My Gastric Sleeve Journey
LookingForward22 replied to TRClark23's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Welcome and good luck on your journey. When I started my journey my highest weight was 382. I knew I had to do something, I struggled all my life and it was time to fix it. I started having health complications and worked with my endocrinologist on a plan. I started to work to loose weight on my own, while I explored WLS. I managed to loose 57 pound before I got my sleeve and I’m down 65 lbs since my surgery in Aug 2022 (making my total loss 122 lbs). I get a little frustrated that I’m not loosing faster, but I’m very proud that my weight loss (despite being slower than I’d like) has been steady. Keep up the great work. Remember that everyone’s journey is different, you’ll get there in your own time!! -
I know the feeling of the "ball sitting your throat"! I also get pains every now and then in the middle of my chest (right on my diaphragm, so I think that has to do with my hernia repair, too). I don't and haven't had complications as bad as you, and I'm so sorry you're going through that. You may just have a longer recovery time. Chewing thoroughly is what helped me the most, and taking longer on soft/pureed foods. How are you doing now? I hope your doctors were able to help!

March 23 buddies yet?
GeorgieLynn replied to ceri84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Absolutely, the lower your starting BMI the less pounds you are going to loose. In the end the percentage % should be similar but actual pounds/kilos and speed will all vary greatly. I am going through the same questioning and doubting myself and my approach at 7 was post op. I have been in the hospital 15 days total since surgery (2 readmittance with 5 days stays each time and 5 days at time of sleeve) and am still on IV fluids daily through a PICC line at home. Needless to say I have had a few complications due to a chronic, genetic disease I have which is slowing EVERYTHING down. I have only lost 10lbs according to the scale since surgery but have lost 14 inches. My Dr is not even concerned about my weight loss because how much fluids I am taking and says inches are always more telling than weight due to water retention or dehydration but also muscle gain as fat weighs less than muscle so if you are putting on muscle while loosing fat you could actually show an increase on the scale... don't worry. If you are doing everything you are supposed to and following your program, the weight WILL come off. This is a lifelong marathon not a sprint! 💞 Learn to love yourself by caring for your body. You will be transformed! -
Hey all, I have a small hernia and GERD from sleeve surgery. My insurance is FEP Blue of MD. My doctor submitted a pre cert and FEP Blue said I needed behavioral health and nutrition visits to approve even though it’s a revision due to complications. My doctor then canceled the pre authorization and Re enrolled me to start the whole program over with again. Does this seem right ? I feel like I’ve seen other people have a very seamless process when having a complication based revision. I feel like the insurance and the doctors office is not properly communicating with me or each other. Any advice ?

Hey everyone, I had my sx gastric sleeve 2/20 and I’m almost 10 weeks out. It’s been complications since surgery and I don’t know what else to do neither do the doctors. I have sever pains in my chest and feels like a ball sitting in my throat. I did a second surgery of fixing hiatal hernia and I’m 2 weeks out from this. I been in and out the hospital I can’t eat or keep food down. When I do eat food the pain of twisting and burning the moment food touches my stomach. I throw up a ball of mucus. I can’t even take oral medications and I’m at lost and regret if everything in life after this surgery. Anyone can give me pointers? Anyone been through this? I cry everyday I can’t eat or drink anything besides water. The doctor last told me it’s in my head? Like what kinda comment is that my surgeon doesn’t even respond a doctor in Mexico who is very popular in social media and 2 my friends got their surgeries there but not going through what I’m going through… help 😭

Hey all, I am pre-op for a Gastric Bypass with Heller Myotomy due to Stage 3 Achalasia. I have read some posts about cigar smoking after surgery, but haven't seen many with what procedure I am going to have. That being said, I am not a frequent smoker and I do not smoke cigarettes. I do enjoy an occasional cigar, however my surgeon has stated that there is no way that I can smoke after my surgery. This kind of sucks if I will really have that many complications because of some traditions we have within my workplace as a Paramedic and Firefighter. My question is, has anyone had this procedure and if so, have you had any complications with smoking a cigar post-op. Thanks all.

