  1. My doc said that almost everybody experiences weight gain the first week (even through the post-op visit). So I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm only 2 days ahead of you and haven't had that problem, but I can seem to get enough water intake as it is, so maybe this is why???? I just want to know when the burping will stop! Soooo over it!
  2. Can anyone tell me how long this Water weight hangs around? Surgery was on Thursday May 7, just sent home today, Saturday May 9. I had heard of this dreaded weight gain, but frankly I didn't expect it to stick around so long. Can anyone share their experience? Of course I'm starting to feel as if I'll be the only person having undergone a Roux En Y gastric bypass and not able to lose weight. Certainly emotional fears not based in reality. Thanks for the support of this forum, I do not go through this experience alone.

    When Can I Start Eating Bread?

    @@K-Lynn because it is a starchy carbohydrate and it will lead to weight gain. Also, many overweight folks are addicted to carbs and sugar, both in breads...My surgeon has all his patients avoid all starchy carbs (breads, pastas, potatoes, rice) until they have reached their goal/maintenance weight. By that time you should be more in control of your eating and if you start to gain weight, hopefully you have learned tools to get it back off quickly.

    Band to sleeve AETNA

    What was your approval process like? So confused because I had to have band out last month and nobody told me that I can't gain weight!!! Reading these posts I am worried because I gained a couple since my band was removed. Surgeon always does 2 step process but never mentioned weight gain. Nervous! Final appointment Monday! I have Aetna also and am in nyc.

    I don't know about weight gain with Spironolactone but I got incredible uncle weakness and foggy brain. Went away about 6 weeks after stopping it.

    BCBS Federal Insurance Authorization

    I received a call today. They didn't submit my paperwork because they don't have a two year weight history with a high enough BMI. I'm being told I will have to wait until January 2016. Very upset and very discouraged. I've done everything. I've been on a yo-yo diet, weight loss and weight gain, but I don't have all the proper paperwork. I can't even get my doctor to write a letter about this.

    Can't wait for sushi

    Sashimi is usually cut thin. The block of fish is the piece the counterman cuts the slices from. I'm sure though, if you ask for thin sliced sashimi, they will do it for you. I was also going to recommend sashimi. The fish alone, without the rice or sauce or other toppings is very low in fat and calories and is a healthy option as long as you stay away from the soy sauce...or cut the soy sauce with Water. This is what I do and I find that I don't have much water weight gain from the sodium content. Enjoy!

    Long Term VSG Sleevers?

    I'm sorry, i realized this THREAD has nothing to do with Almanza in particular but it has to do with long term sleevers which I am, and i wanted to warn long termers that IF they experience weight gain... NOT to seek a 'resleeve' because it does not work. I would be happy to go into what I have now learned about how the previously sleeved stomach is in no way a candidate for another sleeve. IF anyone would care to know. I just want to prevent others from wasting their money and become as depressed as I am. I tried to deal with his staff but to no avail
  9. I have gained a bit of weight back, and I have to admit that it's hard not to freak out completely. I was reading up on post wls weight gain and came across this procedure.   10. She has added about 150 calories more a day about a month ago (sitting about 700 cals a day now) and noticed a stall, then slow weight gain of about 5 pounds in that time. She walks 5 times a week and has since she had the surgery.

    When Can I Start Eating Bread?

    Kind of a two fold answer. Firstly, bread can be very hard to digest in the early stages of WLS. I know it feels like a brick in my sleeve the few times I've indulged in a little bread. Second, bread and starches are complex carbs, which turns into sugar and is slower to digest. That equals possible weight gain and cravings for more carbs and sugar, which can be major triggers for some. I know if I just stay away from complex carbs altogether, the less I crave junk. When I do indulge, it takes me days to detox and stop the cravings. That's why I and many other WLS patients choose to limit bread or stay away completely.
  12. Has anyone else noticed weight gain after having a skin removal surgery? When I had my first surgery which was three procedures at once, a lower face/neck lift, a arm lift and a breast lift with implant, I was in such pain that I babied myself with food during recovery. Eating what sounded good and not really noticing fat or carbs, then after recovery I found myself up 10 lbs. rather than being down some weight which I was expecting. Then last year when I had my lower body lift, I told myself I wasn't going to let that happen again, but low and behold that 10 lbs. came back. I have heard there is swelling and that could be part of it. But shouldn't the removed skin take care of that weight? I have a good friend who has had a total body makeover and has had this same thing happen, so it makes me wonder if it's some part of self destruction that's deep inside of us??? I am currently getting in the best shape I can so I will be as fit as possible when I go in for my long thigh lift at the end of summer, and this time it's not going to happen...hopefully.
  13. I find this thread so interesting...I have never really followed the rules very well which has worked for me so I guess I am very lucky. At Year 3 I do still try to get my Protein in and I don't really drink with my meals, but I eat whatever I want, just in small quantities and I exercise faithfully. Still, I did have a 4 lb weight gain so I went to the 5 Day Pouch test and I am now 1 lb under goal. Very happy with that for Year 3. I just don't want dieting and food to control my life any more so I am just trying to be like a normal weight person.
  14. I received this email today from www.myfitnesspal.com . Basically, it says to avoid long-term weight gain we should: 1. Eat more Protein 2. Eat more healthy carbs (colored, high-Fiber veggies; fruits; whole grains) 3. Eat fewer highly processed "slider foods" (highly refined sweets, starches, chips, crackers, breads, white rice, white potatoes, white Pasta, etc.) Duh, huh? The emphasis was on both how much and what kind of foods we should eat.   15. Okay, so I've overshot my final goal, and my wife is upset that I'm getting "too skinny". Now what? I'm still losing, slowly, but I really need to stop, and maybe even put 2-3 pounds back on. I guess I need to get out of ketosis. My doc suggested adding back carbs that you'd eat cooked with a meal (brown rice, sweet potatoes, whole wheat Pasta, etc. And I'm guessing quinoa, barley and oatmeal would probably be okay, too. Can any of you vets who have successfully transitioned to maintenance advise about how you did it? What can we do to stop the weight loss – and what shouldn't we do – in order to prevent weight gain? Thanks in advance!!!

