Insurance doesn't cover bariatric surgery...now what?
Bandedbut replied to LMorales's topic in Insurance & Financing
This is something you would need to talk to your HR dept about. My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that each company negotiates their rates with the insurance company, and there are things they can choose to not cover in order to keep the costs down for ALL employees. They can't just add it for one person. Bariatric surgery is getting more common, so maybe your employer might choose to add it durning the next open enrollment period, or, to cut rising costs, eliminate services. Unless you have a life event (like loosing your job, marriage, birth of a child etc) your husband can only add you to his plan during open enrollment. And your company's plan can't change until the next open enrollment. Most companies that wouldn't be effective until Jan 1 2024 (but not all, my company has open enrollment in the spring) Find out first if your husbands plan even covers it, and what the deductible/co-pay would be. You could start all the presurgery requirements now, as that usually takes about 6 months. Sounds like IF, everything works out, the soonest you could have the surgery under insurance (and a lot of things could go wrong to not align) would be Jan 2024. Or, do self pay and you could be recovering in a matter of weeks. There are low to 0 interest medical financing plans, and you can even pay those bills with an HSA or FSA card. It all depends on your financial situation and patience. I totally understand your disappointment, I felt the same way when I found out it wasn't covered under my insurance. I had determined the VSG was the right path for me and had my hopes up, and was crushed. I didn't want to wait any longer, and self pay was the best option. -
Don't overthink it. You will be concentrating on getting your fluids and protein in. Walk around as much as you can to shift the gas pains. Sleep when you are not doing any of these things. Drinking different temperatures can help. Your second week is so much easier. Everyone gets nervous, we are human and are built to fear the unknown. The hospital staff will put you at ease. Good luck

Hydration, walking, and protein. That’s pretty much all you need to know! Have a variety of sugar free drinks, broth, and popsicles at home, every ounce counts and your body needs it! Some people (including myself) struggle with drinking plain water right after surgery so having the variety definitely helped. My surgeon wanted two 20 minute walks a day as soon as I went home. When the weather was bad I went to Walmart, Kohl’s, or target to do some laps so that I could get 20 minutes of walking in. Protein shakes and yogurt were about all I had for the first two weeks, so maybe pick out a few different kinds so that it doesn’t get monotonous. Best of luck!!

Bread after gastric sleeve?
Jeanniebug replied to Krasavitza's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The thing is, your pouch is tiny. Bread expands. It's a struggle to get all your protein in, when you're just eating meat. Adding bread to your pouch is going to take up all the room and you won't be able to eat your protein. Protein is vital for healing. Eat your meat first. Then your vegetables. If you still have room, then you can have your bite of bread. I'm 4.5 months out and I still won't eat fluffy bread. I'll eat half a slice of Lavash bread, or a small tortilla, but not an actual slice of bread. It just takes up too much room. We're now eating to nourish and fuel our bodies. Yes, food should taste good and be pleasurable, but we aren't eating for pleasure anymore. We're eating with purpose, now. -
High Protein Alternatives - Cereal, Chips, etc.
TRAVELRN replied to BrigitteLM's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Try not to focus on future eating. Take it a day at a time, follow your meal plan and get your fluids in. Getting your protein and water in will be your focus for a while. Stick to your plan. -
this is EXTREMELY NORMAL. you will have plateaus all through your journey. Follow your meal plan don't skip meals, get your protein AND water.

2/21/23 Sleeves - how is your recovery going?
Alisa Lynn replied to Victoria_Faith's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had sleeve surgery 12/19. I have only lost 35 lb. I now weigh 195. I am definitely losing inches for I am down to sizes. But I am not losing weight! I am becoming frustrated that it is taking so long. I am extremely tired I continue to drink a lot of protein shakes and protein but I do not exercise. I am so tired after work. I am just concerned that I am not losing weight. But happy I am losing inches. -
So mine has started and I'm miserable. I don't want anything. My headache is so bad it's insane. They say 5 to 6 servings I can maybe stomach 3 . Water has been my best friend so far. And I know the Protein is important I wish we could skip it though tbh all together cause ugh. 😩 wish me better luck on day 3 cause right now this is a nightmare.

