Can't exercise, can you still succeed?
joatsaint replied to Scorpion11's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had severe pain in my feet, so right after surgery, I wasn't able to walk. But I did what I could at the time - which was a few laps around the inside of my workplace. And parking as far from the entrance to stores to force myself to walk a little more. I didn't do any continuous walking till about my 2nd month post-op - I was able to work my way up to 20 minutes of continuous walking each day. Now at 12 months post-op, I walk 4 to 5 miles a day, 4 to 5 days a week. I was able to easily lose weight without exercise for the 1st 6 months, but after that, my body adjusted to the lower caloric intake and it became more difficult. Here's the blog post where I tracked my walking progress. http://www.bariatricpal.com/blog/9018/entry-31216-nsv-2-you-best-step-off-b-hatch/ -
Congrats on your new grandson and your NSV!!

Oh, in other NSV news, I can no longer wear the pants I wore around the time of my surgery. I've moved buttons, had them pinned tighter and washed everything in hot water and placed in the dryer....and still too big! Yay! -
These are fun to read from vets! Like M2G said, the further out you are the fewer the NSV's become. I do have a couple that happened recently though...I had to order a size smaller in my spanx! Also, I now have area in between my legs where my thighs don't touch! (only while I am wearing said spanx, but hey I'll take it!)

NSV: went up a flight of stairs twice and while my legs were tired, my knees didn't hurt/ache!!

My favorite NSV to date (and this one will be hard to beat). Back in September, a few weeks pre-op, I joined a local gym to add to my home treadmill options. The step glider there kicked my tail! If I kept the pace up just at that thing's stall speed, my heart rate would go way too high. After ten minutes of trying to workout and that thing pausing all the time, I gave up and went back to the treadmill. This week, I did 65 minutes on it (on level 5 hills) and kept my heart rate dead in the middle of "cardio" workout. This is my favorite because it speaks to the real reasons behind this surgery--to get healthy. Oh yes, and my A1C dropped from a 6.8 to a 5.1.

I love all the NSV's! I just got a new phone so I have been going through my old photos on FB. I have been telling my family that when I look in the mirror I still see a fat person. Lately looking in the mirror I am seeing someone else, not a fat person, more like a stranger. Well back to the photos, the fat person in them is definitely not who I am. I'm trying to train myself off the scale -- it makes me crazy sometimes. A small gain or a plateau can be so frustrating even though I know it's fine and that I'm probably losing inches, fitting into jeans that were tight before, etc. Those are important things to look out for......the Non-Scale Victories, NSVs. You are doing beautifully -- tell yourself that every day because it is true!

Yes, thanks for starting this Georgia! It is true, the further out we get, the harder it is sometimes to find NSV's. One I had a few weeks ago...I always shop on the clearance racks because I am cheap. Well, I was at a store and saw a great pair of pants. I held them up, they looked like they might fit, but I looked at the tag and they were a size 3. I thought I would give them a try, and low and behold they fit! I walked out of the room beaming and the girl asked me how I did. I said I tried them on not thinking they would fit. She said, well what size are they? When I told her that I normally wear a size 6 and these were a 3, she looked me up and down and said "I would have never guessed your were size 6!" in a good way (not I thought you would be bigger, but in I thought you would be smaller tone!). I still grin when I think about it!!

Try using my fitness pal to track your intake. You said "you try to keep up with your protein" Could be you're not getting enough. I use my fitness pal to track every single morsel of food and liquid I put in my mouth. Once you get the hang of using it...it's a breeze. I agree with Curvy too. Make sure, you're checking your measurements, NSV are very important. Good luck..and hang in there. -

WHen you're right out of making the most enormous change of your life and it doesn't go like you thought it would, it's scary and nerve wracking. Holy Hell, have some patience isn't the most supportive response I've ever seen. Here's what I know: The sleeve works, first of all. You may not lose fast and you may not lose like you want to lose, but the sleeve works. Patience is absolutely key. Tell us about where you started-- Highest weight, start weight, current weight. How about inches? I lost TONS of inches but very little scale weight. I STILL lose slowly on the scale but the inches are where it's at. Are your clothes loose/baggy? Seeing any changes in your body that don't translate to scale numbers? Remember your NSV's - non scale victories- What doesn't hurt that used to hurt? what can you do that you couldn't? What's your post op plan been like? I know this is VERY hard but everyone else is EVERYONE ELSE. Not YOU. So don't worry about them....you have to focus on YOUR plan and YOUR body. You can't go back, so keep moving forward. Have a talk with your nutritionist about your food needs... at a month out I was jUST starting to eat solids, and I had lost maybe 12 lbs. -
Eight Weeks Out and a New Year!
Jim1967 replied to Bandista's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Green zone is truly amazing but it can be tough to find but in time you will. It took me nearly 6 months to finally get into the green zone. My last fill was Jan 29, 2012 and the weight and inches have been coming off ever since and the portions are small and the head hunger is practically non existent. I love my band and it is amazing the life this little device has given back to me. Stay the course and it can happen for you as well. There will be tough times and perhaps discouragement and times when patience is thin but one thing you must do above all else and that is keep going! Keep your eye on the prize and keep going. Remember even if the scale is not moving you could still be losing inches. Look for NSV's to help motivate you. For me it was about jeans feeling loser or more slack in my belt. Good luck all! -
Good NSV for you!!!

