Hi there, wow what a weekend 😃 went in on Friday down 20lbs, went up 2lbs after surgery, and down 2 when I was let out! Had to have my gallbladder out due to stones and I certainly didnt want to go back for another hospital stay. Pain on incisions and pain in my back due to horrible hospital bed and a bit of nausea. Im so very thankfully for that as I was expecting horrendus gas pain but all I got was lots of burping! The main bit now is getting liquids in and thats all Im doing for the next few days. I get weak pretty quickly but ive had chicken soup and a coffee and not had any issues with them so thats a good thing. Im off for a small yogurt smoothie with some protien in it. Good Luck to everyone going today, I wish you all well 😃

I ate 5.5 oz of vanilla Greek yogurt and it took about an hour to eat the whole container. I did not rush. I enjoyed every bit of the yogurt. I made my husband two pieces of salmon for dinner and lunch and then had a small bite of the salmon I cooked for him. I chewed the salmon until it was mush and then some. The fish was so good. I still had back pain after I ate both the fish and the yogurt. it did feel good to eat real food.

Difficulty with Pre Op Diet
CrankyMagpie replied to MissTimeIsUp's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon (not my insurance) wanted me to lose 10% of my starting weight before surgery. (I negotiated him down to "what if I do my best, but we schedule at the beginning of flu season, so I don't lose my surgery spot to the case of bronchitis I catch every winter?" And then, by a single pound, I actually beat his goal, anyway, on the day of surgery.) He makes all of his higher-BMI patients do that. I'm not sure how scientifically valid that extra requirement is, but he's one of the pioneers of the sleeve procedure and has done thousands of surgeries, so I guess he gets to cherry-pick for the most compliant patients. I felt like it was kind of cruel and unnecessary, for most of the four months it took, but honestly? In the last week before the surgery and the week since? I'm grateful that I had a chance to follow the "long-term bariatric patient" diet, with its focus on lean proteins and vegetables and fruits and (if those other things aren't filling enough, which eventually they won't be) complex carbohydrates. I learned that it wasn't especially hard, and I could follow it without tracking every bite (which makes me crazy) and without spending hours in the kitchen. I learned that there was room for "cheats"--for breaks from that protocol--and as long as I kept them to a minimum, with maybe a little stricter eating before and after to help mitigate it, I could be successful at following it and not feel miserably deprived. Now, like ... part of my problem is that I am always hungry (which is wild, when you're just a couple of days post-op; the belly gurgles, but it is lying, and oh how I hope this goes away soon). And to deal with that while still following the rules of the pre-op diet, I would do the normal things--drink and see if the hunger goes away, mostly--and if those things didn't work and it wasn't time for a meal, I'd have the smallest snack I could get away with, to stave off the hunger. Maybe it'd be a cheese stick. Or an ounce of peanuts. Or a Greek yogurt. Sometimes I could get by with just a sugar-free popsicle or a half cup of sugar-free Jello. It wouldn't make me full, but it'd take care of the hunger enough that I could focus on whatever it was I was doing. If that isn't the problem you're running into -- if it is emotional, say, rather than hunger-related -- my advice won't help much. (I won't claim not to have emotional eating problems. I definitely had some cheat days that were based around the news, for instance. But other than "don't do it often; be strong," I've got nothing for you, there.) I hope it helps someone, though? -
How long are your food phases?
CrankyMagpie replied to mooreva0725's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My program only refers to three phases--"puree" and "soft" are so close, anyway, that they just lump them together. Yogurt is considered phase II, not a liquid, so that's also a difference. They apparently let us start on phase II after the post-op appointment, 10 days after surgery. I'm planning to ask a lot of questions about what are the easiest foods to start with, then. In our booklet, phase II (puree and soft) is listed as "3-6 weeks," so I guess it varies a lot by individual. I'm not inclined to push things unnecessarily, so I am just going ahead and planning for 6 whole weeks; if at my 1-month post-op they say "you need to try phase III foods now," then I will, but I bet they don't push it, either. (But then, I can live on cottage cheese, ricotta, yogurt, refried beans, lean meats, and mashed cauliflower for a pretty long while, because I genuinely like those things, which I get that not everyone does.) -
How long are your food phases?
Diana_in_Philly replied to mooreva0725's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
We did our classes pre-op, but our phases were about 2 weeks. Discharged on full liquids (yogurt, protein drinks, cream soups, etc.) Two weeks later, puree. Two weeks after that soft, two weeks after that full diet. (I was never so happy to see a scrambled egg as I was in week five.) Do the people who do the nutrition classes work with your bariatric team? My nutrition classes were taught by RDs who were in my surgeon's office so the program was continuous. In fact, they went through the stages with us during a 4 hour pre-op special class right after we got our surgery date talking about the pre-op and post-op diets. -
Feeling discouraged by trying soft foods. Eggs and tuna, were my go-to but every time I eat them I have to lay down for 30 minutes. I don’t enjoy cottage cheese, but enjoy yogurt and some fruits... but none of this is protein. So I’m going back to my blender... this is still my first 4 days of soft foods but I’m feeling discouraged. I’m sipping a homemade smoothie currently and feeling much better. Any other ideas?

