2/21/23 Sleeves - how is your recovery going?
Bandedbut replied to Victoria_Faith's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved 2/23/23. Overall I feel pretty good, no issues with nausea. I am constantly sipping something all day long to get my protein and water in, but am still concerned about being dehydrated. I feel weak and tired until I get enough in during the day. My only issue has been a little cramp/stich on the left side. It hurts when I take more than 2 sips, or not enough time between sips. I wasn't going to weigh myself so soon or so often, but seeing a pound come off everyday has been encouraging. I know some others have issues with weigh ins, and I know the mind game that happens when the numbers are't what we want to see, and yes, I know I should be focusing on helathy habits. But for ME... right NOW... it's exciting. -
Month 3: Only lost 6 lbs this month Why?
Debbie-Nov2022 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi, I am 3 months and 2 days since my gastric sleeve. I try not to weight myself often but keep finding that I do. I know that there will be stalls and slows but I wasn't expecting to lose only 6 lbs in the entire month. I have not been exercising regularly but i have been following everything else: drinking enough water, getting all my protein in, keeping a low carb diet. I realize that i have been not eating much during the day but tend to get my food in the evenings. Could that impact my weight loss? Any help is welcomed! -
Alternative to surgery (due to cost and GERD fears)
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to Devi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Is RNY not an option? If GERD is a concern but bariatric surgery is the goal, I would consider RNY and see if that fits your needs. -
Insurance doesn't cover bariatric surgery...now what?
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to LMorales's topic in Insurance & Financing
So frustrating! I'm so sorry. Maybe see if an appeal is possible? Sometimes the squeaky wheel gets the grease.... I did self-pay in Mexico and had a WONDERFUL experience. Feel free to read some of my other posts for additional info. I know that's not an option for everyone, and many don't feel comfortable going that route, but it's worth looking into. -
Insurance doesn't cover bariatric surgery...now what?

My primary insurance thru my employer (united healthcare) does not cover it. Im fortunate my husbands new insurance (Aetna) does have bariatric surgery coverage. But before he got this insurance I was seriously looking into going to Mexico for my surgery. There's some financing options available too. -
Insurance doesn't cover bariatric surgery...now what?

Is self-pay an option? I found a great surgeon in Alabama because bariatric surgery was excluded from my insurance as well. I had very few pre-op requirements and the cost was $8995. You could always go to Mexico too which is the cheapest but I was too nervous to go that route. -
February 2023 surgery dates!

I found that gatorade zero with protein, and the premier protein clear drinks are a nice change from the protein shakes. They aren't bitter, and when I serve them over ice and let the ice melt a bit it waters it down a little and it tastes like juice. -
2/21/23 Sleeves - how is your recovery going?
Victoria_Faith replied to Victoria_Faith's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would definitely touch bases with your nutritionist about the protein part. Staying hydrated is the most important thing. My annoying phone alarm trick helped me. I just kept a medicine cup near me, and filled it every 15 minutes and just kept sipping. It's really challenging if you're feeling tired and resting/sleeping a lot. -

I set an alarm on my phone to go off every 15 minutes for a few days. It got me into a routine of constantly sipping. My dietician said if I'm not getting the protein shakes in to make sure I'm at least getting water to stay hydrated. It will help with feeling nausea. After a few days I just kept doing it. It gets a little annoying at first to have the constant reminder to sip, but it helped me. Stay hydrated my friend! -
Insurance doesn't cover bariatric surgery...now what?
catwoman7 replied to LMorales's topic in Insurance & Financing
most insurance companies will cover it, but it's usually not part of their "core" coverage. In order to offer it, employers need to buy a rider for it. So although her company uses Cigna, they probably decided not to have their policy include the optional bariatric surgery rider. -
February 2023 surgery dates!

