    Vegetarian

I’ve moved to a Paleo/Whole 30 diet which typically limits dairy, grains, legumes, and all processed food sources. I’m finding substitutes with more natural sources where I can, but I’ve also just accepted that the first few months, it’s more important to hit my protein and hydration goals however possible and gradually work back to the way I plan to eat the rest of my life once my stomach has healed, and I can tolerate a variety of foods again. I figure this process is going to be hard enough without adding more complications at the beginning when I’m barely able to eat anything. So, I’ll be doing Protein infused water and sf jello with added whey protein and Premier Protein shakes. I have found Paleo and Vegan protein powder which I will use in my jellos and shakes. Vegetarian broth won’t have the proteins bone broth offers so you’d have to add unflavored protein sources. However, I’ve been told you can’t add the protein when the broth is hot or it will break down the protein and become gloopy.
  2. B1 – 1/3 C. sloppy joe meat B2 – 1/3 C. sloppy joe meat L – 5 morning star farms vegetarian buffalo wings (surprisingly not bad). 2 cucumber spears. Lite ranch dressing. S – 1oz almonds, 7 small high Fiber crackers D – will be a small hamburger patty w/ cheese and condiments – no bun. Maybe a slice or two of tomato as well. Today was supposed to be day 4 of the pouch diet, but at lunchtime I was sick of meat so I had the veggie wings and cucumber. It was similar density and calorie content to the day 4 recommended foods, but slightly higher in carbs. The almonds and crackers were definitely not on the plan. Even though I strayed a little I can definitely tell that I fill up faster. The early stages of the diet must shrink the pouch a little. Maybe I’ll try a couple of days of liquids every month or so. I have an appointment next week for a follow-up and fill if needed. No fill for me! I still like to get the follow-up visits even if I don’t need a fill because they keep my honest. When I know I’ll have to get on a scale in front of others I’m going to make darn sure it says less than it did the last time I stepped on it!

Share ideas, What did you eat today ?

The vegetarian sausages have a sick amount of protein and fiber! I am trying to eat 3 400 calorie meals per day for a total of 1200 cals. I know that seems like a lot compared to some people on here who eat 600-800 cals but if I go below that I get so hungry I am about to eat my own arm off! So I eat the whole package for either breakfast or lunch. I think it had like 400 calories and 45 grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber, for the whole thing. They taste amazing! It's like thinking you are eating something greasy and bad and in reality you are eating veggies with all of the protein and fiber you need for the day! Plus I find that fiber really helps weight loss because it basically goes right out of you. I have also been eating this weight loss oatmeal and its great because it has a ton more fiber than regular too.

    What ya eating tonight?

How do you make yours? I'm a vegetarian so typically I do refried vegetarian black Beans, lettuce, olives, tomato, salsa, natural sour cream, and tamed jalapenos. If I have extra calories sometimes I'll add cheese or Morningstar griller crumbles (vegetarian beef Protein substitute).

    What ya eating tonight?

Gardein products are excellent. I've been vegetarian for years and never bothered with the "meat" alternatives till I found gardein stuff. So glad you like it! Try the chipotle burgers, they are yummy.

    Food ideas

I was an avid home cook and baker before surgery and am happy to announce I still am after. There's plenty of things we can cook and eat post op still once you're back to eating regular foods. I do protein pasta with a protein of some kind, I did almond flour crust Pizzas, I've done veggie bowls, omelets, burrito bowls, bariatric friendly cake and brownies, broccoli cheddar soup. My fave right now is a bariatric friendly Cobb bowl since I can't eat raw leafy vegetables yet. It has baked peppers and kale, wild rice, avocado, red onion, cherry tomatoes, cheese, boiled egg, olives, vegetarian bacon and a dijon lemon garlic vegan dressing I make. Here's a pic of it. One bowl has about 22 grams of protein, good amount of fiber too. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. I wonder if it is a 3 month thing Miss Erika, I am approaching my 3 month date and I am really not wanting protein in meat form either. I am by nature a vegetarian, hating beef, the way it taste. I want to throw up,Thank goodness for Vegiburgers. Nuts scare me, one nut leads to many nuts, I am afraid nuts are a trigger food for binge. In the mean time, until the protein aversion goes away, I will be having a nutitious greek yogurt. Yum Yum

    April 2006 Bandits

I'm doing great amourette, thanks for asking. I ordered a scale off Ebay and it should be delivered today, so I can't wait to start weighing. I had lost 18 lbs (including the pre-op diet) as of my 10 day post-surgery appointment, but I think it must be more by now. I don't go back to the doc until May 30th, which seems like forever. At least it's finally THIS month! Other mushie ideas -- 1/3 can of vegetarian refried beans with enchalada sauce mixed in is YUM. Also Total Yogurt (all the rage on the east coast of the US right now) tastes like sour cream and has 16 grams of protein, 80 cals and no fat. It's my new favorite food. Also, for those who have a Trader Joe's in town (a grocery store), don't miss out on the Tomato & Roasted Red Pepper soup that comes in a box. It's the most fabulous 100 calories & 5 grams of protein I know of! Finally, last night I boiled a head of cauliflower, mixed in a Total yogurt and 2 servings of fat free cheese. Blenderized it (in my Magic Bullet -- love that thing), put it in a casserole dish and broiled it for 5 minutes. YUM and only 50 cals for 1/5 of the dish, which is more than I could eat.

