  1. Already know I have a hiatal hernia, seems to be a family tradition, dentures, imother and grandfather all diagnosed with them. Will it complicate my future RnY surgery, strongly doubt it, we know it's there, just a little cinching up and I'm all better🌈😜

Hello Again, Long Time No See...

I had a I had a Lap band removal and vsg conversion in June 2014. I started at 252 as my highest weight and 237 as my surgery weighty. My lowest weight was 201. I followed the diet faithfully for almost 2 years and kept the weight off give or take a couple of pounds.. I found that's spinning was my favorite exercise and still is. I was active on and off the 4 years because of complication so with my knee and then plantar fascititis. The last year has been hard cause I my plantar fasciitis and lower back pain. ( which restarted since I've put on weight again) has been really bothering me... so new activities that I love like 5k and 8k runs... well their increasingly difficult to complete. I now weigh 248. Which is above my surgery weight. My GERD isa real problem... I still drink my proteins shakes... take my vitamins.. I eat most things but not in excess because of my sleeve...my weight gain has been a plateau for about for almost 2 years now.. I have not gained and only loose 5lbs here Andy there's and regain it back. I guess give the fact that I really didn't lose as much weight as I expected to with the vsg and gaining all that weight back, has me thinking that the malabsorption piece of weight loss surgery is the tool that would help me final loose weight and be healthier. This extra weight gain is causing me physical pain now and I wann do something about it.

  4. I'm over a year post op from bypass and still have a problem keeping food and drink down. I was on tpn for eight months and now am on a j peg feeding tube. I have had complications every step of the way. I had a lap band in 2005 and removed in 2016 due to slipped and caused severe ulceration so. Gastric bypass done in January 2017 in hospital for ten day due to complications and infection. Went back in hospital in March for over three weeks with mersa. Back in hospital in June for ten days, had pic line put in and tpn started. Back in hospital in August for another ten days with a revision of the entire bypass again due to severe ulcers. Had gall bladder out in October. February back in hospital for over five weeks with pic line infection. Removed pic line and put in j peg feeding tube. Still have severe nausea and pain. Has anyone else been thru anything like this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did I lose too much to qualify?

I have failure of the band by weight loss less than 20% and complications of GERD and esophageal damage caused by the band. Getting the band taken out was already approved, it's the actual conversion that gets a little complicated. They are sending everything into insurance on April 30 🤞

    Can’t make a decision

You can think of the modified DS as a "DS light". It's called the SADi or SIPS or Single Loop DS. It's performed due to less complications, lower surgery risks and less risk of malabsorption (aka fewer vitamins). I had it done in 2014 knowing I'd gain the weight back with a VSG. The VSG portion of the SADi DS takes the weight off and the intestinal bypass portion keeps it off. I don't recommend starting with a VSG than adding the bypass. It means 2 surgeries instead of 1.
  7. I have haital hernia and getting the bypass. Has anyone had complications?

    VSG and GERD

Hey everyone!! I'm a little over 3yrs post OP (3/6/15)...wow that seems like a lifetime ago. I've had struggles over the past year and had a slight regain...about 20-25lbs from my lowest. But my concerns centers around GERD. I have to take omeprazole every single day. If I miss even one day...it's quite literally a fiery hell. I know that GERD is a side effect of complication from vsg, but I see a lot of people having revision surgery for it. So my question is...how do you go about that process? Is it self pay? Does ins cover it? If so, what ins do you have...if that's not too personal? I'm not going to lie...I would LOVE to regain my old restriction...but I'd love to get rid of GERD more. So does anyone have any advise out there? Thanks!!

