    Thirtysomething's

Hi 30 somethings. I'm Julie, from Alabama but living in Yankee-land (NYC), as my family calls it. I'm a lawyer, single (except for a recurring relationship that springs anew every few months), 33 years old, no children (yet). I was banded in April by Dr. Fielding at NYU. I'm down 33 lbs to date and glad to finally have what I hope will be a good fill. I get to the gym pretty often and meet with a trainer a couple of times a week to make sure I go. My pre-band downfalls were ordering food instead of preparing healthy things. Mexican food is the enimy! Lastly, I'm vegetarian, if anyone is interested in sharing veggie ideas, particularly getting in enough Protein.
  3. i've been having breakfast: high Protein oatmeal with a piece of fruit or egg on toast (i can do some breads!) lunch: 1/2 tuna sandwich or lunch meat or Soup or healthy choice tv dinner or vegetarian lowfat refried Beans, dinner: small piece of meat or fish, 1 cup cooked veges or salad and usally a 1/2 cup of starch like a potatoe or rice (again, I can eat those things). I've also been grilling a lot of veges on the grill and maybe a portabello mushroom (delicious) Snacks are low fat yogurt or cheese stick or few slices of roast beef or peanuts

    Non-creative bandster needs menu ideas!

Here's a day I'm happy with: Breakfast: One serving of Special K Protein Plus cereal w/ lactaid nonfat milk. First Mid Meal: Protein enriched sugar free pudding. Lunch: Whole wheat wrap with baby spinach, mustard, lean turkey and low fat swiss. Second Mid Meal: South Beach snack bar (peanut butter crisp flavored). Dinner: Vegetarian refried beans with a little salsa and low fat cheese. Third Mid Meal: Liquid Whey protein supplement (I am told to eat six small meals a day and no extra snacks.) Cereal is good, but I'll warn you that I went through a time where I couldn't really eat it. It would go down ok, but slowly, and you know what happens to cereal in milk... Today I had frosted mini wheats... I dipped them in milk!! meat wraps, with like deli meats, and cheeses, or some cream cheese are good. Beef jerky could be a good mini meal/snack. Unfortunately, except for protien bars, there just isn't a lot of grab and go foods for people trying to eat healthy that you don't have to pre-prepare (which I hate).

    Non-creative bandster needs menu ideas!

Let's see...today I had B-scrambled egg with mushrooms (1/4 of "replacement eggs" with mushroom pieces scattered in) L-Boca burger with a pickle and a "dab" of Helman's Light mayo with steamed mixed veggies left over from last night D-3oz of Tilapia, cooked carrots, cooked broccoli crowns Yesterday I had B-scrambled egg with l/f sharp cheddar shredded with a bit of canned spinach (again, 1/4 cup replacement eggs) S-Sugar Free Jello L-Pink Salmon in the foil package..it's a perfect 3oz with canned asparagus D-Vegetarian Re-Fried beans mixed with 3oz canned chicken breast and a couple of tablespoons of salsa with a bit of taco seasoning mixed in I'm only three weeks out and still sort of learning how things effect me. I eat a lot of fish. Salmon (grilled and canned), tuna, tilapia, crab, etc. I also enjoy Morningstar and Boca products. Chicken cooked any way I can imagine (well, never fried). I eat cooked squash, broccoli, asparagus, green beans, peas, carrots, beets (very limited), spinach, etc. Hope that helps just a tiny bit...

    35 Or Lower Bmi?

Hi, I fluctuate between a 36 and 37 bmi and this is the biggest I have ever been so I have elected to self-pay for my surgery since insurance will not pay for it unless I have a bmi of 40 or co-morbidties....I am going to Mexico on the 26th to get banded by Dr. Joya. It's a personal decision, so many of my friends are like, just eat less and exercise! I have tried and tried and consistently lose and gain back more..I DO STILL exercise A LOT but it seems to just maintain my weight, don't really lose because it is SO hard to control my appetite and to eat the "right" things. I am a vegetarian and do eat a lot of veggies and healthy stuff, however, I also eat a LOT of carbs and cheese which are my downfall....

Hi New Here Any Vegetarians Here?

