It can be a very difficult process and a confusing one. You can actually have your insurance company send you their policy regarding WLS coverage. This is what I ended up doing with my HMO because you are absolutely right some representatives will give you different answers. It was a lengthy group of papers but the full policy was there in black and white. I was also able to secure a health care advocate through my insurance company. I have actually been fighting to get this surgery since 2008 and I finally had my RNY in May 2014. I met all the requirements and went through a few different medical groups until I found a doctor and specialists who were willing to support my need for the surgery. I did have to go through the 6 month program in which I had to fulfill my insurance requirements but also my medical group requirements. At first I was a bit annoyed because I had become so studied in the surgeries. I had to drive down to meetings at least once a week which for me was a 3 hour round trip. But I learned and observed several different things from my teachers and fellow patients. I even took a 2 month psychology class which was awesome. I have lost 90 pounds post-surgery and have 10 more to go to meet my goal weight. I have gotten rid of several conditions and medications. I was also recently asked to be a representative for my University's Bariatric Program at an upcoming health event. I have really developed a passion for helping those going through the process. So if you need any encouragement or I can help answer any questions feel free to ask. You sound pretty determined and that is probably the best quality you can have right now. Keep that passion, keep pushing, don't give up...❤️
  2. I had my surgery done in a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. There are many scattered throughout the country. The advantage was that they specialized in this type of surgery and had a complete complement of staff to support the surgery. My surgeon only performed this type of surgery. The nutricianist were specialized for weight loss surgery. The entire range of pre-op testing was done in that hospital. They provided courses. They had staff to work the insurance problems. They chartered and managed the various Bariatric Surgery Support Group Meeting scattered throughout the state. It was like a full meal deal (pardon the pun).

    Getting approved

insurance generally doesn't require you to jump through a bunch of hoops (as long as you qualify, which you said you do) other than many policies require a diet supervised by a physician or dietitian (often for six months) - although not all have this requirement. Your bariatric clinic, on the other hand, will likely have you go through several medical clearances, though - blood tests, sleep study, EKG, etc. Some also require you to go through classes. You may first need a referral to a bariatric surgeon from your PCP - so I would start there. Once you're an official patient at a bariatric clinic, the process will begin..

  6. Normal for some. Sounds like the time to telephone your bariatric clinic and/or surgeon for advice ... "to be sure to be sure" as my Irish pals say!

    Psych Eval

Mine was and is a bit different because I’m already seeing someone and we are working through the bariatric issues together, also part of why I’m waiting a few months still before having surgery. Some psychs seem to love those long questionnaires as you found out during your appointment, hopefully the report is all fine and I’m sorry you have to wait to get an idea of his evaluation

    Post op 3 1/2 weeks

There is no "we" in post-op bariatric eating unless you are talking to patients of the same surgeon being advised by the same dietitian. My instructions may be very different from yours -- you need to check in with your own team. My instructions were: no veggies until 8 weeks post op. Even then, green/low carb veggies only, they had to be cooked enough so that they were soft enough to cut easily with a fork, and no more than 1 oz per meal (the other 1-2 oz of the meal had to be high protein food such as soft meat or scrambled eggs).

Determined To Be A Healthier Person

5 years ago I found myself 24 years old, 322 pounds, and minserable! I decided to have the lap band surgery with the help and support of my family. I successfully lost 90 pounds and my GERD, but couldnt keep up with the frequent and expensive band fills and eventually gained back 25 pounds and the GERD returned. I became demotivated and couldnt stick to a diet long enough to make much progress. Then, last year by eldest brother had the sleeve gastrectomy and went from being 280 pounds and unhappy, to an active marathon runner and happier than I can ever remember seeing him. Not to mention how handsome he looks! Needless to say, that inspired me to do my homeowork on revision surgery and reach out to my "family bariatric surgeon" Dr. James A Davidson (he complete my mother, father, brother and my surgeries). I was concerned that after my emergency gall bladder surgery 3 weeks ago that I would have to push back my surgery due to the weight loss as a side effect of the gall bladder illness. I started a protein shake diet to boost my health and it worked, Dr Davidson approved my bloodwork results and I had surgery on January 13th! The surgery was slightly longer and a bit more invasive since he had to first remove the lap band equipment, so it feels more painful than I remembered. On the bright side, the staff at Forest Park Hospital (Dallas, TX) were very compassionate and informative and the hospital itself is beautiful. I left feeling prepared to handle any issues that might arise and very optimistic. Its only 3 days post-op and I am feeling better everyday! I cannot wait to see my progess in a few weeks, months and especially in a year. I am also starting to put together an action plan. I want to participate in a marathon, learn to scuba dive, buy a bicycle and join a gym! All the things that I was either too embarrassed by my size or just too overweight to do!

