    May Surgery?!

I am having my surgery tomorrow, too! Only my husband knows that I am having surgery. I told my adult children that I am having a hernia repaired—they would not understand why I elected to have weightloss surgery. My 28 year old daughter is a fitness and health nut, and she thinks all I need to do is eat better and exercise (like I haven’t been doing that for the past 10 years). I will tell them the truth post-surgery—I just need to do this for me without their judgement! I am both excited and nervous! I am more nervous about what life will be like post-surgery more than I am for the surgery! In any case—we’ve got this! Good Luck tomorrow—I will send you positive thoughts from my pre-op room in TN! 🥰

    The longest plateau ever

it gets harder the closer you get to your goal. I've gained 10 lbs since the pandemic started and am now six lbs overweight. It is a BEAR to get the scale to move. I basically can't eat anything that puts me over my daily 1700 calorie limit, or I stay put or start going up. My brother was here for a week which involved some restaurant eating and more treats than usual (even though I had no "blow outs"). Of course, my weight shot up. It's a lifelong struggle...

    May Surgeries - check in!

I found out yesterday that I’m scheduled for May 19! I felt a wave of excitement and terror haha. My pre op appt is this Tuesday the 4th. I’m still not sure when I’m going to be able to get my lab work done, my kids had to go back to distance learning after they each had a teacher test positive for covid. Their dad is also out of town for work until June 25. When it rains it pours!

    Feeling discouraged!

all of the above posters are correct. With hospital weight gain, it's from the IV fluids. Some people come back from the hospital 10 lbs heavier than when they went in. It can take a week or so for it to work its way out of your system.
  5. My surgery is May 10. Started the diet yesterday. Staying pretty hungry!

    Intermediate Fasting

IF isn't necessarily about just eating two meals a day, its about eating your daily calorie intake (and some may eat lower than maintenance calories) in a shortened time frame and fasting for a period of time whether its 10, 12, 14 or more hours. This thread may be useful to look through
  7. It’s most likely a reaction to the adhesive they use for the steri strips. I had this as well and tried everything possible to help including antihistamines and topical benedryl. The best thing I found was using a kaolin clay mask for 10 mins and rinse off. It helps draw out the oils that caused the allergy and soothe the skin. Calamine lotion would help as well. Make sure all the strips are moved as well since they are just trapping the allergens.
  8. I did regret getting the surgery for about four weeks after because recovery was ruff I also had a hiatal hernia repair and my hip got messed up some how during the surgery and could barely walk on it for a week and a half. Mind u the hip was in bad shape before surgery so it didn’t take much. How ever I am 11 months out and 88 pounds down n I do have trouble digesting steak it doesn’t sit well and I really don’t miss anything and now my only regret is that I didn’t do it 10 yrs ago. Hershey Reese’s peanut butter cup are in sugar free ! Just so you know the sell them at target. I love just know if I really need a peanut butter cup I can have one. Good luck 🍀

