  1. Your story echoes many of ours, just different names and places. Puberty is not an uncommon trigger for weight gain, many of us where rail thin till the big P and then BAM! It hits us, middle age widens us even more and before you know it we are morbidly obese. Most all of us here have a success story that we can share, there are a very few who have failures. You have to weigh the risk VS reward. We all wish you the very best as you start your new adventure in weight loss.
  2. You do know that being tight generally causes weight gain rather than loss? Because you can’t eat the satisfying foods you subconsciously eat sliders . You need to go and see a Dr. You may need tests. However you may also need to accept that your band has come to the end of its lifespan and will never again do for you what it was intended to do. It might be time to start researching other options.
  3. Hello, I posted here way back when I had my surgery in 2006 but I haven't been back in years. I tried talking to some folks at OH.com but.... not too helpful there. Here's my story and question. I will try to make it short and sweet. I got banded in July, 2006 with the 10cc band. I lost 130 lbw in the first year and got down to a size 6 (from a 22!). I still love my band and I am happy with my decision to have it but the last few years have been bad to me. I lost my job and insurance about a year after having the band. I was able to self pay a few times to get into my doctor for check ups but after year 2 or 3, I could not afford to go back. In that time, I gained 70 lbs back and I have had horrible acid reflux with aspiration. I was recently able to get on the state funded insurance program and upon telling my PCP what was happening, she referred me to a local bariatric surgeon (not the same that did my surgery) I had to jump through a bunch of hoops with them to get in as an "adoption case" as they weren't the ones who performed my surgery and my appointment is today. This past weekend I ended up in the ER not being able to eat, drink or even swallow saliva. It was very all of the sudden and I hadn't even eaten anything that day, only had coffee. The ER I went to was clearly inept at handling band patients but by the guidance of my former surgeon, they did unfill me under flouroscopy and that is how we saw the slip. I think I already knew just going by my syptoms for the past 2-3 years and the weight gain and the increase in amount of food I can eat. The band is supposed to lay horizontal or point up towards the shoulder. Mine angles down towards my hip bone. They also found I have a hiatial (sp?) hernia. I did get in with my former surgeon and he said I definetly need surgery. He recommends transitioning to a bypass or sleeve but my insurance wont cover that and I don't have 25k lying aroung. He indicated that after repositioning, there is only a 50/50 chance that I will lose the weight again. That scares me. I am thinner and healthier than I was, but not where I want or need to be. At 5'8 and 224, I am considered obese now. So my question is, has anyone else had their band sugically re-positioned and still managed to lose weight as they did before? Or did you just continue to have problems? Im on my way to the other surgeon right now for his imput but any comments or sharing your experiences would really be helpful. Thanks so much! Kayla

    Banded Yesterday!

I was banded 11/9/15. I had lost 25 lbs presurg and then between fills 1 and 2, I gained back 6. Fill 2 was three days ago and I am down 7. Bad bad decisions over the holidays made me pick that stupid 6 lbs back up. I was so frustrated about gaining weight and thinking my band wasn't working that I just ate and ate. And ate the wrong food. Restriction does help but this weight gain was my fault and my fault alone. Now that I have finally conquered the "blame", I am feeling much more confident about this journey. Hopefully this feeling lasts. Good luck everyone.