Hi everyone! I'm not vegetarian but LOVE Tofu. Now that I can eat solids - I'm wanting some. Does anyone have any good easy recipes? I make one that's really good. Cube the tofu. Fry in olive oil, then make up Frank's Red Hot sauce & butter to make a sauce, shake the tofu in it. Makes it like buffalo wings. Yummy! Would love to hear what you all do with tofu! Thanks!

Hi New Here Any Vegetarians Here?

Hi all! I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian. Vegetarian foods are great with the band. I've had no problems at all yet (knock on wood). I do a lot of stirfry. Firm tofu, snap peas, Water chestnuts & carrots cooked with Pam for about 5 minutes is quick and simple. I eat 3-4 Morningstar chicken patties a week as well. Taco salad with Morningstar crumbles and black Beans is another favorite. I've been cooking a lot more since banding, which is great for the pocketbook and the waistline! Let's keep this thread going. It's hard to find a good vegetarian bandster support system. Take care,

  11. Hi everyone! I'm really struggling with finding well-balanced nutrition ideas to fill my daily menus. I'm thinking my best strategy (at least until I get the hang of things) is to find a few days worth of menus and then rotate them! Would anyone like to share their daily menu for a day that they are really proud of? I would really appreciate hearing from you so that I can gain some ideas. Thank you very much for your help! Here's a day I'm happy with: Breakfast: One serving of Special K Protein Plus cereal w/ lactaid nonfat milk. First Mid Meal: Protein enriched sugar free pudding. Lunch: Whole wheat wrap with baby spinach, mustard, lean turkey and low fat swiss. Second Mid Meal: South Beach snack bar (peanut butter crisp flavored). Dinner: Vegetarian refried beans with a little salsa and low fat cheese. Third Mid Meal: Liquid Whey protein supplement (I am told to eat six small meals a day and no extra snacks.)
  12. Hi all, I am unfilled and 3 months out of surgery. I just ate 6 ounces of breaded seiten (fake chicken for vegetarians) I was starving and 3 ounces did not fill me up, so I had another. Is that normal???? I'm a bit worried about being able to take in so much food to fill me up.
  13. Actually I agree with that. I dont think any degree of regular PBing is OK and I really really dont think it's OK to not be able to eat any form of meat or breads for long periods of time either - Ok if you cant eat steak for example, but you have to be able to get some form of red meat in unless you're a vegetarian and know what you're doing with substituting the nutrients. Not only does that tend to make me think "too tight" it also means its very difficult to get in a balanced diet. But - if you had to have your band loose enough to allow for this, then for a lot of people, the band simply wouldnt work. So its a personal thing.

Hi New Here Any Vegetarians Here?

Hi, Alysha~ Yes, there are a number of us vegetarians here. I'm trying to remember who else is, but if you search using "vegetarian", you should find some of our posts. We've traded some recipes back and forth, but I ha ven't seen anything recently. You've found a great support group...spend time reading through current and older posts, and you'll glean tons of great information and tips. Best of luck on your surgery and recovery! Emily

Hi New Here Any Vegetarians Here?

Hello and welcome! Although I'm not a vegetarian, my best friend is, and I spend lots and lots of time at her place cooking veggie Indian food (she's from Bombay). Indian food has some unbelievably delicious choices for vegetarians. I love Paleek Paneer (spinach with cottage cheese) and all of the yummy nutritious veggies with exotic herbs and spices. One of my favorite dishes that she makes isn't strictly "Indian", but a variation on the British Beans on toast. Let me tell you, I thought beans on toast would be extremely horrible, but I am here to say that the way my friend makes it, ALL of our friends, including me, beg for it on a regular basis! It is literally one of the most delicious foods I've ever eaten. It's also super high in protien and Fiber and super low in fat and calories! And it's extremely fast and easy to make. Here's the recipe: Two cans Vegetarian Baked Beans (Heinz) 1.5 or two fresh green Chili peppers, chopped 1/2 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped Two fresh garlic cloves, minced One onion, chopped One turn of the pan of olive oil Sliced whole grain bread Directions: Pour about one turn of the pan with olive oil and heat. Sautee garlic, onion, and chili peppers together until all are somewhat soft. Pour baked beans into pan and cook on low to medium heat for about ten minutes to let the flavors sink in. Add in cilantro and lower heat. Simmer for five minutes. Serve over toasted whole grain bread. Let me know if you try it and how you like it if you do!

