  1. Currently 50lbs from my goal weight and this by far has been the hardest journey of my life. I have been admitted into the hospital for severe Dehydration,  I have been well for a couple weeks an then BAM the last couple days back to feeling ruff... My gurd is controlled some times I dont need my heartburn meds other times I live on them. Im loosing slowly at this point but I consider that a blessing as I  have lost a lot very quickly in the beginning of my journey, I do want to feel better. I try foods that I would think would work well with my new stomach some times its a big fail 2 days ago it was avacado I hovered over the porcline god an prayed for releif as I sometimes dont understand, I often times crave carbs and Im trying to control my cravings but its so hard... My sugar tends to drop really low and that makes me very ill Im happy with my progress but often times think WTF did I do to myself, feeling down today as I just dont feel well at all :(

  4. I hope everyone has had a great summer and i hope you go into this holiday season from a better place than the year before.

This last week was my 30th wedding anniversary and i am happy to think that i will have many more to come. In the not so distant past i was not so sure i would live to see this one and 35 or 40 was beyond my expectations. Anything could still happen but at least i have stopped digging in my effort to get of the hole i found myself in.

I have made 3 life changing decisions in the last few decades.

    1. asking my wife to marry me - being a child of divorced parents colors your expectations about getting and staying married.

    2. saying yes when my wife asked if i wanted children - This was a lie at the time. having a child was THE most terrifying thing i could think of. Today there is nothing i would not do for my daughter and i feel a love  i did not know could exist inside a person.

    3. accepting that i could not control my weight by myself and getting this surgery to save my own life. Putting myself first as a way to be there for them is not a concept that I lived by before.

If you ever wonder is it worth it yes it is cause i was worth it and they are worth it.

    Never give up folks

Whatever you are working towards you have the rest of your life to get there.

Wow! What a powerful post! Thank you for sharing!! Happy anniversary and glad you're here with us!

  5. I'm going to hit my stall now. I can tell, because 1) almost everybody stalls when they start moving on to real foods, in addition to the liquids, and 2) I'm at 302 pounds, lol, and the scale knows I want to see the 2 in the first digit.

I'm fine. It's not going to freak me out or really even upset me. Honestly, I could stand the reconfiguration of inches that always comes with a stall, for me.

I'm posting here in between bites of refried beans, which (knock on wood) seem to be going pretty well for me, so far. I'm so happy. Between ricotta (with a little sauce and a little seasoning) and refried beans (with a very small amount of low-fat cheese melted in), I can live without chewable foods for a pretty long time. (I'm also eating yogurt and ricotta cheese.) I do want to upgrade to the ricotta bake, because it has better protein and might cut down the number of protein shakes I need in a day. It's probably a bit more firm than ricotta alone, so I held off at first, but I think it's time, don't you? Plus, my spouse can put it over pasta and enjoy it with me.

I'm eating 2.5 ounces of ricotta in a serving and maybe that much in beans? (this is my first attempt, but that's how much I served myself) I can eat 4 ounces of Greek yogurt in half an hour, which feels like a lot before the 2 week anniversary of my surgery. But I still haven't really figured out my body's "full" signal. I felt a little sick and stopped eating, one time, which made me think I'd overdone it. Other times, I just take tiny bites, sometimes a few minutes apart, for half an hour. And then I refrigerate or throw out what's left, because that was the guidance the nutritionists gave me. But other people talk about a sore shoulder or something as their signal, and I haven't found that yet.

I guess it'll come with time and practice.

    1. Orchids&Dragons

      Orchids&Dragons

Don't talk yourself into a stall. They're common, but not everyone has them early on. I honestly haven't had one yet. I've only had 3 "up" weeks in almost 8 months and none of them was from a stall. (One was from vacation, two were recovering from losing 13 lbs in 10 days because I was prescribed too much diuretic and ended up dehydrated in the er ☹️) You're unique, just let it go.

It is early for you to recognize a "full" signal. Pretty much all the foods you're eating right now are sliders that just pass through your pouch. Other than the refried beans, most of them won't stay long enough to trigger a "fullness" feeling. Don't worry, it will come. You're doing great!

    2. CrankyMagpie

      CrankyMagpie

If it's a stall, it's only in comparison to the ridiculous speed with which I lost during immediate pre- and post-op. I'm still down like half a pound from when I posted this. (Half a pound in four days is slow for this stage of the journey, but it's still good!)

Thanks for the reassurance! It's good to be told I'm doing well. ❤️

Yeah, we love that non-linear weight loss when we have a 4-pound week. Not so much with a 1/2-pound week. I only weigh twice a week (and only write it down on Saturday) in an attempt to keep the insecurity monster at bay 😉

I'm not sure how to update on an ipad, but you could post the question in the website help thread. Be specific about the type of device you use. Hope this helps and welcome!