    Start of Week 4

Long deep breath......... The last 3 weeks have been weeks of emotion. Week one discomfort wondering if its all worth it. Week 2 excitement because the pounds are coming off and the adding of full liquids. Week 3 excitement for purees and exercise, then moments of sadness and frustration when the scale didn't move wondering if I am doing something wrong. THANK GOD for this forum where just typing week 3 you she that the stalls are normal!! For those of you new to this take a few hours to just type in all your concerns questions or thoughts you will find something. I got the go ahead to start eating "real food" and go back to the gym so super excited. I am down 17 pounds and 10 inches since day before surgery. The rate of weight loss was 12# week 1 , 4# week 2, 1# week 3....now you see the frustration LOL. The surgery is definitely worth it! Tips that have helps with the mental aspect: On a piece of paper write your why, then 5-6 NON weight goal i.e shopping off the rack, walking up a flight of stars post it on your mirror and check off each one as you meet them. Remember the "old" you died on the surgery table. So what you did before is not going to be the same you are learning every day like an infant. This is a journey not a race Now I need help from the community: I am supposed to add veggies to my meals but still reach my 65 gm of protein but only eat 3 times a day with one snack...how the heck do I do that? I can only tolerate about a 1/4-1/3 cup of food. I asked the dietitian but honestly her answer was...just add then and take the food away..What the heck! ANY advice hot tips are wanted and welcomed! Thanks in advanced!
  10. I'm 11 months out of sleeve surgery. I came to build a routine in what I eat, and I absolutely enjoy every meal. Even if it's exactly the same as yesterday. I love it. Here's what I eat in a day (and the day after, and the one after.... 🙂 Breakfast: 2 eggs, 4 oz of diced lean ham (pork or turkey, or a turkey patty), 1 oz leek, 1 oz sweet peppers, all scrambled together. Add 6-8 cherry tomatoes and an espresso with 1 oz of 2% milk. Lunch: 5 oz of lean meat (chicken breast, pork loin, beef sirloin) grilled or pan seared, 2 cups of shredded fresh cabbage, one tablespoon of light mayonnaise Dinner: 5 oz of fish (cod, mahi, salmon, tuna, shrimp) and 1 cup of sliced zucchini or snap peas, all pan seared together, plus one Danon Light&Fit yogurt. That's about 1100 calories a day. Throw in the occasional apple or cup of berries, and it's 1200 calories, all in. And that's ALL I've been eating for the last 10 months. The only variation is the type of meat or fish I have. Or what flavor yogurt I choose. I'm not bored, and I look forward to every meal. It makes it easy to shop for and cook. Do yourself a huge favour and throw away ALL the crisps, cakes and any other greasy or sugary snacks you may have in the house. Then don't buy them again. If you really must snack, bite into an apple, or chew on a carrot. It keeps the mouth busy, without adding much caloric content. Oh, and I drink a gallon of water a day, to stave off constipation. Hang in there, believe in yourself, and maybe talk to a therapist or a friend about it.
  11. It makes sense that people who lose weight before surgery lose less weight after surgery -- simply because they have less to lose if they've already lost some! But I certainly wouldn't take that as a recommendation not to lose weight before surgery. I lost about 70 pounds in the 5 months before my surgery. My highest recorded weight was ~340 pounds and I was ~270 the day of surgery. I'm ~150 now (so I've lost ~120 pounds after surgery). So let's say I hadn't lost any weight before surgery and went into surgery at 340 pounds. Maybe I would have lost 150 pounds by now instead of only 120. That would put me at 190 pounds. So I am glad I got a head start on my weight loss before surgery. Keep in mind that the heavier you are, the easier it is to lose each pound. At 340 pounds, it was not difficult for me to lose 10 pounds. At 150 pounds, losing 10 pounds is a major challenge. If you wait until after surgery to start losing weight, your results will be more dramatic because that "easy" weight will be melting off in the beginning. I suppose that could be a benefit because the early post-op stages can be rough and the quick weight loss can keep you motivated. But you will still eventually reach a point where the weight loss slows down. It will just be later than it would be if you lost some of the weight before surgery. In addition to getting a head start on weight loss, I think it was good for me to lose weight before surgery because I started getting into some healthier habits before surgery. I think it's extremely important to log everything you eat (I use MyFitnessPal, but there are other apps that do the same thing), and I've been doing that since 5 months before my surgery. By the time I had surgery, it was already a habit. I had also started to make healthier food choices before surgery, which made it easier to eat healthy foods when I transitioned to solid foods after surgery (also easier to avoid high-fat, high-sugar foods that could cause dumping syndrome after surgery, since I had already reduced my intake of that stuff before surgery). By the way, the lower your weight before surgery, the lower your maintenance weight is likely to be (and the sooner you'll get there), so I'd consider that to be a pretty good argument for losing weight before surgery.

    Postoperative surgery questions!

Congrats on the surgery and happy recovery! Don't worry about the water, yet. 32 oz for day 1 should be OK. You're still full of the IV saline they pumped into you during the surgery and hospital stay. Now, it is important to keep a bottle near you at all times, and take small sips every 10-15 minutes or so (1-2 oz at a time). Do that ALL DAY, all waking hours. You'll see that the ounces slowly add up.
  13. I met with my surgeon this week to schedule my surgery (yay!) I have a BMI of 44 and am 263, and would like to lose 100 lbs. I asked him about how to be successful at this and he said some interesting things that surprised me. Namely: 1) Generally, BMI will go down about 10-12 points but not much more. (That would still leave me overweight! I want to get to a healthy BMI!) 2) People who lose weight before surgery (whether liquid diets, low cal, low carb) don't always lose as much after surgery. I was surprised because I thought that the more weight I lost beforehand would be better. I've seen lots of people on here who lost weight on their pre-surgery diet and did fantastic post-op with their weight loss. What has been your experience? Would love to hear the positive benefits of losing weight pre-surgery.

    Did you hair come back?

Surgery August 2019 - I just stopped losing my hair and seeing lots of new growth (downside, weightloss also slowing down) - I think I'd rather be skinny and bald!
  15. I’m 2 weeks post roux rn y a d I’m happy! I ran 2 miles including a giant hill yesterday and walked 3 more miles after that. Went back to work 10 days after surgery and I’m doing very well. I did progress my food incorrectly last night and had a bad morning from beef stew!!! So I need to stick with protein shakes got a few days, but I’m not dying or hungry and I’ve lost a lot of weight so far, even people who don’t know about my surgery are commenting on how good I look- my asthma has disappeared and reflux/ heartburn and jusT moving is easier! I think this has added 10 years to my lifespan, maybe more. I’m very happy!

