Any April 2018 Sleevers?!?!
MSTaurus replied to Itsnicoleee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi! I had my surgery April 9th. I now mix GENEPRO’s unflavored Protein Powder in with my applesauce. Let me know how to keep in touch! I’m so confused by all the vitamin stuff too still! -
VSG on 4/16/18: My journey
TexasMommy80 replied to TexasMommy80's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I like the strawberry Premier Protein, but milk products are causing serious stomach issues right now, so I had to put that on hold. I also like the Genepro in Crystal Light, but I only count about half of the protein. -
Any April surgery buddies

Oh, Nikki31, I’m sorry you’re going through a tough time. I have to admit, as soon as I got home, I tried a new protein drink from Core Power. In one sip, it didn’t sit right. I thought maybe I’m not ready for shakes, but tried again, and the 2nd sip felt like I was gonna die. I can’t even explain the pain. Needless to say, I will never touch a Core Power anything. I got an Ensure in the hospital, and I tried that, and didn’t have a problem with gas or bloating. I’ve since tried Premier and Genepro, and have been fine. You might consider unflavored protein, and you can sprinkle that thing in anything. I even put it in my flavored water for added bonus. Genepro and Unjury have one, and both are available online or GNC. Wishing you well! -
I’m Interested-What Kind/Brand Of Protein Is Everyone On?
TexasMommy80 replied to MACPOWER's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’ve given up on protein drinks for a while. Now I am drinking chocolate mootopia, and 8oz has 12g of protein. They also have lactose free, so that has helped me. I am also using genepro but counting one scoop as only 15g of protein. Age: 37 Height: 5’6 BMI: 37 VSG: 4/16/18 GW: 160 MFP: Fit4LifeAR -
6 weeks out and I vomit everything I eat
Myaiku_Kuraitani replied to jacky0218's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Only reasons I could think of is either it could be a stricture which I hope I'm wrong... Or it could be that maybe you have to wait longer, much longer between bites. Does it happen with literally everything or can you maybe try unsweetened apple sauce and see how well you do with that? If that sits well, maybe add genepro with it and get protein in that way. Another reason could be, those foods you've listed you just don't tolerate well at this time. I'm almost a year out and I just discovered that my stomach hates homemade orange juice... But doesn't mind homemade lemonade. Hw-273 Sw-226 CW-125 GW-130 Size- 2, Small in sweats. Small in shirts. depends on how it's cut or made. Considering Genepro just lost a lawsuit last December in which they were found to be "falsely claiming it contains 30 grams of protein in a roughly 11.15 gram (1 tablespoon) serving when GenePro has 10 or fewer grams of protein", this isn't exactly old news. If was going to go down hill wouldn't yu think 5 years would show somethimg? No, that's not how protein deficiencies work http://time.com/4374959/protein-health-benefits-nutrition/ "Like that termite-ridden house that looks fine on the outside, your protein-deprived body will have grown weaker over a period of many years. Exactly how will depend on the person and the type of adversity he or she faces. “It’s just not as simple as watching out for a few specific warning signs,” Paddon-Jones says. Franch agrees. “It’s not going to be possible to self-diagnose a protein deficiency,” he says."

Any Oregon Sleevers here?
LessOfMo replied to apositivelife4me's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my VSG done on April 2nd at Legacy Good Samaritan in Portland. Dr. Emma Patterson from Oregon Weight Loss Surgery (OWLS) was my surgeon, with her partner Dr. Avishai Meyer assisting. Surgery was a breeze, taking about 2hrs, and then I stayed one night. I've been doing great so far post-op, and was able to manage any pain with liquid Tylenol and ibuprofen, which you can get at Target or Walmart. Thankfully I haven't really had any trouble with nausea, and am currently 13lbs down from surgery day weight. Getting enough protein in is the hardest part, but GenePro unflavored protein powder has been my lifesaver on that one. There's 30g of protein per scoop, and 2 scoops easily mix into a 32oz Gatorade (I always get the lowest sugar option available), and adding a scoop to low-fat Greek yogurt is a great, protein filled way to start one's day. -
Thank you maybe people will quit being so critical of GENEPRO. I am a long time user and I love it.
-
The bags of genepro in the stores now have a sticker over them that say 30g per SCOOP not Tbsp.