Trouble transitioning from liquids to puréed food
Frustr8 replied to bettie.blue's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
OMG that's also where I feel the pain just before Precious Pouch starts to hurl everything back up. That said I would thin your Greek yogurt down with skim milk, and work your way up to full strength. Your new digestive system is still pretty tender, take it slow and gentle, you will have a lot time to eat the thicker and regular foods. Your tummy is learning its way also. -
Trouble transitioning from liquids to puréed food
bettie.blue posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m trying to transition from liquids to puréed food and feeling not so well today. Thinner purées like apple sauce are mostly alright but thicker foods like Greek yogurt can cause intense pain under my sternum because the air I swallow can’t work it’s way out. It’s breathtaking and stops me in my tracks. Is it too soon? I’ve reached out to my surgeon but in the meantime, do you have any input? I’m just worn out today and not feeling good at all. -
Intermittent Fasting Daily Menu/Results/Accountability
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Ok, well got my exercise in today. Yay!! I can breathe a little better, but it's definitely still goopy in my chest when I get my heart and respiration up there! And boy am I much more tired afterward. Like shattered. Completely shattered. Part of tiredness/exhaustion after exercise/exertion is common for me. I had hoped it would go away completely with weight loss and surgery, but it is looking like I'm stuck with the after-effects of chronic fatigue post-chemo/radiation. It sucks, but I've learned to manage it somewhat even though it does limit what I do. It's still MUCH better than when I weighed 287lbs that's for sure. Everything in life is relative. Today is an UD. I am doing a 16/8 IF and will have my first meal around noon, but am trying hard to get around 1000-1100cals in for the day with really strong protein at around 70g. I'm looking forward to eating lunch! LOL. I found these hatch chile turkey burgers at the HEB last week, so Mr. F had grilled hamburgers and ugly broccoli last night, and I had a hatch chile turkey burger with pico de gallo and ugly broccoli. Dang! It was delish!!! I felt like I was sinning, but instead, I kept the day under about 575cals and got in my protein too while doing a 16/8 IF. (Yesterday I did a DD.) And the best part about it? I didn't get nauseated within 30 minutes after eating like I probably would have with the higher fat beef. (I do pine for my beef, but it is not liking me so much these days...yet I still tough it out with occasional ribeyes with all fat trimmed away...) Lemme repeat for anyone stumbling upon this thread. IF is NOT difficult. As Dr. Fung says it's about what you DON'T eat, rather than what you eat (in it's purest form). But I like jackin' around with things and I combine about 3 different protocols during the week cuz it keeps things mixed up and lively round heah. And it amuses me. It's also still working for my weight loss. I'd been stuck and stalled when I tried to increase my cals to around 800-850ish area and now I'm having days where I'm eating 1000-1200 cals and I'm still losing. So it's a win win. Menu for Today: 1130cals; 73g protein; 52g fat; 39g carbs; 11g fiber; 28g net carbs; 17g naturally occurring sugars L-hatch turkey burger with BH lacy Swiss, applewood smoked bacon, avocado, greens, tomato, onion, cilantro and baby carrots on the side. (I'm using the turkey patty as the "bread" and sandwiching everything inside of it.) AS-yogurt/cott cheese/blueberries/walnuts/fiber cereal threads D-grilled salmon, asparagus, chopped salad with evoo dijon vinaigrette (homemade) -
My 7 weeks starts Monday, but I eat 4-6 small meals per day avg 100 cal per serving. I only have shakes now if I know I won't meet my protein goals or want to add some to my coffee (1/3 bottle with decaf coffee). 40cal, 10 gr protein My breakfast is often light and fit dannon yogurt 80cal, 13 g protein with 2 Tbsp of ground flax 70 cal Lunch Tuna creations 70 cal, 15 gr protein. 2 oz cottage cheese 40 cal, 8 gr protein 2nd lunch 2 oz deli turkey 12g protein cheese stick , 5 gr protein Dinner 2 oz chicken, 14 gr protein, cottage cheese 2oz 8 gr protein If I'm still short I add peanut butter or other high protein snack. I mix up my meals, but work day lunches tend to go tuna just because I don't have to measure. My daily cals are 600 - 700 pending day of week.