Honest truth about genepro protein powder

try some of the non meat products in the vegetarian section- I think you will find them easier and save animals at the same time
  14. Wow everyone, such great info and stories etc. I have one thing to share with everyone that I really liked it felt very inspirational to me. I think I'm ok from my throwing up deal, on my first week of solids, feeling hungry of course LOL So where to start cnewstine - you are cracking my up, you must have hella insurance or hella cash, I can't imagine not telling the husband just cause what a huge cash decision it was for my family. really nice story about him showing up / supporting you. I love it. thanks for sharing. lisamac 32---- here are some much loved recipe resources theworldaccordingtoeggface great recipes and resources from an experienced WLS person Also I totally love the instinct diet by susan roberts- this is a new book this year that is loaded with 1200 cal meal plans, great recipes, and it covers meals if you want something fast, want soemthing homecooked, vegetarian or meat. Plus it has great emergency food, etc. and just all great food information cover to cover. It is not specific to bariatric, and maybe some altering will be necessary once restriction makes some food more difficult to eat. but I don't think it will take much altering. I also use sparkpeople.com to enter a recipe, and get back a full breakdown of nutriens/ calories by serving size. Then I enter this into my fitday.com food journal. Vhayes- wowie, 8 mil- and you are in ohio- please tell me your doctor and if the fill was flouro- I am in ohio by my surgeon is in Mexico so I'm looking for a good fill place- most places only put like 5 in at first at most. wow I'd love to imagine 8- I hear sometimes it takes a week to feel it- let me know if you feel restriction at all or the same. Miss Joany- I think I feel it or mayb ejust scar tissue, it is a little tender but doesn't stick out. I do hear some - especially post op, have issues with it sticking out and sometimes have to get the port relocated, sometimes the rub on bones etc. Rambunctious, wow, working out alot and 1000-1200 cals, that's intense. I've read somewhere that if you eat something solid with protein- not a shake- but like a hard boiled egg, or some tofu, or chicken, - after work out that it can help. or better yet work out right before a meal. Well all great to read all the stuff, I'm down 26 with post op. Lisa

    Constantly Choking On Food

Thanks, Laura. Yes, the feeling is in between my breasts. It starts hurting and I feel a big pressure in my chest. It always precedes a PB/slime. My real concern is that since I am having this problem so often I wonder whether I should get another fill. Feeling like I am only eating about 25% less than one I ate pre-surgery is a bummer...yet the PBing has prevented me from getting another fill up until this point. I am wondering if I should just get another fill and completely give up on the foods that give me problems all together. I have the most problems with poultry, meat, and pork - all Proteins. If I eliminate those items I feel like I would be sustaining myself on fish and Pasta (two things that don't seem to give me problems.) I did not expect to have to become a vegetarian from having the band! UGGG! :tt1: I put a call into the person who coordinates my fills and she said that a lot of people have issues with certain types of foods but "thinks it is unfortunate that I seem to be having problems with so many of them." Considering I have only lost 30 pounds and was a self pay I am pretty upset at this point - that equates to $317 a pound!

