1 month post op...what is everyone eating and how much?
morphinmom posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi! Had surgery on 9/17. Just curious what and how much people are eating. I find that yogurt does down..no problems. When I eat solid food, I get a "full" feeling after a couple of small bites (not even an ounce) but I eat more because I wouldnt be getting anywhere near the 65 g. of protein. The feeling doesn't get worse until I eat a couple of ounces (volume not weight) and I know it is time to stop. Does anyone get that "full" feeling after a 2 or 3 bites of food, that stays that way until you eat a couple of ounces? Does that go away? -
i usually bring cold cut rollups, meatballs in sauce, grilled chicken breast, hard boiled egg with salt and pepper, mini babybel cheese or a cheese stick/string cheese, a greek yogurt with a teaspoon of sf chocolate chips to add some "dessert like quality" - could add almonds or nuts too, i'm just not cleared for those yet). so long as you have a fridge available, of course!

Hi Ladie - I'm not an August 12 but I am hear to tell you the liquids are kind of rough. The problems I am having are it takes all day to get my fluids in and I am very worn out from lack of calories. I can have yogurt without fruit and my protein also but they sit very heavy.

4 days post-op : feeling more normal day by day
audefacere posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved 10/27 and I only had a one night stay in the hospital. I had not complications and no nausea. I did have gas bubbles really bad the first time I tried chicken broth. I got really car sick on the way home but I didn't throw up. When I go home I felt really overwhelmed and had second thoughts about going home so early. I was able to sleep off my doubts but it wasn't until today that I started to feel less weak and more normal. I have been able to get in my yogurt, milk, and Water. I haven't had any nausea with any of the food I've tried on my full liquid diet. My pain level has definitely diminished but I still have JP drain in which tugs sometimes uncomfortable. I get that taken out tomorrow which I'm excited about. All and all, I'm feeling less helpless and more like this was the right decision. Plus 5 lbs lost in 4 days isn't bad! How is everyone else doing? -
cool! we are on then! i didnt walk thirty minutes today . Im working late and my job is standing and staring non stop. i move my arms a little. i plan to walk tomorrow though. Can you walk tomorrow for thirty minutes too? im going in the morning, i have more energy then, and i can shower after and feel fantastic. im taking my ipod. RE: energy.. are you getting enough Protein? i do a shake in the morning thats high in protien and relatively low in calories, gets me going. heres the basic recipie, can of course be altered: (put in blender and blend) a handful of pecans or walnuts a container of probiotic yogurt (any yogurt works) (cut in half if mixture is too much) a scoop of soy Protein powder (can get this at grocery or walmart) a half of a cup of 2percent milk (can cut this in half or substite Water if mixture is too much) a dose of metimucl or any Fiber laxitive Iron supplement (tablet) vit c tablet Multivitamin acidolpholis tablets (two) vit b dot two tablespoons flax oil (great for your hair, teeth and nails) any other supplements youd rather not swallow whole, i use collegen. and last, about a fistfull of frozen fruit (important no sugar added) i sometimes use blueberries (cause i live in maine) but strawberries are easy to find and keep in freezer. Blend until its all mixed up well. It should be no more than a pint of stuff, and drink it slow, i dont even do coffee or tea anymore in the mornings because it takes me all my "oh my god im awake" time to get it down. It lasts me until around one pm, then its time for lunch anyway. I like it because if you dont get in good meals for the rest of your day, your bases are already covered when your body needs it most, in the mornings to break your fast. it also helps keep me from grazing around. it is usually really thick and feels like im being very naughty when everything in it is just what your body needs at this point. let me know if you wind up trying it, and what you think.

Protein Shakes - how long?
padlrd replied to VTMnkyGrl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
70-80 grams a day is what I was told I have a protein drink for breakfast you can mix it with skim milk or soy or make it into a smoothie using Greek yogurt protein mix and fresh fruit according to what stage your at or PB2 and some sugar free flavoring that's all good for about 25-35 gms mu nut says that's a good start for a long time even for life if you weren't a breakfast eater you just need to look for higher protein fish tuna low fat cheeses beans etc who would have thought a string cheese would be lunch -
I had the sleeve done on Feb 23,2012. I'm looking for any suggestions on do's and dont's. I can eat yogurt and cottage cheese now and mashed potatoes. I'm trying to eat 90 grams of protein a day. I've tried the EAS protein drinks and they are good. What protein shakes do you guys like? I'm very excited to hear from you guys !