feeling sick on pre-op diet
Dfidelman replied to heather14's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ugh same. I've only been able to get 2 protein shakes down and 2 to 3 waterbottles and I'm now on day 3 writing this. It's 4:51am right now and I can't go back to bed. Head still kills and I got to work til the 10th to make sure I have all the money I need. I can't stop thinking to myself how is this possible. Why out of all the vids out there did they not tell us this stuff? It's always It's hard cause you can't eat. What about this?! I'm wondering if I could get a doctor's not just in case cause ugh I just want to sleep it away. First day I slept from 530pm to 1030am. Ugh it sucks. I hope it's as worth it as everyone says. -

1. Premier Protein Chocolate Almond Cereal (it is actually whey protein isolate flakes), it contains 20g protein in one cup of it. I like to mix it with Failife Nutrition chocolate shake (30g of protein). 2. Premier Protein Pancakes (I bought it in Sam's club) - I like it either with crunchy peanut butter or sugar-free raspberry jelly. 3. Oikos Pro yogurt (20g protein). -

Insurance doesn't cover bariatric surgery...now what?
LMorales replied to LMorales's topic in Insurance & Financing
This is exactly right. I have contacted my employer and crossing my fingers regarding a rider or them adding this. At the same time I don't want to hold my breath. Exploring my other options and trying to pick myself back up. -

High Protein Alternatives - Cereal, Chips, etc.
BrigitteLM posted a topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
My surgery is on March 8th so I'm a long way off from eating real/regular food but as I was in my nutrition course I really did feel healthier prioritizing protein intake. Just felt like I always gravitated towards carbs naturally previous to my nutrition course. That being said, does anyone recommend higher protein alternatives to foods they used to eat? I'll start with some! I do like how crunchy and textural chips are so I stocked up on Quest Protein chips - usually b/w 17-20 g protein for a small bag. Definitely not the same but an interesting alternative. Then I recently came across Magic Spoon - it's a 13 g protein bowl of cereal. I have not tried this before and wondering if anyone else has? Any other alternatives to recommend? -
How did you do on your pre-op diet?
Arabesque replied to mcipanda's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The withdrawal from caffeine, sugar, etc. can be awful. Headaches, shakes, cold sweats, …. and the craving for them can be greater. Thankfully the first week is usually the worst. My surgeon recommends different diets for different patients but the all shake diet is known as hell week in his office. I’d done the shake diet twice before (two shake meals & one low carb, low fat meat & vegetable/salad meal) so I was much relieved when the dietician said I was to do keto for the two weeks. No calorie requirement or macro goals just high fat, high protein, low carb, low sugar. (She also said keto was a good way to kick start my weight loss but not as a long term diet.) I lost about 5kgs. -
How did you do on your pre-op diet?

