    Am I dreaming?

I feel like I can totally relate in a way. My surgery date was 4/19. I did have pain at the hospital but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, it hurt less when I first started walking. Honesty, I mostly just felt tired haha I actually haven't had to take any of my nausea medication through my recovery, I haven't felt any nausea. In fact, im only in my second week and im already having more energy. I did feel more proud the next couple of days after surgery especially when I tried to get out of bed, my fiance had to help me. That was really painful, I had to take pain meds for about a few days but it was mostly gas pains as well. However, after four days, I have been fine! The walking really does help and I just believe that my recovery has been a lot of smoother than I imagine it to be.
  2. I don’t have children either but I can share a couple of stories. My mother asked by 20 yr old nephew if he thought I was different since I lost weight. He gave my mother a strange look then looked at me & said nope. She’s still the bestest aunt. My 8 yr old niece asked me why I was skinny now. I told her it was so she could give me better hugs. She threw herself at me & wrapped her arms about me then ran off to play. The 10 yr old son of my friend was talking to her about a boy in his class who was very overweight & how sad it was he couldn’t play sport. My friend said yes, it is difficult when you are big to be active. Look how much I can do with you now I’ve lost weight. Her son looked at her quizzical & said what do you mean you lost weight. She said you know from when I was really overweight. He replied you were never fat. Sometimes, our children, nieces & nephews, only see the real us inside not the physical outer us. & they can be more accepting & non judgemental about changes to our external selves. I don’t know the ages of your children but be open. Talk to them about why you’re doing this & how it will be better for all of you. You healthier, more active, etc. & benefits to all of you because of better eating habits as well. Introduce the changes that directly affect them slowly so they are more accepting & not adverse to the changes. Good luck.
  3. Hi everyone! I just found out about this amazing site not too long ago and I been very encouraged reading everything's post, so I decided to create a profile of my own it also feels great to have this community of other people that know what each other may be going through. I recently had the Gastric Sleeve done on 4/19 which was performed by Dr. Zane in Southern California. I waited nearly an entire year to get this surgery, once I did all of the nutrition classes and did all of my appointments to get the surgery, I gained 40 extra pounds and I just give up on myself! But since December of last year, in order to get prepared for my surgery, I got my mind back on track and knew I had to lose a little extra weight so I lost 70lbs in almost 4 months before surgery. My starting weight was 470lbs. Surgery weight was 396lbs. After a little over a week post op, I am now 375lbs which is just crazy! Of course, this week has been challenging but I expected it to be a lot worse than it actually is. I am actually really excited right now because I got a call from my surgeon and I can now start the pureed stage, which I'm super excited about because im just sick of liquids.

    Gastric Sleeve and Reflux

I had reflux terrible before the sleeve and when he was doing my surgery he seen I had a hiatal hernia so he repaired it and I've not had reflux since. That's been 10 months. Sent from my SM-G970U using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. I do not regret having the surgery at all. I'm 10 months post op and o feel better than I've felt in years. I was 100lbs overweight and I've lost 85 of that so far. Doing without cokes didn't affect me any but I do eat red meat. Sent from my SM-G970U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Belly Fat

I had RNY in 2019. I have lost 83 lbs. I walk daily and started ab workouts, yes while walking, to try to firm up my stomach. To me it does not look like I have a lot of loose skin on my stomach and it feels hard not soft. I look 6-7 months pregnant still. I do carry most of my weight in my stomach area. I am almost at my "goal" weight I have set for myself. Any ideas on how to get rid of my "baby"? TYIA

    April surgeries

I had surgery on 4/19 and today I go get my stitches out and I’m returning to work tomorrow! I feel great having had a small hernia repair and my lap- band removed at the same time. I experienced very little pain, only taking Tylenol the first day home. My dr also prescribed gabapentin which helps with nerve pain. I think this made a huge difference. Yesterday I got to have hummus and cottage cheese so the food front is looking up! I stop eating but still haven’t felt that “ full” feeling yet, maybe when solid foods start? Being back at work will be great. At home I want to clean but not allowed to lift anything. Hope everyone is doing well!

    pre-op

Yes. I am ashamed. I ate a cup of nonfat yogurt with 1/8 cup of brown sugar and cocoa. Boy was it good but it wasn’t worth it. I felt much better physically the rest of the day after that, but I got on the scale tonight and I weigh 5 pounds more than I did this morning. So now I have lost a net 7 pounds instead of 12 in 6 days. I’m not going to kick myself over it. For now I guess I’ve got to continue the keto journey even if i do not feel well most of the time. Because I’ve passed out once and almost again yesterday, I am going to call the general doctor tomorrow to schedule an appointment before surgery. Because I don’t think things are right with my body. The bariatric clinic says it is not the diet but I am not convinced of that. It may be that some people just cannot do well on a plan that has only 10 grams of carbs per day and 700 calories. I mean, I am 65 years old.
  9. Sorry. I feel for you. I got the CPAP right before surgery (also an insurance requirement) and got rid of it right after surgery. I was required to bring it and use it in the hospital. I brought it, but didn’t wear it the one night I was there. I hated it! I had just the one that goes under the nose, but it was still terrible. Doctor told me if I lost 10% of my body weight before surgery he expected I wouldn’t need it. I did that pre-surgery.

