    If you can keep your nerve and get to the hospital on the day then you will thank yourself three months down the line. If you bottle it then in 12 months you will be back on the bariatric treadmill wishing that you will have enough courage this time around. We were are scared, its the unknown. Like @ ms.sss says I too would have this done again in a heartbeat. It has changed my life. Its worth it. The pre op diet is so tough it feels like you have to earn the surgery. I hated that diet so badly, I almost ran to the operating theatre

    Thank you! I keep seeing so many say that they were scared and even maybe at first regretted it until a few weeks passed. I think those first few weeks are what is scaring me most. Will I freak out over not eating normal food? Will I go into some sort of depression? That is what's heavy on my mind.
  3. Im in the same boat Lindsay, and having very similar thoughts. I think I am starting to get a little more room for solid foods, so I was hoping to drop to 1 shake a day soon. Although I have also been ignoring veggies at meals, just because I was barely able to eat anything (so focused on protein). I will probably add more veggies in, so that my protein says around the same for the next few weeks and shoot for dropping to 1 @ 3 months. ms.sss's timeline looked pretty doable to me.
  4. I'm already annoyed and sick of it lol I'm HUNGRY!!! And I'm already tired of drinking everything. I want actual food. BUT.... I know this is for the greater good. It's only for a week, and the first 3 days are always the worst. Thank goodness this is for my revision, so I already know what to expect with this since I've done it before. Just not having ANY fun with it. At all. Nope. Already ready to be done lol

    Getting plastics tomorrow!

    Week 2 of recovery - Gotta say, recovery for plastics is no joke. Bariatric recovery seemed like a breeze compared to this one. Still hanging in there, pain is a bit tolerable but it'll take at least 8 weeks or so to go back to feeling normal per se. Anyone thinking of plastics, please bear in mind week 1 and even 2 will be a little difficult in terms of recovery! But can't wait to see in a month or 2, how I feel and look in the mirror!
  6. So, I am going back and forth on getting the surgery and not getting the surgery. I don't know what I am going to do. I have my last appointment Monday for my final insurance requirements for approval. I am about 135 lbs. overweight, so I have a good bit I need to lose, which is why have been thinking of and researching the bypass. I started out with a little doubt and then I decided no, not for me. A few months later I was back at thinking of it again, and decided without a doubt I was going for it. That is when I started seeing the surgeon and required doctor's/specialist's visits. I was on that train of thought for a few weeks and now I don't know if I am getting impatient or truly scared or feel as though I might actually be able to do this on my own through diet and exercise. I feel so lost. I feel like I have read all of the information. I have joined numerous groups to see others results and experiences. Is this normal? To go back and forth? Am I just too much in my own head about this?

    How long is a protein supplement needed

    I never did protein drinks. 3 meals with 3oz protein is about 60g protein. This was my plan from day 1, though the first 6 weeks were pureed and I rarely managed the whole thing. Good luck, Tek
  8. The beginning is definitely hard. Make sure you're meeting your protein goals to help with hunger and healing. Do you have someone who can help you with cooking during the early stages? This was a huge help for me, especially during the liquid stage. Enough food was made that my family could have dinner and the leftovers again for lunch. Are there easier options for you to feed your family, pre made meals from the grocery? I promise your family will be fine for a few weeks with an alternative way of eating. During the liquid stage, I would eat away from my family because it was hard to be around food. Puree and soft food 5 a bit easier, and my family would eat a normal version of what I was making for myself. It definitely takes A LOT of planning. I will echo what others have said: please stick to your plan, therapy is important if you're struggling, and it will get easier. Hang in there, you got this!

    Does Eating really get easier?

    It will get better. I did not meet my water intake the first few weeks, and couldn't meet the protein without the shakes. I was told by my surgeon that it was normal for the first month, but then to prioritize.