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion
iattcom replied to Ylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good morning everyone, I had RnY on 9/26 and have lost almost 30 pounds since my first weight in at the clinic. I am supposed to be on puree food at this stage of the game. I am not there. I am seeing my surgeon on Tuesday afternoon to hopefully be able to get some answers to why I am afraid to eat. I tried to go full liquids on the day I was supposed to and it took me 2 hours to finish my breakfast of coffee, 2 oz of thinned Greek yogurt, and 6 oz of protein shake. I know it was a bad meal as we are not supposed to drink for 30 minutes before or after we eat. The coffee was first and that was part of why it took me 2 hours to finish it all. I had the same thing for lunch except no more coffee and even then it took me 2 hours to finish my meal. For dinner I only finished the protein shake. I did have water through out the day and I also had off and on increasing and incredible back pain. I did not sleep well Sunday night and Monday morning I had to drive myself to a class. I went back to clear liquids on Monday because I was hurting so badly. When I got home I had explosive diarrhea, luckily it didn’t happen until after I got out of my car. I drank protein2o protein water with whey protein and my regular water for the day. That was the extent of my “food” for the day. I had finished the protein2o at about 7pm and went to bed at my normal bed time of about 11:30pm and then woke up at about 3:30am with what my surgeon’s nurse said could have been the dumps. I did a day of broth and jello and Gatorade like I had in the hospital and then tried the protein shake again. I am tolerating them well, I just have not add anything else to my diet. -
Yes! I feel like I’m behind all day but I’ve found that sticking with liquids and avoiding pudding, yogurts, etc. helps. I even add protein shake to my coffee. I only drink protein water. The only thing I have that doesn’t have protein is popsicles and my nutritionist told me today they count towards my liquid. It’s only 3-4 oz but if you have two you’ve already got one cup down. So I sip water and shakes all day and then make soup which takes me hours to finish but I prefer savory to sweet so I don’t mind cold soup since it’s breaks the monotony.

Yeah, I left the hospital on a "full liquid diet". I tried some broth and yogurt today and wasn't feeling either of them. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Not doing great in pre-op diet
BelleOfBatonRouge replied to sleevemebaby7781's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Currently on day 3 of 14 of liquid pre-op diet. Im full liquids now, 7 days out I switch to clear liquids. I actually always hated protein shakes, but the premier protein caramel and muscle milk protein shakes actually taste okay. In the mornings i mix a half packet of syntrax nectar with my oikos triple zero greek yogurt and it tastes pretty good, gives me 30 grams of protein, and makes me feel full. switching to clear liquids will be hard because the greek yogurt is saving me. I'm not excited about mixing protein powder with water. I feel like I am rambling and I do not remember what the point of my comment was. oops. -
September bypass buddies??
FaithandHope replied to MissPoodle's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm not allowed eggs yet at all. What has been added to my list is Greek yogurt without chunks of fruit, low fat cottage cheese watery oatmeal and mashed potatoes. All of these go down just fine no problems. Of course I can only have 2 teaspoons of them for now. -
Getting in your Protein w/o artificial sweetener?
MargoCL replied to Leia's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I rarely use protein shakes anymore unless I'm adding it to decaf coffee. I am getting my 60g of protein in daily, my surgery was 8/20 - It sometimes takes up to 6 meals a day, but it's doable. Tuna Creations has flavored tuna and salmon with 13-16g protein, coupled with cottage cheese - 20+ grams of protein per serving. Yogurt - Dannon Light and Fit Greek and Oikos Zero is 15g of protein per serving The idea is to now slowly ween yourself off protein shakes and move to more solid foods to get the necessary proteins. It's out there, you just have to not be as picky and accept this is for nutrition. My meal portions are no larger than 3 oz and are usually more so around the 2 - 2.5 oz mark. -
I have egg whites with crumbles sausage, sometimes yogurt Now that I think about it it might be because I’m not getting enough protein

