Unflavored protein powder, just started full liquids, how do you use it?
Bufflehead replied to The Laughing Cat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You can stir unflavored protein powder into lots of things: soup, broth, yogurt, and cottage cheese, for example. If you are allowed to eat things like mashed potatoes or oatmeal, you can use it there too. But keep the amounts small or it will taste funky. For example, I used a half of a scoop of the Syntrax Nectar in my chai tea (approx. 8 ounces of tea). Be careful mixing into anything hot -- you need to test it with a food thermometer and make sure it is under 140 degrees or the protein will denature and clump, which is truly nasty. I find it works best with things that have a pretty strong flavor of their own and which are more on the savory side than sweet. -
So my pre-op starts tomorrow. Not sure how much it differs from US type pre-ops. This is my schedule Breakfast 1 glucerna coffee/tea no sugar or milk\ 1 natural fruit juice no sugar Snack Diet Yogurt or Kumis or Diet Ice Cream Aromatica (mint leaves and fruit in hot water) Diet Soda lunch liquid Soup with veggies & beef, chicken, or seafood sugar free Jello dinner Repeat of lunch The one difference I do see is that my diet soda intake is not limited and I can have as much tea or aromatica as necessary. I have to drink at least 7 glasses of Water per day. I am not a big soda drinker, so I can not see over indulging in that. But I see many aromaticas on my 15 day journey. What does your pre-op consist of?

I had surgery 1 week ago today. I was on clear liquids until yesterday with no protein. Yesterday I was able to add to that diet cottage cheese, yogurt, protein shakes, pudding, mashed veggies, mashed potatoes, and so on. Basically a pureed diet. I know I should not weig myself too often, but I could not resist. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to have gained back a pound. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it just a reaction to having basically no calories to finally having some. Everything was low fat or fat free. I am freaking out that I will gain back the 12 pounds I lost and confused how eating only 800 calories can make you gain a pound. Thanks.

Starting my pre op liquid diet on Tuesday and I'm so scared!
kw2walker replied to allysonk2009's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
I stopped drinking coffee three weeks ago. I've been doing so manning things in stages. Soda was my biggest. When I knew I was serious that was the first thing I gave up. It's been about a year since I had soda. I LOVE Pepsi and to give that up was hard. I found I only drink coffee at work. So I figure since I don't drink it on the weekends I could stop now. Lol Working around food would be hard I imagine, if you think about it select from the kids meal. Their choices are smaller in quantity and are better. Apple slices over fries, yogurt over milkshake, etc., but carry your food with you or make your Protein shakes and sip throughout the day. You'll do fine. We are all nervous but once we get over the pre surgery diet hump, the road to success is paved, we just need to walk the walk. -
Pre-op yogurt choice...is this possible?!
Butterthebean replied to Chunky_Dunk's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
Frozen yogurt kinda defeats the purpose of the whole diet...which is to shrink your liver. Sugar will prevent that from happening. And an oversized liver during surgery can lead to .....at least your surgery getting cancelled and at most....death. So....not being a medical professional but knowing what I know about this surgery....I'd say please get a second opinion before embarking on your frozen yogurt diet. -
'twas the night before surgery and all through the house...

I am not using any protein shakes or liquid protein at the moment, though I do recommend checking out Isopure drinks (available at vitamin shops / GNC) if you're looking for an alternative to shakes. My surgeon does not support liquid protein drinks/shakes in general, though the nutritionist says to use them in a pinch if I'm not able to get protein in "the old fashioned way". So far, the old fashioned way hasn't been a problem for me. My surgeon starts us on pureed foods right after surgery. For me, that means the Vitamix is getting a serious workout. My current favorite protein sources are: homemade spicy chicken taco/burrito meat with salsa homemade chicken salad cheesy scrambled eggs refried beans greek yogurts of all flavors fortified chocolate milk (1C skim milk + 3T of powdered milk + 3T sugar-free Hershey's syrup = delicious!) PB2 (powdered peanut butter or powdered chocolate peanut butter) I will also run soups through the blender as well, though I am happier with more flavorful options above. Hope this helps! -

