liquid diet questionS- 5 days in.
Bypassjourney replied to BrookeTiffani's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have made up 2-3 servings of the Protein powder shakes and stored in the refrigerator for the day. They seem to be okay. But I wouldn't go past the one day. -
You can have coffee and tea pre op - they tell you to drink decaf, but confessed that the only reason is because caffeine is a diuretic........pp11150330, mine will not allow milk pre op even tho I can have up to 4 protein shakes a day (with very specific limits re fat/protein/calories etc). I chose Premier Protein and have to be honest, I'm on day 4 of clear liquids (surgery is Friday) and my energy is fine, and I have not wanted to gnaw my arm off. LOL

After surgery.. how long are you down?
FunnyDuddies replied to Arkgl01's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was up walking the halls within an hour of my surgery. I got my kids back (3 and 4) about 4 days after surgery. I would say a week would be good for you, but only as long as you really do take it easy, rest a lot, get your protein and water, and let yourself heal. no picking her up for at least 4 weeks. I have trouble just lifting a 10 pound bag of cat food right now without having pain. And i don't want to tear out my stitches. -
What can I do to help you?
ProudGrammy replied to Suzannesh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Newbies et al Suzanne is a lovely lady from sleeveland that lost 115 lbs!!! in 2008!!!! proving that there is life after many years of WLS!!!! what an inspiration she is!!! periodically she"pops in", showing her lovely slim self always smiling she's a great role model!!!! she was 62 when she was sleeved (I know she doesn't mind me saying her age) i only mention her age to show "older" people (like me )I was 57 when i had WLS - that its never too late to start your new healthier, happier, longer life people that have been sleeved a few weeks, months - we've all heard the same question comments from NEWBIES they are repetitious - telling their poop stories LOL - hair following out - Protein shake problems, STALLS et al they are good questions, we've said, asked them before - so now its the NEWBIES turn to ask them, since they never heard the answers most of us can remember asking those questions when we were NEWBIES too i know if 15 months ago i was referenced to use the search bar on hair, it wouldn't be the same as someone giving personal help on the board (its true that after someone gives a response checking the search area is helpful) so NEWBIES............. here we are - ask away!!!! any and all questions - go for it!!!! just remember, another NEWBIE might just have asked that question ie yesterday, so you might not always get that personal response i would like to also tell you NEWBIES when you introduce yourself - there are so many of you NEWBIES we don't get to individually welcome you just know even though we don't address each and everyone of you we all welcome you to the VSG board with arms open - on your successful road to "heaven" in sleeveland!!!! Suzanne, thanx for reminding us that all of us are here requesting support even when NEWBIES confess they ate something bad,,,,,,, we need to be there for them - but we also need to tell them to knock it off!!! if they do something wrong!/silly like eating 4 slices of pizza PO day 4!!!! not a good idea guys!!!! so newbies try not to be offended if someone "unintentionally" might not show their best side with a reply we're all usually the cream of the crop, here to help you the best we can but remember we'll answer your questions to the best of our capability but frequently you need/should check with your NUT/surgeon if its a more serious question about a possible leak, stricture et al for many things you must seek your doc/Nuts advice Suzanne, sounds like you are continueing to do great!!!! thanx for stopping by!!! - would love to see you more often welcome NEWBIES kathy -
Hi Butterfly. Not to worry. Everything will turn out just as it should and you will be fine. It won't be easy, but is anything ever????? I also have BC/BS and had to go through the whole psych visit, 3 visits to the dietician/nutritionalist, provide 5 yrs. of weight history, etc., etc., etc., but I got approval rather quickly. I started the liquid protein diet on Wed., and that's all I'm allowed (well, water as well), but I do have one cup of coffee in the morning. It's a challenge, but so far, so good. I don't know how much I'm expected to lose, but I think 20% of the total lbs. overweight? My surgery is on the 14th. Good luck

meford replied to Angelap's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Does anyone take protein supplements? Would that help to get my protein in. I am 11 days out and only getting half of my protein in. -
I am 7 days out and when I left the hospital the nurse said I could start phase lll (puréed foods) so I have been eating baby food, apple sauce, jello, and pudding. I can't stand the taste of the protein shakes anymore So I am not getting my daily dose. I am afraid I am going to eat something that I am not supposed to have. Can anyone help me I don't know what to do.