    My First Roadblock

    I am so happy that you are taking steps to improve your health! Please don't lose faith that you can do this! I would definately get a second opinion and try the other clinic. Make sure if you are expected to lose that much weight, that you ask for a food and exercise plan that will assist in you getting there. Like someone else said, make sure their program includes a nutritionist and physiologist that can help you work through your eating issues. You need a solid support system around you including your surgical team. In the meantime it sounds like you lost 76lbs last year. How did you do that? Most of us have no problem losing the weight, it is keeping it off where we fall down. It sounds like you have experienced this as well. I would work really hard to move to a high Protein low carb diet now. It will only prepare you for what is to come. Also like someone else said, if you are drinking any calories stop that now, you won't be able to after surgery and many times this is where a lot of weight gain comes from. I know you can do this, you have done it before. Don't let yourself get discouraged to the point you give up, it will only cost you more down the road. I wish you the best of luck! I hope you are able to find a clinic that will give you the support needed for a successful surgery and recovery. I will say a prayer for you!
  17. Well anyway - I love Mexico. I like to go on vacation in Mexico, have opted for surgery in Mexico, and oh how I wish I had some of the corn on the cob with red pepper that they sell on the street in Mexico. I once saw a man pick up an orange, cut it in half, and fill up an 8 oz. glass with juice from that one orange in Mexico. It was delicious. I have never been mistreated, harmed during surgery, nor have I ever been afraid of my surroundings. The doctors and nurses that I encountered in Mexico were very informative, professional, and they did their jobs. I was a chunky girl most of my life. Lose weight, gain it back. That was the story. I chose Mexico because I couldn't qualify under my insurance at the time and I didn't have the outrageous amount of money they wanted if I just paid outright. I got exactly what I asked for in Mexico and they charged me a price I could pay. I love those guys. This time tomorrow I will be 49 years old. I will walk out my door in the morning and not look like a larda**. And that is thanks to my Dr in Mexico.

    January Sleevers ❄️

    Congrats on the first 5k! Hey, those are the days you can see weight go in the wrong direction and still smile. When you exercise so much more than normal, your body demands exactly what it needs. Sure, you could have found better ways to eat, and hopefully next time you will, but just doing that activity is a huge accomplishment. You may take an extra week to lose the weight gain, but your body will be better for it. Stronger, more muscular and better apt to lose in the future. My brother is a bike racer and told me that all the cyclists agree you never lose weight during the race season. It's just too hard contending with what your body requires. But it's during e offseason that the racers get so thin they can fit into toddler clothing. What I take from that for my exercising is I don't expect to lose much on my most vigorous workout days. But it's exactly those vigorous days that set my body up for big losses on the more normal workout days. Two weeks ago I went on a monster ride, over 60 miles with a mountain. I burned almost 5000 calories, but only lost 0.2lbs that day cause of all the food, salts, power bars and shot blocks I consumed, not to mention a glass of wine that night. But in the two weeks since that ride I've lost 9lbs. Sure, I exercise daily, but 500-1200 calories usually. And I've been good on my food intake. But I personally think that huge workout day jump started my body to burn more calories and that's why the last two weeks have been so prosperous. I'm planning another huge days soon. Anyway, my point was, congrats on the 5K and don't let the immediate weight response mean more than it should.
  19. I am 13 months out from surgery (at goal weight) and frequent the BP boards for the exact reasons you stated. I agree that it is way too easy to become relaxed once you are at maintenance and let old habits creep in. I find "checking in" daily helps me with accountability and even though reading the same posts over and over again from the newbies about hair loss, Protein intake, incision care, the best Protein drinks to buy, Vitamins making them sick, etc. gets really boring after awhile, I'm also reminded of the rules over and over again that I should be following that I sometimes have become relaxed on! Reading these posts and sharing my experience helps keep me on track! I help them to help me! Sadly, it becomes all too common for those of us farther out from surgery to abandon the support of these boards. I think that is a BIG MISTAKE. The reality is there IS truth to a honeymoon phase. There will come a time were you will stop losing weight. There will come a time where you can eat whatever you want. I chuckle every time I read a post from someone who just had surgery worried that they can hardly eat anything. Now with that being said, I can now sit in a restaurant and eat like a "normal" person but my new normal is far from where I was pre-surgery. I know how big my new tummy is and I don't try and eat beyond it's capability. I still get a full feeling after eating 3/4-1 cup of food. Certain foods now make me feel sick (sandwiches) so I avoid them. I didn't come into this process with food addiction issues (PCOS contributed to my weight gain) so I had one less thing to make the process difficult. With that being said, I even find old habits starting to creep in. My tendency not to plan meals ahead of time and eat on the go was a biggie for me. I was finding myself eating out more than a few times this past week. These extra calories will add up over time. I'm being extra vigilant planning meals ahead of time this week. We all need to take a look at what contributed to our weight gain. Especially those dealing with food addiction issues. It is common to substitute one addiction for another. What I can say, is losing weight has been the easy part in this process for me. I was able to get to my goal weight without issue. What I wasn't prepared for was the process I would go through in accepting my new body. I still view my body with a fat lens at times and its only when I see myself in photographs that I realize how much weight I've lost! Anyway.... Welcome back! There's no judging here. The fact that you came back and made your post shows how committed you are. I applaud you for sharing your experience with others. Let the newbies learn from our mistakes. We will continue to pick ourselves up and carry on. This is a ongoing journey that never ends. We are all here to support you. ????