    Support group meeting

I think you can obviously break it down into three topics: 1) life pre-band: speak about those issues that most of the people in the audience can relate to (fitting into seats, embarrassing moments, missed opportunities); maybe mention the cycle of dieting and struggle with your weight pre-band; maybe also mention your moment of revelation (when and how did you decide that enough was enough and that the band was your answer) 2) life with the band: when you reached restriction, when you first realized that things were really working, your first or proudest moment of success during the process 3) life after reaching goal: maintenance, the difference between your life now and before the band (things that you do now that you couldn't do then). Finally, maybe mention your strategies of surpassing challenges along the way (the urge to binge, conquering plateaus, dealing with setbacks like weight-gain or stressful events, how you motivate yourself to get to the gym) Maybe include some interesting anecdotes (a particularly interesting reaction of a person who saw you for the first time in a long time (whatever stands out) etc.).
  6. I got pregnant 3 weeks after surgery, I was devastated, I was 41 married and had 2 kids, I never planned anymore, I just wanted to diet not have kids kinda thing, I considered all options. 7 weeks later I miscarried and it actually upset me a lot but I got on with the diet and put it behind me. I had gone 8 years using the withdrawal method and never got pregnant. Two months after that, low and behold I was pregnant again, unplanned. This time it was a shock, but after losing the last one, it put babies v diet in perspective. I continued dieting, lost 75lbs (45lbs whilst pregnant) and had my band de-filled by 2.0ml at 20 weeks. My pregnancy was great, loved it! I lost 28lbs within 2 weeks of giving birth .. I guess that was baby weight gained and with bump and baby weight gone I was a new person - so much smaller than I thought I would be. My son Nixon is now 8 months, he is a joy and the best thing that has ever happened to us. I have maintained my weight whilst breastfeeding but had my band filled last week so I can continue my lapband journey. Lots of people get pregnant whilst banded ... the weightloss changes your fertility for one thing. Dont think its the end of your diet, just keep eating healthily, put your baby first, be sensible, listen to your Doctor. I was a plus sized Mum to all 3 of my kids, dont be embarrassed, we have the right to have kids like everyone else and we dont all have complications, there will always be bigger moms than you, the nurses have seen it all. I started the journey at 325lbs, now about 260, long journey still ahead ... and a cute baby boy to accompany me with it. Be prepared for when life throws you a curve ball! Good luck x
  7. My doctor changed my meds to get me off insulin, and the glyboride did wonders. My numbers are in the low 100's but it seems I have gained over 5 lbs while on it. He said it is known to do that. He is more concerned with good numbers, then the effects from the band. These are 2 different doctors.
  8. I have not been sleeved yet, but my pre-op appt. is October 4th. Here is a list of questions I have compiled so far that I am interested in: Gas after surgery: Some people complain a lot about this. Does this have to do with the person or the surgeon's technique? What can I expect after surgery? Do you make everyone's stomach the same size or is it based on the size of my original stomach? Is there anything you might find during surgery that would cause me to wake up and not be sleeved? Straws: What is your "policy" on straws? I have heard different things online. Can you explain the theroy behind not using a straw? Weight gain from/after surgery: Some people online report gaining weight after surgery. Is this normal? What causes it? and what can I expect? Fluid Vs Protein: I am worried about getting all my fluid in. I don't drink that much liquid now. What is most important fluid or Protein? Blood tests: What are you testing for and what might show up that would cause concern or to have to postpone the surgery? Thats all I have for now, but I may be adding some after I read the replies to this post Bonnie
  9. Mine returned between year one and two after surgery. Was great while it lasted. It's tougher now fighting cravings and hunger urges to keep the weight off, then during the whole initial losing period. I'm sure like everything relating to the body, each person's experience will be different. My advice is to really concentrate on solidifying your new healthly eating habits while you're losing. For me venturing off the path even a little resulted in weight gain. Gotta stick to the plan forever.
  10. Hi Rose, Not sure exactly what pouch packing is, but I can guess. I was banded 8/28/08 and did very well for a good while and lost 67lbs. But for some reason, probably due to my abusing my band pb'ing alot, heartburn, nightly cough, acid reflux, I had to get 2 unfills in a row. My doc said he had to take all the Fluid out of my band and have an ultra sound to see what was going on--slippage? It turned out it hadn't slipped thank God, but it took 3 months before I was back to the restriction I needed which is where I am now. I tell you all that because I gained back 27lbs while my fluid was out of my band. Like a dummy I felt like I had a "get out of jail free card" and I didn't eat right, hence the weight gain. So my advice to you is be VERY careful what you eat during this time until you are properly restricted again. Good Luck!

