So I won the lawsuit against SLIMBAND IN TORONTO how do i collect
jenottawa replied to ppaja60@gmail.com's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I don't think any elective surgeries are being booked right now as so many have been cancelled that they have a BIG backlog when they start up again... Also, no court cases are being held right now either. I have contacted a couple of lawyers and they never got back to me. Also, I was told not to go after Slimband but the maker OF the band as one went bankrupt and the other is still operating. -

Hello - I had my lapband done in 2015 by Slimband in Toronto. And like many others - issues from day one with no support or assistance. I've had many years of vomitting. Finally got referred to Wharton Medical Clinic and Dr. Wharton suggested I go on a class action lawsuit for this. He immediately said - it has to come out and is referring me to Surgery Clinic in Hamilton. I'm really hoping it won't take long to get done. Will be so glad to have this nightmare over with. Any assistance on how to register for class action somewhere - I'm sure I won't see any money but really feel it needs to be counted/reported. Thank you. -

I have no idea! I had/have problems with my slimband and I wanted to contact my slimband clinic here in Toronto and learned they closed down because their malpractice! I started to do research about it and that's when I saw an article about butchered slimbands and this Women's College Hospital's doctor who removes slimbands! I will send you this website to read the article: https://www.rcinet.ca/en/2018/01/12/gastric-band-bleeding-pain-cbc-marketplace/. It doesn't say anything about charging money, but I am just wondering if somebody would be in a life threatening situation and would have no money for the surgery than they would let that person to die?! I see so many people here with slimband problems and will be more and more in the future and somehow I do not see how we would get any help from anywhere! -

Yes are you able to practise in Canada? If you have experience in Class Action suits and defective medical devices that would be great. The doctor and the clinic I don't think are where we go from here. I think it is to go after the its a multiple party law suit where Slimband is part of it but the financial company which is the same partners as the clinic and governing corporate parties, and the big boys to bring to the table is the manufacture of the lapband that is causing is a complete malfunctioning device and causing massive health issues for all us that in some cases have been life threatening and incorrectable. So definitely if your a lawyer that could spear head a class action suit here in Canada you will have a lot of plaintiffs that are more then willing to step up and provide a case for you that will be lucrative to all parties! -

I would also like to be involved, I am currently having problems with mine and it looks like I will have to get it removed. I have had mine for almost 5 years and had problems with it from the very beginning. There was no support and no weight loss. Slimband was the biggest mistake of my life, pain, throwing up and now it’s no longer working, I can’t wait to get it out of me. -

No they are the same product just two different clinic names. Dr Lau originally opened it as Toronto Lapband Clinic. Then when he was sued. Him and his partners declared bankruptcy and opened up the same clinic in the same location doing the same procedure which is the Lapband and doing fills and they called it Slimband. Same procedure, same company just two different names. There is only one type of weight loss surgery that they do which is the Lapband. -

Apparently Slimband and Lap-Band are two different things. The Slimband is hollow and filled with fluid and you have a port sewn into the side of your abdomen so that you can fill or de-fill as needed to restrict or release the size of your stomach. I believe it has its own patent. -

Everybody just stay tuned to this thread and I will update when I have more information about a class action. If anybody is part of any other weight loss support groups that include Slimband patients, please let them know about this. I am sure that with the statistics given in the news story I posted (and will post again) about necessary removal, that we could get numbers into the hundreds and they will HAVE to pay - especially us gals that had to go through Credit Medical to get the ridiculous loan for the procedure. As of 2017, over 200 bands have had to be removed. https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/gastric-band-surgery-marketplace-1.4479735 -
Lots of topics already out there on Slimband. I think consensus is they went bankrupt and no one is going to get much. https://www.bariatricpal.com/search/?q=Slimband

Good Day All, Long story short, I'd like to know if anyone has heard of a class action lawsuit that has been started? If you haven't but would like to be, I would like to start a petition of sorts so I can get a ballpark of numbers to give the lawyer. There is a good lawyer in London Ontario that I have contacted previously, but unless there are numbers, there's no point. In Oct 2013 I had the band placed in a rush of fury by their lies and pressure tactics. After 6 months of not being able to drink water without it coming back up, they finally agreed to remove it. Shortly after the removal I found out I was pregnant (not expected I could even get pregnant because of the malnutrition), but because I couldn't keep any nutrients down before and after removal, the baby never stood a chance. I had to have a emergency dilation of my esophagus twice and still can't have thick liquids without it coming up. I also just applied to have correct weight loss surgery, and was denied because they won't touch patients that have previously had a band. Now I've reached my limit and reading all of these other horror stories, something needs to be done. Signing on the dotted line in this case is bullshit. The clinic was shut down it was so bad, so clearly these signatures should be null and void too. I am not asking for extensive information, but if you would like to see how far this could go, please just leave your name and year Slimband screwed you over./ Much thanks, and power to us people ;) Holly M - Waterloo Ontario