  21. Many straws! I would say the one that made me pick up the phone to see a surgeon was dieting for the 100th time, and gaining the weight back. Again. For the 100th time. Other "straws"- 1.) starting to have heart palpitations and occasional chest pain. Cleared by a cardiologist....but it still gives me anxiety. 2.) losing 100lbs on my own and gaining it back. 3.) wanting to have a 2nd baby, but too scared to be pregnant again at this weight. (Lots of pregnancy/delivery complications related to weight with my first baby). 4.) loving to socialize, but always dreading seeing family I haven't seen in awhile during the holidays and wondering if they are judging my weight gain, how I eat, etc. I just want to go to family functions and enjoy! 5.) being too big to fit- in everything. The regular sized BP cuff at the doctors office, seats in airplanes, restaurants, and theaters, etc. 6.) not having enough energy for my 2 year old and my stomach being too big for her to sit comfortably on my lap to read a book. 7.) my father and grandfather had heart attacks/congestive heart failure and my father has diabetes. Poorly controlled diabetes. He has constant issues with foot sores. I do not want that life!!
  22. Ok I know I shouldn't be stressing this right now but I need to know. The day I went in for surgery I weighed 311. The day I came home I weighed 316. Last night (day 6) I was down to 305. I weighed this morning and I weighed 309. I am averaging about 32 ounces a day right now. WHY AM I GAINING WEIGHT?????

    Weight gain.

    Hang in there and tell yourself you can the fight against weight gain. You probably need to go back to the prep diet for a week or two and keep a food journal and even see a dietician. Don't give up you did not go through hell and back for nothing you can do it. Best of luck
  24. HAVE YOU GAINED WEIGHT AFTER YOUR SLEEVE. Hello everyone. I haven been on this forum for quite a while. I was sleeved back in June 2012. I had the lapband revision to sleeve. So far I've lost 45lbs give or take. My starting weight was 216. I lost my first 20 very quickly but from there on its was like pulling teeth.LOL. Anyhow a year to the day I had emergency gallbladder surgery and had to stop working out for a few month, gained a couple of pounds I was able to loose them again. For the past year and half I had endured Iron infusion for my low iron and hemoglobin. In December my OB/GYN decided I needed a total hysterectomy had the surgery done December 19 again had to stop working out and again gained roughly about 10 this lbs I haven't been able to loose it. I'm very worried and upset that I will be gaining more and more. I'm back working out and I'm very careful with what I eat and nothing scale won't move I know I haven't lost inches either because my clothes still fit tight. Everyone keeps telling it's because of the last surgery and that I look fine. It's sad because I don't like what I see in the mirror. And upsetting because I've put my body through so much and I don't want to be I vain.

    Frustrated and Pissed off!

    Continue what you're doing and try not to let what the scale is reporting discourage you. Lesson learned here from someone almost 13 months out at goal weight BUT if I was to do it all over again, I would have changed my strategy. I noticed early on post WLS that my weight loss would slow down every time I exercised, so I didn't exercise the majority of the time post surgery. I reached my goal in no time but I was left with a skinny fat body. I am now working out harder than ever and building muscle. This process is actually making me GAIN some weight which is kinda freaking me out, but my muscles are becoming lean ad strong. I'm losing inches despite the slight weight gain as I build muscle. In the long run having that muscle will help us both look better and let's face it, exercise will be vital in maintenance. Keep it up. You are on your way to an awesome, toned, healthy body!
