you. I didn't say or imply anyone was a vegetarian / vegan, just stated that being one wouldn't prevent cancer either. -

1) These are not "my links". 2) This is not about becoming a vegetarian or vegan. AFAIK neither creek nor I are vegetarians or vegans. -
Forbes: Why high protein diets may be linked to Cancer
MargoCL replied to Creekimp13's topic in Rants & Raves
While I appreciate your "links" to all these horrible cancer related posts, I find it overkill. We are all adults here and hopefully wise enough to conduct our own research to know what side effects could come about. Honestly, if you were to read every medical journal out there, you would find a link to cancer with everything we put into our bodies. So, thank you for these posts, but allow us to conduct our own research. For myself, I have / do conduct my own research before I change my lifestyle. And the truth is - your diet doesn't need to be all Vegetarian or Vegan to prevent cancer. -
Food Before and After Photos

Found a yummy recipe that i want to try i though i would share. You can make it very adaptable by switching up the ingredients for vegetarians, or your food tolerance or preferences. http://afterthesleeve.blogspot.com/2012/09/80-calorie-southwest-taquitos.html?m=1 -
My best friend and I go out to lunch several times a month. About 3 years ago, she developed an aggressive form of breast cancer. Part of her treatment was to become vegetarian. We both would have suffered if she didn't want to meet up with me because she couldn't eat what I ate. Instead, I made it my challenge to find great tasting vegan/vegetarian restaurants that she hadn't tried yet. Even if I ate some grilled chicken, she was ok, because we had gone somewhere that had good, tempting options for her, as well. After I had my surgery, we found places that were not only vegetarian but offered bariatric-friendly soups, too. Maybe your friends can help you identify the best virgin-drinks in town or offer to be your ride (once you can have a drink or two). Another great support is someone (or more) who are willing to share a couple of bites of their meals with you so that you get the experience without having to waste an entire entree. Giving up our former relationship with food causes grieving and we can go through the steps of grief. You are in the anger stage right now, but you will transition through it and life will be good again.

Either you will have to purchase separate vitamins or get super expensive vegan one... I use: Members Mark Adult multi vitamins gummies (Sam's club-$10/320 gummies) Or SpringValley Organic Multi vitamins (Walmart-$10/30 tablets) Veglife Vegan iron 25mg (Whole foods,$15/100 pills) Topcare Calcium Citrate petites (regional stores, search online) All of my choices are gelatin free, vegetarian friendly, kosher or Halal suitable Hope that helps!

I'm just happy to see more action in the vegetarian section!!! I love hearing about the proper ways to eat different foods, to maximize their nutritional intake. Very interesting topic!
