Hi Tracy, When you say you have good and bad days, are you referring to restriction/tightness, or with your food choices? I think you mean the first, but just wanted to make sure. It's funny... I never noticed feeling tighter during my period UNTIL last month. I had been filled to 9 cc earlier in the month. That 1 cc made a big difference. I couldn't get food down and I had chest pain. I couldn't experience that every month, so my doctor removed the 1 cc, and now I'm at 8 cc again. I'm a little disappointed because that extra 1 cc made a good difference the remaining weeks of the month. I admit all of my choices aren't the best choices. I've never noticed more restriction during periods of feeling run down or tired. I'll have to pay closer attention to this. Stress is a possibility for me. I was under tremendous stress during my last period, which was the ordeal I explained above. As soon as my doctor removed that 1 cc, the chest pain subsided. Just make sure this isn't happening to you too frequently. Living with a band that's too tight could lead to a complication.

I should have asked sooner...

"I'm tired of having my cups runneth over" That one made my belly jiggle. Sue, my best friend from high school just had a reduction at 41 yrs old. Her doctor recommended a reduction when we were still in high school since she had numb Patches on her shoulders since 16. She was teased in high school, they'd say she was smuggling watermellons. She never flaunted them and was very self-conscious, but that didn't stop her from eating up the attetion. I never understood why she had dates every single weekend (naive late bloomer figured it out when my friend that dated her admitted he just wanted her boobs.) She was size 7 then. But over the years she packed on the pounds. She went for consultations, and the docs told her to lose weigh first. It went on for years, and finally they allowed the reduction cause the weight wasn't coming off. She went into surgery with a Triple H cup. Being a nurse herself, she insisted on the best surgeon in the San Antonio area, and he later told her that she was his biggest case in history. He wasn't even able to tell her what size she'd be afterwards, but estimated a large C to a D. She had enormous pain and a lot of complications - hers were still so heavy that they kept opening the stitchs. But she's finally free. Her only regret was waiting so long. She's somewhere between a C & D cup and at 41 years old is wearing T-shirts with bras for the first time in her life. She was always the girl with the unbuttoned blouse over something else, pulling it closed all the time. Freedom at last. -
It was definitely VGB that they referred to and 40% (4 out of 10 complication rate) that CANNOT be the lap band....I don't even think the slip rate is that high!

KateBruin - so sorry to hear about this! I hope they get you fixed up soon! Sleeved 8 weeks ago and no complications so far here. I'm feeling very blessed.

Did you have WLS? The audacity of some.
sherri~ replied to Deactivatedfatgal's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I agree! I was in denial. And I didn't even learn my lesson until a few years later when I almost died from diabetic ketoacidosis. Thankfully I've had a "come to Jesus" talk with myself and got courage to do what I needed. So far, the only complication I have has been in my eyes and thats improving. -
Did you ever see the movie "When Harry Met Sally" In the beginning of the movie he says men and women can't stay friends, because they will always end up in bed. I have this guy friend who wants to be more than friends. I just see nothing but red flags with him as far as relationship material. As far as a friend goes, I value his friendship and hate to lose it. He told me the other night that by us staying friends, I am just teasing him. I asked him if wanted to stop hanging out, and he said no. I've gotten to the point now though that I've realized I can't be alone because he will always start with the touchy-feely stuff and start asking me why I won't at least '"give us a try" Things are fine if we are out with a group of friends. We have friends in common. To complicate things, he is my go to person for problems (which come up often) with my rental or my house. He will fix things on my rental much cheaper than anyone. The other handymen or contractors will charge almost triple what he will charge me. Right now there's a problem with the roof, and I really can't afford anyone else. I don't understand how things changed for him. He's always come to me for dating advice in the past before he talks things over when he's having a problem with the person he's seeing. I want to keep this friendship but it's getting harder all the time.

