    Boca Burgers

Ok- Fiance is a vegetarian so I've been privy to almost all of the varieties on the market. -Gardenburger makes a mushroom burger that is AWESOME -Morningstar Farms "bacon" is really good, especially with a little sugar free honey -Fiance lives on Morningstar Farms Spicy Chik patties -Also prefer the Morningstar Farms "burgers" to the Boca brand  Kristin

    good morning foods

Dragnowillow- I LOVE the morningstar "bacon"! My fiance is a vegetarian, and I LOVE meat... but I really like this stuff with a little sugar free honey. And if I'm in a hurry for breakfast, I grab one of the sugar free Instant Breakfast packs. Kristin

    is someone deleteing large threads?

SO true. For example, I spent about 30 min on my post in the vegetarian thread posting about good cookbooks, finding the website for them etc.And in another light, I think people forget that many newbies do searches to see if their questions or situation has been discussed before. Deleting threads can short-change others, getting the info they seek. I deleted mine today to move it to a more appropiate section, no one had posted in it, but I would never have deleted it if people were in discussion.

    is someone deleteing large threads?

I noticed the vegetarian one was missing, too, but I thought maybe I just couldn't find it again. I was really enjoying that, too. I did post the seitan recipe someone asked about, so maybe that will get it going again... Emily

    is someone deleteing large threads?

Hey! The vegetarian discussion was deleted. :-( WTF??
  7. I can't find the thread where we were discussing this, but I'll post it here and maybe anyone interested will find it. It's easy to make and freezes well; I used to use it a lot. My favorite ways were to make pepper steak with it or to bread it with egg and cornmeal and spices and fry it (haven't done fried anything for several years now, but I loved it). Vital wheat gluten is available at natural food stores or in most grocery stores in the section with flours. Nutritional yeast is available at natural foods stores. Blend in blender and then pour into a mixing bowl: 2 c. water 1 t. salt 3/4 c. raw oatmeal 2 T. soy sauce 2 T nutritional yeast Stir in: 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 c. vital wheat gluten (1 cup first and then in 1/2-cup increments) It will get very stiff and form a ball. Let stand 20 minutes. Form into a roll and slice or just pat into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick and cut into squares. "Beef" Broth: 10 c. water 8 ounces tomato sauce 1/2 c. soy sauce 2 T. onion powder 3 T. nutritional yeast flakes Bring broth ingredients to boil in a large saucepan. Drop the pieces of seitan into the broth and let cook at a low boil until the pieces are tender--usually about 1 1/2-3 hours. Will keep a week in refrigerator or can be frozen in the broth for future use. For a "Chicken" Broth: 12 c. water 3 T. poultry seasoning 4 T nutritional yeast 1/2 c. soy sauce 1 large onion, sliced 3 bay leaves These can be used in most recipes in place of meat...can even be ground up and used as "hamburger" Emily

First Day of Solids. What is Normal?

I may have eaten too fast. I have only had mashed potato today. Think I'll try some vegetarian sausage tonight and see how it goes. Slowly this time...
  9. I do. ANd as soon as I did (yesterday) solids with protien (soy protien as I am a vegetarian) I found myself not as hungry as I was on mushies and soft foods. But yes, i was hungry an hour after eating.
  10. First day of solids for me. I haven't had a fill yet. Is it normal to have it feel a little weird when you first eat solids? What I mean is, I do feel more full than with mushies, thank heavens, because I was getting hungry, but it almost feels like food is stuck in there, like I ate a brick and it's laying in the tippy top of my stomach. It was my first dinner of solid food that feels stuck. I had "fake pork ribs" It's vegetarian soy BBQ pork. Or is it normal to have this reaction, some irritation, your first day? <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

I Just Ate a Chocolate Bunny!!

ROFL No, the bunny went down fine...(figures) It was my first dinner of solid food that feels stuck. I had "fake pork ribs" It's vegetarian soy BBQ pork. Maybe I should make a thread...:-p

As a vegetarian, I eat a high amount of carbs and am losing weight. It's not the carbs that made me fat, but the fact that I ate enough to feed a football team. I was on Atkins for 2 years once and developed diverticulitis from it. I also could not sustain that way of eating and as soon as I ate carbs, I never saw weight pour back on so fast. WOW. In all my dieting years, I never had such a rebound and then some than I did from that diet. But there again, I didn't lose weight because I ate too much on that too. :nervous
  13. Hi Babs! Thanks for reading it all! I do think it may be the Protein shakes, or just overall hunger issues. I, um, went nuts last week & overate a ton... really, really, really bad choices. BUT... the pain went away, lol. So either it was the lack of Protein drinks or it was the lack of hunger. I'm trying to get my head back under control this week & figure out which thing is causing the pain. I thought I'd beaten the pain, but as soon as I cut back the calories, it popped right back up. I do still have my gall bladder. I was wondering about it as well. My doc suggested I take my temp regularly, lol. I'd never even considered it! It's been normal so far, so he doesn't think it's the gall bladder. We see him again next Monday, so I should have another update. Hope you get your pain figured out Leener! How on earth do you get all your protein in as a vegetarian? I don't think I could eat enough tofu!

