1 month out! Good & bad!

HI Proudgrammy, WOW! I hope a year from now, my profile will say 100 pounds lost GReat Job on that!!! Anyway, on my 1 month follow up, I already had a talk with MD and Nut- they recommended eating 3 meals, with 2 Snacks in between. Especially I am only taking small portions and that would help with my hypoglycemia. I had issues with hypoglycemia prior to surgery so this is not new for me- I still keep my calories but spread throughout the day. I am not limiting them to 600, but still can't eat very much, so I eat until I feel full. MFP is great in tracking it! I am relearning my eating habits bec I am so used to eating very fast and chugging my drinks right after. I still do that and forget sometimes, and the feeling is not very good- I can feel the pressure as the Water goes down, that’s why I wait now & it takes so long to eat esp now im eating soft/solids have to chew well, otherwise I can feel the pressure as it goes down too. BUT it’s getting better, before I used to wait 30mins to drink, and now I can at 10-15 mins and take 2-3 larger sips. If I drink too much its uncomfortable. MD said the minimum for me is 40oz and make sure I drink at least that, otherwise I will end up in trouble- but ultimately, goal is 640z. Thank you for your concern! It's been a long month, and hopefully it gets easier down the road.

    No April Fool's

Ok, it's the beginning of April so it's no better time to start. I have scheduled all my appointments but am worried that my "doctor supervised" 6 month diet stint will not be accepted because it was 4 1/2 years ago. I started in July of 03 & ended in Nov. 04 with those. I lost 62 lbs but of course have gained most of it back. I''m excited and scared and yesterday being the first of the month I wanted to be "good" and all I could think about was ice cream from Culvers. Which went went and had along with cheezeburgers and fries for dinner. I disgust myself. Get some control girlfriend.! I think it's just because I'm like you have about 3-4 weeks to eat what ever you want so get it out of your system. I had to gain 10 lbs to hit the 40 BMI so now that thought process is lingering ... I need to get over it quick because I feel like CRAP!!!

    Feeling Good Again

Ok- so I am 10 days post op and I finally got my color back and feel better. I was really worried because I usually bounce right back from things, but not this surgery. I am feeling hopeful now and my energy has returned. Still on liquid diet and doing great! I kind of like this muscle milk. Ha ha! Thank you to everyone for your kind words and support!

    Any opinions about Paraguard?

I had a paragard for 3 months. It slipped too low. After a lot of bleeding& pain, I got it out. My midwife didn't believe the bleeding was from poor positioning even tho the strings were much llonger every month, I've never had unprotected sex& made me pay for an std panel. All clear. I'm concerned about uterine scarring. The insertion was fine. I had the cervix softening med, but after that I had contraction like pain, bled 10 days the 1st month, 14 days the 2nd, & all of January. No time for sex & was really inconvenient. My normal periods were 4 days. I'm starting the minipill& praying for no weight gain or negative effects.

    Start running?

Hi everyone, I had surgery 3/19 and have lost 14lbs. I have mainly walked 2 miles 4 times a week and want to increase my activity to start running again. When did people start more streneous excercise after their surgery? I tried to run for a minute or so the other day and got dizzy. I don't want to push it too soon but the loss has already help increase my energy level and want to get back to running. Thanks
  7. 16W is for Women's....which means it's larger for a "woman" than a regular size 16. If you shop at Lane Bryant (or similar store) which I'm sure most of us ladies do or have shopped there....all of their clothes are W's. I remember when I started putting on the weight....I could still fit into a size 16 Lane Bryant but I could not fit into any "regular" store 16's...and so it began 10 years ago!!! I am so excited to read these posts and KNOW that I can get back to the old me. I can't wait for people not to recognize me! ...for being skinny and not fat....I went through that too...that is horrible. CowgirlJane - you inspire me!!!!!
  8. Good habit to break. I was not a night eater and I'm grateful because even months later eating solid food at night isn't possible. It fires my acid reflux. I usually go to bed at 10 and my last food is at 7. I don't get hungry during the night but I'm ready to eat in the morning. And that 3 hours is enough time that the reflux does not happen.