Q from a newbie: Do all lap-banders get reflux?
SpideyMom replied to SpideyMom's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yes, I've been reading a lot of the complications, and it can get a bit overwhelming. Thanks for your insight. I will definitely talk to the surgeon about this at my next appointment! :smile2: -
so i asked my dr where he learned to do the sleeve. he said he taught himself after watching his partner do them and by also watching videos of other dr's who had done them. i guess he really learned while being in the operating room with his partner (who is the head of the bariatrics unit). my dr has done over 300 rny's, 100's of lapbands and 6 sleeves. he says he only had 1 leak ever, and that was in an rny patient. i also asked him if there were any deaths and he said 1, but that was a person who was getting a revision of a revision. he seems very honest and straightforward in all his answers. his 6 sleeve patients are all doing well. my dr works on one of the best bariatric teams in new york, which is the st lukes hospital bariatric unit, which is also a bariatrics center of excellence and a leading research center for bariatric surgery. their team is headed by dr julio teixeira, who has done thousands of wls and teaches other dr's. dr teixeira is also well known to do surgeries that many other dr's wont touch because theyre being done on patients at high risk and/or with complications. apparently hes that good. i dont know how many sleeves he has done. my dr is the no. 2 on his team and his name is dr james mcginty. my insurance has dr mcginty on my plan, but no other dr from that hospital is on my insurance as different dr's there take different insurance companies. im confident in my dr and he was the best and most experienced from all the dr's that were accepted by my insurance. what do you think about him saying he was self taught? im not really worried about him only having done 6 sleeves (this was discussed in a prior thread), im just concerned about what is considered the normal way for a dr to learn how to do the sleeve? any replies would be appreciated. ps - i did ask my dr a ton of questions about the sleeve and his procedure, including bougie size, how far from the pyloric valve does he start, leak testing and so on, and he answered them all to my satisfaction. and ive researched the sleeve so throughly that i knew what answers i should of gotten. he really seems to know what he is doing and i am very confident in using him, but i guess him saying he was self taught is making me think. ps - i edited this ps in later. i just found out my dr operated on james gandolfini (tony soprano) back in 2008 (see link below). so if hes good enough for tony soprano, hes good enough for me http://showhype.com/story/news_james_gandolfini_hospitalized /

The only thing I was required to do was get a referral from my PCM to go to the surgeon I chose. I also had a referral from my endocrinologist to go see this surgeon, so the PCM was a formality for the insurance. I am +100 lbs overweight, diabetic, sleep apnea, and a couple other issues, so I met all the criteria, and because my physician requires it, I was able to produce 2+ years of diet history, including the diet my endocrinologist has had me on for the past year, plus my medical history where a former PCM recommended me for gastric bypass and my subsequent refusal to have it (due to someone I know who had complications), so... I saw the Dr. on 4/7. He sent the paperwork in that week. Tricare approved me on 4/14. I found out on 4/21. They called on 5/12 and scheduled me for 5/29. They had originally planned to schedule me for 5/22, but I have a work thing and had no choice but to put it off one more week. I wanted to cry. But that's Ok. I have time to prepare (AND I'm already on a planned vacation that week so I don't have to explain a darn thing to a darn soul about where I've been !)

Banded 17th December in Australia
Melinco replied to Nicole0477's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
If you don't mind my asking, why did you have to be rebanded three days later? Did you have serious complications? -
Sorry to hear about your complications! I had a pic line when I had my lap band taken out... They suck but are necessary to heal properly! Sending you positive, healing vibes.... Hope things turn around soon!
-
$22k in DC. (would have been $19.5k but I had to have a band removed as well.) Shop around; another program I'd looked into locally wanted $60k for the same surgery. That kind of difference is fairly mindboggling. No complications here, but I almost ended up having to spend a fourth day in the hospital due to pain, which would have been an extra $1k-ish/day.

New Here Looking For Suggestions
lighteningbug replied to TxMimi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Definitely recommend Dr. James Davidson in Dallas now that I'm post op with no complications! I was referred to him by 2 other friends here in Dallas who used him 3 years ago. One of my friends' dad is a top plastic surgeon in Dallas and this is who he referred his daughter to use when she decided on the surgery. I'm not sure if you are part of the christian sleever group, but I have never felt more at peace with my decision that right Before the surgery when Dr. Davidson came in and asked if we could pray together before anesthesia arrived. He took my hand and thanked God for so many things, then asked God for guidance and a quick recovery for myself and my family. I could not have been any more calm and relaxed knowing this surgeon has a personal relationship with the Lord and understands what a big decision this is for people like us. Smooth as could be, anesthesia came in and they started 5 minutes later! Arrived home yesterday, walked two miles today and I am completely off pain meds already 3 days post op! I couldn't be happier! -
I'm on pre op diet, 2 days left, damn it feels good to say that! My pre op started pretty bad, cravings, mind telling me things would taste amazing. I kept looking back on my life. Did I really enjoy that? Did I need that? Did I NEED that? Nope. Not at all. Determination is where it's at, get your mind in the right spot. Remember everything that's hard right now, and then imagine a world you live in where things aren't so complicated. America has become such a foody type nation, everything we do revolves around food, so much that it's killing our children and loved ones. I got tired of living to eat instead of eating to live.