Hey Guys! I am happy to report I am 7 days post op and starting to feel a lot better! I am so happy that I am feeling better. Thanks for being so sweet. I had a long week, actually! I am supposed to start soft foods today :smile2: My DB and I are going out tonight to Taco Bell for vegetarian refried beans, yum! lol Anne, that date is coming up QUICK how exciting!!! Yes just focus on my team beating others (woot woot) I won't say who it is though  Veejay, we were banded on the same day, how are you feeling? Karen - do you mind me asking your BMI? 23 pounds is amazing, how long was your preop diet? My doctor only requires a 24 hour one so I didn't lose squat before surgery, but that's ok! Every doctor is different and I'm not even going to WORRY about it until my first fill so I can put all my positive energy toward healing. Penny, what's fitday and extrapunds? I hope everyone has a great weekend! Monday i'll be back to bug everyone about what kind of pureed meat I should be eating *puke*!
  17. Just wanted to say I'm a new member, who had my surgery this past May 15th. I won't lie the surgery landed me in ICU and I have had a horrible time. Which includes, living on Oxygen for 6 weeks, Blood transfusion, that may have done something really bad to me, and I am continuing to see an oncologist and hematologist again this Friday. The kicker for me is when I left the hospital, due to all the drama, they had actually added over 30 pounds to me, I weighed 372 pounds when I entered at 340. That scared the heck out of me, but in 10 days I was back to 340 and have been losing rather steadily since (with a current stall) I joined this group because I need help with Vegetarian recipes. I want to go vegan but I want sauces and "cheese" and am horrible at making those things. I feel like being vegetarian I am eating way too much cheese to get the protein. (should point out I can't keep down any form of powder protein or shake down, so has to come through food). Any suggestions and support is greatly appreciated.
  18. Have a look at Dr Matthew Weiner’s Pound of Cure book & his you tube videos. He’s a bariatric surgeon who supports a low animal protein diet. It may not be anything all that new but may make you more comfortable about how to manage your weight loss post surgery. A good dietician should help you devise a way of eating that is best for you, your health requirements & your eating preferences. The biggest ficus post surgery is your prirein intake (& fluids) but I’ve never heard anyone say they were restricted to getting their protein only from animal sources. Plenty of plant based protein shakes & powders, yoghurts, milk, etc. as you know you can eat to meet the goals you’ll be given. Initially after the surgery you will be on a staged return to eating diet. This is support your healing tummy & not put undue stress on your digestive system. There are some foods we’re not advised to eat during this period. But again a good dietician should be able to advise you of alternatives. Mind you many have refried beans on their list of recommended foods during the staged return to eating stages. While I was on keto for my pre surgery diet, I was not encouraged to follow it long term by my dietician: good for kickstarting a diet but not long term she advised. I had my own doubts about it so I was glad. Many of us use the weight loss stage to devise a way of eating that best suits our needs & preferences & don’t follow any specific ‘diet’. I mean if there was a diet that worked for everyone none of us would have been obese & needed surgery. Personally I’m a low fat, low carb (2 serves of whole/multigrain carbs a day), low sugar & high protein (absorption issue). Many vegetarians successfully have surgery so your eating preferences should not be a deterrent to you either once you find a supportive surgeon & dietician.
  19. I can say for myself this was part of a journey. I know that sounds trite, but it really was. I've been a long time vegetarian, but I can honestly say at least 10 of those years I really should have considered myself a junk-a-tarian. I didn't eat meat or seafood, but I wasn't eating healthy. Part of what made me decide to have this surgery was seeing the changes that cleaning up my diet did for me. Cutting back on fast foods, processed foods and sodas made major changes in how I felt and my health. However the damage was done. I was morbidly obese with chronic ongoing health issues. This surgery was just as much a tool as deciding to cook from scratch and go to the gym regularly was.

Approved - but Should I Go through with it?

@@wwboy As far as people being miserable post surgery, most of them were miserable before surgery. They thought the weight was their problem, not other things. Bad life choices, traumatic childhood, bad life partners, lack of assertiveness, social anxiety, etc. Losing weight won't fix that and when people lose the weight and they are emotionally in the same place or worse, it really goes down hill. I know a lot of people that had surgery and are still miserable but they are just miserable people, fat or skinny. If you love yourself and you are happy with yourself, but you need to lose some excess weight to make life easier then do it. Most vegetarians and vegans I know are fat. They are sugar addicts and they pile on a lot of crap. It is really easy to be over weight on a plant based diet. You can just binge on fruit and you will be just as fat as if you are were eat double cheese burgers. If moderation is your issue, then surgery will help you with the moderation. The ability to eat very little and feel satisfied and full is a feel of euphoria that is hard to describe. You can have the sleeve and still have a plant based diet, people here do it, it is done. Your counselor doesn't have to live in your skin, and deal with you life. So keep that in mind when taking advice from her or anyone else (including me) you have to live with you.

    What ya eating tonight?

Black bean and butternut squash enchilada casserole. I can't do tortillas at all so I left them out. I am vegetarian so I've never tried chicken, but I eat vegetarian chick'n patties all the time and they go down fine.
  22. There are so many pre-op regimens out there. My surgeon only required that I eat very low fat and vegetarian for two weeks prior. My BMI was at 40. Oh, and nothing to eat or drink after midnight before surgery, of course! But if I were you I would do whatever I could to optimize the surgery. You'll never regret doing the pre-op diet.
  23. So i asked around on this topic. I eat meat but I don't enjoy it. One of the great suggestions I got was to make your soup, and then when it's cold, mix in some unflavored Protein powder. Then when you re-heat, do so very slowly so it doesn't clump. I'm looking forward to trying that. In a thread I started about Vegetarian sleevers, I posted a pic of an example vegetarian day where I think you could get 80+ gms of protein from vegetarian food. Would love to see some of yours suggestions in that thread as well. But it's soft/solid foods, not on liquids where you and I both seem to be. I also reached out to another vet sleever and she sent me some good suggestions, which I will share with you via PM. Grass eaters, unite!

    Going Vegan After Sleeve

I'm working on transitioning to vegetarianism first, but the end goal is full veganism. I don't want to consume anything that comes from an animal. Have you found any good vitamins/ supplements that are at least vegetarian? Anything you can recommend would be greatly appreciated!

    Calling all October sleevers!!

This Liquid Diet is just knocking off the pounds. I haven't even been on it a full week and I lost 12 more pounds, I went in today for the blood work and I was in shock. Makes me optimistic about the weight loss post surgery lol. It's been hard though. Food has been on my mind ALL day. I just want MEAT. I don't know how vegetarians do it.
