    Food ideas

I was an avid home cook and baker before surgery and am happy to announce I still am after. There's plenty of things we can cook and eat post op still once you're back to eating regular foods. I do protein pasta with a protein of some kind, I did almond flour crust Pizzas, I've done veggie bowls, omelets, burrito bowls, bariatric friendly cake and brownies, broccoli cheddar soup. My fave right now is a bariatric friendly Cobb bowl since I can't eat raw leafy vegetables yet. It has baked peppers and kale, wild rice, avocado, red onion, cherry tomatoes, cheese, boiled egg, olives, vegetarian bacon and a dijon lemon garlic vegan dressing I make. Here's a pic of it. One bowl has about 22 grams of protein, good amount of fiber too. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. I wonder if it is a 3 month thing Miss Erika, I am approaching my 3 month date and I am really not wanting protein in meat form either. I am by nature a vegetarian, hating beef, the way it taste. I want to throw up,Thank goodness for Vegiburgers. Nuts scare me, one nut leads to many nuts, I am afraid nuts are a trigger food for binge. In the mean time, until the protein aversion goes away, I will be having a nutitious greek yogurt. Yum Yum

    Constantly Choking On Food

Thanks, Laura. Yes, the feeling is in between my breasts. It starts hurting and I feel a big pressure in my chest. It always precedes a PB/slime. My real concern is that since I am having this problem so often I wonder whether I should get another fill. Feeling like I am only eating about 25% less than one I ate pre-surgery is a bummer...yet the PBing has prevented me from getting another fill up until this point. I am wondering if I should just get another fill and completely give up on the foods that give me problems all together. I have the most problems with poultry, meat, and pork - all Proteins. If I eliminate those items I feel like I would be sustaining myself on fish and Pasta (two things that don't seem to give me problems.) I did not expect to have to become a vegetarian from having the band! UGGG! :tt1: I put a call into the person who coordinates my fills and she said that a lot of people have issues with certain types of foods but "thinks it is unfortunate that I seem to be having problems with so many of them." Considering I have only lost 30 pounds and was a self pay I am pretty upset at this point - that equates to $317 a pound!

Hey Guys! I am happy to report I am 7 days post op and starting to feel a lot better! I am so happy that I am feeling better. Thanks for being so sweet. I had a long week, actually! I am supposed to start soft foods today :smile2: My DB and I are going out tonight to Taco Bell for vegetarian refried beans, yum! lol Anne, that date is coming up QUICK how exciting!!! Yes just focus on my team beating others (woot woot) I won't say who it is though  Veejay, we were banded on the same day, how are you feeling? Karen - do you mind me asking your BMI? 23 pounds is amazing, how long was your preop diet? My doctor only requires a 24 hour one so I didn't lose squat before surgery, but that's ok! Every doctor is different and I'm not even going to WORRY about it until my first fill so I can put all my positive energy toward healing. Penny, what's fitday and extrapunds? I hope everyone has a great weekend! Monday i'll be back to bug everyone about what kind of pureed meat I should be eating *puke*!
  8. Have a look at Dr Matthew Weiner’s Pound of Cure book & his you tube videos. He’s a bariatric surgeon who supports a low animal protein diet. It may not be anything all that new but may make you more comfortable about how to manage your weight loss post surgery. A good dietician should help you devise a way of eating that is best for you, your health requirements & your eating preferences. The biggest ficus post surgery is your prirein intake (& fluids) but I’ve never heard anyone say they were restricted to getting their protein only from animal sources. Plenty of plant based protein shakes & powders, yoghurts, milk, etc. as you know you can eat to meet the goals you’ll be given. Initially after the surgery you will be on a staged return to eating diet. This is support your healing tummy & not put undue stress on your digestive system. There are some foods we’re not advised to eat during this period. But again a good dietician should be able to advise you of alternatives. Mind you many have refried beans on their list of recommended foods during the staged return to eating stages. While I was on keto for my pre surgery diet, I was not encouraged to follow it long term by my dietician: good for kickstarting a diet but not long term she advised. I had my own doubts about it so I was glad. Many of us use the weight loss stage to devise a way of eating that best suits our needs & preferences & don’t follow any specific ‘diet’. I mean if there was a diet that worked for everyone none of us would have been obese & needed surgery. Personally I’m a low fat, low carb (2 serves of whole/multigrain carbs a day), low sugar & high protein (absorption issue). Many vegetarians successfully have surgery so your eating preferences should not be a deterrent to you either once you find a supportive surgeon & dietician.
  9. I can say for myself this was part of a journey. I know that sounds trite, but it really was. I've been a long time vegetarian, but I can honestly say at least 10 of those years I really should have considered myself a junk-a-tarian. I didn't eat meat or seafood, but I wasn't eating healthy. Part of what made me decide to have this surgery was seeing the changes that cleaning up my diet did for me. Cutting back on fast foods, processed foods and sodas made major changes in how I felt and my health. However the damage was done. I was morbidly obese with chronic ongoing health issues. This surgery was just as much a tool as deciding to cook from scratch and go to the gym regularly was.

Approved - but Should I Go through with it?