I was banded on 3/4 and I cheated a little yesterday. I used my pointer finger to scoop up Key Lime Mango Pie. It was so delicious. It was a small piece and I only ate the pudding & whip cream. It was such a pleasure to have some thickness in my mouth besides, BROTH!@$!! I think it even filled me up. I wasn't hungry for the rest of the night. Since my preop I have lost 20lbs. and I keep loosing, I just can't handle the broth clear liquid thing no more. On Tuesday will be 2 weeks post op and I can go FULL liquid diet, which includes creamy Soups and yogurt. But I have a strong feeling, this FULL Liquid diet will begin this weekend, I ll just do it slowly and carefully. I just keep telling myself this is TEMPORARY, you will soon be on solids and on your way to loosing more weight and making nutritious food choices. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK -
Hmmm this is interesting. I was having a conversation with another co worker who is a workout freak and he was telling me that his regimen before working out/lifting is oats with either some fruit or organic raw honey. I thought that meal sounded really heavy before working out but didn't think of eating it earlier. I usually do half an apple with nut butter or I might do greek yogurt with some home made granola in it.

Sleevers 15th September to 21st September Check in
2late4bed replied to knzt's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My surgery date was September 17, so tomorrow is my surgiversary, too. So far I've lost 34 pounds. I would NEVER have been able to lose this weight without my sleeve. I couldn't even make it through the 2 week pre op diet without having a moment of weakness here and there. (I lost 10 pounds but gained 2 back during a cookout we had) Now, when I get hungry I eat but only very small amounts. For anyone curious as to what I've been eating. .....I eat the following items but not every day. Cottage cheese, string cheese, Dannon Light and Fit Greek Yogurt (the caramel apple is to die for, lol), sugar free pudding with Unjury chocolate protein powder mixed in, Progresso Light Chicken and Cheese Enchilada soup with Unjury unflavored 1/3 packet protein powder mixed in, tuna fish, Egg beater Southwestern style egg white omelet with grated cheese , boiled eggs, and occasionally an Atkins bar or treat but usually only about once a week. I never seem to finish anything and usually put it in the fridge for later but end up throwing it out. Appetite is easily curbed with just a few bites....Also, I write everything that I eat down in a notebook along with the time I ate it and the calories, carbs, and protein. That way I can keep track of what I am eating and how many carbs and protein I'm getting. I keep my daily carbs under 20 grams a day. Well, that's about it. Good luck, everybody! -
To clarify my standard day is two protein shakes and a yogurt. After that it's what I can tolerate. I get around 70 of protein a day. Sometimes more.

A few replies to this topic made me wrinkle my brow a little so I'll just quickly touch on them and voice my opinion. 1. Yes, losing the weight is the desired result of any WLS procedure. "What's the problem?" the problem is starvation isn't going to result in healthy long term weight loss and at only 300-600 cals a day, the body will begin to starve. Fat will be stored, not lost. 2. Calories in = calories out is an archaic way of thinking when it comes to weight loss. It seems that easy, right? Well if it were we wouldn't need to put any other nutrition facts on food labels and doctors and nutritionists would need to set guidelines for fat/protein/etc.They'd just say "Eat this many calories a day and burn at least this many a day and you'll lose this much weight." It doesn't work that way. 100 calories worth of skinless chicken breast will do a different thing to my body than 100 calories of full fat ice cream. All calories are not created equal. 3. The first few weeks after surgery I couldn't manage to get down much more than about a half a yogurt and a Protein shake once or twice a day. It was stressful. I was frustrated. I was tired. Walking my dog down the front path of my apartment complex wiped me out. That was temporary. I'm now running 4-6 miles 3x a week, and exercising for 90 minutes or so in the gym lifting relatively heavy weights on days in between. I very rarely break 1000 cals a day in food, but I've worked out 1100 calories in a run. My Fitness Pal diary entires are skewed because I track my food as it's served to me, and 99% of the time, I don't finish ANYTHING. I dont try to increase my calories if I'm not hungry. That's why I had surgery; to stop me from cleaning my plate and the two next to me. If you're not hungry, it will be harder to increase your calories. Mass gainer will defeat the purpose of what you're trying to achieve from surgery. 4. You will eventually begin to tolerate more food. Your eating frequency may increase due to exercise and your capacity for eating at one sitting will increase. A month post op 2 tbs of Beans and an egg would be all I could tolerate at once. Now I can eat a hamburger patty and apple slices for lunch without much trouble (kids' meal size but still LOL). I agree with some of the suggestions above such as adding yogurt, avocado, cottage cheese etc to smoothies/shakes. Use greek yogurt on foods where you would normally use sour cream; it tastes the same but you're getting protein and less fat. Make your shakes with milk. Try Fairlife; it's filtered milk that has a lot more protein than regular milk. A tad more expensive for a jug but definitely worth it. Add banana slices to your yogurt if you can tolerate banana and if you're allowed fruit. Bananas are naturally a bit fattier than other fruits and have a few more calories, but are still soft for someone who's still pretty new out from surgery. I know exactly what you're going through; I didn't workout to my own satisfaction for over a month after surgery because I was too tired and low on food intake and my body was still very busy healing. You'll get there, i promise.