    LEAVE OF ABSENCE FMLA

I am doing fmla just because I will be out for more than 3 weeksand in car any complications arise. i have STD that I pay into but won’t be needing it. Have been working quite a bit of overtime since November. so I am using all of sick time (which isn’t many hours) and then taking the rest do the time without pay. My job allows you to allocate your sick/PTO anyway you want to. I am lucky
  10. 1. I can't speak for seniors and recovery time. My experience wasn't without complications. I was in the hospital 5 days post op RNY. My bowels did not wake up right away and I developed Shingles for the first time. 2. I was a full on diabetic. I was on 2 different types of insulin and oral medications. I took 2 different statins for my cholesterol, a medication for neuropathy, tramadol for lower back pain, and a muscle relaxer. All of these medications stopped after surgery. My blood sugar completely resolved. My cholesterol is coming down, not completely resolved, but no need for medication at this time. My BP was never high, so I can't speak to that. But if you talk to most people they were able to get off 90% of daily medication. 3. I found that my energy levels came back at about 6 weeks. By 4 weeks, I was exercising lightly. But it wasn't until my diet wasn't restricted and my calories were able to increase that I felt myself. 4. I found that things were different....When I would go out to a restaurant with friends or family, at first, I would get inpatient waiting for everyone to finish their meals. I would feel awkward and uncomfortable with people watching me eat. This changed quickly. It became second nature to me. Friends and family still struggle with understanding my restrictions. My girlfriend asks me if I want a glass of wine, every time I come over! Even my husband still offers me bites of his dessert. My taste buds have changed a lot. I don't crave things like I did before, and when I am hungry (I do get hungry) I am satisfied very easily. I still enjoy food, but not like before. 5. I haven't tried alcohol yet.

    May 2018 RNY Scheduled

Wishing you all great success and quick healing! @Nowheregirl - My surgeon doesn't require a liquid diet THANK GOD! His only requirement is that at least two weeks prior to surgery you adhere to a 1400 calorie diet and that you do not go above your weight recorded at your one month prior appointment. Also, I see you had a band before. I had a band put in in 2002, but had to have it removed in an emergency surgery in 2010 thanks to it eroding into my stomach. I'm just now venturing back into the WLS pool. I hope I have more success and less complications this time around. @Gangidiane58 - Yes, my surgery is covered by my insurance. I started the process in December 2017 and had my surgery originally scheduled in early April (doc was traveling in March so appointments weren't available then).

    Good and Bad

Honestly, I never even thought about the "D" word (which I'm assuming is Death and not Diet). These procedures are so routine now that that isn't even a real risk. I think for VSG it's like 1 in 2500, and like 1 in 400 for any kind of serious complication. That said my general rule post surgery is get your ass out of the Hospital as soon as you can, you will feel much better and you eliminate the risk of hospital infection (which is a much bigger risk IMO) So where are you in the process so far?
  13. I hear all the great stories after surgery and weight loss. I need to know everything! Has anyone had any complaints/complications? Please be honest.
  14. I was out patient however not on fast recovery. My surgeon only did outpatient on Monday mornings in case there were any complications. Could not eat day of surgery, 2 protein drinks and dinner of protein & veg. No juices, no sodas. Post surgery the same as most here, clear liquids to liquids to puree etc.

Long term side effects of vsg

I will be four years out from sleeve surgery this June. Maintained at 130's first two years easily. My third year I had a gain 10 to 15 pounds. I got it back down. Maintaining for me is chasing the same 10 pounds up and down the scale. My health is fantastic, Type one pre surgery my a1c is in the non diabetic range. I'm in the best shape of my life, I am making up for lost time. Only one small complication. Reactive hypoglycemia ( Low blood sugars ) Its manageable with food. I've been managing my blood sugars all my life so this is nothing new.

    Terrified & Excited!

I will admit I am having fears about dying and about complications but am just trying to relax about them--accept them as normal fears before surgery and not a sign that I am making a bad decision. My main reasons for having the surgery are to improve/resolve my diabetes before I get further complications and to improve my mobility so that I can do more of the things I love to do. Those reasons haven't changed, and I still believe that the surgery is my best chance to improve my health. My surgery is two weeks from tomorrow, and I expect the nerves to increase between now and then. May we all have some peace as we move toward our surgery days!