    Food Before and After Photos

Welcome! I am almost 10 months post-op and I eat both cooked and raw cabbage all the time. I can’t tell you when I started eating cabbage post-op, but I really had minimal veg the first couple months due to lack of space, so probably very small amounts around two months. Please show us your shakshuka when you make it. 😋😊
  11. I posted about this on the sleeve forum before. I developed GERD after my sleeve and was able to control it with one PPI a day until the end of 2020 where it's increased to two PPIs, 1 H2 and tums all day. Had issues with vomiting, nausea, stomach and chest pain. Difficulty swallowing. Sore throat since December. Had an endoscopy 3/3. Lax LES causing GERD, gastritis and a nodule in the antrum of the stomach that appears to be benign but will be removed in an endoscopic ultrasound in June as a precaution as it has a small risk of turning cancerous later on. Gastroenterologist referred me to my bariatric surgeon believing revision is needed. My surgeon wasn't sure on revision because I have lost all my excess weight with no regain. I have only been in maintenance for 4 months though. He sent me for a barium swallow. Had the barium swallow and the radiologist found esophogeal dysmotility and a hernia that the endoscopy had missed. Radiologist said I will either need a nissen fundoplication or revision to bypass along with hernia repair When I called my surgeon's office to schedule a follow up the nurse said something about maybe a hernia repair would be enough which left me feeling confused. I told her I want do whatever has the best chance of not having more complications or needing more surgery in the future. I had my galbladder out June 2020 after sleeve June 2019 and really just want to be healthy with no more surgery. My follow up is on Tuesday. I am not sure what my surgeon is going to recommend. From posts here it seems nissen isn't the best option for sleeve patients. Would hernia repair be enough or is revision to bypass the best option? I just don't want to be getting hernia repair and then still have reflux be a problem due to my esophagus and end up needing a revision later on.

    I smell funny?

I am noticing I smell like onions, but I haven’t eating any. I got some Rose petal spray from iHerb, just $10. They also have it at Ulta. helps a lot!!!
  13. I relate to this as well! I'm early 10 years out from my initial surgery and I still have issues with body image. Occasionally, I still feel the shock of being able to sit in a new type of seat or squeeze into a small space when needing to grab something. When I look at myself I still see the 320-pound girl that I once was. Eventually, I think plastic surgery may help those issues of what I see in the mirror, however, I have started working with a therapist as well. I hope that we all eventually can see and love who we are because it is so important to love who you are regardless of the weight or skin issues. Good luck on your journey!!
  14. Welcome, Chris! Thanks for sharing your story. Not as much attention is given to the topic of men trapped in abusive relationships, but the problem is all too real. I'm glad you were able to rescue yourself from that situation and start over. As a woman who rescued myself and my son from domestic abuse, I know all too well the costs of starting over. But, the benefits far outweigh the struggles. As for addressing weight and health, like you, the death of a parent was a LOUD wakeup call for me. My mother died November 11, 2019; I had my first WLS appointment on December 5, 2019. COVID-19 set back my surgery to October 6, 2020, but I lost 36 pounds "on my own" before I was set up with the amazing tool of the gastric sleeve. I was ready to change and at 6 months out I remain committed to continually changing to move forward, especially through the plateaus and "stalls". Congrats on your great progress! Keep on keepin on!

    Liver shrink Diet

I've been on preop diet for 10 days - through my birthday AND wedding anniversary. Its honestly not too bad. 2 protein shake, a creamy soup and a greek yogurt. Sticking to about 800 calories and down 8 pounds. Surgery is in 5 days. Excited and nervous.

    10 pounds 20 days-super inspiration!