I had protein shakes (I think 4 or 5/day, unlimited broth, SF jello, tea coffee). The limited choices of liquids was actually liberating, for some reason.... -
How did you do on your pre-op diet?
mcipanda replied to mcipanda's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Omgosh, on day 13 your surgery got post poned?? That must’ve been frustrating! I’m really happy you were able to have the surgery eventually. Do you remember what you had for your liquid diet? Was it all protein shakes or other? I’m thinking I may move to liquids the last three days. Just wanted to see what helped you 😊 -
LGS 2/15/23. I’m struggling mentally with all of this. I have regrets and wish I never had this surgery. I’m probably grieving about all of this. It just seems so miserable to watch everyone else enjoy their food and while I can only have pureed eggs and such in such small portions. If not I’ll end up sick. I’ve not had nausea or vomiting but trying to time things where I’m not eating and drinking at the same time and waiting 40 minutes after a meal to drink and trying to hit the hydration goals and trying to get the 60 grams of protein in. It takes eating all day to hit the protein targets but if I’m eating all day I fail at meeting my water goals and the reverse is true when trying to get my protein in. I’m allergic to artificial sweeteners and dairy products so I cant do the shakes, the water based protein drinks make me feel ill, and I’m not at week 4 where I can have soft foods. I’m just hoping all of this will be worth it and it will get better. I completed 2 years of therapy before having the sleeve and started at 211 lbs with a bmi of 37. I think I probably could have chosen a less restrictive option and accomplished the weight loss goals. I need encouraging. I’m not happy ever when I have to put food or drinks to my lips. Additionally its difficult because you cant heat food in the microwave but eating slowly causes it to be cold and so it’s just a struggle I didn’t anticipate which frustrates me terribly because I’m always hungry and always turned off by food because of all this. Pureed food is better than the liquids but Im just not happy and need a safe space to vent. Otherwise things are progressing as expected my t week post op appointment I was down 15 lbs so that’s a win but again I hope this gets better. Is there anyone at least 2 -3 months out from surgery and how’s it going?
-
Had my sleeve surgery 2/28/23 4 days post op today definitely less pain from day one. I agree with everyone else on here saying they were able to tolerate the shakes before surgery and now are struggling. They’re very thick and taste plant based to me. I had my first cream soup yesterday and it kept me full all day. Im not getting in all the protein and water intake that I need because i get full so fast. What are some of your favorite soups & shakes? I can not wait to hit the pureed stage.

Post-Op Liquid Diet -- too much fluid? Is that a thing?
CK77 replied to Victoria_Faith's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
No you are fine. Yesterday I barely got 2 ounces of protein in. Well today I got 60 grams in plus my fluid. I think we are doing good. The restriction will come when we start to eat. Sent from my LM-Q730 using BariatricPal mobile app -
March 23 buddies yet?
GeorgieLynn replied to ceri84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If it is not too difficult or stressful for you, I say go and enjoy yourself but drink your protein prior and enjoy sipping on your teas, broths, etc while they eat and you all socialize. I am on day 10 of 14 and took my son to dinner for his birthday last week with family and did exactly that and was so glad that I went and enjoyed myself. It didn't bother me at all nor anyone else as they understood (many of whom I didn't feel the need to explain the full situation but simply if asked why I wasn't eating I explained I had an upcoming medical procedure and was on a very limited diet. No questions asked. Enjoy yourself! You can't stop living! This is only the beginning of life-long changes when we will not be able to eat as others do. Good luck and be strong. This is your life, live it! ❣️ -
Post-Op Liquid Diet -- too much fluid? Is that a thing?
Victoria_Faith posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I know that a lot of programs do things differently. My program calls for 2 weeks post-op liquids only, followed by 2-3 weeks of pureed, before moving on to soft foods. I am near the end of my second week, and have been using beef and chicken bone broths along with cream soups to keep some flavor sliding past my pallet. My question is - Why does it feel like I can have an endless flow of liquids going into me? How does this tie into actual food, where I've been told that I will be able to eat a maximum of 2 tbsp of something like scrambled eggs? Maybe I'm not understanding how liquids don't rest in my pouch anymore? I'm getting in like 70+ oz a day between protein shakes, gatorade zero, water, and broths/cream soups. I feel like this is too much - am I doing something wrong? -
Insurance doesn't cover bariatric surgery...now what?
Bandedbut replied to LMorales's topic in Insurance & Financing
My insurance didn't cover it either, as Catwoman mentioned, your employer needs to add it to their plan, and I was told no going around that. I ended up as self pay, and using my HSA savings. Because I have a high deductible plan, I figured even if I was able to go the insurance route, it would cost me 7K in my deductible, and I would lose months and months of time jumping through insurance hoops. There are clinics I'm sure all over the country that specialize in just bariatric surgery, I went through West Medical in LA and had a great experience, it was $10K and only took 3 weeks from 1st consult to surgery. Mexico clinics start around $5k, and while I know some have had great experiences that route, I just wasn't comfortable. It's very possible you have a local bariatric Dr. that takes self pay. There are also financing options with credit cards like Care Payment that offer no/low interest rates. Don't let money hold you back!