When you put them in the shake, the entire shake tastes yuck. Try crushing the pills and taking them with a small amount of pudding or yogurt. It will taste bad, but then you can kill the taste with sips from your protein shake.

Dibaby44 replied to IamKe69's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Im June 23 and it really is flying by. Although i have to go back in monday to be scoped and opened up. I cant eat anything, even yogurt for the past 5 days. So one bump in the road. Hope you are doing well with it. Im literally melting away. 46 pounds all together -
I'm now just a few days over 3 weeks post op gastric bypass and so far eating somewhat normally again, err, well for my "new normal." I thought these tips might be useful to others... Things that go down fine (and are pleasurable to eat) oatmeal (I buy the quick packets of organic oatmeal, no sugar added), lowfat 1% milk just cover them in a bowl and microwave a minute to a minute and 1/2. Add a handful of fresh strawberries and blueberries with a sprinkle of splenda a spash more milk. Yummy and fills you up with no issues (at least for me) Salads - I've really had no problems enjoying a small salad. No sugar added popsicles (about 25 to 35 calories each) - very soothing and tasty Black bean Soup and almost any cream Soups in the cartons (roasted red pepper etc.) Chili - in small quantities most canned soups like Progresso heart healthy laughing cow cheese - actually, I'm not a big fan but these are fine Light and Fit greek yogurt - 80 calories - these are good Stouffers mac and cheese cups - these are high in fat but only 240 calories or so since you're eating a small amount and a tasty treat once and a while Vitarain from costco - about $10 a case eggs so long as they're cooked soft Low Fat 1 or 2% cottage cheese Almonds - just a few once and a while Flank steak - flank steak is tender, slice it thin, saute with some peppers and just remember small amounts Popcorn air popped - just a small bowl with a tiny drizzle of butter and a little salt Artificial crab - fine in small amounts. Jello Things that hurt to avoid or eat very, very slowly Pasta/Noodles - even small quantities are pretty tough to keep down chicken, especially white meat - doesn't digest well Crackers - almost any kind - a few rice crackers maybe but all others don't feel good to me ground meat - a bit easier then chicken but still, very small amounts bread or bagels - don't feel good anything fried in oil The key is always listen to your body. Chew well, wait for it to go down, see how it feels, if it feels bad stop or slow way down. Hopefully this makes sense to some folks. I'm hoping things get easier but I'm adapting well to my "new normal."

hey all!! Thanks very much for all your kind words :rolleyes2: The doctor too thought at firs tthat i was eating too much/ wrong foods/ too quickly...but i assured him that i am eating 1 cup of food three times a day as directed by my dietitian, and he said that was small meals so that wasnt it. I took it upon myself (which probably wasnt a good thing to do anyway..) to not move on to the next stage, which is solids because i honestly didnt think i was ready for them...i mean my mushies are quite firm, but im not eating whole chicken or anything like that yet...My diet primarly consists of Yogurt and maybe some grapes in the morning...Lunch is generally fish and mashed sweet potato, and then dinner is generally fish again, or chicken mince, with mashed potato or Pasta...At the moment im struggling to eat things like tomato, carrot, egg, rice (which was expected) umm chicken...but mostly carrot for some bizarre reason... I think i was just in a bad mood after that appt. I realise now that he has done it for a reason, and thanks again for all your support!!!