10 lbs down in 20 days this far out isn't very realistic without going insanely (and possibly dangerously) low on calories. I would ordinarily NEVER recommend that someone do that, but given this situation.... Maybe run it by your dietitian first just to see what he/she thinks (and explain the reason)

    Nicotine Test

I will paste this from WebMD. “Generally, nicotine will leave your blood within 1 to 3 days after you stop using tobacco, and cotinine will be gone after 1 to 10 days. Neither nicotine nor cotinine will be detectable in your urine after 3 to 4 days of stopping tobacco products.Nov 9, 2020” I have only seen the cotinine test used to rule out smoking before organ transplant. I work with pre-transplant patients and have never worked with WLS patients. I had quit smoking over 20 years ago and was not tested for either, but tomato—tomahto...I’m sure that some surgeons do test. I quit cold turkey > 20 years ago. In my mind I didn’t think of it as quitting. Total rationalization I know, but I told myself I wasn’t allowed to go into the gas station to buy cigs and that plus some nicotine gum after the 3 days (I was getting grumpy) did the trick. No smoking will help with improved healing and reduced risk of cancer. Quitting smoking while following WLS diet and restrictions will be hard. Some therapy and support groups might help. Be well and good luck to you.
  18. Ok so here is my situation: My daughter was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at age 5 and is now 29 years old. She got married two years ago and has two adorable baby girls. She is in full renal failure and needs a kidney. I am a match. I have been through all medical and psych testing and I am a match. The U of M has given me until May 20th to lose 10 more pounds to become an "ideal match" to do surgery in June. As an ideal match we can blast through so much garbage and red tape and just do the transplant it would be a miracle. No exchange program or waiting, just straight up pick the date, go in and do the transplant. We did not know about the need for a transplant when I decided to have the weight loss surgery in November. Had I not done the surgery then, there is no way I would have ever been able to get to the ideal weight of 140 to 150 pounds to donate for her, I was 235 pounds then! My labs came back with a clean bill of health, no high cholesterol , my a1c was 5.1, everything was good except my b12 was low but that is not a factor for this at all, just a vitamin tweek I do have a question to all you veterans out there: any idea how I can push the weight loss!!!!! I am still losing but 10 pounds in 20 days could be a tough one. I am running about 3 miles every other day , drinking about a gallon of water every day, 90 grams of protein and keeping it under 900 calories and under 30 grams of carbs. I am trying to do some yoga every day, I wanted to start weights but I don't want to do that now because I am afraid that muscle weighing more than fat could be a problem now......yikes. In normal circumstance I wouldn't focus much on the scale and I would try to focus on the measurements but the transplant team focuses on the scale only at this point.

    Long, long time ago...

12 years out. I had several blood transfusions after my WLS so I had big regrets. The issue was that I replaced food with alcohol (was not a drinker prior to WLS) 3 years ago I got my sh*t together and got serious about supplements and started Keto. I am now at a healthy weight 145 and plan to eventually get back down to my lowest weight (135) which was pre covid. I gained 10 pounds when the lockdown started. I don't regret the surgery as much now as most if not all the issues I had were avoidable and just really my fault for not following the post op way of life.

    Hangry

Yeah, that happened with me right after surgery and still sometimes does a year later, though to a lesser extent now. Normally, your body stores excess sugar in your liver for quick access when your blood sugar starts to drop. When you're eating a lot less than your body needs, you tend to have very little sugar stored in your liver, so it's harder for your body to compensate when your blood sugar starts dropping. (By the way, this sugar is stored along with a lot of water. This is the reason why you can lose 5-10 lbs in a week when you first start a diet - you could never lose that much fat in a week. It's also why if you binge on carbs, you may gain 3-4 lbs the next day - even though you probably didn't eat 15,000 calories of pizza. It's mostly water weight in your liver.) I do what qianmij suggested - keep a lot of little (healthy) snacks around. It's funny, because I was absolutely not the snacky type before - I liked to wait for a full, hot meal.
  21. First victory! Had to shout it from the rooftops I’ve lost 50 pounds in 2.5 months!! My surgery was February 24. May Surgeries - check in!

Good Luck all with your pre-op diet and surgeries! You all will do great! For me, the 1st couple of days home after surgery were a bit rough, but by the third day, the brain fog was gone and once I figured out how much I was able to sip at once, it was much better. My surgeon said that the more I drank, the easier it would get...he was right! I also got some Proti Diet 15g Protein Soup - Chicken. My clinic sells them for $10/box of seven. Had them in the hospital and they actually soothed my new tummy. And are really good. They have been a life saver for me with getting my protein in each day. You can get them various places online, including Bariatric Pal Shop.

5 weeks post-op slow weight loss

@fitgal2021 our stats are pretty similar (height and weight) and I had my sleeve done 1 day before you. I was 217 on the day of surgery this past Monday I was 198, so I've only lost 19 lbs since surgery, but I feel good about it because that is a lot of weight in a month. I expect my progress to slow even more since I was on the "smaller" side to begin with. I've had the same concerns as you though - how the heck will I ever make it to 140 lbs!?! But as long as I keep losing, I will trust the process, I'm just so used to getting so much weight off and then it won't budge so I give up... but now with surgery as a tool I'm hoping to keep my eating in check no matter what.

5 weeks post-op slow weight loss

you should be able to get there if you work really hard at it. There are a number of us on here who've made it to a normal BMI. The statistics for making it that far are 10-15%, so it's not easy, but it's definitely possible.
