Bypass surgery in a couple of day and panicking!
Justarwaxx replied to Justarwaxx's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I think so too! I will be that sucess story! I'm just reading so much on other people's mistake so I am ready for it. My worry is like 1-2 year post op and the regain stories. Like is it 100% because of poor food choices? And for them to regain, it must have been ALOOOOT of poor choices for many many days. Because surely u won't regain from one bad day of eating.. these are the thoughts that keeps up... THE FUTURE Hehe -
17 month post GS and 9lbs gain
catwoman7 replied to fifi0523's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
as usual, I agree with everything Arabesque said. A 10-20 lb bounce back regain is very common after you hit your lowest weight. It's your body settling in to where it's comfortable. You can always lose it again if you really work at it - although if that new weight IS your body's new "set point". it'll be a challenge to get back down there and stay there - but it's not impossible. -
Wegovy not working
ShoppGirl replied to wendywitch7's topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
Great idea to speak with your bariatric doctor but discuss the Wegovy with them as well. I have not discussed Wegovy with the bariatric surgeon post surgery but I mentioned it to the PA as a possibility if I am to gain during my cancer treatment over this year if that would be an option and he say it may. I mean he could have assumed that I just meant any GLP-1 and assumed either would do but he didn’t say that Wegovy was not okay for me and I had sleeve prior to my revision to SADI and my surgeon leaves the sleeve as is and does the bypass portion to make up the modified duodenal switch surgery (SADI). Also, post sleeve but pre SADI, I discussed GLP-1 as an option for regain and he said it was a serious contender in terms of what he thought would work for me but the insurance coverage was the issue. I went with the revision and it’s been night and day In terms of the surgery being a better fit for me so I’m not trying to deter you, but maybe the redo was all I needed because I wasn’t mentally ready with the sleeve. I guess I honestly can’t say 100% for certain. Either way, don’t give up. The bariatric doctors won’t give up on you either, together you will find what works for you. Consider what your coverage is and what the cost will be long term though and whether your team will keep prescribing it as a maintenance thing or what happens when you get to goal too because there are pros and cons with both. I mean Wegovy is not surgery and that’s a pro anytime you can avoid surgery but the cost, long term side effects of the shot and regain stats are all things that I would be asking about. -
Accepted For Surgery! ,

Is there any stick with the carrot? As in - if you regain weight whilst waiting for the surgery is there any chance they'll say - well, you couldn't stick the the diet pre-op so you mightn't post op? Not that I think they would, there just seem to be so many ridiculous hurdles to jump though beforehand sometimes. I wouldn't like you to get caught by any of them! -
Disgusted, Disgruntled, but Determined
SpartanMaker replied to lindsxlurid's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
There are things I could suggest to help you get back to your goal weight, but my fear is that until you address the reason you regained weight, you're just going be back on the diet yo-yo. My suggestion would be to seek out a mental health professional that specializes in eating disorders. I'm not saying you definitely have an eating disorder (that would be up to them to diagnose), but it would appear on the surface that you may at a minimum suffer from disordered eating. I'm basing that on your post that seems to indicate that you may be self-soothing with food. Once you've got that under control, my next recommendation would be to seek out a Registered Dietitian to help you with a sustainable diet. There is no shame in seeking help from professionals and they will be in a better position to assist you than anyone here that can just give general advice. -

I am firmly behind using every tool at your advantage to tackle regain: Tracking portions, exercise, joining a support group, checking in with your previous or new weight management team and use of the new anti obesity medications. -
Wisdom from a 10-year VSG Veteran
Danette90 replied to JamieLogical's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Jamielogical thank you for your inspiring words of motivation I had the VSG about 3 years ago and regain weight to the point I was thinking there is no way to get it back off. After reading your story I have the motivation I needed to not give up the fight and reclaim myself. -
I can't afford plastic surgery so have had to make do without. My skin laxity has definitely improved in the almost 3 years since my surgery. I was also certain in the first blush of weight loss in the first year that never would I ever regain even a single ounce, but I did regain quite a lot despite my resolution not to. Haha that's all I have to say! My arms are still the most visible saggy skin I have and they look way better 3 years on. I would rather times a million have this 'problem' than my previous morbid obesity. No brainer. Stomach and bum and legs nobody gets to see and have saggy skin - but also seem better as time progresses. Breasts were the least unforgiving luckily, appearance wise. I know we're all different and we want different things as we progress. Hoping you all get to where you want to be soon. 💚

Wegovy not working
audaciousmarie replied to wendywitch7's topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
Thank you so much for your response. It’s perfect timing that I saw this as I just left the Bariatric surgeon’s office. My experience with GLP-1s was quite discouraging. I was just about ready to give up trying to lose the weight I regained. However, my appointment with the Bariatric surgeon was quite encouraging. He agrees that I qualify for a revision surgery. He laid out the revision surgery options: Bypass, SADI-S or SIPS. Apparently the final revision surgery method will be determined during the surgery when he is able to assess my intestine length for the bypass/malabsorption effect. So for now, I’m going to focus on completing the program steps (Barium swallow, Psych appointment, Nutrition appt, support group, etc) so they can submit the PA for revision surgery. So I’m going to focus on completing the insurance requirements -

