    Gastric bypass or sleeve

The bypass, because my gerd is really bad, and sleeve gave me that including a hiatal hernia so I go this Tuesday to revise to the bypass. Sent from my SM-J337P using BariatricPal mobile app

    October Surgery Roll Call

10-22-19 Revision from Lapband to sleeve.
  3. Yes, I am in Madison and getting revision done at UW! I was scheduled 11/11 but am selling old house on 11/1 and closing on new house on 12/2 and didn't want to do it while living in in a corporate apartment, nor did I want to move into new house with possible post-op restrictions. So I rescheduled to 12/16. The code on my pre-authorization paperwork for the procedure is just for RNY. It doesn't list revision and when I look up the CPT it just describes the procedure. So perhaps revision is a modifier to the original code so that's why no language about it. With your plan if you meet the requirements it looks pretty good. My plan had a comorbidity requirement but I also didn't meet the 35 or 30 BMI so maybe that's why they did it as a non-bariatric reason, even though I am obviously a bariatric patient. Good luck! I am going through Dr. Greenberg. The facility is just a few miles from both of my houses so I am grateful for all that. I had my original VSG done in Mexico because work didn't have WLS coverage at the time. All of the pre-op nutritional sessions and all that are annoying but at least I don't have to do the supervised diet like most of the people having surgery in my groups. Being on a restricted diet with my original stomach was torture. It is much easier for me with a sleeve and ironically I don't have to do it.
  4. Thanks, JohnnyMadison and SorryNameTaken! This is going to be an interesting journey--since my last post, the certificate of medical coverage came out for our plans (local government employee, uniform benefits... a blessing and curse!) and they are covering bariatric surgery and the only requirement is to have a BMI over 35 and to be considered medically necessary. So, this is either going to be really easy or really hard, but I won't know what kind of approach we're taking until I can start the program. There is no language in there regarding revisions, which does give me a pause, but if I meet the requirements and they prior-authorize the work, then I assume we're good to go. That's what I'm hoping, anyway. P.S. JohnnyMadison, nice to see another Wisconsinite present--I presume you're also in Madison? Small world? Did you go through UW for your revision? I have only heard positive things!
  5. I just had my band removed Monday and converted to sleeve. I had my band for 7 years. For me I lost about 80 but gained 30 back. I had it revised once due to vomiting because of my gallbladder. At that point they stitched it to my muscle and removed my gallbladder which now I wish they hadn’t stitched it to my muscles.I agree with the others in quality of life is diminished with the band for me. It took my surgeon 2 hours just to remove and get through scar tissue from the band. Sadly that means my recovery from this surgery is longer than most. I hope all goes well for you.

    Nervous about revision

@mlbdl I decided at this time to not revision to Gastric Bypass. My gerd started with bad eating and stress. I first needed to work on my eating and stress level. My acid reflux is under control with a PPI. I still have little spikes of acid but I'm down to a Level 1 on a scale 1 to 10. I have been eating extremely slow and chewy my food completely. I cut out coffee and gerd triggered foods. It has helped 100% I am giving myself until June 2020 that would put me at 3 years post op to see if the gerd has improved. For me, diet changes and less stress have helped me. Another surgery, especially the bypass is major. I need to first exhausted all other options before undergoing the Gastric Bypass. Let's stay in touch. I am praying for your surgery and help.
  7. I always had problems with getting stuck, I just dealt with that, but right around the 10 year mark I started getting insane nausea and reflux with projectile vomiting instead of just getting stuck. My band appears to be in place despite these sudden onset of symptoms. Even if something is wrong with mine, they don't make it anymore, so there are no replacement parts and I'd have to get it out. I honestly feel like my quality of life has gone down over the past year, so I'm choosing to revise. That said, there are plenty of people that have had their bands in for well over 10 years and are still doing quite well. The thought is that they should stay in lifelong. I'd be interested in knowing how many revisions are because the band itself aged and failed versus the other symptoms causing people to seek revision.

    Nervous about revision

I’m interested to know what you decided and how you are doing. I’m revising sleeve to bypass in November for GERD. I am aspirating acid into my lungs, so it has to be done. I’m on 2 GERD meds, I eat tums like candy, and 4 allergy meds for allergy symptoms (for instance, coughing up acid into my lungs) that the 2 Bariatric surgeons, ENT, and allergist all have concluded are made worse, if not mostly caused by, the GERD.
  9. I’m supposed to be having my sleeve revised to a bypass in November due to GERD. I have a hiatial hernia for the 3rd time and the surgeon as well as the 2nd opinion surgeon says not to repair the hernia, just revise to bypass. Evidently my cough is acid aspirating into my lungs, and most of my allergy symptoms are from the acid. This is on top of the regular nasty acid symptoms. I had originally asked for the bypass because I already had GERD and I knew that VSG could make GERD worse or cause it if you don’t have it. The surgeon said that if I had another 100# to lose he’d recommend the bypass but he said I probably have a hernia. He’d fix it, therefore fixing the GERD. So, 3 hernias later, I’m revising to a bypass, and I’m terrified. I’ve been very pleased with my sleeve except for the GERD getting worse. So... 3.5 years later I’m finally getting what I originally asked for, but now I have to go through a 3rd surgery (VSG/hernia; hernia again; now bypass) to do it. I should have just pushed for the bypass at the beginning and I’d be done with it.
  10. I am just getting on to these forums. I just had my revision surgery on 9/26/19. I am interested in your Revision Journey.
  11. Hi, I'm getting a lap band removed with a RNY revision in November and I was wondering if any of y'all that have had the bypass are vegetarians? What is your "go-to" protein? Thanks!

