Struggling with weight loss
Happy Stylist replied to Happy Stylist's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Honestly when I started adding foods like grilled chicken and other veggies I started noticing that my weight increased. I’ve lost a few of those pounds but not all. I’m not back eating just yogurt and drinking protein shakes. Occasionally I’ll eat grilled chicken and veggies but I limit it now. My vitamin levels are good. All blood work is good. yes I’ve talked to my wl team. They haven’t been much help ( in my opinion) they just seem to not believe me 🤷🏼♀️ Yes I do have artificial sweeteners. One coffee a day with Splenda and sugar free creamer. Sugar free jello and sugar free redi whip Very little processed food is in my diet. I will eat cheese with my veggies or chichen when I do eat that. Unless what I said above is considered processed. I eat no lunch meat or protein bars. My team has me on low calorie low carb and I stick to it. But occasionally I might go over but it’s not daily or even every other day. I weigh my food and don’t go over the 6 oz of food per meal I get 80 oz of water a day. -
I am on the 21st I started liquid diet (Optifast) on Saturday - for two weeks with 2 cups non-starch vegetables. Have my last pre -op meeting with the surgeon, internal medicine specialist, anesthesiologist, surgical nurse and pharmacist on the 15th - will get my plan for the last two days pre-surgery after the final set of tests - so it sounds like the plans are really personalized - if your team hasn’t said anything maybe you’re fine. I would ask. High protein, low carb in the homestretch sounds safe
-
Did your team give you a pre-op plan? Mine was liquid with a small meal for dinner; 3-4oz protein, 1/4 cup carb/starch, unlimited non-starch veggies. That was days 1-9. Day 10 was 100 liquids.

Gastric Sleeve on 3-30-23
vsg2410 replied to emilee925's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hydrate hydrate hydrate! It’s harder than I anticipated so make sure you have a variety of options to get fluids in - popsicles, broth, SF Gatorade, etc. Good luck! -
I easily hit all my protein goals with protein fortified soy milk (which I used for unsweetened matcha lattes), scrambled or marinated tofu, and shakes/protein water during the soft-food phase. It's such a short period of time, you're not going to become deficient before more options are available to you. The post-op vitamins will certainly help with that anyway. I was still having protein shakes post-op, which I loathed and switched out for vegan protein water which was a nice double-up towards protein and water goals and a lot easier to stomach. I still use protein water to this day. Tofu, edamame, mung beans etc can all be turned into nutritious soups during the puree and soft food stages, before you're able to eat solid foods like seitan. Soy based yoghurt also has a good protein count.

Bread after gastric sleeve?
BriarRose replied to Krasavitza's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
As time goes on, you will figure out what your particular body does. For me, I can eat a slice of bread as a sandwich - I like a tuna sandwich ! Do I eat two pieces of bread and tuna ? Nope. I am 12 years out of a VSG. I can happily eat about half a sandwich, so one slice of thin sliced bread and tuna works for me. I can eat baked potato or baked sweet potato, but a very small one or small portion of one. I cannot eat the same amount of white rice. It just doesn't work for me. If I eat Asian, I sprinkle rice on top of veggies or fish or chicken and veggies and eat maybe a tablespoon or two of rice. If we go out somewhere and the bread looks so sexy, I will have a bit with some butter.... as a treat. but if I have more than a couple small bites, I will not be able to eat much else. I need the protein. And veggies. So I limit my starchy carbs. -
I have ate primarily vegan for three years. I do eat fish/shellfish sometimes. I don't eat dairy or any other animal products except fish/shellfish. I am on the pre-op diet of salad, protein and I alternate with protein shakes. It is boring and I am hungry I am concerned about the liquid diet after and puree and soft food phase. I am concerned about getting nutrition. Iron, protein.. I bought a multivitamin. Any vegan food ideas for those phases.

Struggling with weight loss

I’m sorry you are going through this frustrating time. Just throwing a few things out there. I could be widely off the mark but … Are you eating a good balance of food so you get in a range if nutrients? I’m guilty of having the odd yoghurt meal or protein only meal but it’s balanced by the variety of food I eat for my other meals throughout that day. Your body needs a variety of nutrients, vitamins & enzymes to be able to digest & absorb the nutrients, vitamins, etc from what you eat. Do you predominately eat low or no processed foods i.e. a whole food diet? Do you consume a lot of artificial sweeteners? What does your blood test show in relation to vitamins & proteins, glucose, cholesterol, etc.? Have you had a liver scan or other tests? Have you spoken with your surgeon or just the dieticians? Could there be an absorption issue? Maybe your body needs more of certain food types like carbs to function more effectively? The stress & anxiety you’re feeling could be contributing. Certainly adding to your hair loss I’d think. Viscous cycle in play. Our bodies usually work to protect us but sometimes can work against us too. All the best. -
I just discovered a protein you might want to try. It’s called TrueFit, by a company called RSP Nutrition. It has pro & pre-biotics and it’s supposedly way better on your stomach.

