Thanks! It's been since my pre-op, April 17th

    Recent VSG peeps...

I had surgery Tuesday and was back to work the following Monday. I work from home at a desk job, so physical exertion wasn't an issue. What I wasn't really prepared for was how tired I was. That first week back I had to take a nap every single day. If you can, make sure you just pad in time for breaks/rest.

    Recent VSG peeps...

I am three weeks post-op and I took five days off. I wish I had taken seven or eight days instead. Day six was the most difficult for me (I think I swallowed air) and I could have used a few more days of rest after being off pain medication.
  4. I am 9 weeks out today and while I haven't quite had those issues, I can understand the frustration. Most shakes turned me off and I was over ricotta, yogurt and all things similar during pureed stage. I don't really feel physical hunger (it's mainly mental), but I know I have to meet goals so I make myself eat. The only thing I will not do is eat every 3 hours when I feel like I can't really handle it. Since the tummy can only hold so much, it's easy to get over the repetitive foods. What I have found that works on some days when food isn't sounding great - I drink protein water - Protein 2O is the brand. It has 15g of protein and comes in a variety of flavors. I also cannot stand the sugar substitute aftertaste or overly sweet and this one does not have any funkiness to me. It helps meet goals when i don't want solids and am over milky shakes. Since sweets aren't your thing, have you tried Quest products like the Protein chips or cheese crackers? It's more snackish while still being high in protein and decent in stats. A bit lighter than meats to get in protein. I'm sure this phase will pass at some point, which I hope is soon.

How long did you take off from work? I have my pre-op appt with Surgeon next week and am curious how long you gave yourself to go back. I work remote so won't be too taxed. Thanks!

    Vaping and WLS

Thank you so much! You are absolutely correct! I went in for consult yesterday and my surgeon told me it doesn’t necessarily matter if I gain or lose during my program. I am just wondering why it’s different for everyone, even if they have the same or similar insurance. But it relieved my fears. He said I have to quit vaping about 6 weeks prior if I remember correctly. Thank you for the kind and encouraging words 😊

    traumatized by puréed

ugh pureed stage traumatized me too. on first day of puréed stage i blended up some beef. yes, it looked as bad as it sounds. i took a whiff if it and wanted to barf. then promptly threw it in the bin. was so off-putting i didn't eat for the rest of the day. *shudder* i decided i would just extend my full fluids stage another week and went straight to minced stage afterwards. no harm, no foul.
  8. I can be picky at times, so I get it. I have been writing down things I will be able to eat after surgery at different phases. I will share what I have: First couple of days will be clear liquids such as water, Gatorade/Powerade, sugar free popsicles, decaf tea and coffee, broth or bullion, protein water. After that will come the pureed stage, where you can enjoy things like skim milk/almost milk to make a protein shake with, strained creamy soups, sugar free puddings, Greek yogurt (no chunks), mashed potatoes (soupy consistency), sugar free fudge & fruit bars, cream of wheat (soupy), sugar free ice cream, applesauce with no sugar added, and anything you can puree like baby food such as fruits (non-citrus) and veggies. You can make protein pudding with sugar free pudding and protein shakes. You can make something called Ricotta Bake. I found the recipe on Pinterest. Sugar free whipped cream with sugar free pudding mixed. You can also get unflavored protein powder to add to these foods to get your protein in for the day. Cottage cheese blended smooth. After a couple of weeks, you can graduate to a little more texture like runny scrambled eggs, egg and tuna salad, soft cheeses, refried beans, mashed bananas, etc. I find a lot of useful recipes on Pinterest. This is the guidance from my nutritionist so yours could be a little different.
  9. Almost 5 weeks post op. Occasionally I will start dry heaving or retching. Not necessarily after eating or drinking either, it almost feels random. This happens 3 or 4 times a day usually. I don’t actually throw up, I’ve only puked once or twice post op. Is this normal? It really sucks.
  10. I don't have a surgery date yet but thought I would share what my requirements were. I had to have 3 consecutive PCP visits for medically supervised weight loss attempt. 1 nutritionist and 1 psych visit. Smoke/nicotine free for 2 months, EKG, Chest x-ray, and an endoscopy (so he could look at my hiatal hernia). This was all required before it could be submitted for insurance approval. Turn around on insurance approval is around a week or so. I am going to the beach mid July, so I am hoping for an August surgery date (fingers crossed!).
  11. Puréed foods have traumatized me 😣 When my doctor advanced me my first meal was mashed potatoes and they were fantastic! I went on to try some salmon but in the blender and it was the worst decision of my life. The texture was that of a milkshake and it was ABSOLUTELY disgusting. I never want to experience blended food (besides a green smoothie) ever again in life. Also, tried the ricotta bake but it was only good for a week before I was over it. So I'm technically still in puréed stage but I'm doing a mushy soft foods instead because I cant with blending food.... I guess I've advanced myself to soft solids (the #1 thing you're not suppose to do 😬) but I've been feeling good and I chew it up really well. Rotisserie chicken mashed potatoes mashed curry chickpeas mashed green beans I do know when when I'm eating too fast though: I feel the pain when the food stacks right in my chest and its passing thru my small opening little by little it's hard to breathe What I think is the "foamies" When this happens I just get up and walk around a bit until it has all trickled down into the pouch Thanks for attending my Ted Talk!