  7. My surgery was Wednesday, and already, on Sunday, I'm feeling mostly human. I count myself very lucky!

I have been taking the nausea pills I was prescribed ("as needed" is what the bottle says) every morning, and I think that has helped me get closer and closer to my fluid goals. A pill is only good for 8 hours, though, so it isn't doing anything for me in the evenings, when I am still drinking fluids. Maybe I'll try to go without it tomorrow and see if I can.

Anyway, I'll hit 64 ounces for the first time today, my third full day home. I'm on track for 56 grams of protein, 57 if I go for Jello instead of popsicles, which obviously I'm going to do, now that I've said that.

With more distance, I'm able to report on something I've kind of glossed over in my other statuses ... I had some really rocky time while I was in the hospital. There were at least two hours in recovery where nobody checked on me, and my IV stopped--I felt very sick and dehydrated when they finally fixed it. (I was stuck in recovery through a shift change, and they wouldn't let my spouse back with me for something like 4 hours, because people's assigned rooms weren't ready yet, and not letting spouses join inpatient people in recovery is policy. That was terrible. My spouse complained to the nursing supervisors when he found out how I'd been (not) treated, and he never does that!)

Once I was in my room and had a working IV again, everything progressed OK. They didn't let me walk as quickly as I'd expected; I woke up the first time around 4pm, was in my room by 8pm, and didn't get to walk until around noon the next day, with the exception of trips to the in-room bathroom. The pain meds wrecked me almost as much as I expected (I feel like they added to queasiness, but I can't be sure; they definitely forced me to sleep, instead of really taking care of the pain, though, as I'd thought they might ... happily, the pain has been pretty manageable without them).

Home has been better. I've been pacing the main floor of the house roughly every hour. Once it cools off this evening, Spouse and I are going for a walk part of the way around the block, to see how that goes. (80+ degrees in October, ugh.) I feel a little lightheaded sometimes when I'm walking around, and I'm not sure what that's about. It felt enough like a sugar low, yesterday, that I dropped a single sugar cube into my tea (which my plan allows). That did seem to help. I haven't had to do it again today, happily.

Looking forward from here, I'm not forcing myself to go to class (3 hours, a half hour drive away) tomorrow or Tuesday night. The professor was nice, saying "you're the sort of person who would try, even if you feel bad and even though you're ahead on the material, so I am telling you to stay home." I feel like, if I keep on recovering at this pace, going to class the following week should be no problem for me, plus I should be able to work that Thursday and/or Friday. (I might ease in and try just Friday. Nothing I do at work is time-sensitive. I have a very unimportant job.)

I know from reading these forums, though, not to get too overconfident. So I'm still taking it pretty easy and focusing all of my energy on healing.

I'm sorry to hear how badly you were treated in the hospital - I was so lucky, the hospital I was at was obviously trying hard to provide amazing service.

How are you able to get that much protein during clear liquids?! Are you able to drink protein drinks already? Are you just drinking a lot of broth? I have just been drinking water and diet clear juice and trying to choke down a little broth. Tell me all your secrets!

I am glad to hear that you are doing so well, hope that walk is refreshing!

    2. CrankyMagpie

      CrankyMagpie

They told me I don't have to stick with clear liquids this week. They were like "maybe for your first day home, full liquids might be too much, but you should start them before too long; please get protein this week." At the nutritionist appointment before the surgery, the nutritionist went out of her way to say "the nurses might tell you you're on clear-liquids-only until your post-op, but that is NOT TRUE, PLEASE DRINK PROTEIN." And then she told us how miserable the people who don't get any protein between the surgery and the 10-day post-op appointment look when they drag themselves in, so that stuck with me. The nurses didn't tell me that, but I was glad that I was ready for it, in case they had disagreed with my nutritionist and my paperwork.

But if your nutritionist and all were like "just clear liquids," I mean, obviously, take their word over mine!

15 grams of today's protein were from a protein water, if you're looking to add protein without breaking the "clear liquids" rule. I'm doing OK with those.

I admit: I'm not drinking plain broth like I had intended to. I know it's good for me, but I hate it. I got myself some of the Unjury chicken flavored protein, and that tastes like chicken noodle soup, not like plain broth, so I like that OK. (It might? count? as a clear liquid.) And I'll probably split another can of chicken noodle soup with my spouse before the week is out--I get the liquids, and he gets the solids--because that tasted so good, pre-op. (It does temporarily drive my weight up, because of the carbohydrates, but that's bound to happen eventually--either it happens due to soup this week or it'll be refried beans and ricotta when I graduate to phase II.

Anyway! I'm really glad your hospital experience was better than mine!