PROTIEN BARS AND YOUR PLAN

Yeah that's definitely unique. I personally had trouble eating protein bars for a few months (3months) so hopefully that goes well! -
March 23 buddies yet?

My bag is packed, ready to go. Check In at the hospital at 5:30 tomorrow morning. It is hard to believe that I have come this far already and the day is finally here. Although I know this journey has only just begun I have to celebrate the small successes along the way of making the decision to make a change, seeking help, making a true commitment, sticking to the plan, working the program, working on me and recommitting each and every day to keep loving me and working to improve me. We all can do this! Here's to determination! Here's to LIVING! HERE'S TO US! If it is not too difficult or stressful for you, I say go and enjoy yourself but drink your protein prior and enjoy sipping on your teas, broths, etc while they eat and you all socialize. I am on day 10 of 14 and took my son to dinner for his birthday last week with family and did exactly that and was so glad that I went and enjoyed myself. It didn't bother me at all nor anyone else as they understood (many of whom I didn't feel the need to explain the full situation but simply if asked why I wasn't eating I explained I had an upcoming medical procedure and was on a very limited diet. No questions asked. Enjoy yourself! You can't stop living! This is only the beginning of life-long changes when we will not be able to eat as others do. Good luck and be strong. This is your life, live it! ❣️ -
March 23 buddies yet?

I also had my surgery on March 3rd. I am feeling great! I was basically out of it for 12 hours after surgery but by the night of surgery I was up and running like the Eveready Battery Bunny. I have had no nausea and only slight muscle soreness similar to if I had been doing sit-ups. I have been able to get my liquid down without issue, which includes 3 bottles of Premier Protein Clear daily so I can get in at least 60g of protein, So far, so good....I am very pleased. How are you doing? -
I had surgery in Mexico on 3/3/23. I did not go to Tijuana, having heard too many negative reviews of the Bariatric groups in that region. I went to Dr. Alvarez at Endobariatrics. Dr. Alvarez's EndoHospital is across the border from Eagle Pass, TX. I was self-pay so money was an issue but not at the expense of my health and peace of mind. Dr. Alvarez's fee is substantially less than in the USA but more than the average cost of most of the Mexico bariatric centers. The old saying "you get what you pay for" could not be more apropos. Dr. Alvarez's credentials are most impressive and his memberships in American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO) highlighted his expertise in the field of bariatric surgery. Dr. Alvarez's facilities incorporate the EndoHospital and the EndoHotel in a beautiful state-of-the-art building. Dr. Alvarez is very accessible to his patients and the staff is professional, personable and attentive to the patient's every need. All personnel are fluently bi-lingual. Off-site, the EndoSpa provides additional pampering. I am only 5 days out and feel great. I have had no nausea and only slight abdominal discomfort similar to muscle soreness experienced from exercising. The day after surgery, I joined the guided sight-seeing tour, had a HydraFacial and a massage (yes, I was able to lie on my stomach) at the EndoSpa, and finished my outing with a visit to a restaurant for a delicious smoothie. I have heard many complaints from others as to hidden fees from some of the Mexico bariatric groups....basically holding the patient hostage until they are paid. Dr. Alvarez's fees are all inclusive with exception to any optional spa treatments the patient choses to enjoy. My words of praise seem inadequate to my experience with Dr. Alvarez! I wish you the best in your quest. As self-pay, cost is a factor; but be cautious of placing pricing over health and safety.

4 weeks out and scale isn't budging
TRAVELRN replied to lexylynn92's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Slow your eating down and do not drink with meals. 30 min before or after meals no fluids. Take a bite, put the spoon or fork down and chew that stuff up till its practically liquified. If you are dehydrated due to vomiting or dumping syndrome you need to get that straightened out so just do liquids. Protein drinks, etc. Reset. -