Being wasteful.......
MargoCL replied to AshMarie794's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yes, I think you will find through a variety of posts that many of us over bought in preparation because we tested and liked something pre surgery only to find out post our new tummys were not as keen on the product. I sucked up the chewable vitamins for 2 months (1/2 pre op) and finishing the 2nd bottle now and have moved onto the the same brand (BP Multi once a day) in capsule form. As for the premade protein shakes, I divide them into three uses, and add 1/3 of the bottle to my decaf coffee, it seems to work. But I have 2 1/2 full canisters of whey protein powder that I'm struggling with as well. including a lot of other products I purchased thinking, "oh this will be great" - I am slowly depleting the items but I will have some for months to come without the need to purchase. As for cooking, I cook for 3 people, which is somewhat helpful so leftovers are minimal. For work, I've started buying the pre-sized / packed foods for lunches (Tuna Creations, cottage cheese, yogurt, chicken salad, hummus, guacamole, etc). They are the perfect size and I no longer feel like I"m wasting if I throw out a bite or two. I may spend a few cents more in the beginning, but for me it's all about convenience and the ability to not through away foods. I won't even prep and cook extra anymore, it's just not worth it. Your profile says you live in Michigan, I'm not sure if you have an Aldi there... but aside from the cottage cheese and tuna creations, I buy the remainder of my prepacked foods there). They have a great BBQ Pulled Pork and Chicken for $3.99 - it's package so you the sauce doesn't smother the entire meat so I can remove the sauce and just have the meat. For a couple dollars more, their pork carnitas are the bomb and super moist. They sell out quickly. I've learned to buy things that are more economical and tummy friendly. Fresh sliced deli meat (turkey especially) is a great soft food resource and if the grocery sales are in your favor, really economical. I too expected big changes with my belly and I should've listened to a lot of people that said don't over pack for the hospital and don't over buy for the post WLS because there will be a lot of waste... Hopefully someone reading our posts will listen and not go through what we did... -
How to Start Meal Prepping After Bariatric Surgery
MargoCL replied to Kristin Willard, RDN's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
For me personally, meal prepping doesn't work since WLS. I buy items that are pretty much perfectly packaged and sized out (chicken salad, tuna creations, hummus, guacamole, yogurt) so I'm not "wasting" so much food. Additionally I don't have extra space to meal prep and freeze. It may be slightly higher in cost, but the convenience and hassle of trying to find storage in already a small area makes it worth it. Unless it's leftovers from the day before, I find that it's much easier to cook daily for my family and not spend the weekends prepping for the week. -
Well I'm up late for a terrible reason. But I thought I should leave record of this because you don't see it on the boards often. I had VSG but I have the unfortunate side effects of dumping and late dumping possibly even reactive hypoglycemia. I need to confirm the later with my doctor the next episode. The very first time it happened or that I can remember, I was 4 months post of in Naples. I was taking a coffee and felt a wave of flush wash over me but it disappeared immediately. Thought nothing of it. The next time I was in Paris, Nothing out of the ordinary lol. I had a pettit croissant and then a spoonful of panna cotta and I thought I was dying. Not exaggerating. Room spinning, heart racing, sight failing all in french subtitles. Took an hour to pass in a highly ornate turn of the (17th) century bathroom. The next few times I was on home soil eating (safely/properly cooked) homemade curried chicken breast. Then roasted lamb, next a tossed salad , then means and even once Greek yogurt! But not dessert/pastries again? Whatever...I'm sure it will happen again Absolutely no rhyme or reason. Every time it happens now I can't predict why, when or what foods will cause it. Just tonight peanuts and salmon pate. My usual suspects. I nearly went to The ER, it was that bad but I passed out in bed. Well now I'm awake to tell the tale. So I maybe a unicorn, who knows, but if you are banking on VSG not causing dumping syndrome, you may be surprised...