  8. Wahoo for another 4 lbs. down this week!  Here is my latest update on YouTube:

  9. On day 3 of the pre-op liquid diet. As predicted, those days of low-carb beforehand probably made this all easier. I was foggy yesterday, but it could have been any number of things (the rain, chronic illness, low calories, or no caffeine). The hunger has been there, but not totally unmanageable (I say, having eaten 8 servings of sugar-free jello in three days, because that's on my "unlimited" list and it fills in nicely around the shakes). Maybe it's because I've been sleeping so much this week, though--I'm not awake long enough to be hungry 😂

I gave in and had one bag of caffeinated tea today. Don't look at me like that--my surgeon allows up to 16 ounces of coffee or tea per day, at all points during our program. I was only cutting it out because I don't much want headaches when I'm healing from surgery. I do, however, find that I need a little bit of caffeine to do my homework. Maybe not every week, but this week we're doing ... complicated things you all don't care about.

Cutting down from the amount of coffee I was having to one bag of tea is still something I'm proud of. And the headaches I get when I skip it are manageable enough that I'm not stressed about this one thing, post-op, anymore. (I maybe can't concentrate like I'd like to, but I can read and go on walks!)

Anyway, three days (almost) down, three more to go, then one of only clear liquids (jello, broth, and protein water), and then the big day! ... And then probably several more weeks of liquids only, but I'm not focusing on that right now. 😁

  10. I'm less than 320 for the first time in many many years. I honestly cannot remember when. The lowest I can remember being is 325 back in 2015, but less than 320!?! I'm just over three weeks post-op and I'm down a total of 64.2 pounds lost since June 29, 2018, when I first saw the surgeon.

Yes, it's definitely not intuitive. I will also warn you that posts about foods that you know you shouldn't eat sometimes elicit "over-the-top" responses. This is a religion for some people and they may not get that you were joking.

  12. "Wellness Week" at work free lunch today: Nachos. Like ... what? Who is in charge of this menu??

  13. Hit my first stall this week. I'm not horribly upset by it..I knew it was bound to happen. Still it's never super encouraging either. On the bright side my butt fits in our kitchen chairs much more comfortably than it used to.

  14. I was reminded today that I have posted in quite some time. I am doing great! I am down 102 pounds from my highest weight and need to lose 3 pounds to get to the doctors goal weight for me of 165. I actually want to get down to 150, but my family thinks that I am getting to skinny! LOL imagine someone telling me that! I have had some stalls and am guilty of weighing myself everyday, but so far so good. When I have a stall or that dreaded teeter totter of bouncing back and forth one or 2 pounds I just adjust my eating and exercise and I start losing again, it has not been easy. It's so exciting to be able to play with my granddaughter and hike and work out and not feel like I am going to kill over. I have also become a sounding board for people that are thinking of have the procedure and that feels good. Over all this has been a godsend for me.

  15. Hi Everyone,

I'm in my 3rd week post-op and have had a very rough time.  I am still on clear liquids as protein shakes and protein drinks make me hurl!!! I've also had a pretty bad case of the foamies.  I'm finding myself with terrible food envy.  Folks bringing their lunch to their desks is driving me insane.  However, today is the first day I feel like I will get all of my fluids in.  That's a plus.  And 30 pounds gone since pre-op is also a bonus.

  16. Stall is finally broken and I am losing again. Stalls suck but I understand them much better now. I am still feeling great and have kicked my workouts up a notch. I went to an arm/abs class that turned out to be all men and "me".  The dudes walked in with their 30 lb hand weights and I have my little 7.5/10 lbs and I was thinking to myself...what did I get myself into, and am I going to embarrass myself?  Well I decided to stick it out and although I couldn't do everything the dudes were doing, I did a pretty darn good job of keeping up and I am proud of myself for being able to stick with it. I decided I am going back again tomorrow and I am going to kill it again. I belong there too!

I'm embarrassed to say this, but I'm afraid to run. Scared to death that I'll damage my knees or break a bone in my feet. I don't know how far down I'll have to go before this isn't a fear for me.

    2. SleeveinIL

      SleeveinIL

I am afraid to run as well. My left knee is bone on bone but I had to try it and see if I could actually do it. I will not be doing it on a regular basis tho. The pain in the knee is killing me today. I have done everything but have a knee replacement and nothing has helped. Doc doesn't really want me to get one at my age. He says I am too young.

That sounds awful. And no ibuprofen. (I soooo miss my ibuprofen :()

I spoke with a co-worker today who was sleeved about a year and a half ago. She just started taking fairly large amounts of ibuprofen. I think she misunderstood the pharmacist, or maybe the pharmacist didn't know she'd had wls, but I told her that my dr. strictly forbade it. She googled it and now understands. I told her to speak with her dr.