    Stalling every 2-3 weeks

Yes as @Hop_Scotch says, anything your body does is normal. Try and stay off the scale. It is really flummoxing to stall early on because you always believe you are doing something wrong.
  13. Without knowing your pre-op weight, its difficult to know if 50lbs is typical or not for 7 weeks post op. If you were on the lighter side pre surgery, 50lbs would be way too much and given your walking you may be lacking in calories (way less than typical for post op), and are losing a lot of lean body mass (muscle). Your body could be struggling to cope?? Perhaps talk to your doctor sooner than later.
  14. Is stalling every 2 weeks normal? I know stalls are normal, and I do expect it, but this much? It's super frustrating. I get a good rhythm of weight loss, then BOOM, nothing. This is my second stall since my May 1st surgery.

What to expect at 3 months?

You are all so lucky. I got hunger back almost right away! I struggle with being really empty feeling...then overfull. I know what parts are cravings (which are bad too) but hunger is present. I don't know what to do. I'm 3 mos. out and lost 40 lbs but that's after gaining a couple lbs back this past week. Any suggestions? How many calories should I focus on and how often does everyone exercise. I walk for an hour/hour 1/2 5 times a week. I usually get over 10k steps.

    Bypass vs Sleeve

I agree. I think it depends on the person. I had some pain during the first few weeks, but nothing unbearable. The biggest one for me was standing still. If I was walking, I was fine. Transitions from down to up or vise versa were not too bad, but there was some discomfort. The worst was in the hospital until all the gas was expelled. And during the liquid stage , I felt tired and weak; which is fairly normal. Honestly, the whole experience hasn't been bad. My RNY was May 1st. Just keep doing what your team has advised, and if the pain doesn't go away, let them know.

    July 2023 buddies

Hi, @NYCxCoco! I understand the stress of insurance and rescheduling and testing. You're strong for sticking with it through all that! I also had my first meeting with my surgeon and dietician in March and feel like it's been a looooong time. Yes, I'm with you on being excited to have more energy! That's a great "why" to keep at the forefront of my mind. I'm grateful to have a very supportive manager at the library where I work and to work for a company that honors FMLA. I just told my manager I was having surgery and would need 4 weeks off for recovery. She didn't ask what kind; she's very respectful of privacy. She told me which person in human resources to contact about FMLA leave. I emailed the HR person and she sent me the paperwork, some of which I filled out and some of which my surgery provider filled out. I went with 4 weeks because that's the higher end of the recovery period, and I have plenty of sick and PTO time to cover it. I figure if everything goes super well and I feel good to return to work after 2 or 3 weeks, then I'll give my manager the good news of an early return; which is better than saying I'll need 3 weeks then having to push it back to 4. Hope this helps! How did yesterday's testing go?

    1 year post op sleeve

Track your food, even just for a little while to get a real strong understanding on what is going into your body right now. Take it one meal at a time. If you "mess up" acknowledge it self address and try again the next meal. It was the BIGGEST thing for me to learn through this. Previously, I would be like "Whelp, I already screwed up the day might as well go to town" and then pig out all day... and then it would become...."Whelp.. the week is already ruined might as well start back up on Monday"...and so on.... In one of my pre-approval classes this actually came up and our Dietician made a point to talk about this. It was hard really.. it IS hard.. but it does work. Honestly it was probably the thing I took away from all of it, I already knew all the nutrition stuff. Another thing I learned is stop eating because it is there, for example if I make a wrap the ends suck. (haha) all wrap or a clump or wrap and sauce.. I would eat it anyway because it is "the wrap".. part of my meal.. but why? It doesn't even taste good. So, I starting to stop. It sounds SO little, and sometimes it is one bite less but when you are trying to maintain 1200 cal. a day that bite makes a difference. Or the outside crust of bread (because YES I eat carbs... my plan is very balanced) I will eat the center with all the yummy stuff and leave the outside even more than just the outer crust but the outer part of the actual bread too. I don't know if this helps what you are asking, but just some tips I learned through this to stay on track and train myself into new/better habits. best of luck!

