    Seeking a buddy

Hi. I’m one of those bad stories and let me be the first to tell you it doesn’t happen to everyone. My mom had the RYN surgery about 12 years ago and she lost a significant amount of weight and has maintained a decent weight all these years. I had the gastric sleeve surgery on November 28,2017 and I got sick about 2 weeks after I came home. And it went down hill from there for me but all my complications came from the flu and not from the surgery it self. So don’t let the stories of people having complications scare you, it happens. There are a lot factors to consider too when getting the surgery. Make sure you listen to everything your surgeon is telling you and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Especially to the surgeon they are there to guide you through your journey. And make sure you’re family is well educated on what surgery you get as well, it helps a lot. My dad learned with my mom and I what he needs to do in case of emergencies and also what we’re allowed to eat and what we’re not supposed too. He held us accountable for what we ate and it helped with our weight loss. And you’re allowed to panic, it’s scary. Don’t be afraid tho. Also the support groups helped a lot as well and having this BariatricPal page helped as well. One key thing I will say is make sure you get your daily protein and vitamins! Very important! And feel free to message me if you need someone to vent to because surgery is hard but it’s easier with people in your corner. Goodluck! And I wish you the best!!

    Hypoglycemia after Bypass?

I have the sleeve but, I do have reactive hypoglycemia. For me its a minor complication after surgery. It's manageable with nutrition. I also distance run. I have to balance things out so my sugars don't get too low. I have no regrets having my health back. It's great that you are doing your research and evaluating all the possible risks and complications before surgery.

    Brachioplasty from He$$

I did the 360 body lift and vertical thigh lift the first round... no major complications, but there was a deep hole both front and back that I had to pack with gauze and took a long time to fill in and heal. Next up is the moobs... but I don't want the long horizontal scars so I'm looking around to see if there is another option. I don't understand why they can't do a lift and raise with the main scar in my armpit, but my surgeon says that he can't do it that way. I haven't scheduled anything and probably won't if it means big scars - I'll just live with the extra skin.

    Seeking a buddy

Hi. Brand spanking new to the WLS arena... my first class is 4/27/18, so my surgery will be sometime late this year or early next year. I'm planning on RNY bypass - that's what was suggested because I am diabetic and have multiple comorbidities. The support groups at my hospital are on Monday at 330! Good grief, people have to work lol Anyway, kind of looking to replace that if possible... I started the process back in 2013, panicked after my 2nd support group meeting where I met 2 ladies on feeding tubes from complications, and have just now regained my nerve. So... hi! 8. Hey Everyone, Just needing to get thoughts out there. I'm a revision from band to sleeve. I've had my band removed and hopefully I will have sleeve surgery this summer. I'm going through all the motions for insurance approval. The time between is giving me alot of time to think. I'm excited for the chance to finally lose weight successfully. I'm excited that maybe for the first time in my life I may possibly fit in "normal" size clothes. I'm excited that maybe....just maybe....with the weight loss I can maybe have children. I'm excited for the opportunity to not ache, not tucker out so darn easy, and just feel good for once. And I'm also scared.... I'm scared of failing. I felt like a failure with my lap-band (even though I did have issues with it, even my surgeon said he won't even put them in anymore because of the complications many lap-band patients have), but I can't help but be scared of failure because I've failed so many times with trying to lose weight. I'm nervous too... I've never been "normal". I was a 10 pound baby...so I've been fat since birth. I have no clue what it's like to be what you would call normal. I don't want to say thin because I don't desire to be thin, I just want to be at a healthy weight....and I have no idea how that feels. I was a fat baby, kid, teen, and now adult. I have no real idea what life will be like. I know it will have to be better than how I feel/look now, but the unknown is scary. Thankfully my husband is very supportive, but I get nervous that he won't want to be with me anymore if I do lose alot of weight. He assures me that he doesn't care what size I am because he's in love with me, not my body (smart man...lol) but I can't help but have these fears since we began out relationship with me being the fluffy gal that I am. Sorry for the long post....there's alot rolling around in my brain. I know that surgery is the best option for me, my doctors have been very encouraging, My mind just like to run emotional marathons....too bad my body hasn't. haha. Reading through the forum has always been helpful and encouraging. Anyways...thanks for listening to my ramblings.
  9. Hi there, So i had a lapband put in in 2009, had inital success with it for the first 4years, then the problems started... Food kept getting stuck despite having fill taken out, i had CONSTANT SEVERE left shoulder tip pain, and left side stomach pain to the point it hurt to breathe and i couldn't function etc! I Lost around 50kilos in the time i had the band! i was happy til i was in constant pain and vomiting all the time! I couldn't even get greek youghurt down in the end. I started to gain weight back because i could only eat crap & slider foods. It was so frustrating! I decided although i was apprehensive to have my band removed (in November 2017) and im currently back to my pre banded weight almost! Im crushed! i have a 2 year old son who i struggle to keep up with & want to be a fit, healthy, happy Mumma to him! SO....... I've had a consult with Dr Brendan Ryan in sydney to discuss my options for revision! I originally leant towards a Sleeve, BUT in my research & medical advice i now see that RNY or MGB is best for me success wise & for maximum weight loss! So iv chosen MGB & im suddenly frightened! Is this op going to work for me, will I WORK WITH IT & BE SUCCESSFUL!? Will i have complications, & massive vitamin deficiencies, what about future pregnancies (Dr said i could have a baby again but have to be monitored closely etc) What about having a social drink etc (i rarely drink but like to let my hair down a few times a year) I think im overthinking but im also a worrier & scared im making the wrong choice..... Those who have had revision from Band to MGB please share your stories, Pros & cons, Success with MGB etc I need to know these are all normal thoughts?????

