Interesting topic and responses Alex. I actually don't have an issue with restaurants where you know you are eating waaayy too many calories. What bothers me is when you think you are ordering healthy and come to find out that you may not be. People are getting smarter about asking for dressing and sauces on the side as they know many are calorie laden but I recall early on in my weight loss journey and thinking if I ordered crab legs at Red Lobster, I'd be fine. When I went online to check the menu, I saw to my surprise that the sodium count for that meal was in excess of 1800 grams. I've no idea why it's so high but had I eaten those crab legs, I'd have gained Water weight for sure and would have presumed a weight gain for some unknown reason which would have been very frustrating. I know a great number of people rely on chain restaurants and they are the worst offenders as the above poster noted about the meal at Cheesecake Factory. Am glad that I live in a city where there are so many restaurant options that don't include the chains. One of my go to type of foods is Greek/Mediterranean/Middle Eastern. The fish especially is usually very fresh and simply grilled. Plus they have an awful lot of non-meat items to choose from. Ever have the lemon artichokes? Yum.

I'm going through process right now with Aetna HMO. It's a 3-4 month waiting period. From what I've been told and been reading on there website is you have to meet certain criteria, such as certain bmi or hypertension. The website explains it all. You cannot gain weight at your final weigh in. So whatever you weight was on first weigh in, don't show a weight gain on last one before doctor submits all paperwork to insurance for approval.

For three years now I've had a lot of trouble with both my knees. I'd been told numerous times that because of my weight my knees were both, bone on bone and I had osteoarthritis. Long story short, double knee replacement surgery was in my future. Since my surgery in January I've done very little exercise, due to the lack of flexibility and intense pain. I finally got into a pain management center and was ready to get my first Synvisc injection when the dr looked at my ex rays and told me I had the knees of a 20 year old. I don't have osteoarthritis at all, I have water on the knee and a lot of it. A knee in good condition should only hold 5 cc's of fluid. The dr removed 15 cc's of fluid and then injected the Synvisc. I felt instant relief, the pressure was almost non existent without all the fluid and the pain is minimal now. I can't believe it took this long to find this out. All those years of massive amounts of steroids for my asthma caused my major weight gain and this accumulation of fluid on my knees. At least now I can start exercising without fear of damaging my knees further.

Natural Fullness vs. Learned Fullness
FloraBama Girl replied to BaileyBariatrics's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
Thanks for that share. I was a normal weight child before I started school. My first grade teacher would not let me leave the lunchroom until I finished my food. She would leave me alone sometimes until the bell rang to go home. I didn't know how to tell my mother and started gaining weight to not get left in the lunchroom. I gained 30 pounds that year and that is a lot for a little kid. I remained the biggest kid in the class until after the sixth grade. I got my beloved horse and she helped me slim down. It was after my dad died in 1992 that my weight problems started again. I was the apple of his eye and it devastated me. In August 2011 I had gastric sleeve surgery. I started at 269 and had lost to 185 in August 2012. I was out of work from January 2012 to August. I think going back to work that August contributed to my current weight of 220. I have been out of work again since the end of December and can't get this weight off no matter what I do. I am starting back to work this Monday July 13 and I am terrified this is going to cause more weight gain. I have done nothing but Protein and a couple of cantaloupe slices this week and lost 3 pounds. My injuries from a car accident and chronic anemia (it is genetic, not Iron low) prevents me exercising enough to help add muscle and burn some fat. Sorry I got off topic but I needed to rant. -
The shot does cause weight gain... i truly believe that's what started my biggest weight issues as a teen.

When I lost 100 lbs after my first pregnancy, I definitely noticed strangers being more willing to strike up conversation with me, hold doors, ask if I needed help, etc. At my lowest weight, in a 0 dress size, I also remember trying so hard to talk with other moms at dance class and being completely shunned. I've never had trouble making friends, so it was confusing to me...until one mom told me a couple years later that she had secretly hated me for always looking so cute LOL. Then, as I rapidly regained weight with my second pregnancy, I noticed my invisibility to strangers returning and other moms no longer hated me. Having been on both sides, I can understand how it must be hard to watch another woman accomplish what you want so desperately for yourself. When I had the band and my friend had the sleeve, it was pretty depressing to see her melt away, while I struggled with pain and further weight gain. I'm not sure how it will be this time. I've only told my 3 best friends what I am doing and don't plan on seeing anyone for over a month, when my kids start school again.