    Spaghetti Squash?

My two cents about spaghetti squash: Ya - it's a squash that tastes like squash. But if you can't have the pasta because of the band or diabetes, etc, then it is a good alternative I think. The taste is plain enough that it won't overpower whatever you serve it with. I'm Sicilian, and love my sauces. I learned all the ways to make them healthy, vegetarian, no fat, organic - you name it. The real trouble comes when you want to pour it on something and pasta and rice are no-no's. Spaghetti squash makes for a good substitute. So do fresh spinach leaves (um, but only if you happen to like spinach). Another thought is to make your sauce marinara-style and full of vegetables like zuccini.
  17. Strawarts, you crack me up!!! Ok, here is my day (I'm just over 1 month post-up and still on mushies): Breakfast: protien shake made with flax oil, unjury protien powder, and soymilk. Sometimes I flavor it up with almond, coconut, or mint extracts. Lunch: One cup of some pureed homemade thing like vegetarian chili, tuna salad with low-fat mayo, chicken croquettes, hummus, tofu-veggie stir fry (these are all blended in the blender) Snack: Another protien shake if I feel I need it Dinner: Same as lunch, though I have eaten out a few times and had Indian food that was already pureed, one cup only. Last night I went out and had the restaurant put risotto in the blender! Ate a cup and had one glass of wine and it was great! Weight lost: 20 pounds.

    Gnawing Pain in Stomach

Leener.. you mentioned Soy Protein. For what it's worth, I've learned that this stuff can cause a lot of gas problems. Soy is a vegetable, and the body doesn't break down and absorb vegetable Proteins as well as it does animal protein (whey is animal protein). So what happens is the undigest protein goes on to the large intestine where it rots and creates gas and GI discomfort. From my post about protein: "Although considered complete proteins, the human body does not possess the necessary enzymes to break down vegetable proteins and most of it ends up in the colon where bacteria gain access to it. Research has shown that most of the gas once thought to come from the Fiber found in vegetarian sources of protein such as Beans, is now known to be caused by the undigested vegetable protein instead." http://lapbandtalk.com/showthread.php?t=14199 You might try switching to a whey protein. And, as I mentioned before, there are clear Whey Protein drinks. Nature's Best, Zero - Ready to Drink. And I completely agree with GeezerSue about not drinking Metimucil. Have you tried Milk of Magnesia? I was so stopped up I hadn't gone in days. I took the MoM a couple of nights in a row and it finally worked without a lot of gas, cramping or diahrrea. I hope you feel better soon. Hang in there.. it does pass. I promise

    Protein Powder?

Soy Proteins are vegetable proteins. The body only absorbs about 30% of the ingested amount. Whey proteins are animal proteins and the body absorbs about 80-90% of them. Quoting the following article on isolates: http://www.bodybuildingforyou.com/health-nutrition/whey-protein-powder-1.htm "Due to the nature of the ion exchange process, the most valuable and health-promoting components are selectively depeleted. Though the Protein content is increased, many of the most important subractions are lost or greatly reduced." So, you can see why soy isolates would have even fewer benefits. You are basically paying a lot for a whole lot of nothing.. except gas pains. This is an excerpt from a NESTA certified training manual for personal trainer certification: "Although considered complete proteins, the human body does not possess the necessary enzymes to break down vegetable proteins and most of it ends up in the colon where bacteria gain access to it. Research has shown that most of the gas once thought to come from the Fiber found in vegetarian sources of protein such as Beans, is now known to be caused by the undigested vegetable protein instead." The beginning of the journey (not yet banded)

