    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Ok. I wonder if it's too much too fast. I know all programs are different. I had my surgery the day after you and I am not allowed to eat what you're eating for another 10 days. Like eggs are Stage 3 for me. And Stage 3 happens at 3 weeks post surgery. Basically, one week post surgery you are allowed to eat purree which I wonder is just too much for your new tummy. For me, surgery April 6, I had one week of clear liquids. Then starting on Day 8 after surgery, I transition to full liquids which is called Stage 2 for us. I stay on that for two weeks. I dont move to Stage 3 which is limited soft foods until 3 weeks post surgery. Again, all programs are different. Lots of folks talk about their different programs on here. But, I just wonder if your healing tummy is not ready for that kind of intake that you are introducing now. Plus, stage 2 in my program is only 1/4 cup which is 2 ounces of anything on our really tiny list that is not thin liquid. I think a half cup that you mentioned eating now might be 4 ounces. Might be a tad much for your healing tummy.

    April surgeries

Literally joined here 30 seconds ago.. my surgery is 27th April UK. My 10 day liquid diet started yesterday.. I did not realise how much "water" I would loose so quick.. last night I went to toilet 3 times in half hour..
  3. So I haven't had surgery yet (5/10) but I have been having some anxiety and worry about the upcoming procedure. My therapist suggested I create a "worry/anxiety time). So each day I have a specific time to explore those thoughts, journal them and confront them. If I have the thoughts outside of my scheduled time, I tell myself "nope, can't deal with that now, have to wait until...". More often than not, it calms me in the moment and I usually forget what was making me anxious. She also told me I should keep separate journals for separate feelings. So my FIL passed away last week and I have a lot of feelings and worry about that which is a completely separate issue from my anxiousness about surgery. It's like compartmentalizing each item. I don't know if those will help, but it was some suggestions I got from my therapist. Hope they help. Jennifer Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. I’m starting my 10-day pre-op diet tomorrow and was given a worksheet to eat only specific foods during this time frame... it seems very limiting they don’t list sugar free jello or popsicles but allow certain canned fruits. They also allow for chicken but no fish. Were others pre-op diets similar? I know this diet was created to shrink the liver and stomach prior to surgery but was just curious to hear others experiences...and to see if anyone has any advice. I feel that the next 10’ days will be very challenging!
  5. The lap band prevents me from eating healthy foods like fruits, veggies, and lean proteins. It does NOTHING to stop me from eating slider foods, though, so I've actually gained weight with the lap band. I regret not doing bypass in the first place but I thought the lap band would be a safer choice since nothing was cut or removed. I was wrong. People have complications/issues with the band WAY more than with any other WLS, and far less success. I know some folks on here have had success with it but they're in the minority. Most doctors aren't even doing lap bands anymore. My doctor said he takes out way more bands now than ever before because they were popular 10 years ago but are failing. I'm converting to bypass soon... can't wait to get my surgery date!

    Cardio or Strength Training?

@Soon2bFit21 so do you think cardio is better in the beginning while calorie intake is lower? I'm also contemplating this question. I'm about 10 weeks out. I can only get in about 700 cal on a good day.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Do you mean that you cant sleep for more than 2 hours in any position at all OR just not in your preferred position? I was not sleepy at all the first or second night at home. I propped myself up with pillows in bed and slept just a couple hours. Not due to pain, but just not sleepy. Then hours increased as the days went on, but it wasnt due to incisions. I actually didnt feel anything from my incisions. I did have some discomfort if I tried to sleep on my sides or if I laid down flat too long. But, it was more like internal discomfort and stomach discomfort, not external incisions. Now I am 10 days post surgery. I can sleep on my right side comfortably. NOT on my left though. And that seems opposite of many people on here. Also, my biggest incision is on my right. Seems odd that I feel more discomfort on the left when sleeping. I can sleep all night sometimes, but other days I wake up and have to walk or shift in bed. Like prop myself up.

    Ideal body weight

my surgeon didn't set a goal weight. He just asked me what I was hoping to weigh and I said 199 lbs. At the time, that seemed like a pipe dream to me - I couldn't believe that came out of my mouth. And I was even more shocked when he said that should be do-able! I actually went far below that - at one time 138 lbs - and even though I bounced back 10-15 lbs (as many of us do after hitting our lowest weight, unfortunately), I'm still well below 199.
  9. Our weight loss tends to be "front loaded" with a chunk of water weight loss when we first start a major weight loss effort (figure 10-15 lb) Most people who have a pre-op diet will see that big drop when they start it; those who don't have pre-op diet will see that big drop soon after surgery; those, while those who lost it during a pre-op diet are often disappointed that they don't see a bigger loss immediately post-op. If you are doing an earlier diet than the week or two diet that many surgeons impose, then you will likely see that big drop when you start that, but less, if any, when you start the formal pre-op diet a week or two before surgery. And, you are right, that if if were easy for you to lose, you wouldn't need the surgery, yet some, but certainly not all or even most, surgeons have this type of requirement lose X lb or % before surgery, or at least threaten to do so (guess they think that it is in incentive for you to "try your best". Good luck,
  10. I did it!!! Thanks so much everyone. I did a 27 min walk on the treadmill I burned 137 calories and I just finished another 10 minute at home workout!
  11. I lost 10 pds in one week of liquids before surgery.