changed my mind about the lapband

I agree that you shouldn’t settle on something. It’s a big decision. I had a lap band and thought I did everything right. My band tilted and I couldn’t get anything but liquids down. Sometimes even that was challenging. I’m being sleeved after having removed my band last summer. Some people do great with the band. Others struggle and have complications. I would not recommend the lap band because of my personal experience. Do what’s best for you. Do more research and talk to your doctor. Good luck to you
  11. I’m one week out from surgery and my husband and best friend are making menhavwbsecond thoughts. They have no idea they both agree. My husband says I’ve had enough surgeries during my lifetime from car accidents and complications post car accident. I’ve also have a history of sepsis (infection) every time I get opens up for surgery. He know what I went through with all that.ni think he’s just afraid of what could happen or me not pulling through this time ans my friend said likewise. I really and and nee this surgery but now I feel like I’m second guessing myself. My initial plan was to have the sleev but the doctor takes me into duodenal switch because it’s less likely for weight gain. I agreed but also has second thoughts about that particular lad surgery just because of all the additional nutrients you malabsorption va the other surgeries. In my head I was also think duodenal would allow me to lose weight faster than the sleeve. Then again i don’t want to loose too much I don’t want to be looking too skinny from excessive weight lost from duodenal (CW 232 GW 150-160). Although not reversible the sleeve is less invasive and not switching around parts. Then again I’ve had a gastric ballon (obera ballon) and maybe lost 10 pound at most so that was also my reasoning for wanting duodenal switch more aggressive than sleeve as to me the obera balloonMimics restriction just like sleeve but it’s temporary. As you can see I’m a week out from surgery and all over the place. HELP!!! Has anyone that is slightly obese or obese who has extremely hard time losing weight even with diet or excercise had success from the sleeve? How fast did you lose weight?

  14. Hey all! So, mandatory "I'm new" greetings to you all! *waves* I'm not very experienced with using forums, and I'm very early in the research phase. Sorry in advanced if I say/ask something silly >.< Wasn't exactly sure where this goes, so I just plopped it here. I am making a list of doctors I'm considering (while I am looking to doctors in Mexico, I figured it's a decent question regardless of location. Maybe?). My plan is to write out certain characteristics/stats/etc and then how different doctors compare in each category. If that makes sense... To the question! What would you consider to be the most important things to ask a doctor before you proceed with him/her? Things like: number of fatalities (if any), instances of infection/complications, bougie size, etc. Research is a bit overwhelming, but I'm trying my best to at least say I made the best decision with what I have. I like lists, graphs, and charts. And oxford commas. Thanks!
  15. I've attached photos from my booklet. Part of the enhanced recovery was for me to be an outpatient for surgery. So I had surgery and then was released within a few hours after surgery. My surgeon said the program is meant for patients to have less side effects and complications and to heal faster and be able to eat sooner. Sent from my SM-G935P using BariatricPal mobile app

    Today is the Day!