I have been researching the lapband and rouxenY for a while. RouxenY is out of the question for me because I and my family are afraid of death. Besides this, I am twenty one years of age! Young, and I highly doubt that the staples will survive until I am 30. (much less 40,50, or however long that I hope to live).. My story: I have ALWAYS been a big girl. I was tormented as a child, and in middle school and at 12 I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome and Pre-Diabetes. Thats a scary thing, and embarrassing thing at twelve years old. I didnt want any doctor telling me about my menstration, and I didnt care about diabetes. I was eating donuts and chocolate milk everyday for lunch, and nothing mattered. at this point I was prescribed glucophage to regulate my bloodsugar and bring my hormones back to normal. :phanvan I remained between 240-220 throughout highschool, but through running and trackpractice and other whatnots, I was able to get down to close to 200 pounds by graduation. :straight (I have been a vegetarian for 9 years as well, but often and always choosing the bad foods):straight:straight:straight Come college, I was suffering from depression and anxiety. I was in a highstress environment because I was going through a very intensive music program at a conservatory. Through an even stricter vegan diet, and from overdoing things at the gym, I had lost 20 more pounds and gotten myself down to 180-182. I couldnt understand why I couldnt get a boyfriend. This was the thinnest I had ever been, and it was unhealthy. I was weak, my hair was coming out, and I was constantly exausted from overexercising, low self esteem and not getting enough food, and not any protein at all. :rolleyes that very year I came down with a generative joint disease called rheumatoid arthritis/ or rheumatism. I suffered.. boy oh boy did I suffer. Slowly, I couldnt walk, or do anything. I had to quit music, and redefine myself completely. I was completely depressed, however I had gained a boyfriend who didnt care at all about my weight. :clap2: quickly I gained 60 pounds, and my rheumatologist made me go on prednisone for a while, and I my metabolism slowed to a crawl because I could not walk. Me knees got shot, I ended up having to have surgery on both elbow joints, my wrist lost the space between the bones, and my fingers swelled up. Ic ouldnt even bear a sheet on me at night, and when people accidently bumped into my swollen body I would scream bloody murder. this was 2004-2005.. i flunked several quarters at school, and i was just a mess. although I am doing much better. I cannot stand for more than an hour or so at a time. i can no longer run because my left ankle needs surgery and physical therapy. my metabolism is terrible and even though i am eating normally, i still have issues with foods, and I still have been steadily putting on the weight. that is my story. it is ridiculous.

  23. hi guys, I am not banded but I am definitely considering it and have a few consultations with various doctors scheduled this month, but I wanted to ask what kind of eating habits did you have before being banded and whether or not you have been successful at losing the weight. If you have been successful at weightloss, are you where you hoped? Has anyone ever wished they had gotten at Reux-en-Y instead for the dumping syndrome? I personally have pretty screwy eating habits. In order to lose weight I have to be on a vegetarian/vegan diet (which i am off of now because of weakness). It is the ONLY time I have ever had success (a -60 lb success at that). The temptation that follows me is unbearable unless i completely restrict it out of my life. (and its still bad unless I have exercising like crazy - which I no longer can do because of degenerative joint disease/rheumatism) i wanted to know, can you guys resist getting 3 meximelts at taco bell instead of 2? are you still hungry or Truely full after restriction with just ONE taco? are you full, or FULL - like "this will do me for the rest of the night full"? what about golden coral? can you really fit down everything you would have desired? When did you stop desiring as much food as before? Is it a real desire? thanks

    help!!!

princess_n_thep ~ I am surprised that you think she did not ask US to donate based on her first post and you think that by being skeptical is being judgmental. Like I said, and as others had suggested, there are much better ways to raise funds. Unfortunately, we do live in a society of scammers....I know b/c I do a lot on E-Bay and I've seen a lot. I recently had a guy that contacted PayPal saying I didn't ship an item 3 mos ago. Needless to say, I expected this some day and had documentation and contacted PayPal immediately. It didn't go any further. I would REALLY encourage you to donate and support this effort if you feel so strongly about it. More power to you and her! I for one, cannot afford to take the risk of donating to something of this nature where the questions are too many. Cashley & Doty said it all very well. My mother does a lot on the computer and finds PayPal challenging at times. Don't you think if someone has "never worked a day in her life", her words, has something to offer skill wise to earn some money? I guess I've been with E-Bay and PayPal for too long to be so eager to support this idea. I have had numerous of attempted scams that have come across my e-mail. In addition, I have been a victim of identity theft. Does that make me judgmental or not open-minded? I think not. Just last week, my husband and I pulled over to offer a homeless man a chicken dinner from Lee's. He thanked us, but turned us down b/c he was a vegetarian. It was a good lesson to teach our children to at least TRY to help those in need. The Lord is good to us and I would help anyone with anything if I was able. I have a very kind and tender heart, but I do have to protect myself and family first.

    Shocking Information (HRT - production)

I knew about the horses, so sad. But we are not powerless to stop it. Tell other women about it . As long as there is a market , they will continue to do this. Consumers need to know what is really going on, just go to http://www.goveg.com/factoryFarming.asp or http://www.petatv.com/inv.html http://www.kentuckyfriedcruelty.com/anderson-vid.asp?c=kfc956eb2 http://www.animalactivist.com/vegetarian.asp and look at all the videos and read the articles. Personally after reading and viewing the info above I became a vegetarian. About a year ago, and just coming off the Atkins diet! My feelings were that after knowing what goes on now, and if I still eat meat/purchase KFC, etc then I am part of the abuse. Knowing what I know and then giving my money to it makes me a part of it, and I just couldn't do that. My heart and concious drew a line I could not cross. If someone decides they want to eat meat, it's still important to keep it humane, disease and filth free, and there is so much you can do to help make that happen. It's good for you, good for the animals and how can you argue with that? :-)