I would recommend doing a food diary for a month. This will really pinpoint what you may be missing. Water, water, water is almost as crucial as protein. There might be something that you are overlooking. -
Sleeve surgery is April 12, 2023, Input please!
CountryGardens posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My sleeve surgery is scheduled for April 12, 2023. I am 5’6, 400 pounds., 60 years old. My mother and grandmother were both obese. At 16 I was 116 pounds, with undiagnosed PCOS. I had uterine cancer at 39, and had a hysterectomy. No hormone replacement as they felt it was a hormone based cancer. At 55 had a swollen thyroid removed. Each time, my weight increased. Three years ago, I had a spinal injury, which led to back fusion surgery, which caused nerve damage, and a right dropfoot. I have to use a rolling walker or cane to walk, and my back surgeon says I can’t lift more than ten pounds. I know I need this sleeve surgery, and I want to live and get healthy. But I am still nervous about doing this to my body. My surgeon says sleeve now, perhaps a revision to bypass after I have lost weight if necessary. I have five hernias which I had surgery to repair, which is why I believe he wants the sleeve first. I wonder if the potential of two surgeries is too much at my age, or just a bypass and be done with it. And I am worried about my inability to walk and exercise due to my disability. In my head I think, maybe if I just cut back on food, drink two or three protein drinks a day I will lose weight without surgery. After all, that seems to be what they want us to DO AFTER surgery! Any advice or sharing your journey would be so appreciated! Thank you! -
Oh y’all. It’s been a little bit since I’m been on this forum. I’m struggling with any weight loss. It’s like I’ve hit a wall for the last 3 months. This is my stats. SD 4/26/22 / SW 216 / CW 175 / GW 130 / age 50 My team has me under 700 cal and less than 20 carbs a day. I use to basically eat yogurt for almost every meal 🤷🏼♀️. But my team say I wasn’t getting enough protein and my body was probably bored and that was causing my slow down in weight. So they had me to mix things up. So I started eating more protein (meats, chicken etc) well then I started started gaining 😡. My last weight in back in January was 173. I gained up to 180 when adding back food. Now I’m down to 175 but I can’t get the scale to move. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong 😑. My hair is still falling out and I’m definitely getting my protein and my vitamin levels are good. I just don’t feel like my team believes me when I tell them I’m not going over calories or carbs. I’m just beyond frustrated at this point.

So, out of surgery, they gave me Dilaudid. Second day in hospital was Toridol. I was sent home with Oxycodone. They said the oxy was for the nerve pain. I was also told to take 1000mg of Tylenol every 4-6 hours and not to miss a dose, let it build up. The Tylenol was for the muscle cramps and pressure. There is regular liquid Tylenol you may want to try. I was off the Oxy quick as I had no incision pain and didn’t want to get constipated as narcotics slow your digestion. I kept up with the Tylenol for a few more days until pressure subsided. By day 3-4, on nothing for pain. The gas-x I still take as the broths, protein shakes, etc can give gas. I take one in both am and pm. They also recommended Colace to keep stool soft.

Have lost weight and am struggling to get daily water, protein, calories in. Anyone else had complications? I know it’s rare but just trying to connect with someone as it’s been hard. Good luck to everyone 😀

Pancreas problems
Arabesque replied to oldandtired's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is interesting (though I’m sure not for you). Out of curiosity did they say if this is a temporary or permanent issue? Wondering if it is similar to how other hormones & enzymes can go crazy while we are losing but settle again (often at a better level) once our weight stabilises. How are they treating you? Since my gall removal I don’t absorb protein well so I take creons which are a pancreatic enzymes which can firm bowel movements up for some. Wonder if they would help you too? Sorry for the questions. -
Milk is better, unless it becomes too rich, to make yoghurt into a yoghurt drink. Plus extra protein from the milk. Bonus!
-
It can be hard at first to hit those goals. Your poor tummy is super sensitive, your taste buds may have changed (temporary) & you’re likely not hungry or interested in eating. As long as you’re close & working towards your goals it’s okay. Don’t forget your shakes & broths count as fluids too. Shakes usually are 20-30g of protein depending on the brand. Sip them just like you do your other fluids - doesn’t matter if it takes an hour or more to drink your shake. I used to add twice the water to the mix to dilute the flavour & texture of the shake & to get down more fluids. It would take me a couple of hours to drink one but it was 1/4 of my fluid & a good 1/3 of my protein goals. You’ll get there.

PROTIEN BARS AND YOUR PLAN
maintenanceman replied to heatherdbby's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Quest Bars are the best for me. 20 g of protein, almost half daily allowance of fiber, 180-190 calories, not a lot of crazy ingredients. And they taste great. I usually have one a day. Look at labels carefully because many/most protein bars are basically candy... not a lot of protein, loads of calories/fat. -
I've never liquified it, never occured to me, and I've never seen where we need to?. I have just eaten it as is (I am 12 days Post Op) It's a little variety from another Protein shake!

The pancreas produces other enzymes besides insulin; for example, trypsin and chymotrypsin to digest proteins; amylase to digest carbohydrates; and lipase to break down fats. So it is possible for some types of cells in the pancreas to function correctly and others not.