    Vacation after surgery

    I have traveled every month since surgery, starting at exactly one month post op. I took some protein powder (fruity one) and some shakes in my bag and then just ate the protein of whatever was being served. At my 2nd trip, which was about 7 weeks post op, I followed the same idea, but only took the protein powder since I could eat a little more and I wasn't afraid to try new things, even a margarita. After month 3, I take Gatorade zero packets (easier to take along but only 10g of protein) and some quest bars, and eat about everything and log all foods.

    Stalls suck

    Whenever we lose a lot of weight in a short period of time (15 pounds in 16 days), a substantial amount of the pounds lost is actually water weight. To lose a pound a fat a day, you would need to burn an additional 3500 calories above what you are consuming, which generally is only achieved consistently by peak athletes. If you are sticking to your program's plan, you are still losing fat pounds during a stall as your body regains the excess depleted fluid. Once your body reaches healthy fluid levels, your scales will start reflecting losses again. Please don't get discouraged. For most of us, weight loss is not a steady decline but achieved with periods of losses and stalls as our bodies adjust to the changes.

    Stalls do suck... I am almost a year out and am on a cycle of stall for a month, lose a few pounds, then stall another month and so on... But I am not gaining... so there's that.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

    I feel old at 55 doing this. I went straight for the DS surgery because I want results and don’t want to go back for more weight loss surgeries (skin removal is a possibility). I definitely don’t want to do that again. I had complications after my surgery on the 14th. I was in the hospital an extra 3 days. I didn’t want to post and scare anyone but I’m a week out from surgery now and doing much better. I just need to figure out my eating/drinking schedule since they can’t be done within 30 minutes of each other. I am super excited for the results. From max weight before the pre-surgery diet to now, I’m down 25 pounds!!!

    Food portions

    Stalls are very common & you can have several of them while you are losing. When they occur & how long they last can be quite different though yes the first tends to occur around week three & the usually last 1-3 weeks. It’s the time your buddy uses to reset your digestive hormones & enzymes, metabolic rate, etc in response to your weight loss & new needs. Your stomach is a muscle that stretches & contracts but it will take years of overeating to stretch it out to where it doesn’t contract as effectively & is larger. As for portion sizes, it’s best to check with your dietician for their recommendations for your needs. Some people are given caloric goals as well as goals for all macros. I was only given protein & fluid goals & told 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup from purée slowly increasing to a cup by about 6 months (my goal weight). The majority of that portion should be protein. I was only eating a bare 900 calories at 6 months but many are advised to eat more than that from months 2 or 3. You’ll discover your own portion sizes too i.e. the portion your tummy will tolerate of specific foods at a sitting. Some foods sit more heavily in your tummy or take longer to digest & are more filling so you’ll eat less of them. Some are digested more quickly so unless you are aware of your portion it can be easy to eat more than you need.
  15. I’m sorry you are feeling this way. You are not alone in feeling emotional & having regrets. The surgery & weight loss stirs up your hormones & spin out your emotions. Plus you can’t eat, which is what you likely turned to whenever you were feeling emotional, stressed, etc. in the past. So many of us used food as a comfort & to soothe us. A lot of the hunger you are probably feeling is head hunger not real hunger. Hungry for emotional reasons, hungry out of habit (meal time, snack time, what you’re doing), hungry to eat because others are, etc. You may find a therapist helpful as you work through these early stages (because it does get better & easier). Many find the support of a therapist helpful as they work through the relationship with food, why they ate, habits around eating, etc. Please, please stick to your plan. There are about 12inches of sutures & stables holding your tummy together. The staged return to eating is to protect your tummy while it is healing, and ensure your recovery goes smoothly. I know you have eaten off plan already but you just may have been lucky so far. It’s only for a few weeks. You can do this. Look at your children & think about why you chose to have the surgery.

    I stalled at 6 months for about 9 weeks it was awful but i stuck to the program and the weight started to come off again. Just saw my surgeon and I am no longer in the obese category, overweight and I quote my Dr. "not by much" I need to lose about 25 more LBS. I know it will be much slower now but i am sticking with it. You will start to lose again don't give up!