ProudGrammy replied to kristikay's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
kristikay i'm full of that!!! - (encouragement silly! ) Realizing you need to get back on board (accidental pun ) telling yourself - and your fellow sleevers your situation it took courage to do that - I see you are "full of it" too!! as OP said, and will in the future - go back to basics Protein shakes (gag, gag ) but you should start there you'll get lots of necessary protein track anything and everything you put in your mouth - even if its that one m&m drink, drink, drink and then drink more eat your healthy chicken, fish et al portion control used to be my biggest weakness measure your food - be accountable to yourself with MFP i know, i know, you fell off the wagon (hope you didn't hurt yourself ) you have been successful - good for you you have such a pretty, smiling face - (its contagious!!!) I can see it in your eyes how much you want this!!! the determination, et al many/most/all of us have slipped up a bit but i see you are proudly standing!!!! all set to go forward!!!! good luck bud kathy congrats on your weight loss -
Getting banded in 9 days---- start pre op diet Thursday... Will I miss pizza and bad foods that I gave up.?. I began protein shakes and like them

Hello all, I am 10 days post op and was excited when my doctor approved me moving on to Phase 2 a few days ago. Phase 2 for me is pureed foods such as puréed oatmeal, cream soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes, etc. Unfortunately I take about two bites and I feel very full. This fullness lasts for hours and I can't take anything else in. I am thinking about going back to liquids to be able to get all my protein and liquids in. Is this to be expected every time I advance to a new phase?

How do you handle work?
SarahS replied to Fleur de lis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I usually have turkey sausage for breakfast. I got tired of eggs, and I don't like cottage cheese or oatmeal (things my NUT suggested). I asked her about turkey sausage and she said its fine. Its really filling and I usually eat 3 links or 2 patties. I think its under or around 140 calories, 7 g fat, and 9 g of protein (I think). Maybe try that if its something you like. I also tried turkey bacon and turkey pepparoni, all which are yummy. I put those on a thin tortilla and make pizza...yum! Just a thought. Right now, my snacks are protein shakes. My NUT still wants me on those 2 times a day, and 3-4 meals. I am not working right now and I am worried about going back to work as well. Good luck and congrats on the new job! Keep us posted on how you do. -
You are not alone. I was sleeved 12/17/13 and from the minute I woke up I had sever nausea. This lasted for 6 weeks straight. I had to go to an infusion center 2 times for I.v. fluids due to sever dehydration. I tried 4 different anti nausea medications and 2 different antacids with out any success. Finally on the 6 week mark I was put on aciphex for my acid and started eating solid food. Up until this point I could not tolerate anything, even water. The only thing I could now stomach was ruffles potato chips with american cheese melted on top. Not ideal to say the least but it stayed in and gave me a little energy. After about 4 day of that concoction, I started eating other things and slowly came back to life. I still can not seem to get in enough water or protein I also wish I would have known nausea was a real side effect before having surgery however if I would have known how bad I was going to have it, I probably would have chickened out. The only bad thing is that, as soon as I started eating, I stopped loosing. I dropped 40lbs in that first 6 weeks. Since then I have lost 2 more pounds but that has been in the last couple days because I finally felt well enough to exercise. Having gone through it, here is what I recommend: Puke and ralley- drink water even if it come out to avoid dehydration and having to get fluids through an I.v. Eat what you think you can stomach even if it is carbs. At this point you need to recover any way you can. Make sure your acid is under control with medication. Hang in there, you are most definitely not alone but it does get better.

Ms skinniness replied to strgazr's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Are you taking a PPI (prilosec, omeprazole, nexium)? u may be having acid in your stomach that is causing you to feel hungry. I had the same problem until people on this site told me and I took some, and low and behold, my hunger went away. Some of it may be head hunger. I try to get alot of protein via shakes other protein sources. I try to get at least 90 to 100gms. then i do veggies. Also drink alot of water......... -
Band to sleeve revision?
breepad08 replied to breepad08's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
The band is awful! I can't eat any protein without it coming up no matter how small or how much I chew. I'm not gonna lie I have been reading some really bad things about the sleeve and it makes me nervous that it's a newer procedure. I'm glad to hear your doing well with it. Did they take the band out the same day? -
it will be interesting to see how my surgeon differs from what the nurses were telling us in my Options classes. My surgery is supposed to be July 15. I've got to get busy losing weight before then. Also gotta find my paperwork and get all my tests done before then.