  10. Thank you both for the great advice. I do try to plan my meals out. I usually have a granola bar and yogurt for breakfast, a lean cuisine or smart one and a sugar free pudding for lunch, and two healthy snacks one at 10 and one at 3. Dinner seems to be the problem. I plan a healthy meal but end up overeating so it doesn't even matter how healthy it was b/c I end up having 3-4 servings. My main problems are eating out and portion control in the evening. @laylasmonjo - I bought the womens Once a Day vitamin but everytime I take it I throw up if I don't eat something IMMEDIATELY after. I mean like take it and then shove something else down there before it comes up. I guess I just have a really sensitive gag reflex. I will try to see if I can find something that goes down better. My other thing is that it is just me and my son so we have a lot left over and it usually gets wasted if I don't eat it. Thank you for the support. @tdov1 - I loved my crockpot but mine caught fire and charred the wires. lol! I had it on the stove and turned on the wrong burner. I need to get a new one. I tried WW too and it worked very well for me but I don't have the money right now and keeping track of the points was really time consuming. Thanks for your great advice.
  11. I have seen pork butt cooked on cooking shows & it always looks soooo yummmmy. So, I saw one in the grocery store the other day & grabbed it. -pork butt 5-8 lbs -rub w/ brown sugar, garlic powder, pepper, few splashes soysauce. -BBQ sauce (Sweet Baby Rays Honey bbq sauce I like) in bottom of crockpot. -put pork in POT add more bbq & coat pork. i only put sauce about 1/2 way up pork did not have to cover. COOK LOW 10-12 hrs. I am cooking as we speak & it spells & looks mouth watering good!!! I'll have 4-5oz myself. my family will have pulled pork sandwiches w/ the extra bbq sauce. I may have bread too.
  12. Janey I love you but is there really such a thing as a size 3? I went from girls 12 to Ladies 12 at 10 years old and never seen a size 3 in my life. This made me laugh. I will never see a size 3 before I die...... Thanks for making my day, no offense honey, sincerely!!!! Linda

    Eating Before The Surgery

My surgery date is March 19 too!! I have spent this last week before my week long liquid diet systematically eating all those things that I know I will miss. We have so far done big time Italian, Mexican, Chinese, and all the desserts that I know will be replaced with healthier choices. I am trying really hard to not use the words NEVER AGAIN because it will freak me out. I wont lie, it is very anxiety provoking to know that I cant use food as my emotional medication after this. And I do love food. It is a pleasure in life. But I am looking forward to learning a new way to be passionate about food without sacrificing my body and health for it.

    18 month check in

Lori, You are to be commended for all your successes and hard work. 125 pounds is amazing. Tell us all what worked best for you and what were your challenges? I'm struggling somewhat with that last 40 pounds. I slacked off for many months and have been on a plateau but I'm working harder now. I absolutely feel that the band has been successful for me. I know from years of trying to lose weight and knowing that all I've accomplished is to gain 10 pounds each year, that the band has been the best investment in myself that I have ever done. I'm not done losing yet, but if I only lost the 56 pounds that I've lost, that is still pretty wonderful for me. I feel physically stronger, have way more energy, and I feel much more happy...go figure!
  15. Patrick, 1-2 lbs is right where you want to be. It's not healthy to drop weight left and right as it causes kidney issues. As stated by others... chill out dude! My doc's got me out of work for 2 weeks, nothing over 10 lbs for 4 weeks and no bowling for 5 weeks! You **NEED** to let your body heal. You had things punched through those muscles, parts were cut and moved. The fact that you dropped 21 in the first week should be viewed as a gift not the norm! Take it easy and let your body heal. THEN worry about your food consumption. THEN worry about how much you should work out and how hard. When exactly where you banded?