  17. Correction on my surgery date: it is September 6th, not 4th. I'm currently doing the 4-week pre-op diet, limited to less than 800 calories with greater than 90g protein. I've got this!

do you have a vitamix? https://www.vitamix.com/us/en_us/Recipes/Tortilla-Soup?referer_st=&sc=recipe

This one is very tasty. You can use this recipe regardless of whether or not you have a Vitamix. You can cook the ingredients on the stove top and mix it in the blender to smooth it out.

I do not have a vitamix, nor will I be buying one after seeing the price! Ooooof! I have a Kitchen Ninja system that works fine and yes, I can cook the soup without needing to run a mixer for 6-7 minutes to "heat" it up... Thanks for the recipe - I think I can modify that with foods I like and can eat. I appreciate it!

  18. Three and half weeks out.  I have lost 34 lbs and I have currently hit my first plateau.  I was advised I am eating to little food and currently light headed.  I have no hunger pains.

I see my surgeon on the 11 of august for my two month appointment.  I am fortune enough to have Bariatric counseling three days a week and PT twice a week. I am finding this really helps

    1. nibble

      nibble

That's really rapid weight loss, Joe!

I'm curious, is the 3x week counseling and 2x a week PT part of your program's standard plan, or something you decided on for yourself? My program has optional personal trainer sessions you can buy, and counseling sessions you can purchase as you wish to make appts for. You can also buy extra sessions with the NUT. The one "freebie" we have is the monthly support group sessions.

    2. Joe78260

      Joe78260

The two programs are optional, however insurance covers it.

  19. Three months post-op today and I'm down 54 pounds. My A1C, which was 10.8 a month prior to surgery, is now at 5.5! Plus, I have gone from a 5x to a 2x :) Just broke the 250 mark, and can't wait to get to Onederland!

    1. Orchids&Dragons

      Orchids&Dragons

      Congrats, you're doing great!

  20. Going crazy worrying about whether I need to do the 6 months program with UHC.  Its been a week and no call from a case worker.  in my certificate of coverage booklet it doesn't say anything about it. I have the choice plan.

  21. I broke my stall this week! Yay!  Also, I started Mederma for scar therapy.  Here's my most recent uploaded video on YouTube:

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbuuDYlSs34YW3hukTKxlrA?view_as=subscriber

  22. Tomorrow is my last dietician appt since February 22nd.  She said they would be able to schedule my surgery date tomorrow but it seems as though everyone says they have to wait on ok from insurance co. But I already know my ins pays 100% of surgery and my hospital copay is $430, so hopefully I'll know date real soon. I also know I have to do 2 weeks of pre op even though I've lost 20lbs on my own just from making changes! I've been on every diet there is and lost but always had problems keeping it off. My health was deteriorating quickly and I need to turn this around before it's too late. And permanently.  I've never been more ready physically, mentally, spiritually for this as I am now.

    1. Orchids&Dragons

      Orchids&Dragons

Hope all goes well and they schedule you quickly! You've got some awesome insurance! Between copays and deductibles, I hit our out-of-pocket max which was around $6,600! Beats self-pay, but still!

  23. So the doc wants another week before i try lifting again and then only light weights for another week after that.

i don't know how much of this slow healing process is me just being an old **** or if my post op diet is slowing things down or hell maybe Tricep tear just takes along time to heal.

I do know i dont want to do any damage to it again. Not being able to do much of anything with your right arm is a pain in the ass if your right handed.

well me and the wife and daughter are off to Reno for a family reunion this weekend so that means lots of vegan food (daughter)  sigh

i will weigh in real early in the morning and post my Saturday  update if i lost any weight this week.

need 4 more pounds before August 1- will have my 1 year follow up with surgeon in first week of August

Hope everyone has a great weekend and i'll be back monday to rant and rave against the evils of added sugar and processed carbs. :)

  24. Down another three pounds and had my one-month post-surgery follow-up (although its actually be 7 weeks tomorrow, their scheduling sucks). The nurse practitioner was pleased with my weight loss (36 pounds in 7 weeks) and told me I was cleared to go back to water aerobics and whatever else I would like to pursue exercise wise. Now to find a new pair of tennis shoes :)

    1. Orchids&Dragons

      Orchids&Dragons

      36 pounds - that's awesome! Congrats!

  25. Me and the Scale have been having a staring contest this morning cause i want to weigh so bad it hurts but i know its a bad idea so i am trying to hold out.  I get this way every time i am at a threshold. in this case the 179/180 crossover. based on last weeks weight i should cross over to the 170's this week.

I have  only weighed 170 anything for 2 years of my adult life. oct 1984 till sometime in 1986 when i crossed back into the 180's

well i got the windows and doors open wide and the birds are singing. It is a California Classic today - for those poor souls that have never enjoyed one it is mid 70's to mid 80's and a slight breeze that just begs you to spend the day in the sun.

Now come August when its on its 27 day of 105+ i will be bitchin and moaning to no end :)
