  1. Some people undergo WLS and lose significant weight only to gain some or all of it back years later. I asked my nutricianist "Why". Her response was grazing. Grazing is to eat small portions of food, as appetizers or the like, in place of a full-sized meal or to snack during the course of the day in place of regular meals. A recent study by University of California, Berkeley, may have found a correlation between sleep and body mass index (BMI). Breakfast and breakfast skipping is associated with weight gain.” This study seems to go hand-in-hand with another study. Another recent study found that reducing the eating window (the hours per day that one eats) reduces weight. http://acsh.org/2015/09/picture-this-a-food-app-that-could-improve-public-health/ The results from this study published in Cell Metabolism showed that the majority eat over a 15-hour period each day. Some research suggests that limiting the “eating window” to 10-12 hours per day may contribute to weight loss. Their sample size was small, but of their volunteers interested in weight loss researchers set the smart phone app to help them restrict food intake to a 10-hour window. Without changing the types of food they were eating over 13 weeks, this volunteer group lost an average of 3.5 percent of their initial weight per person. So it appears that to maintain the weight loss after you reach the Maintenance stage, one needs to control "Grazing". This includes limiting your "eating window" to around 10-12 hours per day and getting the nominal 7-9 hours of sleep each night.
  2. I'm so nervous I gained 2 pounds in between my 2 required NUT appointments. I was also on 2 steroids for bronchitis surfing this time. The NUT said it could be from that, but I am extremely nervous that my insurance will now deny due to the gain. Ugh. Anyone else have this happen? Wht was your outcome? I have BCBS of SC.
  3. I'm still pre op. I don't have my surgery until December. However I quit smoking in June because first I was tired of smoking and two I heard it wasn't good to smoke if I'm gonna have surgery. I have gained ten pounds during my 6 month diet documentation per my insurance. My doctor hadn't said anything and my insurance didn't say I had to lose weight before surgery. But maaaannnn I swear I didn't want to gain during this time.
  4. So I am about 5 weeks pre-op. How many of you gained weight before going on the liquid diet? I don't feel that I am going nuts but it is SOOOO easy for me to gain that just by relaxing and eating the things I normally wouldn't, I have started gaining :-( I am perpetually on a limited eating plan / diet to try and lose weight (which obviously doesn't work) and now am eating things I typically wouldn't like bread, milk, Cereal etc. Anyway, I don't want to jeopardize the surgery but I will do the two week liquid diet, just wondering how many of you gained once you had made the decision to do the surgery?
  5. I had my rny in 2011 and went from all time high of 412 lbs to 245. I had kept it off until last year, when I started to put it back on. I have gained back about 35lbs. I am having trouble getting back on track and getting my weight off. I gave a few other medical conditions that could be playing a part but honestly, it is mostly me. Can anyone offer some advice to help me get back on track and get some weight off
  6. I'm 2 years out and initially lost over 110 lbs. I more than passed the expectation of my surgery team. Over the past six months I have gained back more than 15 lbs. My surgeon is okay with my weight gain because I'm still within my expected range, but I am not. He also said that they do expect some weight gain about 2 years out as your body adjusts to its new size. What I also learned from my team is that you need far less calories post surgery than a normal person. Because you have essentially flushed your system out, your heart, lungs, muscles need much less energy just to work normally. They compareded it to a car needing less fuel after a tune up. So translate fuel or energy to calories. Much less calories are now needed and that as time goes on and my body continues to adjust, I may continue to drop in the amount of calories I can tolerate. So it appears that I need to limit my daily caloric intake to approx. 