I don't know your background with research and science. But if you read the label it has two ** next to that. And it says according to this study. If you pull up that study (which is the basis of their ridiculous claims) on genepros website. You'll first see the study was paid for by... Genepro! (shocker). And then if you read the actual study (which is posted on their website) you'll see that it's extremely poorly designed, and I do not believe comes even remotely close to supporting their claim. So if your surgeon said it's fine odds are he just blew you off not wanting to waste his time reading the label on a protein shake (and I can't blame them because what kind of surgeon is going to spend their times reading their patients labels and studys) But all you have to do is read it and say hmm does this look like a well designed study? Now I'm no researcher or statistician myself, but I am comfortable attempting to read a study and look for relationships and make inferences about probability. And this does not look like it proves their point. And I don't think anybody should be defending genepro unless they A) read the label, which clearly states what they're basing their claims on B ) read the study It's pretty clear to me that it's not worth it. This isn't to suggest Genepro is bad, because the odds are as a protein supplement itself it's likely the same as any other. The problem I see is that its very likely that it's not supplying remotely close to the amount of Protein that you think it is. If you're dead set on taking genepro you should probably be taking close to double doses to be getting close to as much is listed on the label.

The problem is the FDA doesn't have the authority to test the claims of supplements. They only regulate if the products are adulterated or misbranded. https://www.fda.gov/Food/DietarySupplements/ If the FDA was in the business of regulating claims then we wouldn't see all of these "miracle weight loss cures" or "anti aging pills", right? Pure protein has 4 calories per gram. It's not possible for "different types of protein" to have less than that. http://www.dining.ucla.edu/housing_site/dining/SNAC_pdf/CaloriesCount.pdf Here are the details of the lawsuit, it was just finalized December of last year https://www.leagle.com/decision/infdco20171213e89 Some key points of the lawsuit: SI03, Inc the makers of Syntrax sued MuscleGen the makers of Genepro over the claims that "MuscleGen markets its GenePro product by falsely claiming it contains 30 grams of protein in a roughly 11.15 gram (1 tablespoon) serving when GenePro has 10 or fewer grams of protein per 11.15 gram (1 tablespoon) serving" "GenePro's marketing and packaging statement that it contains "medical grade" protein is incorrect, false, and misleading, as no industry or FDA standard for "medical grade" protein exists." Genepro did not even bother to respond to this lawsuit or show up in court, a default judgement was entered in favor the makers of Syntrax, against Genepro Since Genepro didn't even respond to this lawsuit, is it surprising they haven't taken down the claims the court deemed misleading & false? This is a civil lawsuit, the government plays no role in enforcing the judgement.

Starting a new Journey
thanksmcdonalds replied to Drez's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You can mix almost any protein powder with water, they just generally taste better with milk. There's also an unflavored protein called Genepro that is used by tons of bariatric patients. I haven't tried it yet but it costs about the same as the Legion brand. The unflavored won't be any less expensive than the flavored but you are able to get more creative with it and get more bang for your buck. -
Anyone have any ideas or can tell me how they use Genepro . I am only 9 days post op and im trying to reach protein goal so I purchased Genepro.

Some of us lose hair no matter how much protein we intake. It’s a process called telogen effluvium— http://drnichter.com/hair-loss-after-surgery-explained/ Like you I couldn’t possibly get in all my protein requirements without supplementation till well after a year post op, my restriction was too high. Try switching your shake! If it’s whey isolate move to one with caesin or whey concentrate or a combination. Or try plant based protein. Just stay away from collagen or genepro.

Revision to bypass
sweetm replied to Starfish23's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Here is a link about the mini bypass. It’s kinda the “new improved” version of a bypass. And it’s reversible if need be. I like that in case of complications:) https://www.obesitycoverage.com/mini-gastric-bypass-the-good-bad-and-ugly/ I checked out Popeyes today. I tried the LeanBody shake. Very sweet. Tomorrow I will try the Creed powder. Still can’t find Genepro here. When I’m in San Diego I’m hoping I can find a store and stock up:) -
Sleeved on 3/28 and doing pretty well. Today is my first days on pureed diet and I had a very soft scrambled egg this morning and it was great. Based on a sleeve group attendee I tried GENEPRO protein and it is tasteless just as he indicated. It's great to have this protein that I can mix with other stuff without adding a vanilla flavoring. I am finding my tastes on some things have changed, The Premier Protein water that had been my go to during liquid stage became unpalatable for me. Way to sweet and left a metallic type taste and even felt like a coating in my mouth. One day without it and thats all gone. Also I can no longer handle the chewable calcium tabs and multivitamin chewable that I was planning to use. They just taste way too sweet. But I'll find others.