    Butt flap - Anyone have?

YES! I have it and I'm wondering how much worse it will get after my revision. I honestly haven't been doing anything to try to fill it out as of yet, so hopefully someone will have some great tips on exercises. I looked into beach body's Brazilian butt, but never ended up doing it. Youtube probably has some good workouts too.
  13. HI All! I dont see many like me here! I had Lap Band in 2005, Sleeve in 2010 and now mini Bypass 30 days ago. My lap band from the start hated me. Pain, vomiting and not really losing anything. So...back I went to have it removed. When they took out the band they had trouble giving me a good sleeve which resulted in limited weight loss. Now, I have the mini. Im confused on review of revision surgeries. I hear they dont work, you wont lose much, you will regret it. However, I am down 30 pounds! Seems like a good start! Any one else been down this road? I would love someone to chat with about it!

    Is lap band that bad?

This is pretty darn common, which are also the reasons I had mine removed and had a revision. You're right, very few people keep their lap band their entire life without having a revision. The band erodes into the stomach and causes a lot of problems. Regain is also an issue. My doctor said very few doctors will do the band anymore because of all of the side effects. It's just not the best decision for weight loss. It was a huge waste of money. I'm very happy with my revision, and excited for you to also have a better life without the band. Best wishes to you.
  15. I'm 65 and I'm getting a 10 year old failed lap band revised to a RNY in November. I was worried about my age but my doctor isn't too concerned about it other than having me get a cardiac clearance done in addition to the medical one.
  16. I think it is ridiculous that if you need to have a revision to a bariatric procedure from a failed initial one that you have to wait to regain all your weight before you can get another! If you met the criteria for the first procedure and had surgery and now need another the insurance company should be satified that the patient is still a candidate. Most of us had our first surgery because of health considerations and to expect us to regain all that weight to have the revision surgery is unhealthy and a waste (waist!) of time. I have to have a lap band removed and fortunately (or unfortunately) I have already regained enough weight and have two new comorbidities so I don't have to gain even more to get my revision.

    Is lap band that bad?

I've had a lap band for 10 years. All went well for the first 7. Now I have NO fill in it and still get food stuck in it constantly and can only eat what my doctor calls "squishy" food, so my weight is creeping back on because those are the higher calorie less nutritious food. So because of the constant sliming and vomiting I am having the lap band removed in November with a revision to a bypass and I can't wait! Evidently about 30% of people with lap bands over 10 years old have problems with them and many doctors will no longer do them.
  18. I’m trying to rally round some more specific support for people that are Sleeve to RNY (either pre or post op RNY). Not sure the best way to do this. I did create a group.... anyone interested? It’s called “Revision Journey.” Anyone interested?

    Third Revision...

@Caela88 yes, i knew someone she had the lapband for a few years - erosion, then sleeve - heartburn - revision to RNY haven't seen her in quite awhile - hopefully all is well. i don't know how often this happens, but for the above reasons it's sad, but understandable is a 3rd revision in your future? hope all goes well whatever you do☺️ good luck kathy

Tricare’s website doesn’t list revisions as a covered service but it doesn’t....NOT say that. It just has “unlisted procedure” as a non covered. If you pick a DS procedure instead of another rny it may pay. Definitely call Tricare and see what they can do for you. 🤞🤞

The last few weeks pre surgery last forever

I'm the opposite. It feels like I have hit the ground running and it is coming so stinking fast. I suspect the week of surgery will go really slow, but then again I have a ton of appointments that week, so it may go just as fast. @april042019 I'm afraid to ask about the catheter!! It completely freaks me out too. I'm a revision, so my surgery is going to be a bit longer than standard, so I'm just so sure they will say yes and I just don't think I want to know! 🤣 I haven't even met my surgeon because my original surgeon was booked out way into November and my insurance won't cover surgery starting November 1, so I had to switch to the other doctor in the practice. So naturally, most of my questions are about him or things about my pre-op testing. My x-ray showed I have a kidney stone just hanging around and no one told me, so I'd like to ask about that. My new doctor does robotic surgeries, so I want to know if mine is going to be robotic. And of course the important questions like, "Can I wear toenail polish?" I also want to know if I'll have an incision in my bellybutton, I can't stand the thought of that, it weirds me out so much. Whenever anything pops in my mind, I just write it down to take with me. Just do that and you'll surely have a good list of things to ask!

Call your insurance company. Ask if they cover revisions and what is their criteria for approval. You can’t figure out why you are gaining weight? Are you eating your bariatric food plan? Are you logging your food? Are you staying within your weight loss calories and macros? Exercise and hydration? Your not alone in having a weight gain years out. (i also had it my third year and worked it back off) 33 pounds is easier to work off than a 50 70 or 100+ gain. If you want to go the revision route thats fine. If your interested here are some links on this forum that may help. https://www.bariatricpal.com/search/?q=weight gain https://www.bariatricpal.com/search/?q=revision https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/425354-the-importance-of-doing-the-head-work/?tab=comments#comment-4776743

Hi, I had my R and Y in 3/2014: I lost a lot of weight, however it’s been now tricking back... can figure out why! So my BMI is like 27.5 and realistically I need to get off 33 lbs My question? Will tricker pay for the endoscopic gastric revision? Does anyone know what it costs? And will tricker pay for any revisions? Thanks

    September 2019 🍂🍁

I started pureed yesterday and had refried beans for breakfast, cottage cheese a couple of hours later, a protein shake for lunch and tuna salad for dinner. Since I had a revision the chewing part is already a habit and everything went down well. You will get there and it will e habit before you know it!