1500 calories to simply not gain. Even though I'm active, running, walk, kayak, ski etc on a regular basis. Doesn't seem to matter. In fact it was suggested that I might not be able to tolerate 1500, that as time goes on I may need to reduce my caloric intake even more. I still find I need 5 smaller meals a day. Do the math, that means 250-300 calories a meal. I know I've been eating more than that. So I struggling with accepting that if I want to keep the weight off, I need to live on a highly restricted calorie diet, which basically severely limits my intake of sugar, alcohol, carbohydrates, meat and fats. I lost the weight on low fat cottage cheese, greek yogurt, salads with vinegar or yogurt dressing, fish, Beans and low-fat cheese as my primary nurishment. I am realizing that I need to follow that diet for life and it is challenging, particularly when it comes to social events and dining out. I am praying for fortitude and solice to accept this as a permanent lifestyle change and would greatly appreciate hearing your stories and knowing that I am not alone.
  7. Has anyone had issues with weight gain during the 90 day nutrition and getting denied? My weight has been crazy with going back and forth and I have my final visit weigh in tomorrow and know I'm 3-4lbs higher than my previous weight. Of course I had thought my previous weigh in was my final one so I didn't follow my eating plan as closely as I should have since birthday and all going on.
  8. Hi everyone, I am 6 months out and have lost 57 lbs so far. (229 to 172) I have been on the mini pill for about 18 months, and it was great my periods had stopped completely. But now they have come back with a vengeance ... So I was looking at other options like the implant or injection... The only thing is I have read a side effect is weight gain. Had anyone any experience of this? I'm after a contraception with stops my period and hopefully doesn't make me pike on the pounds :-(
  9. Out of the blue I looked up Star Jones to see how she was doing, since her successful gastric bypass. First news headline I see " Disaster after weight loss surgery" picture of Star from every angle wearing a white one piece bathing suit. I guess she had gained back 80 lbs and many articles ridiculed her for her weight gain. Now, I am not a fan nor hater... I just wanted to see how WLS can be maintained. I am 80% committed to having the gastric sleeve and my worst nightmare is gaining the weight back few years down the road and for people to make snarky comments. I feel bad for Star since she was so successful with her procedure and I am not completely sure why the restriction is eliminated with WLS after couple of years. Anybody else share the same fear?
  10. I see my surgeon team today for a follow-up. Last month was my initial visit with his team and I have about 1 more month of nutritional follow ups with my PCP before it can all be submitted to insurance. I quit smoking 3 wks ago (after smoking for about 10 yrs). It wasn't hard when they told me I had to for the surgery. Believe it or not, I am very motivated! But now I've gained about 15lbs in 3 wks ????. I'm nervous about seeing the surgeon team today because they told me in my initial visit not to gain any weight. I was told to lose 10-15lbs before surgery. I still have 2-3 months before I go under. Did anyone else gain during the 6 month diet stage? I am busting my rear to lose that and the 10-15lbs before I go down but I'm freaking out a bit about today's weigh in! ????
  11. You know I never really thought about it. But I am on ALOT of meds that can cause weight gain. Prozac Depo shot Steroids and steroid shots Tizanidine An OAB medication that causes Fluid retention sometimes. And I'm sure there's more. I take 15 prescriptions all together. What happens after my surgery? Should I switch medications? I definitely want to switch out Depo I started the shot in March and have gained 40lbs on top of my steroids. Thoughts? Weight gain

