    Back Pain when walking

    Thank you. I talked to my doctor but she just said my back was adjusting to the change in my weight and keep trying. The VA is really understaffed and they tend to brush you off so they can move on to the next. I'll go get a massage then go to the chiropractor and see if that helps.

  4. I totally agree with you, I should have done this about 8 years earlier! And your right, whenever i "think" i miss cookies, coca cola etc, i remind myself that those foods are poison to your body!! Listen to your weight loss team and stick with the plan!

  6. I couldn't find this topic when I searched back pain. I lost 40 lobs before surgery, and a week after surgery when I tried to go walking I got a stitch in my back. I've tried not drinking while I walk, not drinking before I walk, not eating or drinking before or while I walk, and 2 months out I still can't walk from the parking garage into the clinic to see my doctor without my back hurting. The longer I walk the more it hurts and the longer I have to sit before it stops. I know my spine and the muscles have to adjust to the new weight dynamic, but this didn't happen with the 40 lbs pre-surgery and when it started I hadn't lost additional weight yet. I've lost an additional 20 now. I'm getting married a month from today and I'm afraid I'm going to spend my honeymoon in the room instead of exploring Toronto.

    Exercise after surgery

    Walking was my main thing until they cleared me for normal routine. Then stretching. Then rowing. Then stability. Then core and back... LOTS of core and back! Then weights. Set goals, stay hydrated, wear earbuds, have fun. When you're able to, I can't stress the importance of stretching, and getting our core and back in order, enough. It makes every single thing so much easier.

    September surgery buddies!!

    Wow, you are doing amazing!! Thank you for sharing how you are doing. I keep wondering how our group is progressing. You look wonderful and sounds like you are on a great track. My progress has slowed down sooo much. I even adjusted my goal to just hit normal weight so that it would look closer and help my brain mentality. I am really close but I sat at the same weight for almost 2 months and just last week had a nice 5 lb loss all at once. So I'm guessing it was the breaking of the stall at last, But these last 10 lbs and hopefully more might take me another year at the rate I'm going. My restriction is still the same, which was never very restricted to begin with. I'm still not super hungry yet which I'm happy about. My hair loss is slowing and I have baby hairs sprouting up in curls which looks weird but I'm happy to have them. I need to get back into the positive mindset because these last few month of no loss or very little loss has been depressing and I need to start appreciating all the good changes. Thank you for updating though and I hope more people come back and update too

    Pouch reset?

    since you're at a normal BMI, your calories in/calories out are probably at about equilibrium. It's a real battle to get any more off. Not to say that you can't, but it'll be a struggle. I know the closer I got, the harder it was. There were months I only lost a pound or two, despite a ton of work. This is where you're at now. I wouldn't bother with pouch "resets" now. They don't really work, and it gets you back into diet mentality. You can always take off more weight, but the closer you get to a normal BMI (and you're already there), the harder it is and the slower it comes off. That's just biology. If you DO want to drop a few more lbs, as the person above said, monitoring your calories and bumping up your exercise is the way to do it, with the realization that it's going to be V-E-R-Y slow going from here on out.
  10. I have just returned from a three week holiday in Greece and I am exactly the same weight as when I set off. In my past I could add 7 -14 pounds to my weight. I walked around in my swimwear and did not need to hide behind a towel. So liberating

    Pouch reset?

    The best advice I can give it to determine your BMR. This is the calories you need to sustain your current weight and conditions. There are calculators online to help you determine your BMR. From there I would log everything you eat, drink, take for a day or two to see if your calorie intake is above your BMR if so, cut back. There are also calculators that tell you your BMR and what calories you should be consuming for a specific weight loss per week. I think a lot of people regain weight or have trouble losing that last 10 pounds because they get comfortable and start grazing. Portions trend up a bit and before you know it, you gain back a little. So, rather than trying a reset, liquid diet, any kind of diet, Id work on getting control of calories in or increasing exercise. Good luck!
  12. Hello I have had a lot of success after my gastric sleeve. Been six months since surgery . I got to a normal BMI the first week of May. Haven’t lost any weight since. I am by no means complaining. But my goal is to get my bmi around 23.5 so about ten more lbs. reasoning for this is because I heard some people tend to gain a little weight after surgery once they meet their goal. I want to keep my bmi in normal range hopefully for the rest of my life. Anywho, has anybody tried the pouch reset? Does it work? Would it help me to make progress towards these last ten lbs? Thanks!