    Hi, everybody!

4/16 was the one year anniversary of my first appointment with my surgeon! It ended up being a zoom appointment since Covid had just started. I ended up with surgery on 11/10 and I’m 122 lbs lighter today than I was a year ago. Honestly the six month process seems so long but it flies by! Then suddenly they are scheduling your surgery and it’s like wait...this is actually happening!? I’m still losing at 5 months out, with another 52 lbs to go to goal. My best advice is 1. Start losing in the six month preop time unless it would impact insurance eligibility. Every pound lost now is a pound you don’t have to lose after surgery. 2. Start dealing with any food issues you can early on- surgery will force you to cold-turkey some of them like binging or eating nonstop sugar, but dealing with the mental side of that at the same time as surgery recovery would be tough. 3. Prepare yourself to rebuy an entire wardrobe. I was excited about the thought of it until I realized things like I had to buy all new underwear and bras and everything else, not just cute and fun stuff. And it’s expensive! 4. Your mileage may vary, but this is the best present I’ve ever given myself. It’s amazing to be able to free yourself from a lifelong problem that affects every part of your life. Where you are a year from now is going to be incredible.
  13. Hi Well I have booked my surgery for next month so it looks like I will be spending an additional 3 nights in a quarantine hotel, then have to take another flight to get all the way home. I am not looking forward to this delay, the extra cost or the additional 10 days quarantine once I arrive home. That being said since it is so uncertain when things will improve and remain I did not want to delay longer. Definitely adds another layer of stress onto the situation. Will you be moving forward with your surgery??!!
  14. I didn’t have to do nutrition classes so I don’t know this. Will your pre op diet be within that four month period? I ask this because most people lose like 10-20 pounds on the pre op diet if they have the two week one. I wouldn’t count on it since you have already lost weight but I also wouldn’t give up without considering that as a possibility either. If that makes sense.

    Loose skin in 40’s

I lost about 75 pounds 10 years ago in my 40's and unfortunately did have loose skin I was a mess and I ultimately got a TT and breast lift. But that doesn't mean it will be the same in your case!!!
  16. So I finish yesterday my first day of full liquids my date will be May 6..so I am still have a long way to go... My question will be how much water weight or weight loss you have during this step. I been reading it could be 10 or 20... Sent from my SM-N960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. Well, I just found out my surgery center requires a 5-10% weight loss during the period of the nutrition classes, so it almost doesn't matter. I don't know how I'm going to lose 5-10% unless they count the time since I first called them. I've lost 8% of my body weight in the three months since I called them.

    Newbie

Hi Lizzy - if you like we can stay in touch. I just had my surgery on 3/31 so about 10 days further along. I check into this site daily as I have found the people here are amazing and so willing to share which helps so much. Here anytime for you!
  19. Not sure what you are doing when working out but don't set the bar too high. Try to start walking each day. Start with a 10-15 minute walk then the next day match it and the day after maybe add 5 more minutes to the walk. I started this way and can now walk 20-30+ minutes at a time without being too winded. Let yourself build into it. Try walking listening to music or a good audio book. If you have the room in your home and don't want to walk outside yet, consider the purchase of a treadmill. You can watch TV and walk:0 Just a few thoughts and whatever you do - don't get down on yourself.

  21. I’m gonna sound like a terrible WLS patient with this but- ice cream, baked lays chips, rye chip gardettos, or everything pretzels dipped in cream cheese. However, I’ve had 3 intestinal surgeries in a year (dec 2019-dec 2020; VSG, RNY for GERD, and a small bowel resection losing 3ft of small intestines) and I find that some days I’m pretty short on calories to keep me in maintenance and I’ve usually already hit protein goals (100g+ daily) so good quality ice cream it is.
  22. Hi all! Just joined today. I am just starting the process w Kaiser (south Sacramento) and am hoping to find others that are doing the process (or already have) My referral was put in this week, and I was told it could take a couple of weeks to receive a call from Bariatrics Questions I have : Can I start losing weight NOW while I wait for the call? I’m mentally ready and want to keep my momentum going, but I don’t want to lose , say 10 pounds on my own and show up w a lower BMI and get turned away. Will they use my highest weight (this week the day of my referral was my highest weight EVER). Will any weight loss now be included in my required pre op weight loss ? How long did your Kaiser process take ? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    What is your why?