I have my last nut apt Wed and then my stuff will be submitted to insurance. My bmi was 40.1 so they told me not to loose any weight. I weighed myself this morning and I am 3 lbs heavier. Should I reschedule my apt until I drop those pounds? I dont want to be denyed. The surgery cord did not say not to gain, just not to loose but I have read here that some people have been denyed for a gain.
  13. I had gastric bypass on march 2013 I gained weight back how can I lose it again?

  15. I am 52 days post op and generally have not been weighing myself daily, but started weighing myself every couple of days. I am up two pounds. I have been exercising in the pool daily for up to an hour, have been meeting my Protein requirements and fluids. This is so frustrating!

  18. I've gained 9 pounds since my 1st visit back in March. Has anyone gained weight during the preop phase???
  19. Anyone else? I did the 3 months of monitored weight loss. I had to lose 6 lbs over the 3 months, I lost 9. Saw the Dr mid July. Took her 2 weeks to get my referral. I see the surgeon next week. I have gained 3 to 4 lbs. There are so many factors as to why but I don't like excuses so I won't even get into them. Has anyone else had this happen and how did the surgeon address it? I plan on busting my butt this week to get them off again, I just wanna be prepared in case 1 or 2 linger. I always thought 6 lbs wouldn't be a big deal, but it was...
  20. Hello I just recently created an account in hopes of receiving some help and advice from gastric sleeve patients (It took me a lot of courage to decide to do this though). I hope I am asking in the right place though hehe. Anyways, I have had my vsg on August 4th 2014 at the age of 17 and so far I am over 80 pounds down! My sw was 220lbs and I am hoping to be near 102-110 pounds (I am only 4 foot 10). I have a few questions so bear with me please I have had my vsg in a different country than in the one I currently live in so I do not have anyone to kinda follow up with. I was also given a nutrition plan for the first 6 months only(although it was quite vague). Right now, I am currently struggling with a lot of grazing. I have never been the one to actually eat a proper meal before my surgery and I grazed instead, but right now I am grazing non stop through the day especially on sweet things. Sadly, this has resulted in me in stalling for a few months and then putting on 2 pounds and i decided to seek advice before I gain more. Also, my family eats completely different things than I do, so I am literally left on my own to figure it out and it is hard to cook and such since I was busy with my last year of high school and I will be starting university soon. I looked up online and a lot of surgeons or nutritionists say no snacking while others encourage it. I believe that maybe having 1-2 planned Snacks would help since I am awake for a long period of time and if I try only sticking to 3 meals I feel like gnawing my own arm hehe I am sticking to Protein but sometimes I am just overwhelmed or bored because I keep eating the same things everyday (I do love chicken though!). I was hoping if someone could share their food choices/meal plans with me if possible or maybe easy things I can cook for myself? Lastly, I was hoping if there are other people who have lost weight everywhere except for their belly. I have lost weight in my whole body and a bit in my belly, but it seems to be the only place where there is stubborn fat (I am apple shaped) and my belly is just hanging and nothing seems to help.( I am guessing that's why I am a bit carb sensitive and I need to completely cut carbs out if i want to lose weight.) Thank you very much in advance and hoping to meet other people as well
  21. Did you gained weight during your 6 months visit? If so did you still get approve ? I have amerigroup they don't require me to lose but I'm afraid I gained last months I was on my period, and I gained this month :/ and on my period too

    Weight Gain

I was sleeved 2/18/14. My starting weight was around 300, Day of surgery 278 and I dropped down to 198. However, I have been taking care of my dad and working a lot lately and have completely falling off but I don't know how. My weight has jumped to near 230 since February. I'm sooooo depressed. I need help bad.
  24. I had my sleeve done 07/07/2015. I am 9 lbs heavier today, 07/08/2015, than when I was weighed immediately b4 surgery...... is this normal?!??!
  25. Hi all, I'm a newbie... to the forum, not the situation. I had my surgery early 1996, dropped about 75 lbs initially, rebounded back about +10 lbs, and stayed there for about 12 years. Then all hell broke loose. I had an eye infection that sequestered me to a blackened room, in extreme pain for nearly a month... That's when my metabolism ceased to exsist it seems. I was in bed, not moving, so not burning calories, not burning calories, so had no energy or appetite, no appetite so not consuming any calories for energy ... etc etc, you get the picture. Since then, I have been steadily gaining weight (and also crested the dreaded 40 year-old mark). I've put on about 40 pounds and can't seem to shake it. I'm really not sure I know how to be honest. My surgery dropped the weight 'for me' I guess. I eat very little (my kids even mention it), and still hang on to the weight. I feel like the surgery hyjacked my metabolism to begin with... like my body adjusted to surviving on its surgery-given food allotment... then with the illness and age on top of it, it feels hopeless. Any suggestions?