Gaining weight at year 3 post VSG, HELP????
Camella replied to mlfontan's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm so sorry that you have had so many health issues and complications. I am 2 years out and recently gained 15 lb and I went to the doctor and found out that I had several hormonal imbalances and PCOS. Perhaps a visit to see an endocrinologist for a full hormone evaluation would be a good idea and make sure your thyroid is functioning properly. These things can easily cause weight gain. Also it sounds like the RNY is the way to go, the quality of your health and life are the most important things to be focusing on! 7 years out. what do you do?
James Marusek replied to diva83's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am 2 years post-op from RNY and my weight is flat-lined. As a matter of fact I weighed myself this morning and I am at my lowest weight thus far. So what am I doing. First, I am not hypersensitive about my weight loss. I weigh myself each morning but I use the scale only as a tool, not something to beat myself over the head with. It only tells me if I am making the wrong decisions on my experimentation with food. Second, I am getting most of my Protein from meals. I consume high protein meals and do not take protein supplements any longer. Third, I strictly stay away from processed sugars. I use low calorie sweeteners (such as Stevia), no calorie artificial sweeteners (such as Splenda), natural sugars (found in fruits and milk) and sugar alcohols. I had diabetes prior to surgery and have been in remission since the surgery and periodically monitor my blood sugar levels. And the testing shows this approach works. Fourth, I consume fats. Fats have the power to take away hunger. So generally, I am rarely hungry. Generally, I have a cup of coffee in the morning with a giant scoop of home made whip cream. I make it myself and use Splenda in place of sugar. I use whole milk and real butter. I might have 3 Adkins treats during the day which also have fats and no processed sugar. They take the edge away from hunger. I asked my nutritionist "Why do people have surgery only to gain some or all of their weight back over the years?" Her response was "grazing" which is probably synonymous with snacking. I will be the first to admit that I snack, but I think it is important to understand what is appropriate to snack on. I snack on protein and fats and exclude processed sugar. Fifth, I do not drink carbonated beverages anymore. I believe it is the carbonation that causes weight gain. It is like generating miniature explosions in my stomach that over time expand it out and allow it to grow and as a result, I gain weight. Six, I am aware of the conditions that cause me to loose additional weight and will sometimes take advantage of these conditions to capture and achieve additional long term weight loss. These fall into two categories. I have found that when I get the stomach flu, I will lose weight. I have also found that when I travel and am forced to eat out, I generally lose weight. -
I've had a fusion that failed. Also 4 others that have failed. A crushed sciatica too. Leg pain and on a cane. But since I started this, I have a new outlook. After my exercise class I've decided to start them now and it's helping me physically. Failed back surgeries is what has caused my weight gain, but not gonna let it anymore. I do get epidural injection every 6 months in rounds of 3. They aren't a fix, but a little help. Getting Facet's on wed's. Had them after one of my surgeries and they helped before

Weight is a touchy subject, and women are complicated creatures. I know none of us would take kindly to anyone commenting on our weight when we're gaining it, and I feel like a lot of people also think that way about commenting on someone losing it. I had my surgery one day after you, and have lost right about the same amount as you, I think...from 213 down to 124. There's a huge difference in my appearance, yet almost no one acknowledges it. I am actually grateful for it. Even though I know that I look much better, if someone were to say that to me, I am pretty sure my crazy brain would go into overdrive with thoughts of "gosh, did I really look so bad before?" Yep, I think comments about weight - gain or loss - are best left unsaid. Except, of course, on here... Elode, you look fantastic!!!