Pre-Op Liquid Diet Day # 2
cmehl73 replied to cmehl73's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh Wow! Thanks so much for the advice! Congratulations on you being 5 weeks out. How are you feeling? I am so scared about having complications after the surgery. I have one friend who had the Bypass and had numerous issues the first couple of months, but is super skinny now and is a little over a year out. My other friend was sleeved and had no pain, no nausea, no nothing! I was like, "Really?!?!?" I want and am hoping for the same thing. My doc only put me on a 4 day liquid pre-op diet. How come I am seeing people posting different lengths of time for them? Does it depend on how heavy you are? Some say 7 days, some 2 weeks, etc. -
Ok, allow me to give you some background info, bounce my problems off you and see if you can sort this out for me... I was banded 9/18/2006. I've lost 100 lbs give or take depending on the day. Since mid December I've not lost much of anything. I had a .50cc fill 2/2/08 lost 4 lbs then totally stopped loosing again. At first I chalked it up to too many Holiday treats, now I'm getting worried. It's March-there's no more Holiday treats to sneak! I told my Doc I only wanted a .25cc fill. I thought .50cc would be too much. I feel tight, but I'm not sure it's too tight. I have a coffee & yogurt for Breakfast, salad w/grilled chicken for lunch, and most of the time I have a Protein drink for dinner. Granted I have a wicked sweet tooth, and I usually have a chocolate snack around 3:00pm. But that's nothing new, and it's usually very small, like a chocolate pudding cup, or a couple kisses, or hot cocoa. I don't think I eat enough not to be loosing anything. My God, if thats all I can eat to maintain 180+ lbs, I'll never make it to 120! What would I be eating, a rice cake every-other day??? I slipped my band 1/16/07, and I now live in constant, consuming fear of another slip, or other complication. I digress... For all of you still reading my ramble, thank you, now allow me to get to my point. Since my fill, some days I feel like I can only drink my meals, somedays I can eat everything in sight. I always gurgle. I have HORRIBLE burping fits. I sound like an 85 year old man with no manners left. I sometimes scare my 5 year old, he thinks it's a monster coming to get him. I get the shoulder gas pain often. It doesn't feel like my slip felt, but I don't know. Am I just mental? Am I normal? Is there something wrong? Any of you get the burps this bad? Can I do anything about it? Honestly, my coworker came to my desk the other day to tell me, and I quote... "What are you doing over here, it's the grossest thing I've ever heard!" I need help!

1 week INTO Pre-Surgery Diet

For some reason (maybe it's my background in international relations) but I find it strikingly funny/ironic that the remains of my stomach will be a permanent resident of the sovereign nation of Mexico. I know Medical Tourism isn't new and I'm sure I could battle the red-tape here in Estados Unidos to try and help with my first-world obesity (thanks, Nixon for all the corn syrup!) but I am not a patient patient. I've lived in the US, UK, and Australia, and I can't wait to experience the Mexico healthcare system. Somehow I feel badly about our immigration policy given that I'll be leaving behind 75% of my stomach to return to my capitalistic lifestyle back north of the border. There's something really strange to me that there is such scarcity of good, real food. I just moved back to the US from a year in Oz and while I was a bit aghast at some of the culinary offerings down under I am struck by the pervasiveness of processed, synthetic, chemical, and genetically-modified foodstuffs that have invaded our food system. Why aren't we angrier about these issues? If competition is supposed to force the optimal outcome why do we have substandard food as the norm in the United States? I'm grateful I've kept my portion sizes to AUS standards and I'm grateful I have the opportunity to make a huge change in my life including elective surgery and an amazing health club for continued life improvement. I actually took a job in Colorado to ensure that I was in a healthy environment and had access to organic foods. I rented an apartment right near a great health club and I have a job that allows me time to get surgery and time to go work out. I am lucky, I am fortunate, and it's time I take advantage of it all. At the end of the day I'm left thinking: this all shouldn't be so complicated. No one knows how to eat properly because we've been fed misinformation all our lives. Time to get simple I s'pose.