Hurry Up and Wait!
Misty Marie replied to Misty Marie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After doing research and considering quality of life post-weight loss, I decided I did not want to have to worry about not getting enough nutrients for the rest of my life. Even if I do take vitamins and such, I don't want to have to worry about not having enough absorption if I forget to take them all the time. I also have read of more complications with the RNY and I am not even remotely diabetic, so that surgery seemed more geared for that than just weight loss. My mom had the lap-band and she ended up almost dying from complications years later, so that was out as well. I have to admit that the video appointment I had with my surgeon was demeaning. She definitely came across as someone who was in this for the money (Louis Vuitton bag draped across her desk was a bit much), and looked down on those who couldn't lose weight without surgery. She also admitted that she was new to the practice, having switched specialties recently. That made me question if I really wanted her to be my surgeon as well, but I figured six month more experience, she should be good to go by the time she got around to mine. -
I talked to my Mayo Clinic surgeon. I will have a two weeks liquid diet prior to the surgery, it is a simple diet combination each day of 4 premade protein shakes (they have a list of 4 but doing some research I found that the Premier Protein from Costco are the most affordable ones), 16 ounces of regular orange juice and 32 ounces of water mixed with electrolyte mixes (Nuun or IV Hydration). After finishing those each day I can have broth or bouillon or non carbonated beverages. He also recommended a low carb diet until then. The surgeon also mentioned that I should be near the hospital after the release for some days since it seems that the majority of complication arise in the first two weeks and I live several hours away. These days I find myself craving things that I never crave. I read somewhere that they are called “food funerals”. And here I go toward another food funeral. Tonight is cantaloupe.😀

Complications 11 yrs after surgery
froufrou replied to Mia2515's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Is your gastroenterologist and bariatric surgeon talking? They need to communicate. As someone who has had a LOT of post surgery complications, I do sympathise a lot. Hang in there, but get these people to talk to each other and get them to come up with some answers. -
New to the group Vsg to bypass
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to kweenSash's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi everyone!!! I just got cleared (due to a lot of sleeve complications) to have my revision to bypass. I have GERD, gastritis, esophagitis and a TON of polyps I've had to have removed (a surgery every month since January, last one was yesterday) because of the high PPI I've had to take long term due to the GERD. A little nervous about complications, stricture, food getting stuck, etc... How has it been for all of you that had revisions? -
Thanks Arabesque and all .The NHS won't do an infusion .My doctor explained that unless I am severely anaemic they wouldn't even consider it .I found it complicated but she said I have small red blood cells .I do need to carry on taking a ton of iron but they aren't retesting until the end of May . I feel wiped out most days and sleep a lot .I told the doctor this and she said nothing .I have told this to the dietitian but have heard nothing back , even though she offered to get my bloods done .So it goes on . I have a question - do you guys have your dietitians number ? Mine is all done by e mail and you wait ages for a reply .It says in the bumph "you will have access to a dietitian " - this means an e mail address in my case .Anyone else ? thanks

Hey ya'll...been a minute!!!
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks so much, everyone!! I'm just keeping my fingers, toes, and eyes crossed that I can get to the end of all this, get my revision, and go about living my life again. Every time I come out of a surgery, the surgeon tells me he found more stuff to remove. Last time I told him "No more looking around in there. Just get in, remove what's there, and get out" He laughed. I was serious. As expected, my weight loss has kind of stopped due to the weird dietary issues and not being able to do the kind of work outs my body is used to. But I'm not gaining, so I'm ok with it. I know in my heart that I'll lose the rest of my weight after my revision. Can't wait to finally feel better and get back to normal. And still, even with all this, I don't regret my sleeve. I hate that I had complications, but I know I never would have gotten to where I am now weight and health wise if I hadn't had the surgery. -
Any April Surgery Dates?
BabySpoons replied to rokse23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My gastric bypass was performed on Tues. April 4th. The procedure lasted 4 hrs since the doc was repairing a hiatal hernia at the same time. I was 2 hrs. in recovery so my fam was starting to get worried by 6PM despite the hourly updates. No complications. Pain was minimal. No nausea, vomiting or gas pain. Dry mouth from hell. Sipped water day 1. Walked a lap and up another time to use bathroom. Surprised they didn't walk me more. b4 going home. Day 2 . Tolerated meals well. Tried a little of everything they brought me. Discharged me that afternoon. Felt more pain at home. Mostly pulling on incisions as I bent over, stood or tried turning over in bed. Sipping on prescribed Hydrocod helps for pain. Walking on my treadmill every couple hrs for 5 minutes to prevent clots. Drinking my protein drinks and water for now till appetite returns. Not weighing till after inflammation goes down. Overall...so far so good. Pain lessens each day. Praying for a speedy recovery for all of you this month!!! -
Sleeve revision to MGB
Smanky replied to newlifecoming's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
First off: the rate of weight loss isn't dependent on the type of surgery. Folks who've had a MGB/Omega Loop on here have lost quickly, and I was one who lost slowly. It's the same for all surgeries. Rate of loss depends on other factors, and honestly it's fine if it's slow. I still hit goal and am now below, so the end results is what matters. I don't know where the MGB gives minimal loss comes from? I've lost 100% of my excess weight, and by kilograms, I'm half my original size. I absolutely don't regret opting for the MGB over the Sleeve. Took about fourteen months to reach goal, at a pretty steady clip. I was someone who stalled frequently, so it took patience and staying off the scale for a lot of it. But again - this is just me. No real complications beyond a tendency to develop ulcers, but I had raging GERD pre-surgery, and have a bile pool in the bottom of my new stomach, so there's specific me-related stuff going on that isn't necessarily to do with the surgery. I have issues with digestion and my liver misbehaving that pre-date my surgery. No dumping. I do get mild foamies, but they're a minor inconvenience versus proper full-tilt foamies others get. The restriction is excellent, and my labs are all consistently good so my supplement intake is working. I absolutely think it's worth it and couldn't be happier with my choice. -
Hi- I had a gastric sleeve in 2014 and lost 80 lbs. I have since gained back 90lbs. I’m scheduled for a revision to MGB on April 20th. I’m seeing from posts here that weight loss is minimal or at least slower with that. Just wondering how much you’ve lost, the timing of it and if you had any complications. Any feedback at all I would appreciate it. I’m getting a little nervous about it as it gets closer and just want to make sure it’s worth. Thanks