@@wwboy As far as people being miserable post surgery, most of them were miserable before surgery. They thought the weight was their problem, not other things. Bad life choices, traumatic childhood, bad life partners, lack of assertiveness, social anxiety, etc. Losing weight won't fix that and when people lose the weight and they are emotionally in the same place or worse, it really goes down hill. I know a lot of people that had surgery and are still miserable but they are just miserable people, fat or skinny. If you love yourself and you are happy with yourself, but you need to lose some excess weight to make life easier then do it. Most vegetarians and vegans I know are fat. They are sugar addicts and they pile on a lot of crap. It is really easy to be over weight on a plant based diet. You can just binge on fruit and you will be just as fat as if you are were eat double cheese burgers. If moderation is your issue, then surgery will help you with the moderation. The ability to eat very little and feel satisfied and full is a feel of euphoria that is hard to describe. You can have the sleeve and still have a plant based diet, people here do it, it is done. Your counselor doesn't have to live in your skin, and deal with you life. So keep that in mind when taking advice from her or anyone else (including me) you have to live with you.
  11. There are so many pre-op regimens out there. My surgeon only required that I eat very low fat and vegetarian for two weeks prior. My BMI was at 40. Oh, and nothing to eat or drink after midnight before surgery, of course! But if I were you I would do whatever I could to optimize the surgery. You'll never regret doing the pre-op diet.
  12. So i asked around on this topic. I eat meat but I don't enjoy it. One of the great suggestions I got was to make your soup, and then when it's cold, mix in some unflavored Protein powder. Then when you re-heat, do so very slowly so it doesn't clump. I'm looking forward to trying that. In a thread I started about Vegetarian sleevers, I posted a pic of an example vegetarian day where I think you could get 80+ gms of protein from vegetarian food. Would love to see some of yours suggestions in that thread as well. But it's soft/solid foods, not on liquids where you and I both seem to be. I also reached out to another vet sleever and she sent me some good suggestions, which I will share with you via PM. Grass eaters, unite!

    15 DAYS POSTOP FOLLOWUP

I do have unflavored protein, so I plan to add that to any cream soup I may have. I am a vegetarian so in addition to being unable to tolerate sweets, I am unable to tolerate anything with an animal flavor so the chicken soup is out. I flew over to the site to order the cheese sauce because that is something I would eat absolutely and it's out of season and out of stock. I am so desperate that I emailed them begging for the opportunity to purchase it now because I simply can not wait until October! Thanks for your suggestions! Sent from my iPhone using VST
  14. I just got called yesterday with my official approval - and surgery date for December. I'm completely confused. I'm at 39 Bmi and 34 years old. I just have this nagging fear about regrets in the long term. I'm scared of not losing much weight -- of not keeping it off... I'm part of a church tradition that advocates a vegetarian or vegan diet. I've never done it. But I know that there's lots of research indicating that plant based diets are the most healthy -- disease fighting even. I'm afraid of ending up not getting healthy through this surgery and then finding that the plant based diet thing was my real solution. I'd hate that regret. I'm worried about where I'll be in 15 or 20 years. I'm scared of complications or regrets. I'm scared the research will turn and that this decision will eventually come to be known as a foolish one. My wife is super supportive and is crystal clear that I should go through with it. I'm fully conflicted. Did anyone have these kinds of mixed emotions? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I don't understand (goal weight rant)

I think you would have to ask the OP if this thread was inspired by you, because I don't know. I know that MY part in this thread has been inspired by all the mean spirited people who have taken great pains to tell me I am skinny, anorexic, ugly and nasty. And I am not sure what the point in posting the content of that thread was. My point there, as it is here is, as much as people don't like being called fat, I don't like being called skinny, and scrawny. And let me tell you, when you pick my weight, or dress size, and say that at your height (which is the same as mine) you would look scrawny and skinny, it tends to give the impression that you are talking about me. I am sorry that if by saying whatever I am you think I am saying that you are falling short (I have no idea what I did to give the impression I think that by not being super skinny people are falling short, I never actually used that expression till just now...) See, I have no freaking idea where you get the idea that I think I have to be super skinny. Just because my weight is not one you could imagine on yourself, doesn't mean that I am unhealthy. And that is what pissed me off. The fact that it is just assumed that if someone is under a particular weight, that they are at deaths door. It's not the case. I just came in from an 8km run, am eating a huge bowl of oats, and have a banana to eat after that. I eat, probably more than a lot of bandsters around here, and if I was as sickly as my weight is portrayed to be by some people, I would be hooked up to an IV, not out running, and about to eat more than some people do in a day!! I eat the way I do (vegetarian and organic) because I feel almost super human when I do. I exercise the way I do, because it adds to the way I feel. I am alive. I feel better than most people could ever imagine, and the way I look, is just a very nice side effect. The way I eat and exercise is not driven by a need to be skinny, its driven by a need to be healthy. And I hate having to explain myself.