Hey everyone I had the lapband removed and had the gastric sleeve done on August 6th. I am really feeling pretty good overall . My one thing is I am not sure if I am having gas pain or a hunger pain at this point in my recovery? I asked surgeon he said no but that is what it feels like. I have been on liquids for 3 weeks now and really want food, like a yogurt has anyone cheated and what was the consequence of doing that? The band never really worked for me so really hope this is my answer. -

Talieanne replied to dlmacarthur's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I Did clear liquids for a week after (really 5 days), then full liquids for a week, now I'm at soft and probably won't get the go ahead for more regular foods until at least my one month check up. I did have a lot of gas pain the first week or two. Now at three weeks and am just getting part of that hungry feeling back. Usually it is just my tummy telling me to drink more water! Or at least that's what I'm telling myself. Lol. Just realize that your stomach is probably swollen and tender and so you have to be kind to it. I think I had yogurt as part of my full liquid after a week though... -

I am having the hardest time. I don't know what to eat and I do feel hunger. I eat yogurt with genpro for breakfast. Even though I could have scrambled eggs now. Then last night after broth for lunch. I had refrained beans. I wanted more but I was scared. I think I had about 1/3 of a cup. Anyway. I'm struggling and don't feel like I'm losing. I am so scared I did this for nothing. I love real food. So the sf puddings are wearing on me. I don't like sweet as much as not. Help. What are you guys eating two weeks post op. How much. How often. Thanks. -
I use the Syntrax Nectar. My favorite is the Vanilla Bean. I put frozen fruit in it & sometimes I add a little yogurt. I also mix it with Silk milk. I can't stand it with water. Everyone's taste is different. I've tried stuff other people liked & I couldn't tolerate it. I also like the chocolate & strawberry Premier Protein shakes.

When a craving strikes ask yourself Am I stressed out? When you're under pressure, your body releases the hormone cortisol, which signals your brain to seek out rewards. Comfort foods loaded with sugar and fat basically "apply the brakes" to the stress system by blunting this hormone. When you reach for food in response to negative feelings such as anger or sadness (like potato chips after a fight with your spouse), you inadvertently create a powerful connection in your brain. Its classic brain conditioning; "The food gets coded in your memory center as a solution to an unpleasant experience or emotion". Stimulate happiness "Women especially have a profound emotional reaction to music". Create upbeat playlists to listen to whenever a craving strikes. The songs provide a distraction and an emotional release. Wait it out "People give in to cravings because they think they'll build in intensity until they become overwhelming, but that's not true," Cravings behave like waves: They build, crest, and then disappear. If you can "surf the urge," you have a better chance of beating it altogether Choose the best distraction "What you're really craving is to feel better," You've heard the trick about phoning a friend or exercising instead of eating. But "taking a solo walk won't help if you're feeling lonely," Instead, identify your current emotion--bored, anxious, or mad; by filling in these blanks: "I feel ____ because of ____." Then find an activity that releases it. If you're stressed, channeling nervous energy into a workout can help; if you're upset over a problem at the office, call a friend and ask for advice. Ask yourself "Have I been eating less than usual If you're eating fewer than 1,000 calories a day or restricting an entire food group (like carbs), you're putting your body in prime craving mode. Even just 3 days of strict dieting decreases levels of the appetite-reducing hormone leptin by 22%. Do This! Lift any bans--safely Plan ways to enjoy your favorite foods in controlled portions. Get a slice of pizza instead of a whole pie, or share a piece of restaurant cheesecake with two friends. Don't "eat around" cravings; trying to squash a craving with a low-cal imitation won't satisfy your brain's memory center. For example, if you're craving a milkshake, yogurt won't cut it--especially if you've been depriving yourself. You may even take in more calories than if you'd just had a reasonable portion of what you wanted in the first place. Munching five crackers, a handful of popcorn, and a bag of pretzels, all in the name of trying to squash a craving for potato chips, will net you about 250 more calories than if you'd eaten a single-serving bag Are you getting enough sleep? In a University of Chicago study, a few sleepless nights were enough to drop levels of the hormone leptin (which signals satiety) by 18% and boost levels of ghrelin, an appetite trigger, by about 30%. Those two changes alone caused appetite to kick into overdrive, and cravings for starchy foods like Cookies, potato chips, and bread jumped 45%. Do This! Have some caffeine; it can help you get through the day without any high-calorie pick-me-ups. It won't solve your bigger issue of chronic sleep loss, but it's a good short-term fix until you get back on track. Portion out a serving, you probably don't have the energy to fight it, so try this trick: Before you dig in, dole out a small amount of the food you want (on a plate) and put the rest away. Are you a creature of habit? You may not realize it, but seemingly innocent routines, such as eating cheese popcorn while watching TV, create powerful associations. "The brain loves routine". The thought of letting go of these patterns can cause a fear response in an area of the brain called the amygdala. "Once the food hits your lips, the fear response shuts off in a heartbeat." Do This! Eliminate sensory cues; smells, sights, and sounds all act as powerful triggers. Watch television in your basement or bedroom so you're far away from the kitchen and the cupboard full of Snacks Picture yourself healthy; try the "stop technique": Every time the food you crave pops into your head, think, Stop! Then, picture a healthy image (say, you're lean and fit). After a while, your brain will dismiss the food image and the craving will subside. "One of my clients did this four or five times a day, and within 2 weeks, she stopped turning to sweets every night after dinner." Shift your focus; Australian researchers found that distracting your brain really does work. When a craving hits, divert your attention to something visual not related to food, like typing an e-mail. Passing up one bag of potato chips and 1 pint of Ben & Jerry's Peanut Butter Cup ice cream per month can help you lose 10 pounds in a year

