What do you wish you had done BEFORE your gastric bypass surgery to get ready?
Bypass2Freedom replied to DianeF's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
They are yummy! I also am scared of losing hair, but from what I gather there isn't much we can do about preventing it - but it'll only be temporary if it does happen I just take the gummies to make my hair in a better condition as it is now! Definitely! I think some vitamins like B12 & D, the absorption is actually quite poor in tablet form, so the sprays help with that! Oh bless her I know that can happen with some people! So I paid privately in the UK, and it is a 2 year package of aftercare that includes: 1 week post-op appointment with a bariatric nurse 4 week post-op appointment with a bariatric nurse 8 week post-op appointment with a bariatric nurse 12 week post-op appointment with a bariatric nurse nutritional screen blood test 10 days before 6 month appointment 6 month post-op appointment with a dietician 9 month post-op appointment with a bariatric nurse 12 month post-op appointment with a dietician and a follow-up with the psychotherapist 15 month post-op appointment with a bariatric nurse 18 month post-op appointment with a bariatric nurse 21 month post-op appointment with a bariatric nurse 24 month post-op appointment with a bariatric nurse -

I have an appointment already this week. My body composition is done via bodpod at my bariatric clinic. So the accuracy is pretty spot on. At 12%, it's very concerning. -

Liver Function Tests and Bariatric Surgery
catwoman7 replied to MrsFitz's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
high liver enzyme levels aren't uncommon the first year or so after weight loss surgery. Rapid weight loss is really hard on livers. Mine were high for about the first year, and I've heard this several times from others as well (including people from here on Bariatric Pal). My regular doctor was really alarmed by it, but the people at my bariatric clinic knew what was going on. They went back down to normal and have been normal ever since. -

New to the forum
BlondePatriotInCDA replied to Gypsy_Life's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Welcome! I had my RNY last August (2023) and continue the journey. People on here don't give medical advice, they do offer suggestions or insight/experiences they've themselves have gone through. So no worries, no one will ask you to give medical advice. I personally have noticed I get more in-depth knowledge here than my bariatric surgeon or the bariatric clinic, probably because here people have gone through it and understand and are less likely to chalk it up to "women" or "obese people" complaining or imagining things or...its something other than the bariatric surgery causing ______________ (fill in the blank). We've all experienced some of the same things and some unique signs and symptoms. We all know surgery outcomes and side effects can be unique to each patient. Welcome to the forums! -

bariatric vitamins and calcium chews: where to purchase?
Longview Lady posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
HI All! I'm on day 3 of liquid diet and surgery is set for 11/30/23. I'll be taking off all of December from work as that is what doctor suggested for recovery time. My job is physically and mentally demanding. So, where did you/everyone get their bariatric Vitamins and calcium chews? My doctor recommended chewables for first 3 months, and honestly, I'm not a pill person anyway, if I can avoid it. Trying to watch my pennies, aren't we all, so thought I'd ask and hope for some good recommendations. The Kaiser Program I am going through recommends a couple different Vitamin brands to choose from: Bariatric Advantage and Celebrate. Still, would like to hear the vitamins you are using even if not the brands I mentioned. Thanks for your feedback in advance. -
Liver Function Tests and Bariatric Surgery
catwoman7 replied to MrsFitz's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
the two they usually measure for are ALT and AST. But not all clinics test for those, so not everyone knows their values (actually, my bariatric clinic doesn't test for them, either - I'd gone to my primary care provider for some reason or another (it's been eight or nine years, so I don't remember why) and she did some panel that included liver values. She freaked about it, but my bariatric clinic knew what was going on - and again, they were back down to normal once I was about a year out).. They go up because rapid weight loss is really hard on the liver. -
Hello all! I had my SADI-S done on July 17th and I was trying to find a community/support from others who have gone through bariatric surgery. Both my parents had the RYGB over 10+ years ago, so I guess I'm not really new to bariatric surgery, but I am new to all things SADI/sleeve. I'm currently taking the Bariatric Advantage multiEA with iron and they are...gross. So I'm curious to the alternative people have been taking, but that also meet with the SADI requirements, since I know the malabsorption is an issue. I'm diabetic, and on the Omnipod insulin pump, but with U-500 Humalin instead of U-100. I am extremely insulin resistant, even after the surgery. But it has been way better than before the surgery, so whoo hoo. I think I'm just looking for people to share their own stories with the sleeve/SADI and any tips/tricks along the way.