January 2015 Buddy Group anyone?
sachimom replied to time for june's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks so much for the welcome. I'm on a two week pre-op. Requirements per day are carbs: below 30, protien: 70, Fat: low. I'm a total carbaholic, so it has been a challenge. I've done other low carb diets before but never this low! I'm petrified of complications tho, so that has been a great motivator to do as I'm told, lol! I'm mostly doing shakes with some cottage cheese or eggs. 24 hours before I'm supposed to go all Clear Liquids. How about you? Is yours similar, how are you feeling? So far, I'm really excited but expecting to get nervous soon too. I have to admit seeing your countdown ticker gave me a few butterflies. -
How Did You Find and Choose Your Bariatric Surgeon?
NewLife'sGr8 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'd seen a co-worker achieve amazing success with her bypass WLS. I asked her about it & she told me who she went to & what she had done. I then researched the various available WLS options; Bypass, RNY, Banding, DUO Switch (or whatever that's called); each procedure's benefits, fallbacks, possible complications, the actual procedure details, the risks, how many die on the table from each WLS procedure, and each year from post-opcomplications, the prognoses on each procedure, pre-op protocol, avg hospital stay, post-op protocol & long term prognoses. When I decided on the banding, I conducted a parallel analysis between the Lap & Realize bands (I chose the Realize). Then, I checked out the surgeons' practices, online. Read every page. I read every detail about each surgeons' Education, Colleges/Universities attended and whether they earned multiple degrees/ other specializations, their college ranking (if they're dead last in their class, I don't want em!) whether or not they graduated with honors or were awarded Fellowships (only the best of the best are), their affiliations & memberships & what boards/ committees they're serving on, whether or not they are graduate-school, teaching doctors, their practice histories (whether or not they've moved around a lot-not a good indication of quality), other specializations, their WLS philosophies & if they stay abreast of latest technologies, their success rate, if they participate with my ins. & what's covered / what's not, their surgery schedules (how far out they're booking surgeries), etc. Then, I went to Health Check site which shows patient-rating scores on a number of patient-driven experiences with their surgeon, plus with commentary. This site covers docs across a broad range of specializations, not just WLS. The site also shows whether the surgeon has been sued for malpractice or sanctioned by their licensing agency/oversight org. - for any number of possible violations. I found Malene Ingram to be an excellent fit for me & she was. After the surgery, though, you only see the PA's for fills, etc. I imagine the PA's refer more serious issues back to Doc Ingram, if it looks like more surgery is necessary. -
Potential emergencies and insurance
SoCalDixieGal posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I'll admit, the complications and such I've read about for this surgery make me nervous. Heck, who wouldn't be. And being self pay,we are bombarded by all the messages and fear about complications. So, I just finished pouring through my insurance plan legal disclosure documents. Yeah, fun read. Big relief in that my plan will cover emergency services for complications resulting from non-covered services. Phew. Hopefully I won't need to take advantage of that but glad to know i am covered in the event of an emergency. -
I was definitely not ready for camping 2-3 weeks out. I had no complications but I just didn't rebound as quickly as some folks. I was also unable to eat at all for the first two weeks and drinking was a struggle. That got better in week 3 for me. How fast you recover is very much a YMMV kind of thing. Can you defer the decision until you see how you feel?

Complication after complication
alb replied to HappilyEverAfter44's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I too had 2 strictures the first one being at 4 weeks out! However my bariatric surgeon performed my endoscopy and dilated me on the spot. Two weeks later I was sick again and went for a second endoscopy and again he dilated me on the spot! And that time it stayed. I cannot imagine going as long as you had to wait....I vomited non stop during my strictures and couldn't eat or take Vitamins. That's a very long time to feel miserable. Sorry you had to endure such. Prayers your complication days are over! Sent from my SM-G900F using the BariatricPal App -
What were your worst symptoms post-op?
Vinasu replied to KaiserKid's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery on Wednesday and was back at work on Monday. It depends on how strenuous your job is, whether you have complications, how healthy you were before surgery, and just plain luck of the draw. Sent from my SM-G925V using the BariatricPal App