Isopure vs. Premier Clear?
wjgo replied to Sprinkles1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I found the Premier Bananna & Cream to be much, much better. I detest their Vanilla flavor, it dies not suit my stomach well. Becareful with done of the Ensure drinks, some of them have high sugar content, at least for my program. You program probably allows you to have sugar free jello and pudding. Mix some chocolate pudding up with Fair Life milk (lots protein) and a couple of flavorless 30gr protein mix serving scoops. I use Genepro protein from local GNC store. Jello Pudding box says 4 servings, so it comes out to 15gr protein per serving, and with Fair Life milk, 21 grams. Regular milk totals it to 19 grams. WLS 3/30 post op day 6. Had trouble with my lithium meds when I introduced them day 2. Caused all day diarrhea for 2 days. My psychiatrist recommended reintroducing after a couple weeks. New stomach also can not tolerate the protein shake I had been using pre-op. Ugh. Switched to Genepro medical grade protein dded to chicken broth and doing fine. Watered down poweraid zero to make it less sweet and that is nice option to water. I tried 2oz of plain Greek yogurt on day 4&5 but the hives I have had since day of surgery have gotten progressively worse and I need to cut that out as well. 3 more days to purée! Never been so excited

Sick of cold and sweet
Sleeve1stFitNext replied to lo.la's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Genepro sold in the bariatric store, can be added to tea, broth, soup. It mixes in nicely. -
Add unflavored protein mix to your broth. I get mine at GNC. Genepro micronized protein. It dissolves very easy because it's very fine. The protein shakes are driving me crazy, I am going to go postal/Facebook soon. Do not buy vanilla flavored premier protein shakes. Trust mem Sent from my XT1609 using BariatricPal mobile app

Yes. I began taking 10,000 msg biotin, about 3 months before surgery. I began 4 550 mg beef gelatin about 3 months after&take a bariatric high dose vitamin about a few weeks after surgery. Doctor tests showed all vit levels normal. I DO struggle STILL to get in enough protein....food, in general. I cannot, 7 months after surgery, eat meat...eggs are about as unpleasant. I throw up if I eat too fast or often, if it's meat. I cannot tolerate the extremely sweet, nauseating protein shakes or bars. My best protein supplement is Genepro, which I mix in oatmeal, cottage cheese or a bit of sweet potato. Thanks for replies. I'm going to have to cut what's left of my hair. Has anyone used minoxidil??

I power lift so I have found myself eating 8 small meals a day. It feels like I am constantly eating. I have also added Genepro to my tea. I am trying to increase my protein intake. I need to get these muscles up.

As @jess9395 stated, there is no blood test that will determine if you are getting adequate protein. Hemogram - blood count CMP - Comprohensive Metaolic panel glucose level, electrolyte and fluid balance, kidney function, and liver function Vitamin D, B1, Ferratin, Pth, Folate -vitamin/mineral As far as Genepro, IMO, if this was legit they wouldn't be stating such clear falsehoods. You can't get 30 g of protein in a 15 g mass. Protein has 4 calories per gram, so why are the calories on Genepro so much lower? Finally the process they tout where they break protein molecules into smaller sizes and among other thing they remove some of the hydrogen ions, how is this even protein anymore, it is so highly manipulated?

5 days post op rxy gastric bypass so lost..
tankheadmommy replied to sarah ft's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had the lapband in 2009 and it was removed in 2017. I had RNY in Dec. I also had difficulty with feeling full and I had discussed this with other lapband revision patients and they have experienced this as well. I just made sure I measured everthing so I would heal properly. I still measure everything, because I do not get a full feeling. I used to cry when my family ate, because I wanted their food and I could not eat it. I spent a lot of time in my room when they ate to help me cope. When I started eating food, I started to feel better and I stopped feeling sorry for myself. I ended up being lactose intolerant, so I was not able to consume any diary. This could be the issue behind some of your GI issues. I felt so much better once all dairy was out of my diet. I used Nectar Fuzzy Navel and Genepro to help with my protein needs when I was on liquids. By the way, I also tasted food and then spit it out. We have food issues and it takes time after surgery (maybe a lifetime) to work through our food issues. We need to be kind and love ourselves even when we make a bad choice. I hope this helps you to feel better.[emoji4] Sent from my SM-T818T using BariatricPal mobile app -
Im almost certain the reason they're allowed to label it 30g of protein is because it has two asterisks next to it, stating **equivalencies based on the clinical trial (which i linked above). Even GENEPRO doesnt claim it has 30g of protein, because it absolutely doesnt. It literally states equivalency based upon THEIR clinical trial (that they paid for). Im surprised more nutrition companies haven't employed this tactic Its really not a huge deal though, and likely would make little to no difference unless youre getting the majority/almost all of your protein from Genepro. But if youre taking 1 serving of the stuff a day, its a moot point imo