  12. Your age has a lot to do with whether you loose some elasticity in your skin making the loose skin not to go away. It also has a lot to do with how obese you got b4 you got your weight loss operation. Usually the hair loss is minimal & whether hair loss runs in your family, especially if women in your family hair thins with age. The skin on your face is always thinner when you loose weight quickly but most of it goes back to whatever is normal for your face shape. Look at photos of yourself b4 you started gaining weight as a child if need be. When skin is stretched out from becoming obese or even pregnancies, everyone is different from their body shapes & skin's elasticity. Some lucky few women never get stretch makes during pregnancy. The more stretch marks that occurred during your weight gain the less likely your skin will snap back firm to when you were a child or teen. The healthier way you feel loosing weight is the biggest plus ever than staying extremely obese! I've gotten off high blood pressure meds for the 1st time in my adult life & I'm 65. I started getting extremely obese in my mid20s. So I can honestly say I am really enjoying my 60s more than my late 20s, 30s, 40s & 50s because I can walk without getting short of breath & I can actually buy stylish clothes finally. There are side effects to being obese & side effects to surgery. Exercise once your able to! But if the loose skin is your main hate of loosing your weight then you need to save money to get it removed or wear shape garments so you feel better looking in your smaller clothes. For Pete's sake even thin movie stars wear spanks under their red carpet outfits BC they try to elude perfection. We're all our own worst enemies no matter how rich & famous you are. Lol Be so proud of yourself what you did to help yourself & never give up BC the best is yet to come. Smiles goes miles & a huge healer for your outlook on life! Big hugs to you all with a smile included! Sent from my VK700 using the BariatricPal App
  13. I just attended a support group and a someone asked how to prevent and reverse regain and here were some things mentioned: Start planning and timing your meals again Dont eat and drink within 30 mins of each other Hydrate for the majority of your day (calorie and sugar free) you cant over eat if youre drinking No random snacking, this is grazing and leads to weight gain Weight yourself weekly, youll always know whats really going on Attend support groups Mental health is as important as physical, dont neglect it Any major changes call your Doctor immediately

    Birth Control

I have been on birth control for years due to irregualr menstrual cycles. I don't know if it contributed to my weight gain before surgery, but I do notice I tend to eat more the week prior to starting or I get the urge to eat when I know I'm not hungry.

Para guard IUD. No added weight gain or hormones, love it! Hate depo and pills and this works for me
  16. Anyone else see a gain of a few pounds the week or even a few days before period? I know I haven't been eating different and the scale says I'm up 3 lbs? I guess this is what happens when you go from not having periods forever to actually getting them
  17. Since being sleeved on the 21st of October, I've been weighing myself daily. In the last 3 days I haven't lost and in fact I think I went up a pound or two. Is this normal? I'm feeling a little discouraged. I can now have mushy foods and creamy soups and I have been. Did I move too fast to the next stage of food?

    Help...I'm Falling Off The Wagon

Thanks for being honest!!! I can totally relate!!! I am 1 yr post-op, and my appetite has increased, and my sweet craving too! Plus it doesn't help that its the holidays, and food is everywhere! Personally my weight goes up, and down 5 pounds or so. My Dr. wants me at 145, so if I go up past 150 I freak out ,and put myself in check! The good thing is that you realize your cravings... Acknowledging this is key. We are human... we will make mistakes! Put yourself in check! An occasional treat is ok! I like sugar-free popsicles, Jello & S/F pudding. Weigh yourself, and set a weight gain limit. It's normal to go up & down a few pounds... know your bodys norm. PS... Drink plenty of water!!! Good Luck!!!
  19. It sounds you know what has led to your weight gain. I recommend that you go back to basics and make an appointment with your NUT. Embrace the Stall! http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall
  20. I am looking to see if anyone has gotten sleeved with the minimum bmi standard. I have tried so many diets only to have them ending in more weight gain. I wouldn't even be as upset about my weight or bmi number if it weren't for HOW i carry the weight. I am a big ol apple! Im looking to find others who are in my boat and what their outcomes have been post op.
  21. If your out of control you have to regain that control. 1. track everything you eat 2. prioritize water 3. stop eating sugar - includes all the foods loaded with sugar 4. get out all those papers from your surgery and read the avoid these list again. 5. highly refined foods loaded with simple carbs are your path back to weight gain. how much of your grocery basket came from the 3 walls ? 1. produce 2. meats 3. dairy how much is from the center of the store ?

Feeling Down, Obsessing Myself To Crazy Town

You told yourself in the post....you're over thinking this. You're stressing (which is a major contributor to weight gain) and this is not good. Instead of thinking about it so much and crunching the numbers until you are cross-eyed, how about going for a walk and taking a look around. Enjoying the fresh air, the pretty trees, the summer flowers, the birds overhead. Gatorade and Powerades are VERY high in sugar. This could be contributing as well. I heard someone say (in one of the MANY weight loss attempts I've tried) that sugar is a inflamitory (and addictive!). In other words, the more sugar you have, the more your body will become inflamed and store the sugar it doesn't need as fat. I've worked very hard to get off of sugar. I know it's hard, but you might move to the G2 or the Powerades with lighter sugar. Also, in that same course, she said to always eat Protein before you eat sugar, as the protein helps your insulin stores deal with the increase of sucrose. PS. Don't over think how your posts will sound. We're all individuals and have different ways of expressing ourselves. I'm sure some of what I say on here is easily ignored, but maybe somewhere, some time something I say might help. Good luck!!!