    Kaiser SB

So today was my first day back at work as a sub teacher. I work tomorrow and Monday as well. I felt GREAT. As soon as I got off that blood pressure pill my dizzy issues went away completely. I can WALK from one end of campus to the other multiple times a day and my feet are only a bit sore (before I could barely limp to my car). I must have walked across campus (which isn’t small) at least twelve times. I can keep up with the kids. I don’t have to leave class five minutes early to make it to pick up the kids on time, it takes my 1/10 the time to walk now than it did before. No one has seen me since before I had surgery and I was already losing weight before... so now .... everyone was a tad shocked by how well I walk and how much I’ve changed. In looking at my step count I am curbing way more calories walking than I am taking in. Now that I am actually walking more I will be able to take off the weight that much more super happy!

    Sips Procedure

It's been 15 months since I had mine done, but if my memory is correct it was around 2 weeks or so for the gas pain to pass (more like 10 days or so). Fluid was very difficult for me to get in and I struggled so much with the two protein drinks I had to drink in the beginning of my journey. Sorry that you're struggling! I hope it passes for you soon! Also, with the pantoprazole do you feel that it's helping with acid or making it worse? I can't take proton-pump inhibitors because they create MORE acid for me for some reason so I take famotidine (a.k.a pepcid) instead and it works great for me (I have EoE which I was diagnosed with BEFORE my surgery so yes I still take famotidine).

    Hair Loss!

it's a part of it.... I lost hair with the first sx in 2009, band. But because i lost slowly it was not as bad. 8/28/19 I had the sleeve sx done. My WL was very rapid and the hair fell more. It's coming back. I have a lot of new hair growth and falling had gone down a lot
  19. So I am starting liquid stage 2 today after being a week postop after BPD/DS and I'm worried about the amount of consuming I can do before feeling full. I worry I don't get full quick enough. It's still liquid, so there's THAT right? I intended to have my cottage cheese, small curd, and chew it well enough to be more thin and less curd-y, have a quarter or half cup of it and probably feel like I hit a wall. It didn't quite happen like that. I nipped through it slowly and I'd get what I thought was full for a second but it passed like a gas bubble. Happened a couple times and I'd hold off for a couple minutes. But if I got a pang, I'd allow myself another bite or a couple. Well, I ended up eating probably a cups worth in 10-15 minutes. Maybe I'm being too hard on myself. Maybe my expectations aren't where they should be. I had a LOT of stomach to remove (I was 486 when I started my preop diet). Maybe I'll err a little higher on what's expected? I'm a worrier though and I'm worried sick within weeks I'll be back to never full, always hungry, and would like to hear what other people have experienced or have to say. I know it comes down to control. But the assistance of feeling full was something I'd hoped would be a little more... dramatic. Thanks guys... Sent from my SM-G988U using BariatricPal mobile app
  20. It just happened organically. No therapy, no self help books, it just happened naturally , and I think it happens to most of us over time...it just takes time. I'm a year ahead of you in the process (my surgery was 12/18/19), and it probably took about a year...maybe 13 months...to get to place I am now mentally. I also think that being thin helps me maintain that place in social situations. When I was heavy, not only did I want to eat the food, but then I also felt like people were judging me if I ate too much, too little, made healthy choices, made unhealthy choices, etc. Now that I'm tiny, I feel like nobody cares what I eat, and I can just do my own thing. I think that will happen to you too! At some point we just get out of our own head!!

    Educational / motivational educators?

I found Dr. Vuong very abrasive and unpleasant. I like Erin Branscom's videos on you tube (My Level 10 Life). I don't agree with everything she says, but I like her style for the most part. She also has a private Facebook group I've found very supportive. She focuses a little more on VSG than RNY, but most of it applies to both. I agree with Matthew Weiner.

    Favorite Grocery Products

OMG! I went to Walgreens where I'm on vacation and I picked up 3 boxes of strawberry and one of cherry and they are amazing!!! Yeah I live near Boston and there's a Family Dollar a few towns over but it's hard to park there. I can go to Dollar General when I visit my friend in NC next month. There's a Walmart about a half hour away from where I live but I don't usually make the trek out there. The Walgreens is about 10 minutes away. I don't usually go there since there are 2 CVSs in walking distance, but it's worth it since these are sooo good. I told my friend about them and she was intrigued too!

    May Surgeries - check in!

I'm halfway through my preop diet and nearly 10 pounds down! I'd like to lose a little more. 15lbs sounds great to me Right now I'm just waiting anxiously for the hospital to call me to schedule my COVID test. I keep thinking they've forgotten me! If I haven't heard by tomorrow I might give my surgeon's office a call.

    Liver diet pre-op

I had to do mine for 14 days, and I am on Day 10. I honestly can’t imagine doing this longer. I have lost 15lbs—so it works if you stick to it! Good Luck!

    Pre op diets

I am protein shake, bariatric soups, and sugar-free liquids only. I am on day 10 of the pre-op diet, and I agree, the protein shakes are so sweet. I can only handle 2 a day. I add unflavored protein powder (GenPro) to my soups to get enough protein. Good Luck with your surgery—I am the day before, so I will be thinking of you from my hospital room!
