the slow down in weight loss is the infamous "three week stall" (it's not always during week 3, but rest assured that almost all of us experience our first stall sometime during the first month after surgery. I had mine during weeks 2 and 3. Once my weight loss started up again during week 4, I dropped like 6-8 lbs practically overnight....) the starving part is sometimes due to dehydration or stomach acid. Are you getting enough to drink? Do they have you on an antacid? Many of us are prescribed something like omeprazole for the first 3-6 months after surgery.

Not losing anything? ?
McButterpants replied to tnf0920's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Search three week stall and you'll find out very quickly, you're not alone. Keep in mind - you're still recovering from major surgery...you removed most of a major organ. You're consuming MUCH less food than you did a few weeks ago. You're moving your body. So your body is like, "what the heck is going on? What are you doing to me?" Be kind to your body - you've put it thru a lot. It's going to continue to recover and realize that things are OK and let loose of some weight. Be patient!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
I am in the same boat...three week stall....I have lost 36 pounds all togher and 23lbs since surgery! I am still not comfortable eating tuna, chicken, or any meats yet but doing well on chicken salad, tuna salad, and beans. Egg salad sounds good, will have to try that as well. I have not been able to get all of my protein in so I ordered some liquid protein since i have trouble with trying to eat and get enough in. Good luck!

How much weight did you lose during your first month post-op?
Fluffnomore replied to gemgirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Whoa! Way too early to give up. Almost everyone has a stall right around the time you are talking about. If you google it, there are dozens of references. "Three week stall." Also poster Butterthebean has an article in his signature on this very subject. As far as giving up, have you ever lost 17 pounds in a week or so? Keep doing what you are doing and DON'T GIVE UP. -
feb 2013 sleevers weigh in
hvsg replied to kathyhalls's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think this is the dreaded three week stall. I just try to remember that my body need this time to adjust, it helps me not to fixate on the scale. Trying to up my water, and I walk 40-60 mins a day. So far I had to loose 10lbs. pre-op, lost 15 on liquid pre-op, and 19 since surgery on 2/24. The scale has been stalled for a while now, but I have never lost 44lbs this quickly. -
Hey peeps ,I’m curious and wondering about the whole process on how this also changes our metabolism has anyone studied tht ? Like I heard tht this sleeve also does metabolic changes in our bodies as well? So far so good I haven’t had a stall other then the three week stall, but I’m finding tht I still can only eat about five bites and I’m done and I guess this is what I’m supposed to be eating because I’m losing weight but since I have started eating I’m not getting near my water intake so stay thirsty ,and also I have never been a tea drinker and now I crave it I dk if it is cause I’m tired of water or if it is the caffeine ( I was a six pack of diet cokes or Pepsi before ) and I’m craving tacos like no other but I found tht I can do a taco salad and satisfy tht ,what are some of ur cravings and what do u try and eat instead ?

PhilyNurse replied to DivaNurse's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have definitely been in a three week stall before. In June I tried to increase the intensity of my workouts and redesign my diet. It's been helping. -

I've been on a three week stall. It's weird because it started right when I started seriously working out and not just walking. I am going to track my food this week and keep working out. I am sure it will eventually break. -
I was 304 day of surgery, 7/10/13. Today I am 270. I experienced the three week stall too. I hadn't lost any weight for nearly a week. I just started losing again yesterday.