I'm having trouble getting enough fluid and protein in. I'm trying but I end up taking a nap during the day and it makes me lose out on those goals. And when I wake up it's hard to get everything in before the end of the night. I need to stay up, but I just get so sleepy. It was a problem before surgery too. But as a result of the lack of fluids, I think I may be getting a UTI or something. I'm so sick of the protein shakes, I bought a tropical punch protein water powder stuff by isopure and its pretty bitter, but im going to try to add one of those flavor packets to it to enhance it. Things go down good tho. The first few days it felt bubbly, but each day things got better. Nothing has made me sick yet. I think thats because I haven't tried new things lol. Pureed diet will be another story, hopefully nothing makes me sick. Are you still on full liquids still or did you move to puree? -

I don’t know that I’m really getting a full sensation yet, but possibly that’s due to pacing my liquids? I was discharged on full liquids so I’m just constantly sipping, break for a minute or two, repeat , right now. I’ve had no trouble with getting liquids or protein. Right now I’m aiming for water all the time, 2 protein shakes, and a yogurt. Yesterday I also had a miso soup. Negligent protein but was a nice change. I can have creamy soups but I don’t really want any rn. -

Alternative to surgery (due to cost and GERD fears)
Devi posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am once again considering how to fix my health without surgery. I am self pay and was planning to go to Mexico to Endobariatric. I’ve decided that the potential need for revision due to GERD is going to hold me back. I would not be able to afford a revision and my health insurance would not cover any part of it. Part of me feels let down by this, but I know GERD is no fun. I have it from medication and a handful of times before not medication related. I did notice that Dr. Alvarez mentions the sleeve surgery can potentially heal GERD in those that have it. I do find that interesting since so many end up with revisions. It makes me wonder if I would get lucky and not end up with it. That’s a big roll of the dice though as I would be stuck if I did. This forum has been incredibly helpful to me. Most people here are really kind, which is so nice to see these days. Perhaps if my insurance changes I will reconsider this option. I just wanted to share where I am with it and thank you all for sharing your stories and hopes and struggles and successes. -
I had bypass on Feb 13, and I've never felt so forgetful! I've missed due dates for papers and meetings for work, or even just forgotten to pack something when I leave the house. I've never been this forgetful! I was a little forgetful around a week into my pre-surgery liquid diet, but now its gotten so bad. My boss has been very forgiving but my professors have not. They see it as an excuse, which isn't very nice. Has anyone else experienced this forgetfullness or mindfog after surgery? When does it go away or what do you do to get over it? I'm hitting both protein and water goals now so I'm hoping beyond hope that helps.

I can tell you who you shouldn't use. Do NOT use Dr. Selim Illan at BC Hospital and coordinators Bill Yanez and Stacy Illan. They embezzled a ton of my money, and Dr. Illan BOTCHED up my surgery TWICE!!! There are many great options in Mexico. Don't chance it with a dishonest surgeon.

Thank you very much for your concern I’m actually feeling a whole lot better since my original comment and finally been able to get protein shakes down the proper way! I’m not sure what that episode was but I’ve got an appointment just to tell my doctor my concerns since I did have that scary episode but other than that I’ve been feeling so much better! -
How are you doing today? Checking in because I am having the same issue. Our surgery was the same day and I’m getting half my water in and next to nothing for protein. I can’t stand the taste or smell anymore.

Is the second time around ever more successful and why?
TheRevisionedVagabond replied to ShoppGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yes, I'm the same as you!! I didn't lose all my weight with the sleeve as well and I'm hoping I end up losing just as much, if not more. I agree that if it was an amazing loss, you'd remember. Haha! But man, I hope it works out for you. If you are in the States, you could also try Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro or something? Idk. This is what I'm seeing going around the revision fb groups and people are having crazy success. However, I think most regain once they're off of it. Hmmm, yeah.. It does seem like converting might be the better option but I'm no doctor. Everything else just seems like a quick fix, you know? How long does she want you on it? -
Preventing Dehydration after surgery
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to GeorgieLynn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are companies that will come out and do it. You can just call them directly and schedule. (Just Google "at home IV infusions" or something similar.) They don't typically take insurance, so you pay out of pocket, but because this is ALL they do, its usually not terribly expensive. The other option is to work with the surgeon's office or your PCP to submit it through insurance and have a home health company come in and do them. That's going to be more leg work for you, but then it cuts the cost. -

Mine said the same thing. No "milky protein drinks" until "full liquid diet" stage.