    Bypass vs Sleeve

You had your surgery on the 7th? So not quite a week ago which is very early days. This is major surgery, so it can take a while for the pain to ease and we all heal at our own rate. I felt like I'd been hit by a bus for a good two weeks. Can't say if it would have been the same if I'd had a sleeve, but the Mini Gastric Bypass/ Omega Loop is a shorter operation than the RNY but still took me a while to recover.
  20. I don't think anyone here can give a definite yes or no. For me it's not that I'm hungry as I've said before. I just miss the social eating and snacking while watching tv. 5 days in on liquid. Fam had takeout today. I had 1ounce cups of Powerade and chicken broth. The only thing keeping me sane right now is researching and planning for my pureed food next week.

    Drinking..not sipping

One of my concerns about WLS has been taking sips vs gulps, especially since I typically need extra fluids to swallow pills. I appreciate this post and all the feedback. I hope I fall into the category of being able to drink more water, although it sounds uncommon. In March during an upper GI where they ruled out Barrett's Esophagus and reflux issues, they dilated my esophagus. Two weeks later my esophagus returned to its previous slightly narrow state. I was cleared for surgery - my choice of either sleeve or bypass, so that's good. I plan to get some chewable supplements, but the extra gulps would certainly help. (Sleeve surgery scheduled for late July.)

    Any CrossFit peeps?

For the most part, just scaled down a bit, but not as much as what you are having to do. For example, we did a workout last week with thrusters and shoulder to overhead with an RX of 95. Those two movements were something I was pretty good at before, so I would have been at 95#, but last week I was at 65#. Today we did a 1 rep ****** EMOM @ 75% of max. I did 105 and that was just right. I probably could have done 135/145 before. Where I have noticed a huge drop off is dumbell weight, I struggle with some pretty light dumbells nowadays. Hopefully we will both be more back to normal soon. And finally, FANTASTIC work dropping the 160 so far, how much of that was pre-surgery?
  23. Hi all, I’m about 7 weeks post RNY surgery and have been getting some sharp shots of pain in certain areas of my body as I’m losing weight. The pain is mostly around the armpits down to the upper breast- burning pain shooting for a few seconds when I lean forward or twist a certain way. Another new place is the back of both arms and now a new place, near my groin. They don’t last long but they reoccur pretty regularly. I’ll definitely talk with my doctor about it but wonder if it’s a result of quick weight loss ( I’m down 50 lbs from my pre-op weight) and if anyone else has experienced something similar. I haven’t started weight training but I’m walking a fiendish amount. Thanks for any thoughts on this…

    Any CrossFit peeps?

Yes. This exactly. This is exactly how to explain it. I've been back for a few weeks and I just feel... bad... when I'm moving. I'm not particularly tired afterward, but as soon as I'm moving it feels like I've got a single glycogen molecule to share amongst every muscle in my body... which probably isn't that inaccurate. I spend a lot more time mid-WOD staring at the barbell and just contemplating my life choices than I used to. Not that I'm using a barbell, because I've had to take my weight essentially down to zero, less than a third of what I was lifting before. PVC-filled-with-sand, very light dumbbells and the cutest little baby kettlebell are what I'm using. Are you still working with actual weight @Lipman?
  25. Lipman

    Any CrossFit peeps?

A little late to the party. Got to start back up 3 weeks post surgery. Doc just said to take it easy and listen to my body. I have already noticed an improvement in my running, and I am able to get a couple of pull-ups with the heaviest band help (which I wasn't able to do before). The one negative thing so far is that I feel worn out from the starting bell. I told a buddy that it constantly feels like round 5 of a hard 5 round workout all the time. My endurance isn't bad, I just suck wind the entire time (for example, today was a 14m AMRAP, I got 2 rounds in the first 7 minutes, and 2 rounds + 45 reps in the 2nd 7 minutes). So I can still work out for longer periods, but I get winded almost immediately. Hoping that part sorts it self out soon. However, I am just so excited to get back into the gym and see my peeps again.