When you puree in a blender you need to add a liquid or most things will be too dry. Try adding chicken broth to chicken and beef broth to beef. Water, dressings, sauces, soups or gravy to other foods depending on flavors you want. It usually makes more than you can eat so freeze the extra in ice cube trays, pop out cubes when frozen and store in freezer bags. Then thaw or microwave to eat when you want it. (I used to make my own baby food when the kids were little) For a frozen treat this summer, try mixing sf pudding or Greek yogurt with added Protein powder, pour small amounts into Dixie cups, cover with plastic wrap or foil, insert popcicle stick through wrap (it holds stick upright), then freeze. To eat dip in hot water to loosen from cup and... Voila! Enjoy! When your doctor clears you, you can add chopped fruit or whatever. Get creative! You can also just freeze sugar free drinks like crystal light to make the popcicles.

I'm 9 days out of surgery. I just ate 3 ounces of yogurt and then 45 min later pureed some chili and ate that. Am I messing things up? I need someone to talk too.
-
I hated the puréed phase. I felt the same way. Nothing puréed wanted to go or stay down. Turns out, my sleeve hates purée, to this day I can't do it and I'm 1yr out. I ate a lot of yogurt and vegetarian chili that I pulverized with my teeth during the purée stage to get calories in. You're not alone in this.

3d Week Gastric Sleeve Surgery Diet Gah
Felicia replied to reallyrosy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Oh rosy that sucks big time! Do you not get any pain when you feel full? I know I hiccup and burp a lot, and will have bad acid reflux when I am full. I don't think you have to eat plain yogurt do you? I know that I buy carbmaster's from Kroger. When I first started food I was doing the same thing because I was dying for food, period. I mean who wouldn't be after basically starving and drinking fluids for 2 weeks right? I have pushed my sleeve too far many many many many times and although I have not thrown up I have started to learn my lesson. I don't know what to say about feeling hunger, I don't feel hunger at all. Many people will tell you it's acid. I don't have that problem so I dunno. I don't know if I am the best person to lift you up because I too have some wishey washy feelings about my sleeve. I hate it and I love it, but mostly right now I hate it. I feel like maybe I could have gotten some emotional eating help or overeating help before the sleeve and then I would be better off. I always want to eat. I eat a yogurt, and even though I know I am supposed to feel satisfied I am not. Belly is satisfied but my mind is not. This is still very hard for me as far as my mind goes. We get a pizza and I want to eat a few pieces but I can't, I have literally cried because I want to eat more and I can't. I know you have been through hell since getting the sleeve and I hate that for you, I truly do. I hope things get better and you can eat and not have any problems. You have lost of ton of weight though which is so great! Would you say that losing the weight is worth everything you have gone through? I hope so, but maybe not because you have been through a lot. I'm wishing you the best and letting you know I too am going through hell right there with you!