No Wonder I Wasn’t Skinny!
robinsmj replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I grew up in the late 80's- 90's. My mother cooked all of our meals. I really didn't start eating out until I was an adult. Breakfast would be oatmeal on school days, and grits, eggs, bacon, pancakes or french toast on the weekends. We ate lunch at school, and weekends we would have a sandwich or a lunchable with a juice box. Dinner was collard greens or pinto beans, cornbread, fried chicken, fried fish, or pot roast and we literally had cornbread and sweet potatoes every night. We didn't drink soda, and not too much milk only at school. I am the only one in my family that ended up overweight. My mom has been 115 lbs all her life even after having 5 kids, and still eating the same things she cooked for us as children. My sister is the same after having 4 kids. My first husband was killed in 2008 and I started gaining weight after that. Then I remarried in 2011 and started fertility drugs, and had 3 pregnancies (1 living child). I attribute my weight gain to fast food, depression meds, fertility drugs, and pregnancies. Oddly I was fine eating my mother's food. -
Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?
NoMoBand replied to Tazwella's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Judyd, I think what you are asking is after your band was removed 3 years ago and your upcoming sleeve surgery, will you still have slow weight loss with the sleeve or is the slow weight loss because you get both surgeries done at the same time or closer to each other. A very good question. The little I've read and understand is that a WL surgery patient's metabolism changes in time, thus, weight loss slows down. Because you had this time gap between surgeries and have also gained weight you may be a normal weight loss candidate as if you were getting WL surgery for the first time and I say this because your metabolism again has changed since the band was removal and the weight gain. Now, I'm just completely guessing this and am now curious. Please, anyone out there correct me or does anyone have the correct information on this. I'm super curious now. jake -
Banded in 2006.......Starting over.. Need support
ardeornellis posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My name is Amy. I was Renewed Hope on the old lapbandtalk forum... I was banded in 2oo6. I was VERY dedicated to my weight loss journey and lost 85 pounds in the first year. I felt alive!! I trained for and ran a half marathon in 2011.. I kept this 85 pounds off for over 7 years, and then the weight started to creep back up. I haven't had saline in my band in over 2 years. At first the weight gain was very slow, but in the last 6 months I have gained 50 POUNDS!!! I am now back to my original weight and so discouraged. I have an appointment next week to begin this lap band journey again... I need support... I need accountability... I need suggestions.. Do I need to do anything to prepare for my first visit?? What's the best plan after my first fill???? -
post-op 1+ years - stretching out pouch?
Djmohr replied to drmeow's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
This is a great question! There are a ton of studies that were done on line that can help you answer by googling it. I have done this multiple times and have learned that although your pouch capacity changes in the first two years allowing some additional room, it is really not about stretching as much as it is about your body and brain learning to tolerate more. In one study I read that the average pouch size after 2 years should hold about 6 ounces at one time but they had seen pouches as large as 9 to 10 ounces. The interesting thing is regardless of the pouch being 6 ounces or 10 ounces, when the appropriate food plan is following they did not see any difference in weight gain. This really is all about putting the right thing in your body and learning about when you are actually full. I suspect your friend from work is both not following the eating plan nor is he/she probably taking their supplements which are required for the rest of their life to remain healthy. I am only 9 months post op so I have not yet hit maintenance but I am definately able to eat more that I was able at 4 months. That is why it is so important to make sure what is on your plate is good quality Protein and good carbs on a regular basis. You would not find a 6 inch subway sub on my plate mostly because of the heavy bread. I simply could not tolerate it. However the insides of that sub might work for me. I have also been taught by my nut that when eating you have to think of your food capacity post chewing. In other words, you will be able to eat a lot more than 6 ounces of salad once that salad has been chewed up. niw if I was eating chicken or steak, I will be lucky to get 3 ounces in, because it is so dense. I use the 2 bites of protein for every 1 bite of good carbs until I feel full. It takes the brain 20 minutes to catch up with your stomach. This is why the requirement to eat so slowly yet not go past 30 minutes. Your pouch likely starts emptying at the 30 minute mark which would give you capacity to over eat. Google your question, there is a ton of info on this topic. -