Two Year Surgery Anniversary - Continued Success!
Blueslily posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hello All, I am so excited today. This is my 2-year anniversary. I met with my surgeon today for my 2 year follow up and I do not have any issues or medical complications. I started the journey at 235 lb. Today I am holding steady in the 140s. Yes, almost 100 lbs. I do not have any complications. I am still adhering to my program. I am not food deprived in any way. I feel really blessed. I came to this site when I was doing research and when I started the journey. I stopped being a regular here maybe about a year post surgery. I just wanted to share to people who are starting the journey or are early on in the process, be careful because sometimes there's negativity here or sometimes there are some scary stories about scary outcomes. Each person has their own unique journey. I feel really blessed that I did not have any complications and that it was not really hard to adhere to my program. I will be honest, when I first got home from the hospital, there was quite an adjustment. But most of those adjustments are due to your body going through the healing process. So the challenges that you experience right when you get home are not the same as you go through the process. I also want to share with newcomers that you really want to do your emotional work before you start this commitment and you want to be really clear and honest with yourself that your motivation is healthy and that you're doing this for the right reasons. If you need to work on yourself emotionally, this surgery is not going to do that work for you. All the best to everyone going through the process. Don't have any shame about choosing this option. There's still only a couple people in my life that know, and I'm totally fine with that. I don't have any shame about it, it's just that I'm sure some people won't understand the choice. That's okay because they don't have to. I made this choice because I wanted to be healthy. And today, on my two year anniversary, I am healthy! Take care of yourselves everyone. Success is possible. It just requires that you do your part in the work. -
The first month I lost 30 pounds. Then I hit a stall. Now at 11 months out, I lose around 8-10 pounds per month. But I have more shape and definition in my body, a lot of excess skin, I'm way healthier and stronger, and as long as I don't gain, I'm happy. I've had some complications and I need to have a revision to the bypass, so I assume I'll lose the rest of my weight then. I just do what I can now. But it's normal to hit stalls and slow down losing weight.

Meal delivery service?
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Jillian K8's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
1 Factor meal usually feeds me for lunch and dinner. So a 1 week box really goes far. I work full time, I'm in college full time, and I have a lot of medical crap going on due to complications from my sleeve. In and out of surgeries before I can be cleared for my revision. So for me and what I have going on right now, the Factor 75 meals are perfect. -
How awful! I hope you're surrounded by friends and family to give you the support and strength to get through this! I also hope that you successfully meet your weight loss goals and are grateful you had the surgery, regretting your choice of surgeon instead. Sounds like what happened to you isn't a complication of the surgery, it's malpractice of the surgeon. I hope your next procedure goes well and you have a quick recovery.

