How's the genepro protein? I just ordered some and should be here soon. I'm having trouble finding an unflavored protein that isn't awful tasting. Also, congratulations on your win! That's exciting.

    May 2023 surgeries

I'm ten days out from VSG with a esophageal hernia repair. I did need to take Tylenol for pain for seven days, and I'm happy to be pain free now. Luckily, I was able to take 50oz of fluid from the beginning - and I am now up to 75+oz. Honestly, I was more worried about that than food restriction, because I have always loved drinking water. All of the sweet protein shakes and waters have put me off sweet tastes and I have been experimenting. I've been adding GenePro unflavored protein powder to everything (there is one with 22 grams of Protein for a small scoop). I'm in the pureed stage with meat now (I know - but my University's lead surgeon allows on his diet plan) and I have enjoyed cream of malanga soup with one very soft scrambled egg and today I made a kind of blended chicken tzatziki soup with cucumber, cottage cheese, chicken and dill, plus a little water. I'm so happy! 4oz had 21gr of protein. I also love spices, but I'm taking it slow. I have a couple of finishing salts with truffle or lemon/fennel. Just the lightest sprinkle makes a big difference to my tastebuds. And FlavorGod's Gingerbread cookie topper mini-sprinkles gives a zing to all the protein yogurt I've been eating. I hope this helps some people looking for ideas to get away from the sweet tastes. I've also switch off premade protein shakes and back to Iconic brand protein powders. They taste be mild and not sweet, so once you get to the 8oz of liquids I recommend it. I have been getting out to do errands before I go back to work next week, however I haven't really started walking with exercise in mind. It's time to start today. I'm nine pounds down and very happy I made the decision for WLS. 59 since starting this journey with the Bariatric Center in November. I'm a foodie, and I was worried about not being able to enjoy foods in the future and I'm incredibly happy I am on the way to good health. On that note, I was taken off a blood pressure med and a statin by my GP yesterday. THAT was a win! For any of you who are having more challenges after your surgery. Hang in there! My heart is with you because I know that could be any of us.

    January 2023 Surgery Buddies!

I had a VSG on 01/06/23. I loss 38 lbs since the pre-op liquid phase. I consume 800-1000 calories a day and aim for 80+ grams of protein a day. I feel good. I haven't had any issues with any foods. Well except that I cannot tolerate protein shakes at all so I rely on protein rich foods. I can also tolerate unflavored Genepro in my Crystal Light and some protein bars.
  6. I found Genepro to be pretty tasteless, but stopped using it after a few months because of some dubious things I read online about it, and the newest version doesn’t contain as much protein as the former ones claimed to. I now use Syntrax medical unflavored. It has a slight taste, but better than several others I tried. I can’t taste it in oatmeal, pancakes, or breakfast cookies. I think it would have a taste/texture in water, though. GL!

  10. Ok ladies and gents. I am 1 month and 6 days post op from my bypass surgery and my biggest obstacle is getting my protein in. I buy the packs with the cubed meats, cashews and cheese (I am sick of cheese LOL) I am really at this point considering going back to be a pescatarian because those are the items that feel better going down. Non of that scratching, painful feeling I get with chicken or sausage. Now to the point, I am very allergic to artificial sweetners, sugar alcohol and Stevia so is there a simple protein powder shake I can take that does not have any of that (oh and plant based *no whey*)? Genepro unflavored protein powder in the silver bag was perfect, but GNC stopped selling it and I can't seem to find it anywhere. Any suggestions????

  12. Several companies sell protein soup mixes. Those would count as meals, but not those without protein. Count those as fluid. You don't need to be concerned about "meals" right now. Count your protein grams and your ounces of fluids. Bariatric Advantage and BariWise sell powdered protein soups and probably others. You can also add unflavored protein powder, such as Genepro, to non-protein broths and drinks.

    July 2022 peeps!

I've been using Genepro. There's no taste, so it's easy to add to soups. The problem I've had with them is that they don't mix well and can lump up when I microwave the soup if I don't get the powder to fully disolve.