Getting Back To The "Green Zone" After Complete Unfill?
parisshel replied to maygoddess's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
This is a thread that should be read by band doctors (if there any out there that are still putting in bands!). Like the OP, I'm convinced that once an unfill is performed, it is unlikely that a refill back to the same level of original fill will provide the bandster with the same, good level of restriction and feeling of satiety. My sense is that you have to go up and over the original fill level to find, if it is even possible, the green zone again. So many on this board never find a sustainable green zone again after an unfill. What all pre ops should know, and what all banding surgeons should tell them, is to take the utmost care of their bands, working them to the max in the first year of banding. That's where we all see the most weight loss...motivation is at its highest, and the band and the banded area is pristine. Barring a surgery screw-up or medical issue, no unfills should have to happen in the first year if the patient is compliant with the post op way of eating. There are a couple of well-known bandster bloggers who just had unfills followed by refills and are now struggling with weight gain (small, but gains nonetheless). Anyone read Chronicles from Bandland or Lapband Gal? Both are star bloggers, longtime bandsters with perfect track records for compliance. Both lost massive amounts of weight and got to goal in their first year. Now, five years out (more or less) both have had issues and have had to get slight unfills. LBG got refilled but her weight is up a bit, and CfB has gained a bit and can't get it off, even with restricted calories and lots of sport. The minute the band gets tinkered with, weight will seek to return...even if we are eating the same amount of calories as before. It's an area that really should be studied but of course won't be because you can't control the study unless you lock up the patients and control their caloric intake. But damn I wish a medical team would look at this and figure out why it happens! And then find a way to stop it from happening! -
@@capricec if your extra large on top because of weight gain, yeah your gonna deflate a bit. If your breast tissue is your breast tissue then not so much. I have also gone from a 42DD to a 38DD but the breast tissue is pretty much the same, not much of a deflate in them other than that paunch that I had above them at the clavicle line. I can now see my collar bone One really good tip that I was given as I started my pre-op, post op and even today I still put this into practice. Support!!! Get it and use it. If you are at the gym you want a really good supportive sports bra to hold those babies in place. The more they hang the more you rip the muscle and Fiber that keep them up and they will sag. So when I am at the gym I make sure to have a great sports bra on, and when I am home working around the house I will have a good supportive bra, sports or other wise on. This was a tip from my breast specialist, even before I started considering WLS, just for breast health in general.

Aetna...What did you do to get approved?
gigito2 replied to dede0314's topic in Insurance & Financing
I have a question about this: is this a 1 pound weight gain over-all; or any 1# weight gain at any time during the trial? In other words, say I started at 100# and ended up at 99#, but during 1 month I went up to 101# - would this be a disqualifier? Or is the net loss at 99# the magic number? Hope I have made myself clear.... I finished the three month supervised diet, unfortunately I gained one pound. Would this little gain get me denied ? -
Hi all, I'm a newbie... to the forum, not the situation. I had my surgery early 1996, dropped about 75 lbs initially, rebounded back about +10 lbs, and stayed there for about 12 years. Then all hell broke loose. I had an eye infection that sequestered me to a blackened room, in extreme pain for nearly a month... That's when my metabolism ceased to exsist it seems. I was in bed, not moving, so not burning calories, not burning calories, so had no energy or appetite, no appetite so not consuming any calories for energy ... etc etc, you get the picture. Since then, I have been steadily gaining weight (and also crested the dreaded 40 year-old mark). I've put on about 40 pounds and can't seem to shake it. I'm really not sure I know how to be honest. My surgery dropped the weight 'for me' I guess. I eat very little (my kids even mention it), and still hang on to the weight. I feel like the surgery hyjacked my metabolism to begin with... like my body adjusted to surviving on its surgery-given food allotment... then with the illness and age on top of it, it feels hopeless. Any suggestions?

So I'm 5 days away from my 8 month anniversary of VSG surgery and finally admitting that my old habits and obsession with snacking have not miraculously disappeared because of WLS. On May 28th, I had lost 60 pounds and was so positive that I'd reach goal by my 8 month anniversary. But rather than stay focused, eat healthy and follow the plan, I got over confident and reverted back to snacking on all the high carb, high sugar, high salt comfort foods that had originally caused my weight gain. I stopped going to my monthly support group meetings, stopped my daily involvement in on-line bariatric and weight loss support groups and as a result, I've gained 8 pounds rather than losing the last 6 pounds that would have gotten me to goal. I know what I have to do to get back on track. Any suggestions on how to break my addition to carbs? I'm focused on Protein today with the hope that once I break the carb cycle, I can get back to making better food choices for my late night Snacks. Yes, the honeymoon is over!!