Hi New Here Any Vegetarians Here?

Hi Ashley, Congrates on the surgery date, I'll think of you on the 26th. I've played with being a Lacto-Ovo (more Ovo) Vegetarian for yrs, but never made the commitment to see it through. Post-band life is like pre-band life in that we are encouraged to eat a well balanced diet. I am having a harder time than ever getting enough protien, I'm using soy milk, eggs, and legumes mostly. Do you cook with tofu? I would think it would have a great consistincy for the soft stage and could easily be made mushy. I was also banded in Mx, what city does Dr. Joya practice in? I was banded in Monterrey and am enjoying returning for fills.
  17. Hi, My name is Alysha from Ventura County, CA. I'm a Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian (more lacto - then ovo :hungry: .) My surgery is scheduled for the 26th of June with Dr. Joya in Mexico. Was wondering what the journey was with food, weight loss, etc. for any veggies on here.
  18. My favorite broth has been vegetarian vegetable. It has a nice light tomato flavor that reminds you of veggie soup. It became my comfort food of sorts that first week. Warm and yummy. Now my favorite food is pink salmon in the foil packages made by chicken of the Sea. A perfect 3 oz of Protein. Packed with love

    hOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

Tidge- I would recommend sticking to vegetarian refried Beans and scrambled eggs (if you're an octo-vegetarian like my fiance) because they have much more Protein in them and will keep you fuller longer and give you more energy. Mashed potatoes are carbs. While good carbs are great for your body...a lot of people get frustrated gaining weight on mushies before their first fill and it's generally because of less healthy food choices. And yes, those pains you're having should go away soon...try to walk A LOT. That's really the only thing that helped me. I was walking 2-3 miles a day after the first week post-op and the pains went away at the end of that 2nd week. Just a thought! Best of luck with your recovery everyone!

  23. It's just me and my fiance. I eat lots of meat, he's a vegetarian! So I have LOTS of leftovers. We went to macaroni grill and I had the whole wheat penne and chicken. I had to use TWO to-go containers to bring my food home. I've just decided that it IS OK to throw away food. I don't have to eat it. Sigh. It's hard though. But maybe it's helping me get the head issues resolved as well. Maybe I should get a bigger dog. My pekignese can't eat much either! Kristin

    April 2006 Bandits

I'm doing great amourette, thanks for asking. I ordered a scale off Ebay and it should be delivered today, so I can't wait to start weighing. I had lost 18 lbs (including the pre-op diet) as of my 10 day post-surgery appointment, but I think it must be more by now. I don't go back to the doc until May 30th, which seems like forever. At least it's finally THIS month! Other mushie ideas -- 1/3 can of vegetarian refried beans with enchalada sauce mixed in is YUM. Also Total Yogurt (all the rage on the east coast of the US right now) tastes like sour cream and has 16 grams of protein, 80 cals and no fat. It's my new favorite food. Also, for those who have a Trader Joe's in town (a grocery store), don't miss out on the Tomato & Roasted Red Pepper soup that comes in a box. It's the most fabulous 100 calories & 5 grams of protein I know of! Finally, last night I boiled a head of cauliflower, mixed in a Total yogurt and 2 servings of fat free cheese. Blenderized it (in my Magic Bullet -- love that thing), put it in a casserole dish and broiled it for 5 minutes. YUM and only 50 cals for 1/5 of the dish, which is more than I could eat.
  25. :think :help: Hi, I was banded on Thursday. I am okay with the port pain, and gas, however, have absolutely no enery. And I mean no energy, it is taking everything I have just to type this. I can't seem to sleep enough and can barely make it up and down my stairs. I am not having hunger pains. I am on clear fluids until next Thursday. I am a vegetarian and so far have had vegetable broth, sugar free jello, gatorade, flavored waters. Any ideas? I am really even getting depressed wondering what kind of mistake I have made. Please help. I have two small children and a business to run and can't continue to feel this lethargic. Please help with suggestions if you can. thanks, tina