Cottage cheese ?
Inner Surfer Girl replied to kaysunshine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am not sure what you mean about without a NUT. Do you have a written post-op food plan? For my program, cottage cheese and yogurt were included in my full liquid phase. -
Getting protein in after surgery?
meggiep replied to mnbsleeve's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor wanted me to try and get my Protein in from the very beginning- and I was released with a Clear liquids plus protein drinks order. However, I could hardly drink anything for the first five days- I set the alarm on my phone for every fifteen minutes and measured out 2-4 ounces and drank it. It was tough! At day five drinking became much easier and I started getting all my protein in from that point as I am a complier by nature and I am determined to make this work for me. Though some of the drinks I had liked pre surgery were now disgusting to me I did find a couple that worked and I had at least two a day plus added some greek yogurt and milk to my Soup etc. ( went to thin liquids after a week) and have gotten 70-80 grams since day five. I suggest ordering different samples for sure- I like the Chike meal replacements- they are very tasty and though they have about 8 net carbs they are great for the first few months . I also second Unjury- their unflavored protein is great to add to soup and other things and the chicken soup is an absolute Godsend because believe me you will get really sick of sweet protein drinks! Everyones tastes differ so you wont know what works for you until after- I advise you to have lots of samples on hand and don't stock up too much in case you hate the things you formerly liked. The reason, btw, that my doctor wants you to have protein from the start is to keep your energy up and especially with the lower calories you tend to take in during this phase, to be sure you don't start burning muscle instead of fat. It is never too soon to start the right chemistry for weight loss! Good luck to you! -
Thx I do a lot of pinterest searching. Made my favorite shake yet key lime pie and I made this awesome avocado dip yesterday w cottage cheese and greek yogurt... packed w protein! I've fallen off track a few times but u start over like anything else. Happy losing :-)

Maybe it's just a consistency thing? I eat pudding all the time but if I try even a bite of yogurt I'll gag. There's just something about the consistency of it that I can't deal with.

Hi leaveme....that's too crazy! I guess The Cereal aids the yogurt since its heavier?

I have the same problem with yogurt, especially greek yogurt. When I was first banded I ate it and didn't have any trouble but now that I have restriction it gets stuck. Its strange because I can eat most things as long as I'm careful and it's later in the day but not yogurt! Bums me out cause I love it!

Mine is the 20th! I can have Jello, pudding, greek yogurt, broth and of course Protein drinks. For those I drink Premier Protein, Monarch weight loss stores sell Health Wise powder drinks and other high Protein Drinks and Soups. Sent from my SM-G930V using the BariatricPal App