Long term side effects of vsg

    > Me!! I’m going in five years out. I go up and down within 7lbs of my lowest. There are def people with long term complications and side effects... strictures are probably the biggest... but they are def the minority. Some people def regain... sliding back into old eating patterns. You can eat around the sleeve... slider foods like processed carbs, high calorie drinks, etc. but again they are the minority. Any long term side effects? Well my stomach talks A LOT... gurgles and such. There are a few foods that still don’t agree with me—carbonation, rice, untoasted bread—but I shouldn’t be eating those anyhow. And they don’t make me sick they just are somewhat painful to uncomfortable. Would I trade that for the 135lbs I lost, the marathons I run, the size 4 I wear and the blood pressure meds and prediabeties I left behind? Not a chance!

    Terrified & Excited!

I am more concerned about complications than I am about actual death. Part of putting my fears to rest was to ensure I had complete confidence in my surgeon (based on his experience, reviews, empathy towards me and my fears) as well as confidence that the hospital I would be in had a dedicated bariatric unit so I would receive the level of care I needed and deserved. Lots of research helped as well and following all the rules you're given for before and after surgery reduces the risk of complications.

    Can’t make a decision

hi there! I just had the duodenal switch 2 1/2 weeks ago. my surgeon told me this was the best operation for me and that is the most successful one. He says I will be in a size 6 before I know it! So far I have had no complications, I am losing about 1- 2 lbs a day . I am feeling better now. First week was rough. I still cant lift anything or do anything strenuous yet. Good luck to you in whatever decision you make! If you have any questions on the duodenal switch ask me anytime!

    Terrified & Excited!

Honestly the surgeries today have practically no risk of death (I think the number is like one out of twenty-five hundred), so the fear of death from the surgery didn't even cross my mind. Death as a complication of my obesity on the other hand felt like a time bomb with a count down timer that was ticking down, but that I couldn't actually see.
  21. https://skyridgemedcenter.secure.ehc.com/service/bariatric-surgery-procedures-vbloc-neurometabolic-therapy- They are offering this procedure in Colorado now. This article has a few patient reviews and explains the procedure. The lady interviewed lost 50 pounds. The results of course do not compare to the invasive weight loss surgeries we are familiar with here on BP, but I really do like the fact that the complications are LESS because this surgery really only affects the vagus nerve; its really so much less invasive and the changes made surgically are minimal. I think this is a pretty great way to lose weight, if you don't have a lot to lose.

    Question about hiatal hernia

Aw lucky!! I can only hope my hernia recovery will be painless. I agree, I figured the gas pains (shoulder pains) would be the most uncomfortable thing from the surgery but you would be surprised how many people said the hernia repair was what hurt the most! I wouldnt be worried if i had not read all the stuff they said lol but i was up all night reading and it freaked me out Also, What kind of complications did you have with anesthesia? Glad all went well, and hope you are succeeding in your weight loss journey !!!
  23. I am doing all the research I can buy I am finding it hard to find anyone still active who is a few years out and maintaining the weight loss. Had anyone had any long term side effects or complications from the sleeve? Just trying to be informed to make sure I make the right decision ,[emoji4]

    Beginning to Regret

Like Boston states above...people generally comment/post about negative issues and problems. Kind of like giving reviews at a restaurant etc. the regret/fear may be normal, heck, I haven’t had my rny yet (due to in 3.5 weeks) but sometimes I think, “what am I doing?!” But I have read where people have complications but fight through them and end up doing well and they don’t regret their decisions still. Continue doing great! You got this.

    Question about hiatal hernia

I had a sleeve and a hiatal hernia repair and the pain was borderline non existent. I was in the hospital for a few days because of complications from anesthesia so I had the luxury of being on the good stuff for pain, but even after discharge it wasn't bad at all. I have no idea why people would think the hiatal hernia is brutally painful, it takes a surgeon 5 minutes and 1-2 sutures. Honestly gas pains (from having laparscopic surgery) is probably the most painful and uncomfortable part of the entire situation. You'll have discomfort from going to standing to sitting and vice versa but that's about it