Well, since this is the Vet's Forum, the farther you get out from surgery the harder it is to find those NSV (they typically hit when you are less than a year post-op for many of us!) So Georgia, I love that you started this. My most recent NSV of memory was this. A gal that I only know from the gym (see her regularly about 3-4x a week), she is tall and slender and beautiful. Super-nice girl. So she texted me right before Christmas saying "do you happen to have an ugly Christmas sweater I can borrow, I have a party to attend and don't have one to wear." Unfortunately I don't own any ugly Christmas sweaters (seems to be quite the rage to have parties and contests surrounding the "ugly" Christmas sweater) but anyway, more importantly, she thought we must be in the same "SIZE RANGE!" Wow. What a nice compliment to be "normal enough" to be able to trade clothes!

I have another NSV relating to clothes & sizes - yesterday I go (with my husband) to Dress Barn. I was looking for skinny jeans (my 1st pair-lol). They have a plus side & a "regular" side. So I go over to the plus side and grab a 16 and I told the little girl working in there - I swear if these fit me I'm going to be balled up crying on the floor. I told her that I had wls recently and I've been losing weight & I don't know my size. Well They fit! And I come out of the dressing room and the little girl was like I think you can fit in the size 16 on the other side. So she goes over to the other side & sure enough all of the ones she picked out fit! My husband was saying "see you don't have to be on the "other side" anymore (meaning the PLUS size). So I got a pair of skinny jeans in a regular 16!!! I used to wear a 22W - 3 months ago! I got so emotional. Recently the office manager was talking to me about my body changing. I told her that I was still overweight and that I needed to lose more weight. She said "you aren't seeing yourself like everyone else sees you, you honestly look like you've lost half of what you were." Well - right now I still see myself as being that overweight person because I was her for so long. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. I'm happy and this is what I want more than anything, but I think that my mind is my old size and my body has changed but my mind doesn't know it yet? I can't be the only one that feels this way. Sorry - ranting... -
So I've always been big on the bottom....huge butt, thunder thighs and cankles. But from the waist up I've been OK. The beginning of the end was when my torso got bigger, then my arms. I could no longer wear certain long sleeved shirts. Then my dangly bracelets got snug and my rings were too tight. Fat wrists?!? Seriously?! That was one of my "last straws". So yesterday, I noticed I could see the individual tendons in my hands (which were chubby butterballs as I watched my preop nurse look for a vein 12 days ago) So I thought I would check it out further. Guess what! My rings slide on and off easily. No ring indentation mark on my finger. Yeah! Looks like I'm going to lose in the reverse order as I gained.

I can almost hear your bank account crying from here in Canada. Haha just kidding, congratulations!! I'm holding off on all purchases until I absolutely need to (which shouldn't be a for awhile, I have had so many dieting struggles that I have goal clothes from years and years back so I should be ok for awhile). Make sure to take a picture of whatever NSV presents you pick up

For the past couple of years as weight has piled on I have not been able to wear most shoes. Most shoes cut into my foot and cause me much pain. I have resulted to wearing soft leather loafers. In fact, I finally found a pair of Michael Kors loafers that I could wear comfortable and bought every color. So, they have been my shoe collection this fall and winter. Christmas of 2011, my mother bought me a beautiful pair of black leather ankle boots. I could never fit them. They just sat in my closet on the shelf. I threw away most of my other shoes thinking I would never wear "regular" shoes again. Anyway, I tried on the ankle boots this morning and WHAM they fit! My foot fit right in!! In less than 2 weeks, this very significant part of my life has changed! So off I go! Shoe shopping!!!

NSV shout outs
gouldsgirl2001 replied to BobBayCityMI's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I had my first NSV the other day. My 10 year old daughter put her arms around my waist and said, " Mom! I can get my arms right around you and clasp my hands together!" I have to say, I was elated at her delight and the fact that she noticed she could do that and told me! -
Does anyone regret this surgery?
slikchik10 replied to Wenniegirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, gonna be ugly for a moment.....but we're you expecting magic results?!? Your just 3 weeks out. This means you're in the middle of healing and recovering. Give yourself a break! Keep in mind this is a LONG TERM thing, not a "poof it's gone" process. If you can't be happy with ANY loss, then this process will be hard. Cut yourself a break for pity's sake. I'm 7 mos. out, 53 lbs. down and at a weight & size I've not seen in 30 years!! This has not come in big chunks, it's been a pound here and a pound there...from the beginning! My first month was NOT my biggest loss...just slow and steady. Find something each day to be grateful for each day/week. It can be a NSV or not. OH, and don't compare your journey to others you read about on here!!!! There might be some similarities but it's still YOUR journey and there will be differences that are unique to you. Sorry to be a bit harsh, but in the words of Cher in Moonstruck "Snap out of it!!" This is not a "sprint" to goal but a "marathon." Hugs and good luck. :-)