    Very slow weight loss?

HI Monica. So after talking to several nutritionists specialized in bariatrics, and researching, I now made peace with the rate of my weight loss. Somebody here posted a table of weight ranges according to age and height. This also helped. I am 61 will be 62 in two months. Have had already major weightloss with my lap band years ago, so this is my second surgery. All nutritionists said these two details are a big factor that will affect my weight loss. I have now lost a total of 33 pounds in 3 months. My lab tests just came in and I am in the absolute normal range, which means no more cholesterol. No more diabetes. No more high blood pressure. This in itself is already my great victory! I now [emoji817] % fir sure that I will loose the rest 20-25 Kgs (40-45 pounds). If it takes a month longer that is also fine. My full bonus is already here, I am medicine free!! I feel great (except for the occasional gas which sometimes, drives me and my hubby crazy kkk) and hope everyone here has great success with their journey. We have all carried our weight too long with all the pain and I suffering that it involved. Now we are all getting a second lease. This in itself is a great thing. So let us all enjoy the ride. be kind and loving to ourselves and also patient with our bodies. They have endured a lot already. Lots if live to everyone. 14. @@CowgirlJane - I think you are dead on right, goes along with Dr. Primack's comments: Craig Primack, MD, at the Scottsdale Weight Loss Center in Arizona, wrote in an email toMedPage Today that bariatric surgery should be considered a treatment, and not a cure. ADVERTISEMENT "In my practice, a subset of patients believe that many of their problems stem from their weight: (poor job, still single, bad marriage, no close friends, etc.) and when they get down to a specific weight then everything will be OK," he wrote. "When they get to that number (or close to it) and realize that they will not achieve the thing they thought their weight would fix, they stop losing weight to literally stall and not have to face the fact that when they are at their goal they still are single, still have a bad job, etc."

    Need some help...

Ok, so I am new to this forum. My name is Tricia and I was banded at St Vincents Trussville AL on Nov 22, 2011. I quickly lost 50lbs and the loss slowed down to a stand still. I was ok with that for a while and went to have them put more Fluid in my band. I went from a 7.5cc to a 9.5 cc over a few months. I got the restriction I needed, but over time developed the horrid complication of nausea and vomiting just about everything including Water. Went back to their office, ( I live 50+ miles away), had a barium swallow and endoscopy which were both inconclusive. Had all fluid removed and basically was told my system needed a break and to reboot. I (and I know this is my fault for non restraint!) quickly gained back those 50 lbs plus a few friends. While all of this was going on, I lost the job with the bariatric coverage and now have only my spouse insurance which has no bariatric. Fast forward to early this year, had fluid put back in again and finally got an appointment where I saw the MD and not the nurse practitioner for the first time since surgery in 2011. He recommended starting over and bumped me up to 7.5cc. I explained to him that I am extremely frustrated with the band and the lack of patient care I have received from him personally since my surgery, and that I would like to explore the option of getting this band out and having the sleeve done. He said that he was sorry and basically since I no longer have bariatric coverage I am out of luck. I have gone to a seminar for a bariatric MD in Huntsville, but he wants $500 up front with no guarantee that he will even take me on as a patient! SO - here I am needing to start all over on my journey - almost 3 years out. I am disgusted and frustrated. Is there anyone here who has had a similar experience and been able to make the band work? I have pain that radiates up into my left shoulder almost every time I eat anything tougher than the consistency of an egg. Because of this I end up either not eating or eating "slider" type foods that I know are no good. Sometimes I wish I had never done this surgery!
  16. But do you still feed your family the same way you did before you got healthy yourself? I just worry that my poor eating habits have gotten us all into a rut of unhealthy and high-carb foods. I'm just looking for ways to sneak more healthy into my family's diet as well. I don't my 3 kids to grow up to have to have bariatric surgery like me.

    newbie please advice

Hi big shell, Welcome to this site. My first suggestion would be to visit a bariatric surgeon and discuss your choices with him/her. Your surgeon will let you know which route they feel will work best for you but the decision is yours. They will also talk to you about which option will be best if your are hoping for a pregnancy. With the band I know they ask you to wait about 12-18 months, when you become pregnant they open the band up fully, you eat normally but healthy!! then after the baby is born, when you are healed and ready, they will start again slowly with fills to get you back on track. I had 100lbs to lose and after visiting a few seminars in my area I chose my surgeon. During my initial consultation we discussed the options. I decided on the lap band because I was afraid of the permanent alteration to my body. I have had good success so far, a friend of mine went the gastric bypass route and while her weight has come off faster, my food tolerence and side effects have been better. Either way is a big step, but it's the first step in changing your life dramatically for the better!! I always remeber my band is only a tool in helping me lose weight, it's not a magic bullet. I get out of it what I put into it. By thinking this way I am never disapointed and don't get discouraged. My surgery was easy, recovery was fast and I was back to a normal life in a shorter time then if I had bypass. Every one is different and healing, pain etc will vary but I have been happy with my lap band choice. good luck and let me know how you are doing. G'Ma
  18. Almost 8 yrs VSG and had severe GERD beforehand. It significantly decreased post op but I've remained on PPI medication the entire time. I was down to 1-2 total doses per week, however I had some regain over the last year and am up to THREE TIMES daily!! It's everything to do with how I carry my weight- all in my middle. While I was quite satisfied with the GERD being almost totally resolved initially, I'm fearful that even IF I lose the current regain it won't go away to the extend that it was in the past. I have been told by my bariatric team that a revision is likely the ONLY way to get the GERD to go away with 100% certainty. That sounds pretty good to me but I am quite fearful of surgery in general because I'm a nurse practitioner and we make terrible patients... I would love to know what the loss pattern was like for those who had the revision and can I plan to see awesome results? I mean, BESIDES the GERD clearing up? I am currently about 40 lbs about my ULTIMATE goal- I never reached that goal with my VSG, stopping about 12 lbs away from it...

How do the numbers DROP so fast?

Amazingly, it is possible. But not for lap band but bypass. Check out this study, it's HUGE right now in the bariatric community: Welsh Medics To Examine How Surgery Can Cure Diabetes Because of this study scientists are scrambling to find out why this is the case. They are already looking at completely different ways to approach diabetes. The results are essentially the same for band and bypass, but bypass remission happens within days, diabetes remission happens with weight loss in banding.
  20. My wife was right around 60 when she had a lower body lift and thigh lift in two procedures. I'm 55 and just had an extended TT and manboob reduction. Overall, count on a rougher journey than with the average bariatric procedure due to the extensive amount of cutting and scarring involved.

Mexico Bariatric was recommended to me. They gave me the option of two surgeons. I did some research and picked her. I dealt with Karen to start with and now Rika :-)

    Keeping Down Vitamins

YES! Can't keep them down either and have tried several of the bariatric brands in addition to a generic CVS children's chewable. I'm going to go get some children's Flinstone's chewables or gummies (but my bariatric center at Stanford says chewable only - I think better to get them down than not though) and see if that works. I'm also not able to keep down the calcium citrate (Celebrate brand) and will look for an alternative for that.
  23. I have read on this forum from numerous people that the Protein powders are awful and they just have to choke them down. I got a sample packet from my bariatric surgeon's office and I have to say...it is GOOD!!! It is chocolate Splendor and is rather tasty! Now, with that said, many people have said that what you can tolerate before surgery may not be the case after surgery. So I am wondering what do I do to prepare for after surgery? Should I go ahead and buy the product now or wait?

Banded 2 years ago..no weight loss

Hi jgandg. A couple of comments; I've had several patients not lose weight for a while then "get it" and somehow they begin to understand how to use the band to lose weight and their weight comes off. It's very important to follow the eating principles that make the band work best. If you do this, then you will notice the decrease in hunger. Unfortunately, gastric banding doesn't work the same for everyone. All bariatric surgeons know this and we can't explain why (even though we have a lot of theories). But one thing is for sure, following the general guidelines, often provided by your surgeon, is absolutely necessary for long-term success.

    Anyone near Frederick/Hagerstown?

Hi There! I live in Frederick as well and would love to start a friendship with someone going through the same thing as I am! I was banded on Aug 28 by Dr. Gorman with Summit Bariatric Group out of Chambersburg Hospital! I know, a long distance to drive, but when I started the process (1/08) Frederick and Hagerstown hospitals were not offering any programs! So, now that I am banded, my doc's office said that I can attend other support groups that are closer to home. I plan on attending the support group in Hagerstown with you! I know that you must be excited about your upcoming banding! I am still very happy but ready to go back to regular foods. The creamy stuff is really boring and it is difficult on my family when we are out and about and they are hungry. We have to search around for a place where I can eat something too! Sucks for them. Congratulations on getting this far on your journey! I look forward to talking to you again soon!