I arrived at San Diego airport at 9:30am, had a text from the driver soon as I stepped off the plane informing me that he was outside& in less than 10 mins I was in the vehicle heading for the border. We arrived at the hospital by 10am, I met with the coordinator, made payment, completed paperwork, underwent EKG & bloodwork(they got my vein on the 1st try:). I met with a doctor who reviewed my health history. Shortly thereafter I was told that they were ready for me. I was escorted to preop, given a gown to change they put on circulation stockings.A little after 12p, a nurse took my belongings for safe keeping. I then met with the anesthesiologist, she went over my health history, explained what was going to happen and answered my questions. I was given an IV with relaxation meds then was escorted to the operation room. I got up on the table & started to feel loopy, the anesthesiologist was there making small talk & before I knew it I woke up in the recovery area. The surgery was performed laparoscopically without complications per Dr. Lopez-Ortega . He said that there was scar tissue present, he removed some of the tissue/adhesions in the area and said everything went well. The nurses were absolutely amazing & I never used my call button because they were so attentive. I must say that I have NEVER experienced or witnessed this type of phenomenal, high quality, compassionate care. If I made noise readjusting or sitting up in my bed the nurse was at my door asking if I was ok or needed anything. I had no issues with pain & never had to ask for meds because they were given routinely on schedule. Tuesday, I was given a blue concoction to drink to test for leaks. Later that evening, I was given apple juice & bottled water. Yesterday, my drain was removed, I was given post op meds, & was discharged from the hospital. The driver took me to a clinic for my 2nd leak test. I was given another gross concoction to drink & X-ray images were taken to ensure the liquid was flowing properly. The tech gave me a copy of my test on a CD & informed me that there were no leaks. Afterwards, I was taken to the hotel to check in for additional recovery. I was informed that I was allowed 3 bowls of broth, 2 bottled waters and 2 popsicles per day. Today, I am feeling no pain or discomfort. This is my last night in the hotel & tomorrow morning I’ll be heading home. I am so happy that this part is over & I’m looking forward to getting healthy, losing weight, and getting back to the gym “Dointhis4me”

    I'm New...

Hey there, I had 2 abdominal surgeries approximately 15 years ago. Scar tissue and the fear of having open surgery scared the crap out of me. Needless to say, I was sleeved on Monday 4/2/18 without complications. I’m 2 days post op and currently recovering in my hotel room
  18. They might and might not detect it on the endoscopy. Mine wasn't detected and it was huge. Probably the result of bad falls off horses..or crappy genetics...or a combination. Don't worry...it's not complicated to repair and most bariatric surgeons have a ton of experience fixing them if you do happen to have one. Piece of cake. No worries.

    February bypass buddies?

Hello too all my skinny friends hehe .... I say skinny because we are all smaller than what we started but let’s get to the point STATS ( not doing so hot but I have been following the rules and doing as best I can overall I am truly excited about my results) HW: 298lbs SW: 262lbs CW: 233lbs GW: 170lbs (1st big goal) I am feeling blessed and thankful. No major complications. My favorite thing to eat is deli spicy turkey and I know fruit is of the table but I do suck on an orange for flavor once in a while and omg delicious to me. I hope everyone is well... well to conclude my Wednesday... I have lost a total of 29lbs .... yay me! Yay you! Yay everyone.... keep head up high we can do it...
  20. I have had the lap band for 9 years and it does not like my body any longer and has to be removed. I did very well with it but because of the complications of the band it has to come out. My surgeon said because of my issues he would do the bypass but I refused and it was the sleeve or nothing just get this band out of me. How many of you have went from lap band to sleeve and have you experienced any issues. How many of you were sorry to do either. I just want experienced people. No I didn't fail my band. No I did not go off my diet. Yes I followed all the rules to the T. My band is just old and needs to be removed. They have found that at ten years the band has an 80% failure rate. I am really unsure if I want to do another weight loss surgery.
  21. Thanks. Did you have any complications? And how have you been feeling overall?
  22. I just spoke with my nurse who was giving me the Toradol. He came from a large Bariatric Center. He said they used it all the time. Ok asked if there were any complications from it. He said that they had to stop it on one patient who had a bump in the BUN ( kidney function) but that was it.

Sorry to hear about the complications. I had surgery that same day too and am so over the liquids. Sent from my SM-G935P using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. I was wondering if anyone here had a near death experience after they got the surgery? I’ve been having a hard time dealing with mine and just wondered if anyone else had any complications or issues post op.
  25. Actually, that's not true at all. It's not that insurance companies don't want to pay for procedures, it's that they don't want to waste money on unnecessary procedures or on members who will not follow up properly. With bariatric surgery, insurance companies know that paying for this surgery is less expensive than paying to treat all of the complications that will arise if obesity goes untreated, so it's really a win/win situation. The reason there are so many obstacles leading up to the surgery (particularly the pre-op diet and psychological exam) is to ensure that the person is a good candidate for the surgery and will stick to the proper regimen for weight loss then be able to lead a healthy lifestyle afterward. They do not want to pay if the person is just seeking a shortcut for weight loss and does not plan to change their lifestyle. I've been in healthcare for 32 years, 12 of them at health plans, so I'm quite familiar with their operations. At a previous job I used to help scour data for signs that members might be pre-diabetic, so that the plan could reach out to them and see if there's anything they could do to help, whether it's recommending a nutritionist, sending them videos or literature, whatever it took to get the members to improve their lifestyle before they developed full diabetes. It's certainly better for the plan's members to learn how to take care of themselves, and it's much cheaper for the health plan to not have to treat the member's diabetes. So again, a win/win.