    Running pashion

What are your favorite aspects of running? For me, I enjoy: 1. The heat that radiates from core and chest after about 10 minutes. Like sitting in a Sauna. 2. How good my body feels after training. After glow usually lasts about 2 hours for me. 3. Some aches and pains get fixed, especially in my back. This happens if I am relaxed in bother upper and lower body when running, but keeping a strong core and arms at side, as if on rails. It is like a massage and hardly feels like running. Nothing kills a run faster (distracting) than tight traps or tight calves/quads. 4. Breaking a new 5 k or 10 k personal time. 5. Get to listen to my running tunes pumping! Running is a really good form of cardio that doesn't tax the nervous system too much and cause mental burnout. It is fairly easy to do and not complex, but burns a lot of calories (average 100-200 every 10 min depending on intensity). How do you like to train for your running? For me, there are several ways that I like to train on my running days (non strength days, 3-4 days a week): 1. 5 k or 10 k for time. Ran a 45 min 10 k last night and kept my hr between 148 and 152. I typically do not run for more than an hour because of training pace. 2. Tiered sprints. I like to do 6.5 for a min, 7.5 for a min and 8.5 for a min, rinse, repeat until tired. I typically can do this for between 20-30 min. Hr between 140-160. 3. Sprinting on level - 30 s @ 12.5 mph, rest 30 s, repeat for 10 minutes. Hr > 160 (drop to 150 during rest). I like this training because it is uber effective and very short. 4. Sprinting on incline - 30 s @ 9.5 mph on 6%, rest 30, repeat for 10 m. Hr > 160. I like this training because it is uber effective and very short. 5. Max vo2 training - 1 min max @ 160 hr, 3 rounds of 5 min @ 80%, 6 rounds of 3 min @ 100% / 1 min rest, rest 2 min, 5 rounds of 2 min @ 100% / 1 min rest. This is a hard running workout for me to complete without running out of steam.50% of the time I have struggled to finish last segment. Massive caloric burn on this one. And because it is such a shock on the muscles, it continues the gift of burning calories for a long time. Typically before running, I will do a 10 min 6 mph warmup jog and then 5 min dynamic stretches. Typically after running, I will do 20 - 30 min of elliptical at moderate intensity (135-145 hr) and then 10 min stretching. Please share info about your running passion.

Sleeved 10 Days Ago. Only Down 3 Lbs

The first week I was so frustrated because I was in the hospital 2 nights and came home to weigh myself and I had GAINED 10 pounds! I realized later that much of it was swelling from the surgery. I didn't start losing any weight until about 9 days post-op. I'm sure it's different for everyone. Don't worry! It's still very early. You'll see the scale move, almost before your very eyes! lol

    My Surgery Date

Use vanilla bean for vanilla shake. It's trial & error on amount, use little at time, blend for 10-12 seconds. I would also invest in a good blender, I bought NutriBullet. It's great & you will use after your surgery as well. You can also add orange extract to vanilla. For the choc I added 1 tablespoon of plain dark cocoa, & tablespoon of sugar free instant choc pudding. Experiment with different extracts, I bought them all. Good luck!

    Discouraged...

The less you have to lose, the slower it gets. But 10-12 lbs in 2 months is within the average range of 1-2lbs a week and is not slow.
  22. I am scheduled for Lap Band Surgery on January 8, 2008. I'm starting to get VERY nervous. Since my first appointment with my Dr. (10/29), I've lost 20 pounds. I weigh 237 pounds. My goal is 165 pounds. Howard

I live in Louisville...I am a size 8/10 now but still have several large pieces...though I gave away the majority to the Goodwill on Broadway.

    Pre-op diet

Great job! It's best to have a head start before the pre-op hits you like a freight train! I have been on liquids for 11 days now and my surgery is this Friday 12/14 at 10:30! Now it's just liquid in- liquid out, but I feel so good!
  25. I REALLY like the responses from heartfire..CLASSIC! The bottom line for me is, NOBODY on this EARTH (except for my new life friends here on LPT) knows what I'm going through, what I've gone through, or what lies ahead for me. ONLY I know that. While some may be well meaning, I honestly just reply that this is a personal decision I made for many reasons that I don't need to discuss. I am SOOOOO happy with my band I cannot tell you. I was SO much like you in so many ways it's scary! I was 255, lost down to 163 (I'm 5'6 so 163 looks very good on me :rolleyes2:). Then people would see my "before" pics and say, OMG, that looks nothing like you (and it truly didn't). However, once I gained all that weight back + 10 (thank you to my 2 wonderful boys and overindulgent husband, and yeah, ok, I was lazy and ate like crap too :scared2:) no one said anything. They almost "helped" me live in my fantasy world of, "I still look good" (which trust me, I did not!). Suffice it to say that the people in our life we consider friends and even our family cannot possibly know what we've done and why. So I politely, yet firmly, ask them not to comment. Or if they do, I tell them why I found that remark offensive and it has opened more than an eye or two. Live by my motto..."Do what's best for you and screw the rest" :scared2:
