What’s everyone eating 6 weeks post op?

I was on a pretty normal diet by then - steak, chicken, veg, etc. Greek yogurt and a few berries for snacks, maybe an occasional protein shake if I was short for the day, (very) small salads with a couple ounces of meat and cheese for lunches - overall fairly normal things. But it all depends upon how your surgeon's program progresses (as above, some are slower than others) and how you tolerate things, which can also be a big variable. -
Thanks for your replies @johnsons13 @matt z @bostonwlkc I had a gastric sleeve. Basically now I’m having shakes, egg whites, yogurt, milk cheese... all as recommended by the doctor, low fat. I’m glad to know it’s normal... I was worried. So I just need to wait and adapt little by little to my new stomach👌

Mousecat88 exciting! My op date is November 5th, and pre-op diet for me begins on the 20th I think. I've been doing 80% of the pre-op diet already for the last couple of weeks... greek yogurt for breakfast, 1 protein shake for lunch, another greek yogurt for a work day snack. Then I've been having chicken and veggies or salads for dinner. I've really enjoyed this process of basically eating what I'll be having for 2 weeks before and after the surgery. Honestly, its not bad. I haven't weighed myself yet, but this may be the first time I can't wait to see the scale whenever I go to my pre-op appointment this Friday.

I had 2 week liquid pre op and it seemed like such a hard thing. But my liquid diet was every 2 hours drink or eat a Gatorade or g2, fat free or light yogurt, popsicle, skim milk, or fruit juice. I had to drink 60g of protein in protein drink a day. I had some free items like sugar free popsicles, chicken or beef broth, diet coke, sugar free jello. I just made sure to consume what I was supposed to and leave the freebie stuff when I was craving. I did cheat here and there and it was hard going through it. Especially when I would read on here people with 2-5 days of pre op liquid diet and I had 2 weeks. -

I have a question for everyone: Have you been given a maximum calorie goal and protein goal for the day? My nutritionist still insists they don't want us counting calories or protein. I was sleeved 5/3/18 and have only lost 40 pounds since surgery. I lost 10 before surgery, so total down is 50 pounds. I've been the same weight for 7 weeks now and moving a LOT! I've been eating what I'm told to eat: protein first, then veggies. I have ff plain greek yogurt w/strawberries and Splenda for a snack as well as cashew nuts. If my husband is having French fries or something like that that's not allowed, I do have a bite, but that's not often. I've read that this is the time I should be losing the most and losing it easily. The only thing I can think of is maybe I'm having too many calories in a day? I'm really disappointed in the nutrition/support group portion of the program I'm in. The support group meets with the nutritionist once a month and we don't really get much time to talk. I definitely feel MUCH better and am able to do things physically I couldn't do before surgery. I'm SO happy for everyone who's doing so good! Starting weight: 235, Surgery weight: 225, current weight: 185 -
Does anyone know if it makes a difference if you get most of your protein in at once or is it better to spread it out throughout the day? I personally have a hard time with the protein shakes (the taste) and am trying to find ways to get my protein with minimal shakes. I’m on stage 2 of my plan which is full liquids (blended soups and yogurt). I was going to blend a siggis yogurt with 1/2 c fair life milk and adding unjury flavorless protein powder making it 42 g of protein. I would only need about 20 more grams for the remaining of the day which is easy! I would probably only need about 1/2 a shake with the protein from my soups. Any advice on getting most of the protein in early in the day?

I get to drink 3 protein shakes a day and 2 light yogurts. Two days before surgery I can only have 65-80g of liquid protein a day, but it has to be clear liquids such as clear protein drinks, zero calorie sports drinks, frozen sugar free popsicles, fat free clear broth, sugar free Jello and decaf tea.

I did 2 weeks liquid only. 4 shakes a day, sugar free yogurt, pudding and jello. Every program is different. Mine had a daily meal plan and it was very specific.

Ladies and gentlemen I don't know if you guys have heard of something called skinny syrups its a no calorie and no sugar liquid flavoring I just added a drop to my protein shake (which it says you can add to coffee oatmeal lattes yogurts etc.) And it made a big difference in taste the shake wasn't as charky way more tolerable. Mind you my surgery for the sleeve is in 2 weeks hopefully it will still taste great afterwards. They come in different flavors as well I saw pumpkin spice, vanilla, and mocha flavors from TJMAXX.

Used to love cottage cheese, had it with fruit, had it with veggies, had it by itself. but since it and Greek Yogurt made me vomit I cringe when I see them in the store. Don't if I will ever have the courage to eat them again! -
Struggling With Vitamins

I have ruined the taste of many yogurts with meds in it. I can't wait to be able to swallow pills again. But now that I hve found these Bari Life powdered multi with iron, I'll never buy anything else unless they stop making it. I haven't tried the capsules because I got a sample from my surgeons office and that is how I found out I enjoy a vitamin finally I had tried another brand, but after swallowing it, it had that vitamin after taste. YUCKY!! My kids even tasted the Bari Life and my husband and we all agree that this tastes like those powder things you put in water for flavor. It does leave behind a little granules almost looks like sand, but I kept shaking it and this is something I would actually recommend for those with a hrd time with vitamins. -
That's a good tip not to have drinkable yogurt post-op. I just went and bought the drinkable yogurts today for pre-op, which starts Monday, and then post-op for after my Oct 23rd surgery. I think I will just drink them just for pre-op (since I bought them and don't want them to go to waste) and hold off for post-op. Congrats on the weight loss so far. That's great!

Maybe not enough protein is the issue. I would follow what your surgeon recommends, they should have given you a very specific plan. Greek yogurt is good and has a lot of protein but the protein drinks are really the best way to get it in right now.

The last two days I barley ate or drank anything and and still nothing has changed. I know I shouldn’t be taking in no more then 400 calories

I know that Hyatt Place and Homewood Suites will go out and purchase groceries for you during the day and stock your fridge if you give them a list - no extra charge other than what the groceries cost at the store which they put right on your bill. You could have yogurts and milk and fruit delivered for smoothies (carry your own protein powder), chicken breast and salad stuff. I try to do that when I'm traveling. -
You have lost almost 20 lbs and that’s great!!! What are you eating right now? Have you added to liquids? Are you staying in a calorie range? I had surgery on the 2nd and after week 1 could add drinkable yogurts and runny soups blended.. 60-80 g of protein and a 600-800 calorie range. I noticed I didn’t loose the first two days (was even up) of adding the soup and yogurt. Maybe you are just adjusting?

I’m 11 days post op (10/1) and this is the first day I’ve felt like myself. I had my 2 week check up today and my surgeon and nutritionist say all is going well. I’m down 20 lbs and was cleared to start stage 4. In my excitement I ate too fast. Got down 4 bites of chicken and it felt wrong. Then I felt sick and threw up. Horrible. Can I just live on shakes and yogurt? I also also got the all clear to exercise but I’m still so fatigued I don’t know what I could possibly get accomplished. Anyway, is anyone concerned about getting enough water?

Sleeping might be hard. My husband went out and bought a recliner rocker as soon as I got home from the hospital. I couldn't lay down, lay on my side, nothing. I sat up at the hospital for the three days I was there and continued to need to be sitting up for a couple weeks. This might vary from person to person and be dependent on how old or heavy you are going in. But maybe be ready with extra pillows for propping if you don't already have a recliner. As far as eating goes, water and protein drinks will probably be what you focus on the most for a good while. Warm drinks, broths, tomato soup, greek yogurt, sugar free pudding. Cold things might be hard to tolerate initially. If you feel discomfort switch to room temperature liquid. Good luck and be brave! Happy for you!

Eating alas is the issue, I tried an one-inch chunk of ripe 🍌 Wednesday, a few minutes,to get it in and a hour-and- half urping, burping and vomiting. Not worth it, I am so tired of it all, strained,soups, broths, protein skakes, water and no calorie drinks.And my taste buds aren't the same either. When. I was shopping at Wal-Mart I mentioned to my Son I used to buy Lipton Diet citrus green tea at lunchtime, we bought some and I cannot abide the stuff now. Pitched one,in the trash today. So I get discouraged, all the others that were our surgery twins are far,far ahead. I told,Tomkitten at first I wanted steak, either peas and new potatoes and pearl onion. Now what I would like, teriyaki fried tofu. Take my tofu, drain and dry it off and then saute it in Kikkomon soy sauce , mmaybe throw in some finely sliced green onion and sliced mushrooms, but just the tofu and teriyaki sauce would please me. And what I couldn't eat right away. I can store in my Rubbermaid orTupperware. And am I lactose intolerant? Don't think So but I have thrown up Greek yogurt and I do cottage every time I have tried it, and I used to eat it all the time pre-surgery,.💦 -

Aw I love that you shared it with your family and froze what you could. Berries freeze wonderfully, by the way. I'm in stage two and I'm using them in smoothies with protein water and greek yogurt. Good luck with your procedure!. -
23 days out and still no loss

The not being able to tolerate solid food sounds kind of normal to me. The guidelines my doctor gave me said soft foods only (pureed meats, mashed vegetables, scrambled eggs, refried beans, ricotta, cottage cheese, yogurt) until week 4. You're just barely past week 3. I'd stick to super soft/mushy stuff for a few days and see where you get. I'm coming up on 8 weeks, and I still have discomfort if I eat something that's too big or not soft enough. Be gentle to yourself and don't rush. We're all relearning how to eat -

I have a hard time with most meats. I can tolerate meatballs in sauce, but that's about it - even deli meats sometimes hurt going down. I eat it anyway, though, because if I didn't I would only get protein from cottage cheese, tuna, or shakes (i can tolerate things like greek yogurt, but I don't like the taste anymore). I don't throw it up or anything, but it makes me feel crummy and tired and my stomach hurts until it passes through. I also mostly get by on soups. Sometimes shrimp is ok, and when my husband takes me to a steakhouse for dinner, he gets a steak with a lobster tail on the side and I eat that. Bread and grains in all forms make me feel crummy, too. Overall, not much variety! I'm getting used to it, though. -

SIX DAYS OUT!!??! I have to give you some serious credit, I am strong willed but at 6 days out I couldn't even take the smell of them cooking here at home! I actually had to leave the house when the cooking was being done and come home after they were done. The dog and I would go on a hour or so drive and they would spray the house with febreeze before I made it home. It only lasted for about a week or so but it was HARD at least until I made it to the puree stage. Matter of fact the family ate out most of that week and I stayed home alone and "enjoyed" my greek yogurt or protein shake. I know I could not have done Chick-fil-a that soon! I would have been nibbling on a fry or nugget, or sipping on some tea!