February 2019 weight loss buds
Greenstar replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
dont look at the scale every day, its really bad and can be discouraging. i learned this when i got my three week stall. i know i average about 1.5 pounds loss a day now. calories are nothing to worry about if you follow what you are supposed to eat. 3 oz worth of protein 4 times a day so i can meet the 60 grams of protein. main diet is skinless and boneless chicken breast, low fat lean ground turkey, and low sodium beans. -
CALLING ALL JULY 2016 SLEEVERS
MissB1982 replied to Tresa Embil's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hitting the beginning of week 3/ending week 2. I am on pureed now and it felt like heaven to have some real Food no matter how disgusting it looks. I had had it with cream soups and protein shakes, it just made me nauseous. I really struggle to get in that one protein shake and I try to get the rest of my protein in with food. I'm eating maybe 1/4 cup sometimes to 1/2 cup sometimes at a time. I eat slowly, but I definitely feel like I feel hungry at times. Maybe it's head hunger. I eat three times a day but I read in the beginning you should eat four to six meals a day because you're only getting in 1/4 to 1/2 a cup each time but I'm not there yet . I'm probably going to hit the three week stall soon so I'm not even going to get on the scale, it's no big deal to me. I know I'm losing by my clothes. They are hanging off of me. Last I weighed I was 248 about a fifteen pound loss from surgery date. Getting in 60+ protein most days and close to 50 ounces of water. I didn't get any rest after surgery. I'm a single mother and I had no help so immediately I was cleaning and cooking. I wish I could have rested but I must say I think it sped up my recovery and kept me active because my energy is pretty good now and I rarely have dizzy spells except sometimes at night which could be low sugar, low pressure, or hot bouts. Immediately after surgery I was hit with hot flashes and bad night sweats so I keep water and g2 by my bed at night. It's hard but no regrets! -

I've got a notoriously unreliable cycle (think "on 3 weeks, off 1 week, on 1 week, off 7 weeks, on 2 weeks, off one OH JUST KIDDING on five weeks..."), but it's been calming the hell down over the past few years. According to the app that desperately tries to keep up, I should've started two days ago. And yet... here we are. And I'm usually not one to scale-watch, but two pounds up after a three-week stall just feels mean. Cranky! Bored! God, I'm in quite the mood, aren't I? -
Congratulations, you are doing fantastic! If you haven't already checked them out there are two recent topics in this forum that are really helpful in putting weight loss into perspective; one is "You may be more successful than you think" posted by gamergirl and other has to do with what they call the three week stall. I am 3 weeks out and had that moment today (Thursday has been designated my "official" weekly weigh-in ) where the scale went down by just one pound not the 7, 8 or 9 pounds I have gotten used to. I have found the two referenced topics to really have helped me not have the old "I hate my body" moment I would have had a little over a month ago.

Vsg & Hiatal Hernia Repair
emily_0192010 replied to pamr's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello I'm glad to hear you are doing well!! I also had a hiatal hernia repaired during my operation and didn't find out until my follow-up visit! I'm not sure if it made my recovery harder or not. Apparently it is very, very common! I also agree that wearing something tight actually helps in some ways. Once my incisions weren't sore themselves (just general soreness) I wore a spanx-like thing all the time. I still wear it! Immediately after surgery I wore one that was technically a size or two too big, that way it held me in but didn't add pressure. Good luck on not stepping on the scale! It is very tempting at first! Also, be prepared just in case you hit the "three week stall". Totally normal, but it can still hurt to see it. If you do hit it, just remember "Water, Protein, vitamin" and try not to dwell on the number! -
Stalled for 2 weeks!
Bufflehead replied to jessicashae33's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
the only thing you did wrong is to not learn about the three week stall and how normal it is BEFORE having surgery. Use the search box here and look for "three week stall" "third week stall" or something like that. Or you can even Google "three week stall vsg" and you'll learn all about it. Stop stressing, keep following your plan, and stay off the scale for a while. Everything will be fine. -
I was the seventh and just about to post this exact same thing - I had lost 14 pounds at two weeks post op ( I started at 223 so the slower loss is expected ) and haven't lost a single pound from week two to week three. I've heard of the three week stall but I too was so used to watching the scale go down - I'm still on purée and was on liquids for two weeks- all I've had so far in the purée stage is cream of chicken and mashed potatoes one time and an egg one time ( I couldn't even finish half the egg) so I haven't "cheated" per say - this sure is annoying to say the least- I was hopeful to see a one on the scale for the new year and at this rate I'll be lucky to even loose a pound :/ Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Ugh....weight loss stopped
Threetimesacharm replied to gigi2195's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too had the three week stall and now again I have been in a stall for 11 days. I am going to be 16 weeks out tomorrow. It is very frustrating I know but we need to hang in there and know that the weight loss will continue. -
You will likely soon hit the "three week stall" (do a search for it here) where your loss will slow or stop and possibly even increase a bit. This is entirely normal and totally unrelated to what food phase you are in (people who are still on liquids as well as those who have been on soft foods since the start go through it.) It has to do with the matter that initially you are losing a big chunk of water weight associated with your glycogen stores (basically stored carbohydrate) being depleted due to your low calorie intake. Once that is depleted, your body shifts gears to burn your stored fat, which burns more slowly, so the weight loss slows a bit, too. Entirely normal. In our program they specifically tell us that their patients tend to do better as they move into real food - not strictly from a loss rate perspective, but for the sake of feeling better and more energetic, which leads to being more active and helping to maintain a more sustainable loss over the long haul. I was starting to nibble at the gym again after a couple of weeks, not for the sake of boosting loss rate (it didn't need it...) but for maintaining the habit (and not allowing my wife to use me as an excuse for not going!) I was certainly not burning any more calories there than at home, but more just starting to get a bit more variety in activities.