    Food portions

    most people have their first stall sometime during the first month after surgery, so you're actually a bit late to the party! So yes - early stalls are very common! it's been several years since I had surgery, so someone not as far out can probably answer your question about portion sizes, but as far as stretching your stomach, that doesn't happen - from what I understand, you'd have to overeat day after day after day for that (and i've also heard that the whole stomach-stretching thing is a myth - so I'm not sure which is correct - but suffice it to say, your stomach probably isn't going to stretch). Your stomach capacity is bigger now than it was right after surgery, though, because the swelling has gone down - but it's still pretty small now!
  19. I am 7 weeks post opt and have most restrictions removed with the exception of bread/ rice / beef/ pork. I’m worried about stretching my stomach. Around how much lean protein are you having per meal along with carb/veg? Anyone get weight loss stalls at this stage? I notice the scale has barely moved the last 10 days.
  20. I feel a ashamed of myself for so many reason’s! I got my Vsg on 06/16/2023 I totally regret it. Honestly I rather stay with my health issues and over weight. It’s to the point where I would pay whatever I can to reverse this if I could. i have been hungrier I have cheated on my post op I have had a few bites of different things. I have 5 kids who I cook/lunch/snack prep for and honestly it’s hard not to be around food. I don’t know what to do and I reached out to my nutritionist haven’t heard back from them. I’m going to see my doctor Friday. All I want to do Is cry! 😞 I had got approved for this operation 4 times I didn’t go through the first three times because I honestly wasn’t ready over theses last 8 years. This time around I think it was more of my doctors pressure on me because my health was getting a little worse with my breathing. I’m not saying I constantly want to eat but I want to be able to have a few bites at this point! Also drink water without it hurting 😨. I’m sorry!

    You got this! It's a process. A marathon. But it's totally worth it. I'm almost 8 weeks since having surgery, so the post op stuff is still really fresh. Even now, I would do it all again.

    Hi everyone, I have been dealing with severe constipation (third week since surgery). I did a bit of research and found something that is actually working for me, it is called Fiberex, it is basically concentrated prune juice with fiber. I tastes like concentrated sweet prune juice. I drink one little scoop (comes with it) in the evening and everything is fine the second day. I do not know if it will work for others but I thought I should let everyone know. Of course, before you start it, please consult your medical professional. I was just sick of taking other pharmaceutical products and tried to find something natural. Also, I put together a list of veggies, legumes that have high amount of protein and that might help you when you start incorporating them in your diet. Please see below. I hope this helps some of you.   24. I will add a little math to the equation here: You lost a bunch of weight pre-diet, of which, a very large portion of was water weight. Once you get past that, it can be broken down into a simple calories in - calories out (this is too simplified, but it will get the job done). I went to a website (https://www.garnethealth.org/news/basal-metabolic-rate-calculator) and made some random assumption as your gender/age/etc, and got a resting metabolic rate of just over 3100. Add on another 900 for activities during the day and you are at a nice round 4000 calories burned each day. If your intake is around 600 calories in, then you are at a 3400 calorie deficiency. A pound of fat is roughly 3600 calories, so everyday you should be losing 3400/3600 ~ .95 pounds. So just under a pound a day. That being said, water and other factors can make this fluctuate day to day. Also, all of these numbers are averages and vary from person to person. So if you are noticing less, then maybe your BMR is a little lower than 3100. I was at 307.6 the day of my surgery, and 285.1 3 weeks out or 22.5 pounds down. Since then, I have been consistenly loosing about .6 pounds per day. Not every day, but on average. Stick with the diet your doctor/nutritionist gave you and give it some time. It takes 12-18 months for all of that weight to come off.

    Hi ChewChew! I, too, am told to do the 2 week liquid diet x2 weeks to shrink the liver. They are also doing a liver biopsy on me at that time while my surgeon is there (well, plus I have liver dx.). You're right about everyone having such different plans. Interesting.