    After The Fill

AFTER THE FILL I'm not sure what everyone means by "restriction". I don't know that I feel "restricted". I do feel like I get a fuller a little faster and have eaten a little less since my fill. Still feel like its a good amount of food and when I eat with friends and family it takes me more time to eat my food than to eat their food. I feel proud of how little food is on my plate rather than embarrassed about how MUCH food is on my plate. There's been nothing that I can't eat yet. I have tried to stay away from the doughy stuff just cause I've heard horror stories. I'm not that big of a fan of bread anyway. So, its' been 7 weeks and I'm 24 lbs lighter - YAY! I probably would have lost more if I would have gotten filled the first time around. I've never vomited, I've not felt miserable, since the first few days - I feel fabulous. Nothing has ever gotten "stuck" nor have I ever had to "dislodge" anything. Those words are scary to me and blessedly I'm not exactly sure what they even mean. I am very pleased with the results thus far. For the most part, I don't even feel like I have the band - just that I eat less, have more energy and my snug fitting clothes now fit like they're supposed to. No one other than the few people I've told - fam and a couple of friends - have commented about my weight loss. I can't wait til my coworkers say - hey you're loosing weight! I'm fighting the urge to run out to my garage and pull out those 2 boxes of my favorite clothes that I had to pack up because they were too tight! I'm gonna wait until I've lost at least 40 lbs to do that! I can't wait - I had some cute stuff! The one thing that I haven't yet incorporated is exercise. I do get up and get moving more - around the office and at home. I've walked to a nearby park and played around there a couple of times. I also bought a stretch band that I use for arm exercises as I watch tv. However, I need to incorporate a full exercise plan that includes 30 minutes of exercise at least 5 days a week. WEIGHT LOSS Well I've made up for the 4 lb weight gain - I'm down to 347 for a total of 25 lbs. Woo hoo. I did this week stop drinking juice. I was probably drinking 300 calories a day in juice. Now Ice Tea and I are friends! I don't know why I didn't think of that sooner. I also bought some of these new Sobe/Lifewater drinks that have zero cals. My Fav is the apple pear. So far - I couldn't be HAPPIER. I feel FABULOUS!
  24. We're getting so close, and I was finally able to get my maternity photo shoot done so thought I would share with everyone. Update on the medical stuff super fast; 2 weeks ago I was put on prednisone to help my platelets stabilize. They had dropped down into the 70Ks and normal is 150-400K, the anesthesiologist didn't feel comfortable with my numbers that low to have an epidural or spinal block so the steroid therapy is the only thing that they could give me to get my numbers up. 10 days on the pred and my numbers are up to 121k, still not within normal range, but over the 85k that is needed for the spinal WOOT WOOT. If it weren't for VSG, I would not be able to have this treatment. I thank God every day that VSG was possible because if I would have gone with RNY, I'd be looking at general anesthesia for delivery since steroids would cause major issues with a pouch. We're scheduled for the csection on 1 November. I'm so ready for her to get here. This last Thursday, I was released from the high risk ob because everything is spot on for both of us. Tatum is now weighing 6.5-7lbs, and I'm super uncomfortable. Hanging in there, and trying to stay off my feet. Luckily, I have had zero side effects from the pred other than major hunger, and major irritability. I have officially gained 35lbs, and will probably gain at least 5-7lbs due to the prednisone therapy that I have to stay on until delivery. I gained 5lbs in just a week once I started the pred. But, the doctors are elated with my progress and honestly, I do not care anymore about the weight. I'm just ready for her to get here, and be done being pregnant. Thank you all for your continued support, encouragement and friendship ! ! ! Maternity picture time 10 days from delivery - weight gain to date 35lbs Life is well pretty fantabulous ! ! !

    Necessary But Scarey

I am 11 months out and down over 200 pounds. i can eat anything, just not a lot of it. there is still satisfaction from eating, but not the same as i had before. I actually taste food now instead of inhaling it. also now that i eat less it free's up time for talking and having conversation at meals. My satisfaction comes less from food and more from the experiences that i have now with friends and family. My satisfaction comes from feeling better as a whole. There can be weight gain as with any WLS but with the sleeve it takes work. you must eat the wrong things sun up to sun down to effectively gain weight.