Finally Saying Hello :)
TransformerOfYoungMinds posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have been lurking on these boards for months, and finally decided to create an account a couple weeks ago. I am a 31-year-old middle school teacher who has battled weight problems since 3rd grade. Five years ago, I lost over 60 pounds on Weight Watchers, which I loved!!!! The point thing was so easy, I was working out like a madwoman, life was great.... until my father, who I loved more than anything, died unexpectedly (heart attack, diabetes, sleep apnea-- I have no idea... my mom did not want to do an autopsy). Over the next 11 months, I also lost my dog (who I adored), my great uncle, my uncle, and my grandfather (my last living grandparent). Needless to say, the weight came back on, and then some. I battled depression during this time, but came out on top. My father's death inspired me to do what I love, so I went back to school and got my teaching credential. Last year was my first year teaching and it is the best decision I have ever made. I went back on Weight Watchers earlier this year, and got down to 289. At this time, i began researching WLS. One of my co-workers got the lap band, so initially I wanted that as well. I even went to an amazing seminar (Dr. Billy in Ventura, CA). His office said I need to contact my insurance, which I did. My PCP referred me to the Options program though Kaiser. I went to my first orientation, where the sleeve was mentioned. Since that day in May, I have researched tirelessly online while (not so) patiently waiting for my first Options class at the end of July. Thanks to all of you amazing posters, I am truly looking forward to this journey. I am hoping to be sleeved in November while on my Thanksgiving break from school. You have all been so informative.... I ordered unjury Protein powder, a blender ball cup, and picked up a bunch of sugar-free Torani syrups at Smart & Final. Had my first Protein shake for Breakfast this morning (Unjury chocolate Splendor and Water with a little bit of the Chocolate and Salted Caramel sugar-free Toranis)... it was great!!!!! I just wanted to introduce myself and thank you for sharing your experiences......I am so motivated to begin this next chapter of my life. Sleeve me!!!! Allison -
My doc says to keep total consumption of all food to four ounces. That said I would go with two ounces of protein at a time and add a little vegetables. I had a band for 7 years before the sleeve and only did two ounces at a time all the time

I'm a little more than 9 mos out and am pretty happy with the progress that I have made and the good fortune that I have had in terms of avoiding major complications. I am continuing to struggle with some food aversions that are beginning to concern me and are making it difficult to eat a varied diet. It started with chicken, which the mere thought of eating is completely revolting to me. I'm also increasingly feeling that way now about things like shrimp and pork. All of these are things that I liked before surgery. Making matters worse, I have never really liked fish, so I'm starting to run low on types of meat that I can readily eat. I still consistently hit my daily Protein target, but that is largely with the help of things like Protein Bars, Greek yogurt, small amounts of cheese, and things like chili. I've mentioned this to my nutritionist, but she has not really had any advice apart from emphasizing the importance of eating a varied diet. Has anyone else dealt with something similar? Were you able to do anything to improve things?

Sweetie333, Please list your doctor's full food program--I don't understand what you are allowed to have if you haven't been allowed a protein/ water supplement until a month out. I have no idea how he would allow mashed potatoes, a carb, before he would allow protein water. That being said, I would not be following what I consider, as a person who has followed diabetes diets for 35 years, to be really sucky nutrition advice from a doctor unless I had a great understanding of the why's behind his diet choices. Some doctors have no real knowledge of diet issues/nutitrion. I would be questioning him about the diet immediately and then be researching this issue and seeing someone else. What kind of experience does he have as a sleeve doctor? Does he have a support group for patients and can you check with them as to their experience with his diet? Sorry for the rant, but I can't understand his reasoning at all.

Let me first say, you look amazing! Keep up the great work! I was sleeved in February and at about Month 3, found my appetite really getting larger. I am still eating a lot of protein 4-8 oz per meal but lately also saw a jump in my carbs. I got pretty lax over the past week (holiday cookouts) and didn't exercise as much and ended up gaining about 5 lbs. everyone is different so I would suggest just monitoring your macros to make sure your staying in the right nutritional zones set by your doc. And make sure to keep moving.

I'm on day 3 from being sleeved and I still feel very nauseous. Is that normal? I keep getting this gurgling sound in my throat/mouth and it makes me feel like I want to vomit. I feel like I can't even get my protein drinks down without wanting to vomit.

I have not yet been approved for surgery through insurance, but if I do, I will be having Dr. Jeremy Korman from Marina Del Ray. I am sure they will give me a packet when I have been approved for the procedure. He also told me they do have support groups and classes. I just like to do my homework and have all my information understood and ready to go. Here are some questions that I have probably heard the answers to but have forgotten them in the turmoile of all of this. Viatmins? I know we need certain supplements after surgery - how much of what? food? I know we should never eat sugar again, so most of you eat whole now? Protein shakes? Is this what makes up most of your nutrients? Should they be sugar free? How many people have failed even with surgery? I know this is touchy, but it is reality. Thanks