My nutritionist made me add a 1more protein to my day since I'm very active. I am extremely "boring" with my food. I keep it boring and simple and have worked so hard to look at food as a fuel not as having to be exciting. So..... I start my day with eggs whites (14g), My snacks are 2 times a day ,small yogurts with 1/2 scoop protein powder in it (10g) . Lunch is yellow fin tuna or tuna in general (16g), Dinner Sauteed Shrimp(21g), and because I don't put garbage on my food (very plain) I have 1/2 a pure protein during the day (15g). That gives me about 76 easily. I have steamed broccoli typically with lunch and dinner. I'm up super early so my fueling starts around 6am and I'm done my last snack at 730pm ish.

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion
Svdlux23 replied to Ylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was suppose to be on liquids for a month. .l started on soft stuff week 2.. my body needed it. I was tired and had no energy. I eat what I want now mostly (no steaks yet obviously) and feel fine. Our mouth is a grinding machine so we are able to mush up food and grind our teeth as good as any blender. I just keep hydrated and don't eat too fast or too much. Maybe start with yogurt and soft stuff. We all have different plans but its more about how our bodies are working for us. Honestly, not even 3 weeks out and haven't had any issues since gas pain post surgery. Just don't overdo it. But makes you feel happier to have something in your mouth to chew for sure. I even had some salad last night and all was good. -
My sleeve was June 13th and I've had no real issues or problems, thankfully. But since Sunday morning I am struggling with getting my fluids in much worse than ever since my procedure. Every time I swallow it feels really weird in my throat like I've gulped a HUGE amount when I haven't and food made me nauseated when I would start eating. The nausea is better, but any swallowing (even little chunks of greek yogurt popsicle) is followed by that weird golf ball feeling in my throat/chest. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? Hot vs. cold beverages feel the same. About the only food that doesn't feel awful is scrambled eggs. This all began Sunday morning and Saturday night I ate grapes for the first time at a party. I also drank some alcohol. Just trying to put it all out there to help figure out what this could be caused by... Can a stricture happen at this point? Could I have gotten a grape stuck in my sleeve? Starting to worry!

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion
ellie123 replied to Ylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, have you gone meatless too?? I am a Sleeve to RNY revision. I've always LOVED meat and milk products and eggs and butter etc etc. All 40 years of my life I have never gone without it! And I ate it with my band, and with my Sleeve. So here's how the Vegan happened. My doc had me on clear liquids for 3 weeks with no diary...then told me to add back in eggs, and grounded meat. And I LOVE yogurt, milk, cream, Cheese OMG, on my last trip from France I had a WHOLE suitecase Packed with cheese from Hard to downright Stinky! I'm a certified Cheesaholic! But, I survived the 3 weeks without it, and without much veggies, fruits etc. But I was tired, and felt malnutritioned and unhealthy and constipated etc. Which is kinda to be expected. But seeing as this is not my first rodeo, I wanted to listen to my body more and not repeat the same mistakes. So...I started to educate myslef of nutrition nightly to see how best I can support my body through the healing process and nourish it while loosing weight. One profound influence was watching the documentary "What the Health" on Netflix (I so recommend you watch that!). So I replaced my morning Egg (s) with my Green Smoothie (which seamlessly incorporates my 1 a day Bariatric Vitamin chew from ProCar Bariatric health and the rest was history. Like right now, post my dinner, I'm not just feeling full, I'm feeling Satisfied and harmonious. Hard to explain but there is a difference. Like I said, I know it's not for everyone, but I'm super excited about the results, not just in the scales, so if anyone is cooking a vegetable or even a meat, I would love to be inspired. Because that said, it's not like I'll never touch another chicken or egg again, just for now, I'm doing so well without, trying not to tinker with the formula. Veggie or not, we need to learn how to cook again and enjoy a positive relationship with food again, but with Bariatric friendly healthy food, so we don't feel deprived and one fine day when we can eat more, start slipping into old habits. So were you Veterinarian before or thinking of becoming? Would love to hear more about your veggie meals. I try to post mine