    Gastric Sleeve to SADI-S

    Not sure what to say about how to get your insurance to cover a revision, but if you're having reflux problems then maybe have Bypass instead. I had the Sadi-S myself, and have lucked out that my EOE didn't cause the acid issues to get worse (I have acid issues at night due to EOE a.k.a Eosinophilic Esophagitis). If you do get the Sadi-S here's some advice... 1. don't go too long without something in your stomach even if it's applesauce or fruit, etc. because if I wait to long inbetween eating my bowels decide to empty everything in them. (TMI, but you should know so you can avoid it happening to you) 2. Always take a probiotic every day because it helps with keeping you regular 3. I don't know if it's a common thing for Sadi-S or other surgeries or if it's just me... but I haven't been able to throw up since my surgery... 3 years ago (and yes, I've been sick and dry heaved for hours, but couldn't throw up). 4. having any WLS with a malabsorption factor gives you a 3% chance of developing a wheat allergy or Celiac's (I got the wheat allergy because my luck is ****). And, 5. I don't know if it's just a DS or Sadi-S thing, but there is a chance after surgery that you will vomit old blood (if this counts as vomiting then this is the only time I've thrown up since surgery. It happened three or four times while I was in the hospital after surgery. They didn't warn me and it scared the **** out of me). Anyway, yeah... I'm happy with my surgery choice, but if I'd had another chance I think I'd have gone for the original DS since it has slightly better weight loss results. I had the normal gain back you get going into your third year and straddle between 188-193 which I've been for 9 months. Also, any time you have surgery, ANY surgery, you risk the chance of health problems popping up that you would have got a little later in life. I developed Mast Cell Activation Syndrome after my WLS and it's been a b***h to deal with. I mean, technically the doctor told me she thinks I probably already had the beginnings of it before the surgery and the surgery itself just... made it progress to a more severe case (apparently they noticed a trend in people with EOE developing MCAS so it was pretty much going to happen anyway). But still. Health issues can pop up after surgery. So just be aware of it. Hopefully everything goes well for you and sorry for the word vomit.
  14. Hi folx, My highest weight was 383 lbs in November 2020. I have Sleep Apnea, Hypertension (Managed Well on Meds), Acid Reflux, Mild Hiatal Hernia, and Anomalous Right Coronary Artery. When I had my sleeve surgery in November 2020, my BMI was 50.1. I was on a steady decline post op. I exercise, and somewhat maintain diet. I don’t overeat, but I am also not as religious as immediately following surgery. I have a new insurance provider because of a new job and would like to consider revision to a SADI-S since the gastric sleeve part is already done. And, it’s been shown to have the best long term outcomes. I have bariatric benefits, but I would like to know what I need to do to get my insurance to cover a revision. Also, after speaking to some medical professionals, I learned that with a BMI of 50.1, I probably should have had DS or Bypass to begin with. Why didn’t my doctor talk to me more about other options. I mean I had a great Doc. Best by far. But would have liked to had some more conversations. I know that DS won’t fix the reflux, but I think it could help address the other things. Thoughts?

    July 2023 buddies

    Hi, I got my date for vsg last week, July 31st. Completed all my pre-op requirements and got insurance approval, just waiting for my appointment in mid-July to see what my pre-surgery diet will be. I'm excited but also nervous. I've gone back and forth on the surgery vs. trying those new weight loss drugs but i really feel that the vsg is the best long term solution for hopefully getting the weight off and keeping it off. Looking forward to stopping the dieting merry-go-round I've been on for 30 years. I've told my Mom and one friend at work and both have been supportive. Don't think I'll really be sharing it with anyone else. I've been getting support and some really good information on the /gastricsleeve reddit (i'm a Reddit junkie) and watching youtube videos of other people's journey's.