I’m tired of having painful knees and feet. I’m “pre-diabetic” and do NOT want to become a full diabetic. I’m a nurse and I’ve seen the damage diabetes does to every body system! I have hypertension and would love to decrease my medications...been on BP meds since I was 19 so doubt I will get off completely but maybe. However, the event that really pushed me to start seriously pursuing WLS happened at work. One of the things I have to do at work is go to the morgue and sign the paperwork and release bodies to the funeral home. When I had called the funeral home to request the pickup, they asked me the persons weight and when I told them, they said they would dispatch their van along with an extra person due to the weight. As I assisted with moving the person from the morgue tray to their stretcher I realized the person was only slightly heavier that myself. I suddenly felt so sorry for this patient and then felt embarrassed for myself and determined at that moment to do something to get the excess weight off once and for all. I have no idea why this time it affected me so much but I’m glad it did. I’m ready to get the WLS done and get my life and energy back!
  24. As of today, I am down 120 lbs. from my highest weight. My HW was 374 when I had my first appointment with a new endocrinologist in July 2019. My A1C was creeping up again and I was put on Victoza. I made a conscious effort beginning at that point, to maximize the weight loss side effect of the medication. I lost about 60 lbs. by the end of the year. In January 2020, my insurance began to cover WLS. I had my first appointment that month. The process of classes, doctor visits and supervised weight loss was going to take a minimum of 6 months. The insurance and program mandated everything was done through program providers. There was no option to see my local doctor or dietician. Covid slowed down my progression and I also made the choice not to rush to surgery when it first became available again. By the fall, I was ready to proceed. I managed to not gain a tremendous amount back (about 8-10 lbs.) but wanted to stop the trend. I decided to schedule surgery for right before the holidays so I could minimize the time off from work for recovery. I weighed 325 on the day of surgery on 12/14/20. Today, I am 254. Surgery was relatively easy for me. I had post-op discomfort, but no pain. I was able to tolerate and progress through food stages as expected. I’ve not been hungry or overly full since surgery. I do experience old, bad habits trying to creep in at times. I know that is always going to be the case. Surgery did not eliminate my want for food nor the thought of how nice it would be to eat large quantities again. That will also be an on-going battle. The hardest daily thing for me is not to eat and drink at the same time and then to wait until time has passed before I drink again. Eating slowly and thoroughly chewing has been a challenge (with sometimes painful reminders) but I am gradually getting more mindful. I feel better than I have in years. I don’t remember the last time I weighed 250. I would like to get to 180 but don’t know if that is achievable or realistic to maintain. We’ll see. I’m tall so that weight would put me just slightly over normal weight. I recently had 3 month labs run. Everything was normal and my T2 diabetes is currently in remission. I stopped all diabetes meds the day of surgery. The pressure was lowered on my CPAP but there is still a need for it. I’m not done. Even if I never lost another pound, I’m happy with the changes and the regaining of health. One of my primary motivators was the desire to not lose mobility. I’m fortunate that I’ve never had any issues with mobility but I could see the writing on the wall if I stayed the way I was or continued to gain. I did not want to have to participate in any of the pre-surgery preparation. I just wanted to have surgery and be done. I thought I knew all there was to know. And while I did know a lot going in, I really did learn things and have benefitted from listening and following the plan provided. I did not want to weigh, measure or track my food. But I did (and continue to) and it’s paying off. I’m troubled sometimes by questions that I read on this board and it leads me to wonder about the quality (or lack of) preparation that other programs offer. It makes me grateful that for once, I listened and learned. What I take away from this board is the wisdom and experience of others who are going through the WLS process now and those veterans who share strategies that have helped. I try remember that everyone’s experiences are slightly different but I still look for common themes (same process I use when I read vacation/resort reviews).

    Low CO2 Levels

My CO2 levels have been around 19 for as far back as I have records, and my doctor has never brought it up as a concern. I would think that CO2 poisoning would be HIGH CO2 levels, not LOW CO2 levels, so I don't think that's likely to indicate sleep apnea, but I work in oncology, so it's not something I have familiarity with. In fact I just found this: "People who suffer from the nighttime breathing disorder known as sleep apnea may develop high levels of carbon dioxide in the blood during the daytime -- a condition known as hypercapnia," - (Reuters article) So, a CO2 level of 19 is not caused by sleep apnea.