ESG experience from hell
hills&valleys replied to Mrs Roz's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am so sorry you are having such horrendous complications from your ESG. Thankfully, you listened to your body and reacted quickly! I hope you are now on track for a speedy recovery. If negligence is confirmed, please share the name of your surgeon and the bariatric practice/facility with the group as forewarning. Sending healing prayers to you. -

Complications 11 yrs after surgery
Mia2515 replied to Mia2515's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thank you for that information. I'm having nonstop stomach discomfort. Gastroenterologist prescribed me dicyclomine for stomach pain it helps a bit, not a lot. My last endoscopy he did he was confused to as why everything inside of me wasn't were it was supposed to be. My stomach has moved to the other side. I was very confused by this. I'm pretty sure that's because of the gastric bypass right?? I just don't know anymore but I can't handle these post complications with this surgery at all. It's running my life -
Feeling frustrated and demoralized
mcipanda replied to Yahoo's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
If I did the math right, you went into surgery weighing 190. I’m not sure what your expectations are regarding the speed of weight loss after surgery, but it’s safe to say they might be a bit unrealistic. Your anatomy was just rearranged, your body is in shock trying to heal and all of this is happening while taking in very few calories. The hospital will pump you full of fluids that can take a days to release, plus you’re inflamed and probably haven’t had a decent bowel movement yet if it’s only been three days. Take a step back, breathe and remember that surgery isn’t a switch that turns on fat release. It’s much more complicated than that. This entire process is life altering, so take it one day at a time and read up on the posts provided by @GreenTealael. It’s gonna be okay! You WILL lose the weight because it sounds like you’re following the program. Just give your mind and body more time. 🧬 -
Complications 11 yrs after surgery
Lawman replied to Mia2515's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am 11 years out of Bypass surgery as well. And yes I have had many complications and struggles as well. My mind set going in was I would do exactly what my surgeon told me to the T. No if and are buts. I guess me being a retired Military Guy we tend to do those things. Well my 1st 8 months went perfect. I went from over 300lbs to 190. Feeling like a million bucks. Woke up one day with intense paid in my abdomen and off to the ER. Internal Hernia. My intestines poked thought the sac that holds them. Well 2 months later another. Im still losing weight following directions. Another 5 months had another repaired. Well in 2016 all heck breaks loose and I think here we go again. But this time it was way worse. All of our intestines ect float around in internal fat ect. Well when you lose a lot of weight you lose that as well. I was down to around 168 lbs in the best shape of my life but my intestines/colon had gotten twisted this time in a bad way. So by the grace of god the surgeon on call that night had seen this before with people that had weight loss surgery done laparoscopically. He went in and took 2 feet of my colon and was able to save them and re-attached. He basically said when a surgeon can get his hand on things and tighten them back up like they should be he see these things. He advice was to put weight on and get the internal fat back in so my intestines could float as they are supposed to. And he was right. I was so focused on hitting my goal and finishing 1st I guess I didnt understand or wasent told body physiology. I am back up to around 225 and all of my problems for the most part have gone away except post-op depression still after 11 years. I was fortunate he was on call that night and we have become friends and he had educated me so much from a surgeons point of view that corrects these things. He is a bariatric surgeon but fixes the problems associated with it as well. I hope that gives you a little incite that yes problems happen. You cant go back in time but if I could I would still have had the surgery but wouldnt have done it laparoscopically and let them cut me . But Im here and healthy and living life and try not to dwell on it. I hope this helps you even if for 5 minutes reading my story. -
My wife is coming up on 18 years out on her DS, but can't offer any real advice on the preop diet as we didn't have one. The best general advice on the shakes is to try several ahead of time (some manufacturers/retailers have sample packs of different varieties that you can get to try). Try both the RTD (ready to drink) and mixes as suits your needs, but there is more variety in the mixes. Generally, 100% whey isolate is preferred to the cheaper whey blends or concentrates as it is better absorbed (and also more expensive...) and is also better tolerated by those who are or develop lactose intolerance as the lactose is filtered out in the processing. But if a blend or concentrate fits your tastes better, one that you will drink is preferred over one that just sits on your shelf. An additional option is unflavored powder (though there is no such thing as one without taste...) and flavor it with one of the sugar free flavor syrups that are available. Also, when just to complicate things further, when/if you hit on one that you like, don't load up on too much of it, as your tastes may change post op (or they may not...) Good luck in getting through this - lots of changes in these next few weeks pre and post op, but things settle out over time.