Thank you for answering! I have always wondered where I'll be when I'm further out and how I would manage regain, I hear a lot of stories of how people who've had WLS resort to GLP1 treatments at several years out. It would be great to know how you plan to come off/on it again -

I’m not sure about in AU, but in US medical files sometimes still say history of obesity/Bariatric surgery so that bypasses a lot of issues when trying to explain why you need help losing regain or maintaining weight. Can others please chime in if they have any information about this? But either way if you can swing it, they are effective. -
Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water. Anyone out there have a similar experience?

What about trying a GLP-1 versus surgery? Check out Dr Matthew Weiner’s Pound of Cure website, podcasts & you tube channel. He’s been speaking a lot about recommending sleevers with regain to use GLP-1 meds instead of a revision surgery. You may find it interesting & something to discuss with your surgeon as another option. PS. Out of curiosity what was your original starting point weight, your maintenance weight, and current weight?

You're probably right; the InBody is likely more accurate than the smart scale, but it’s definitely not 100% either. I totally get where you’re coming from—I’ve also decided to move on from stressing about the numbers. I think I might be barely hitting my protein intake, and that could be part of the issue. Honestly, I feel like I should just be snacking on chicken breast to get those numbers up! I appreciate the reminder about protein and carbs; it’s helpful to know that our needs can change with activity levels. It sounds like you’re really on top of things with your goals. Keeping track of our intake can be tough, especially with everything else going on! f you don’t mind sharing more about your regain, I’d love to hear about it! I understand if it’s too personal, though. I’ve also been curious about why it seems more common to regain after sleeve surgery compared to bypass, especially since so many people still opt for the sleeve despite bypass being around longer. What do you think contributes to that? Thanks for any insights you can share! -

Lately, I've been eating quite comfortably, and honestly, it's scaring me. I had a week where the scale didn’t move, and just when I started panicking, boom – down 1.7 kg the next week. But here’s the thing... every time I feel confident in my weight loss, I start getting too comfortable, and that makes me so uneasy. And the weirdest part? I’ve become a sweet girl! Like, I actually crave sugar now, which I never used to before. WHY?! 😭 There are no actual signs of regain, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be worried, right? My brain is panicking even though nothing bad is happening (yet). I have a friend who also had gastric bypass, and she keeps telling me: 👉 “Don’t worry, you will lose weight no matter what – that’s what bypass does.” But how true is this??! 😭😭 I feel like I can’t fully trust it, and I don’t want to get too relaxed and regret it later. Someone please tell me I’m not losing my mind. 😣 -

Dr Matthew Weiner has done a few podcast and has been speaking about regain with sleeve on his social media a lot lately. May be worth checking them out if only for some information to consider. He does prescribe GLP -1s for many of his sleevers and says this is a path many will have to go down as regain is common with sleeve. Have you been in contact with your surgeon (if they are still practicing nearby) to discuss options? Have you considered revisiting your dietician too. May be worth tracking what your eating and drinking too just to ensure your not missing something. It’s easy to become complacent about food choices, portion sizes, frequency or meals, etc. or not meeting protein & fluid goals as time passes. Have you had any medication changes? What are your activity levels like? -
Just approved for Surgery in October 2024
ShoppGirl replied to NeonRaven8919's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well your not totally off base if your okay with the bypass. It’s a little more aggressive so it carries with it a little more risk than the sleeve. The reason they do the sleeve I believe is because it’s a bit safer and it is adequate for many people to lose and keep it off but there are some (like me) with regain that need a revision and some that need revision because of GERD and other complications. I would ask the surgeon what percentage of patients need revision because of inadequate loss and/or regain and what percentage for GERD. I believe I read somewhere that it’s 26% need revision but I would definitely not swear to it and I am not sure if that was just for weight or for complications too. I think even if you do end up having to wait it is a good call to get all of your questions answered and feel confident in your decision that it is what’s best for you. -
Dr Matthew Weiner is a great resource so am glad @NickelChip recommended his video. Another is Dr John Pilcher also a great source of information. It’s not really about popularity or the most performed but about which surgery is best for you. Your surgeon should really take into consideration your current health status and history, your weight loss and gain history, your current weight and how much would be beneficial for you to lose, etc. Also discuss the possibility of side effects like malabsorption, dumping, reflux, regain with the surgeries and what you might be willing or not to live with or manage. Do your research, watch these videos and others they may have and prepare questions to ask your surgeon. If you don’t think they’re as comfortable doing one surgery over another or you don’t feel comfortable with their responses, seek a second opinion or a referral to another surgeon. And remember there are other surgeries beside sleeve and bypass so look into them as well (Sadi, duodenal switch,, RNY, or a mini bypass). I would avoid a gastric balloon or gastric banding but that’s my opinion only.