3 Months Post Op - Gastric Sleeve
Letsdoooooothis posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey there! I had gastric sleeve surgery on 1/31/2020 and here's my story. I attended the free 12 week orientation classes June 2019 thru Sept 2019 at Kaiser. My insurance paid for everything and I had no issues getting approved. My only out of pocket expense was a $100 co-pay for the hospital stay. Wonderful insurance, I know. Luckily, I had no medical issues making me very low risk for the surgery. My surgeon recommended that I get the Bypass and I changed my mind on procedure the day of surgery and switched to the Sleeve. My reasoning is simple...I didn't want to reroute my intestines and I didn't want to chance vitamin deficiencies or dumping syndrome. I fasted on clear liquids the day prior to surgery and it was hell. I had an interview on fasting day and wanted so badly to stuff my face, being an emotional eater (i did get the job!). I went to bed super early the night before surgery because I had a massive headache and mood swings from fasting. My surgery was at 1pm and because of the fasting... I wish I scheduled a morning surgery. The nurse that prepped me for surgery was an idiot. Why on earth would I be able to pee for a pregnancy test after having no fluids since the day before?! I could barely pee and what I did pee didn't make it in the cup lol I got 2 tiny drops of pee in the cup and guess what? It was enough for the pregnancy test. The nurse stuck me 7 times looking for a vein. 7 times. Not just a poke either, like she was really digging. She tried my forearm, the top of my arm, and both hands before calling for help. I woke up in recovery in extreme pain, nausea and was thirsty. I said "I'm thirsty and my stomach hurts really bad" and the nurse said yeah you just had stomach surgery. I wanted to sock her in the face. They made me wait 6 hours for pain medication and water. The night nurses sucked and the day nurses were great. I used the call button every 1-2 hours for more pain meds which they could only give me every two hours. I called after 45 mins and said "did you give me a full or half dose?" lmao but I was serious. The built up gas hurt and my throat was sore. I tried really hard to push the gas out and ended up sharting in my bed. I walked often because I badly wanted to go home. Coming home was nice and I wasn't hungry but still thought about food a lot. I followed the rules and sipped my water and protein shakes and jello. I only took a week off from work because I wanted my routine back. The doctor told me it was too soon because of brain function is usually low this early on. He said "do you want to go back because you're bored or because it's a money thing" and I said "I'm bored as hell" and he said "then no, you can't go back yet." I didn't listen and have no regrets. I started taking the pill form of multivitamin early on because the the ones you eat made me gag. I slowly introduce foods as instructed and my staples are yogurt, protein shakes, salmon, cottage cheese, and veggies. I keep my meals simple. I had my 3 month check up today and I'm on track. I've lost 50 lbs total since surgery. I'm aware that weight loss with the sleeve is slower but I'm okay with it. Each week I can physically feel and see my body changing for the better. I exercise daily by walking 1-2 miles, I feel great, and I have more energy. This is the one and only time that I've had surgery. It was rough at times but overall a good experience. I am happy that I did it and have a long road ahead -
Low carb versus low calorie
SKCUNNINGHAM replied to Jensharley's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I am days away from my six month surgiversary. The only carbs I get are from dairy (yogurt and cottage cheese), veggies, fruit (in my smoothies) and the occasional piece of flatbread/cracker or melba toast with cheese. On special occaisions, I may have 1-2 T of rice or mashed potatoes. I also have indulged in fried hushpuppies once in six months (just a couple). I do not eat white carbs (rice, noodles or bread(white or wheat)). Carbs are what I ate mindlessly before - I would anesthesize myself with them. It is better for me to stay away from them. -
I prefer FAGE, and add a shot of sf torani hazelnut and a few slivered almonds for crunch... also ground flax seed is nice. You can also flavor the plain yogurt with sf pudding mix. You'll want to avoid the yogurts with sugar, of course. You can also add a spoon of no sugar added all fruit preserves, I think. Enjoy!

Suggestions for Protein-rich breakfast
JerseyGirl80 replied to Amanda61082's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm almost a year out and I still drink Protein shakes for breakfast because they're just more convienent and easy to get down in the morning. Most of the time I feel tighter so I sometimes have trouble eating anything solid until lunch time, but I'm not big on breakfast anyway. The band doesn't really allow you to eat in a hurry, if you are going to eat any kind of solid foods you have to find the time for it, it's very difficult to eat on the go, which is also why I normally stick to shakes. These are some breakfasts ideas I have occassionally: Chobani yogurt (you hate yogurt so this doesn't help) Egg beaters, sometimes I'll add some veggies or some low fat meat and cheese 2 hard boiled eggs with a sprinkle of salt with a slice of wheat toast w/ spray butter or just the eggs when you're on the go Breakstone cottage cheese doubles Kashi Go Lean Cereal with silk almond milk or skim milk (some of these cereals have 9-13 grams of protein per serving). sometimes I'll snack on it dry when I don't have time. Smart Ones (weight watchers) breakfast meals, a little high in carbs but still high in protein so once in a while its not so bad. You can pop the sandwiches or wraps in the microwave and just eat them easily on the go. But I would only suggest eating solid foods on the go prior to surgery. Hope this helps!