Anyone gone to Blossom Bariatric (self-pay) in Las Vegas?
kmn1109 posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
After wading through insurance crud, I looked into self-paying and doing it thru Blossom Bariatric's Fast Track program in Las Vegas. My cost would be $6300 all-inclusive, including hotel and transport between hotel and facility for the five days. The selling points include convenience as opposed to the options available with my insurance (closest hospital covered by insurance is a 6-hr drive vs. a 90-min flight to LV), no worries about losing weight before the procedure and getting declined (I'm borderline 40BMI), and no 3- or 6-month waiting period. I have three concerns: 1) Post-surgery followup and care. 2) The "safe sleeve" procedure they do... I can find very little information about it. 3) Not being able to meet the surgeon prior to committing to surgery at the facility. So... has anybody out there had the "safe sleeve" procedure through Blossom Bariatrics in Las Vegas? -

I had a gastric bypass about 6 years old. Fast forward to today. I was recently hospitalized with severe anemia (hemoglobin 5.2). I had to have emergency blood transfusions. I'm still receiving weekly IV-iron infusions (8 weeks). I am also deficient in several nutrients despite taking my bariatric vitamins. My bariatric surgeon figured out the reason for the anemia. Two ulcers detected by an EGD (upper scope). I was slowly bleeding out. At one point, my family thought I was falling asleep... when I was really passing out. Anemia hurts. Your whole body aches. Recovery is slow... the fatigue is unreal but I'll get there.

I’m not sure about in AU, but in US medical files sometimes still say history of obesity/Bariatric surgery so that bypasses a lot of issues when trying to explain why you need help losing regain or maintaining weight. Can others please chime in if they have any information about this? But either way if you can swing it, they are effective. -

i gave a 10 yr passport also (got it in 2017, had wls 2018), and it expires in 2027 i inquired, and apparently i can get the picture updated by applying and paying for a new passport. it'll cost me $160 (for the new passport) + a $45 admin fee for renewing before expiry. i know it will probably save me time at immigration and security at airports, and really its only $45 measly bucks, but i just dont want pay that extra $45 for a new pic ON PRINCIPLE! i'll put up with the extra questions and sideways looks for a couple more years just to be stubborn. -

Our surgeons did their very best to educate us in a manner that would be easy for a broad population to understand but sadly WLS is not as simple as restriction driving weight loss. Check out these excerpts from a review on the Endocrinology of the Gut and the Regulation of Body Weight and Metabolism and also a study that tried to predict outcomes of various WLS on (hedonic) hunger and weight loss : The mechanisms behind the success of bariatric/metabolic surgeries remain to be fully elucidated but post-surgical changes in gut-derived hormonal peptides, bile acids (BA), gut microbiota, and vagal tone are suggested to be involved (13, 14). Read more here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK556470/ Bariatric surgery engenders weight loss through a number of biological changes, which alter eating behavior and thereby result in a reduced energy intake, which is the main driver for sustained weight loss. Gut hormones, metabolically active polypeptides secreted along the GI tract in response to fasting and eating, act upon CNS centers involved in appetite regulation and generate either orexigenic or anorectic responses. Following bariatric surgery, gut hormone secretion profiles change as a result of the anatomical changes from the surgery. Altered gut hormone secretion profiles are thought to be key mediators for weight loss following RYGB and SG. RYGB results in a marked rise in meal-stimulated circulating levels of anorectic hormones peptide YY 36 (PYY) and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1); these changes are also seen post-SG but to a lesser extent. SG, in contrast, leads to a significant reduction in the orexigenic hormone ghrelin, by means of removing most of the ghrelin-producing cell population from the stomach. Ghrelin and PYY/GLP-1 act on appetite-regulating areas of the CNS in an opposing manner, stimulating orexigenic or anorectic responses, respectively [16]. Gastric Banding Concern/Eroding
VETERAN BANDER replied to Amanda A.'s topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
This is my worry. Got in 2012 also. I only have 3ccs in a 10cc band. But I keep hearing how the band can erode and mess us up internally. There are no bariatric doctors locally and I would have to go out of town too. I don't have any issues per say. How are you doing now?