    August surgery buddies!

Maybe you could recommend a different unflavored protein powder other than GenePro. I can’t tolerate it at all! Where can I get the liquid protein??

3 months post VSG and NOTHING

I feel your frustration! I’ve only lost about 60 lbs in the past year and a half since my VSG. My dietitian isnt very helpful in my trying to get my grams of protein other than adding protein shakes which definitely slows down my weight loss! I’ve resorted to eating (and tracking!) an all protein diet (eggs, fish, chicken, etc..) and adding in small amounts of green veggies. To get to my protein goals I have to add a protein powder like unflavored GenePro to my food and drinks. I only weigh myself a few days a week. Now I’ve developed terrible acid reflux and a hiatal hernia so I’m going to be revised to a RNY. I’m hoping it will fix a multitude of issues!!! Hang in there! Take a look at MyFitnessPal to track your food and macros!
  16. Has anyone figured out how to utilize GenePro protein powder and not have your foods taste like a chemical lab experiment?! 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

    Pain after surgery

I tried mixing one of the protein powders with water and it was really gross. It wasn’t as bad with crystal light but I think I still had the bad taste in my memory (it was too soon) cause I couldn’t drink it all. Mine was genepro which is supposed to be unflavored but I could taste it and so could my husband.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

Congratulations on losing 20 pounds. 16 to go is so close! From what I read and what my doctor's office said, the first 6 months of weight loss is the biggest & then it starts slowing down, especially as you get closer to goal/healthier weight. People can lose beyond that first year, but it seems to be harder. I'm sure gaining it back is easy to do if old habits return. I have been adding genepro (unflavored protein powder) to my yogurt or to iced coffee to help reach my daily protein goals. I understand it can be hard to get it all in. I think your idea of adding it to your soup & yogurt is a great way to get protein in if you are having difficulty. Maybe start with 1/2 serving added to a beverage or liquid/mushy food (soup & yogurt, as you said)? (I mix it with a little room temp water before adding it to hot or cold beverages & then slowly incorporate it) The hairloss gets better. Mine is coming back in, so I have all these shorter hairs mixed in with my long ones. Wishing you luck in losing the 16 pounds & maintaining your loss.

    Protein Intake A Struggle

I couldn't handle the shakes in the beginning until I learned the coffee trick. I use one scoop of unflavored genepro, one bottle of the fairlife shakes (salted caramel or vanilla) and an ounce or two of black cold brew coffee or decaf espresso. Mix it all up and it taste like a frappe but not as sweet and that's 60grams or protein in one drink. I usually put it in the freezer for a little to be fancy! Sent from my GM1917 using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. Everything is going okay. I miss chewing though🥺 getting in my water is a struggle. I can only drink warm lemon water. I’m up to 5 cups. I hate all my protein shakes now. I found I can take Fairlife 1% plus genepro unflavored protein powder with only a little issue. I’m happy overall though. How are you doing?
  22. Elidh

    protein powders

Hi Lisa, I used unflavored Genepro.
  23. I found that pudding went down the easiest and was the most filling post op. Pudding also counts toward your fluid intake as it’s a full liquid. Not sure if you are past the clear phase but I would suggest you try sugar free pudding and maybe some Genepro to add to your liquids. Soup also helped me get my fluids in. Drink a little .. take a break.. drink more.. repeat.. best of luck!
  24. I had no problems with those foods, either. I did not try almond milk or Isopure (I did Genepro occasionally for a few months, mixed into refried beans, etc.).
  25. The biggest misunderstanding is you don’t need 64oz of “water”, you need 64oz of fluid. Fluid includes full liquids too like jello, broth, sugar free pudding, water, protein shakes, drinkable yogurt (yogurt with milk added), etc. As for the protein if you add two scoops of Genepro to a 16.9 oz water bottle that’s 60 grams in itself. Sip that bottle throughout the day and you’ll get 60 grams from that & then get your extra 20+ protein from foods like eggs, beans, ricotta, yogurt, meats, etc. Hope this helps!