Many years ago (after a Jenny Craig diet) I had a few things taken in but they never fit right after. If you’re dropping down anything more than a bare single size, they really need to take the whole item apart and recut everything which is not always easy or inexpensive to do. Unless it’s something with just straight side seams, a simple waist band & is sleeveless, it’s not an easy fix. PS. I should have saved my money back then because of course I regained the weight I’d lost then & had to buy new clothes again. So glad to be off that rollercoaster now.

I'm 6.5 years out and still have a very restrictive sleeve. But I definitely seem to be an outlier. I can eat about 4 oz at a time. For instance a Taco Bell taco or small McDonald's hamburger. But even with small stomach capacity, it's easy to regain. My stomach empties quickly so there's nothing stopping me from eating to excess. I've had to make a conscious effort to maintain a weight I'm happy with. I use both IF and GLP meds. Along with calorie tracking for accountability. -
Looking for Inspiring Stories - Gastric Bypass Journeys!
ChubRub replied to Justarwaxx's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Congrats on your success thus far!!! My stats are in my signature, but I had WLS in December 2019, which seems like a lifetime ago, although it's only been 5 years! I maintained at 112-118 for the first 4 years, and then last year I regained about 20lbs. I decided to try Mounjaro and quickly lost the 20lbs, and am back to maintaining, and this morning weighed in at 116 (daily weighing is a must for me! LOL!). I didn't really have an hurdles or obstacles, and I confess that I sometimes feel a little guilty that's in been so easy! I'm turned 50 this year, but I feel better than I felt when I was 30 (and look way better too! LOL!!) I also have had a few plastic surgeries along the way, which I also highly recommend if you can afford it. I'm a brand new me!! 🙂 Best of luck to you in your journey to a new YOU!!! -
Another factor is insurance. For example, I know my insurance would happily (as happily as they do anything) cover sleeve or bypass. Meet the requirements and you could have either one of those, no questions asked. Everything else was considered "experimental" and was not covered. Based on my brother's experience of significant regain after sleeve, plus not wanting to risk GERD and the possibility of a revision, I opted for bypass right out of the gate. I felt like that would be a one-and-done surgery, and I have zero regrets. A few key differences to consider are bypass is a stronger metabolic surgery, so you tend to get more durable weight loss if you look at 5-10 years post-op. But weight regain after sleeve can be managed with GLP-1 meds (if you have coverage or can pay out of pocket). If you have reflux or diabetes/pre-diabetes, seriously consider a bypass as this surgery is great for reducing or eliminating these conditions. If you smoke or require a lot of pain meds, seriously consider sleeve because your risk of ulcers with bypass is elevated by smoking and NSAID use, and the ulcers are very hard to cure. Dumping can be unpleasant but managed through dietary choices. I have had a couple very minor instances of dumping. Once after eating too much sugar (I absolutely knew better when I did it), and once after a few bites of a very rich, very fat-filled Thanksgiving side dish (this one surprised me). In both cases, my heart raced for about 15 minutes to the point my Fitbit thought I was exercising and awarded me "zone minutes." For me, that was the extent of it and nothing I couldn't handle. I'll just avoid that green bean dish next time. Some people do get worse responses. A lot of people never dump at all. One thing to consider if choosing a less-known surgery in the US is your doctors outside the surgeon who performs it may not be very familiar with it. Everyone should know what a bypass or a sleeve is. Hospitals or EMTs might not know much about your anatomy with a MGB or a DS, and that could cause delays in treatment, which in an emergency might become an issue. Not to say don't get those if they're right for you, but you may have to spend more time educating yourself and your healthcare team if you do.

You need to schedule and appointment with your surgeon (or his or her NP or PA) if you really are weighing and measuring every little Thing and only getting 800 calories you shouldn’t be gaining but something is getting missed. It could Be medical or you may be missing something in your count. Either way it sounds like this dietician had already made her mind up that there is only one possibility and she probably isn’t going to be the one to help you get to the bottom of things. Make an appointment with your team and start taking pics of all of your food so you can show them exactly what you’re eating everyday. Make an album with all the food pics and hand them your phone so they can scroll through and see for themselves. When I regained after my sleeve. I was embarrassed to go back to team and thought they were going to be so hard on me and when I went back, I realized I couldn’t have been further from the truth. They were so open and compassionate and understanding and all they wanted to do was help. Obesity is complex and they realize it. They go in this field for a reason. They may not get to the bottom of it in one visit. It may even take a few, but trust me it’s worth.It. Don’t give up.

Thanks!! Yea I hope it means the others are in their grove and just enjoying life and too busy to post. Hopefully we will hear from them on occasion at least to hear how they are doing too. I intend to stay on the site. Long-term because with my sleeve I stopped posting as much and well, can’t say that was my entire issue but I’m sure that it contributed to my regain. I also did not do the in person support groups before m or tell many people that I was having surgery. This time I ask for support anywhere and everywhere. I have constant reminders of what my goal is and I’m hoping this will make all the difference.