    Stall

    Hang in there and keep your eye on the long term prize! I am feeling your pain and currently struggling with 10 day stall at 4 1/2 months post op. This is probably my 3rd stall so far. I’ve lost 70 lbs (includes pre and post op) so know I’m on the right track. Its hard to mentally keep things in perspective when we depend on the daily encouragement of seeing the scale drop. If it doesn’t move I have to fight the mental battle that I’m failing. Im still learning how to not completely obsess over the weight loss and allow myself to enjoy where I’m at today. It’s hard to do! I find great encouragement from those on this site who are veterans at this point and have experienced everything before. I have to trust their wisdom and keep to my eating plan and track my food intake religiously. I admit I find it very difficult not to weigh-in daily. That is my challenge for sure but I do measure every 4-6 weeks. I’ve been so surprised to see how many inches I’ve lost each time. I encourage you to get a soft measuring tape! Also take weekly photos. I upload them to my Baritastic app and amazed to scroll backwards and see how far I’ve come.
  19. I agree with the others: it’s not the cashews. Stalls are a common & important part of your weight loss. It’s when your body shuts down to take stock of your changing needs & then resets things like your metabolism, digestive hormones, etc. They usually last 1-3 weeks. Do look for a lunch that is going to offer more protein (1oz cashews provides only 5g of protein) & includes other foods for a wider variety of nutrients. Try a meat like chicken or tuna, or tofu or a boiled egg, etc. with a small side of salad vegetables, or an omelette, soup, etc. Have a chat with your dietician for some meal ideas

    Exercise after surgery

    All I've done since surgery is walking. 5-10 minutes, starting out, to help prevent blood clots. Second week I increased my time to 15 then progressively increased it to 30. 7 weeks out I shoot for 5xs a week. I don't push myself to power walk. Just leisurely. Now that the weather is nice, I walk outside instead of on my treadmill. I really enjoy the sunshine. Also, I try to drink/eat protein as soon as I'm done. The "Golden Hour" is within 45-60 minutes immediately after exercise when your muscles absorb nutrients more so than any other time of the day. Eventually I want to start weights and buy a Rogue air bike.
  21. One thing that we do during stalls is overthink & blame very normal things for it. This stall was most likley going to happen whether you were eating nuts or lettuce leaves, just stick to your plan & you will see results! I personally only use nuts as a topping as they can be quite calorie dense, but a little bit at a time won't cause much harm especially if they are salt-free (salty ones can however make you retain water weight)

Nuts are pretty calorie-dense and can cause weight gain if you eat a lot of them, but 1 ounce of cashews is about 160 calories (could be more if they have added ingredients, e.g., honey-roasted) and have no more impact on your weight than 160 calories from any other food. Are you including that in your 700 calories per day or is that in addition? Either way, you are under 1000 calories per day, which is low enough that you will continue to lose weight (especially if you're working out 60-90 minutes per day). Stalls are very common and normal. Weight loss isn't linear. Stick with your program and your weight loss will resume. I'm guessing that BMI is in error. I suspect the weight is meant to be 235 pounds and not 235 kg (518 pounds). While it's possible that she actually weighs 518 pounds, her goal weight of 150 kg (330 pounds) would be unusually high for a goal weight. Still, even at a weight of 235 pounds (BMI of 39), less than 1000 calories per day is well below TDEE.
  23. No. That's nuts. You have a BMI of 86, you could be eating half a pound of cashews for lunch and you'd still lose weight. Not as fast as you are now, but at a good clip. That being said, the macro spread (ratio of fats, carbohydrates, and protein) of cashews isn't great. If you're only getting 700 calories a day, you need to be prioritizing protein and nuts aren't really a protein food. They're mostly fat. Again, eating them will not stop you from losing weight, but you need protein to ensure that the mass you're losing trends toward fat mass and not lean mass. Depending on what you're eating throughout the rest of the day, you might want to switch the cashews for a protein-dense food most days.
  24. I am really hoping I haven’t been sabotaging myself the last 2 weeks. My program cleared me for nuts so for lunch everyday I was just grabbing a portioned out bag of cashews, 1 ounce. I’m 3 months post op and have been in a stall the last 2 weeks. My calories are around 700 a day and I go to the gym everyday for 60-90 minutes. Could the cashews be preventing me from losing weight? I had thought this was something good for us and now I’m not so sure after having read a little on it. Do you think cashews should go into the category of a once every few weeks treat instead of a lunch option?

    3 Days Post Op - Just Documenting My Journey

    I also have a similar story. 46 yrs old with heart issues (double bypass in 2018.) Before my surgery, just one month before yours, I was on two blood pressure meds. I stopped taking them the day before surgery and at my first week post op visit my blood pressure was already within normal range without the meds. I was in shock! Especially because my blood pressure was always high, even with the meds!! I have my one month post op visit coming up in 2 days, interested in seeing where I'm at. I also hit the ground running and was walking up to two miles a day after surgery and received the same warnings as you got above... haha! Once I slowed down to let my body heal, the weight started dropping off. 30 pounds down since surgery day. Good Luck! Lots of good advice on here, even though it felt like I was getting scolded sometimes! 🙂