look up the "three week stall". Almost everyone gets that. Yours just arrived a little ahead of schedule. Stick to your plan and it will break.

I am a little over 4 months post op and my nutritionist said that I should be eating 1200 calories a day. I actually was not eating enough and found when I upped to 1200 a day I started losing again. She said that our bodies are really not intended to function long term on the lower calories. If you had a three week stall, I would strongly consider taking a couple of weeks and trying to experiment with your calories and find a level of calories that your body likes. Mine likes to get around 1200-1400 and I lose about 0.8 every day that I hit that target, of course if I go over, then it doesn't but if I have a really low day in the 800 range, I also gain. I know that this is not what a lot will say, but I find that it works well for me and I wanted my lifestyle to be something i could maintain forever and I know that I could never last long term eating 800 calories a day. I intend to eat 1200-1400 per day for the rest of my life with the occasional day that will go over that.

Ok Question About Calories
OilSooner replied to crazycatlady8's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Honestly, I eat about 1500 calories per day, and am at 3 weeks two days. I try to eat all healthy foods, but have had a piece of chocolate or two. I am down nearly 30 lbs since surgery, and have yet to hit the three weeks stall. I cant imagine the people who eat only 5-600 calories per day, and I'm sure they are staggered that I eat 1500. Its a crazy world, and we are all different! -
Ugh! Upped My Calories and Gained! Help!
FreeToBeMe posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am about three weeks out and on the mushie stage with two protein shakes a day and one mushie. I was doing about 300 calories a day and felt light-headed and weak so I upped it to around 600. The problem is that my weight loss slowed and this morning I showed a gain of .2 lb. Is this the dreaded three week stall or I am messing up? My fat intake was a kind of high yesterday and I didn't exercise. Advice is really appreciated. TIA, Pennie -
yes. Happens to almost everyone. Search this site for threads on the "three week stall". EDIT: oh wait - so this stall has been going on for over a month? That's unusually long. The three-week stall usually lasts a week or two. Are you weighing and measuring what you're eating? Are you sticking to your plan?
-
I can't speak to the estrogen, but I can tell you that almost everyone experiences a stall at about the 3 week mark. Search "three week stall" on this forum or in google and you'll find tons about it. My advice is to stay off of the scale for the first month. Your body is desperately trying to begin the healing process and that takes priority for it over losing weight. Your job is to meet your protein and water goals everyday and stick to your plan regarding your food stages. If you do everything you are supposed to do, the weight will start to come off eventually. Good luck!