So I won the lawsuit against SLIMBAND IN TORONTO how do i collect

I have contacted a legal firm in Vancouver that already has a class action against the company that makes Lap-Band. Since we already have many people interested in a class action against Slimband, they might just take the case on a contingency basis (i.e. they would get 10% of any money recovered). I will let you know if/when I hear back from them. Since the Slimband clinic is closed, that would not be our target. And unfortunately it wouldn't be Dr. Patrick Yau either. It would be the owner of BOTH Slimband clinic and CreditMedical.com where many of us got our medical loans from, as it is still practicing and making TONS of money charging huge interest rates on medical loans. Where there's big money, you can bet a lawyer is going to be interested - especially since they've probably already done a lot of research into banding for their initial suit. Personally I will probably have the band removed at some point but not until I can find a surgeon that will revise my RNY to make the pouch smaller. I had an RNY in 2002 and the pouch expanded so I got the Slimband in 2013 to increase restriction again. If I take the band off, I will still have the big pouch, and I don't want that. I expect that with missed work due to Slimband complications since January 2013, I will be owed in the tens of thousands of dollars easily. -
Dr Yau and Slimband 2015 lawsuits
Hanbe replied to Bandedbutburnt's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Sorry you have also had a bad experience. Dr Lau and Slimband have both filed bankruptcy so you would be unable to file lawsuits against either and get anywhere. i would if I were you I would go to you’re family doctor and let them know that you’re having major issues. They can send you to a general surgeon and possibly remove the lapband. That would be what I would suggest -

Conversion from lapband to sleeve - lower BMI
ccorr replied to Stella84's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Scheduled to have my band removed and going with a sleeve. Had my band placed by Slimband in 2011. Loved my band until it stopped working in 2018. I have had 5 fills, a scope, and a swallow showing nothing wrong but I have no restriction 🤷♀️. I have gained 25 lbs in a year and have become so depressed ugh! Looking forward to having surgery next month. -

If you are interested, please contact me! If you can't make those dates, reach out to me anyways and we can talk about options. Slimband - Cuts off TLBC Patients
Niki Spence replied to bellacatgirl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have had my Slimband for 11 years and I am trying to offer my support to those that have been feeling abandoned now that the company is no longer doing the surgeries and do not have the support that they once had or promised. I am not involved in pursuing any legal action against Slimband. But I can offer guidance if you need support, fills or defills, or need/want to have it removed and are considering getting the revision from band to sleeve, bypass or duodenal switch. DM me to talk. I should disclose that I am a former Slimband employee, and worked there for about six years, and left on my own free will in 2016. -

Former TLBC Patient (Dr. Yau) Lap-Band Removal ... Questions? Process?
Niki Spence replied to AnneElliot's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was banded by Slimband 11 years ago and still have my band. However, I have helped others have their band removed and have the band-to-sleeve or band-to-bypass revision surgery done and they are soooo happy. I can also help ones that just need to have their band adjusted to a proper level of restriction. DM me if you want to talk about getting fills/defills or about revision to a more effective weight loss surgery. -

One of the former directors of Slimband owns CreditMedical Inc. which is the loan company many of us got our $16,000 loans from in order to get banded. I don't think it would hurt to go after him as well since he gave us the loans fraudulently at a high interest rate for a faulty medical device. Report as to what you find out. -

Hi I'm a veteran Lap Bandster, Im looking to get a fill- Im in Barrie and can travel as far as I need to by car. Im hoping of the few bandster left someone knows of one currently doing fills. Barrie/ York Region/ Toronto. Mine was done by Dr Yau about 15 years ago or more, right after it was approved In Canada. Have had fills at Scarborough Grace, then Slimband, then Prince Arthur. The band has been mildly effective, at first I lost about 90 Lbs, but I have regained 50 Lbs. ovr time. I hardly even know the band is there. The last time I saw Dr yau- years ago- he said if I thought the band slipped he could go in and if it needed replacement it would cost me another $5K..So I've done nothing since then. I searched here and found a post for one on Yonge street but it was from 5 years ago. Thanks for any help.