    My revelation

I think there's something to be said for trying new cooking methods and new flavors, especially those from a different sorts of cuisines. It can put old ingredients into a new light. For example, I was vegan for a long time* (right now I'm vegetarian, and when I hit goal, I'd like to cut eggs and dairy back out, but we'll see). Before I became vegan, there were sooo many things I didn't like. It's not that vegans are so limited in what they can eat (it's way less limiting than people think), but it terms of the Standard American Diet, yes, it can be a bit limited. So I started trying things I never would have imagined (quinoa, peppers), and started trying things I thought I hadn't liked (like tofu, lentils and mushrooms) in different recipes. For starters, I had some really good cookbooks that helped. Looking at vegan food blogs helped a lot too. I just learned a lot about flavors and textures I'd never considered before. And the funny thing is, I a much wider variety of foods now than I ever did when I still ate meat. It forced me to be creative. So if you decide you want to learn to like, for example, lentils, I'd spend some time looking at different lentil recipes, and then trying different kinds of lentils (seriously, there are so many!). You might find you don't like lentils when they're more firm, but that you like them when they're cooked so much they sort of dissolve into a puree. Or maybe you'd like them when they're in a patty with a yogurt/mint sauce or something. The only way to find out is experiment with new recipes. Consider it an adventure! *Not why I was/am overweight, just for the record. Much more to do with lack of exercise and inability to control portions than because the food I was eating was unhealthy.
  17. I'm glad you asked this question. I'm having the same problem. I had my 4th fill almost a month ago. I have been hungry but can only eat a tablespoon of baked Beans or soft foods at a time. I get that 'feeling' too. After that 'feeling' passes I'm still very hungry and eat another tablespoon or two. I think this way of eating isn't right. I should be able to eat a cup of food at my 1/2 hour sitting and be satisfied for a few hours, correct? What I'm doing is grazing, isn't it? Not good eating habits. Like you... soup easily goes down and satisfies me for a bit. This is what my normal day looks like: Isopure Protein shake in morning made with a couple tablespoons of plain low fat yogurt, ice, powdered milk, Water and a little flaxseed oil. mid morning: 8 ounces of homemade thin soup. Usually chicken broth with very well cooked chopped broccoli, onions, carrots, celery and brown rice.... with some low fat Velveeta melted into it for creaminess. lunch: a one ounce Louis Kemp single crab stick with finely minced celery and low fat mayo. Sometimes I can make tuna fish salad. later after lunch: 4 ounces of non fat, vegetarian baked beans dinner: two one ounce mashed meatballs with a little tomato gravy. Sometimes I can get some salmon or cod down... but just a little. dinner sometimes varies: I sometimes have mashed cauliflower or mashed potatoes. And then during the day I also have a scoop of unflavored Isopure zero carb Protein powder mixed into one cup of sugar free drink mix (like 4C iced tea... or Crystal Light). I don't like it much... but I want to make sure I get enough protein. Now and then I can get a low fat baked Triscuit down with some Laughing Cow Light cheese. Oh what a joy to give my teeth something to do! My teeth are lonely. I can't get chicken down... pork or ham comes back up. I'm not sure if my band is too tight or not. I see my doc this morning. I'll try to return to this thread to see if any 'veterans' can help with their own advice. I'm struggling here. Best of luck to you. It's not easy.. but we'll do this. :wink2:
  18. Kids are teens and I was vegan then vegetarian then flexible, I think they welcomed the break lol, we should meet up !!! (For some reason I can't tag anyone )

    I'm lost

Syntrax and Unjury protein powders are 100 calories, and 0 carb, 0 fat, and 0 sugar and 23 grams of protein. BUT...they are whey proteins. You'll really have to look at vegetarian options if you can't have whey.

    Going Vegan After Sleeve

I'm working on transitioning to vegetarianism first, but the end goal is full veganism. I don't want to consume anything that comes from an animal. Have you found any good vitamins/ supplements that are at least vegetarian? Anything you can recommend would be greatly appreciated!
  21. I started thin purees yesterday and feel much better! I've never felt actual hunger pangs, but starting the thin purees has helped that weak/low blood sugar/can't concentrate feeling (maybe a little bit of being on liquid only, maybe a little bit of ketosis). I had 1/3 cup of pureed oatmeal and no-added-sugar peaches cooked with soy milk and thinned out with almond milk and added 1 scoop of Protein powder this morning and I'm really full and satisfied. I love my VitaMix for this stage of the plan. My PA told me to think of thin purees as Soups and to decide what I wanted to combine. For lunch I think I will have thin pureed lentil Soup with vegetarian Morningstar patties and some low-fat soft cheese (maybe a little extra Protein Powder if needed). Maybe with a little thinned out Greek yogurt. The PA wants me to get all of my protein from food and to give up the Protein drinks completely. And to also eliminate protein powder in the solid foods. I'm not sure this is realistic as a vegetarian if I also need to keep carbs down. I asked her about keeping a Protein Drink as Breakfast only and she was insistent that I couldn't. I want to talk to the RD next week and get her take on it (PA isn't very informed about vegetarian diets). The PA also told me that I need to give up the 20 calories/pack diet hot chocolate that I've been drinking once or twice a day with protein powder (even if I made it with Water and no protein powder--they only allow drinks that are 10 calories or fewer for 8 ounces). She told me that one drink like that per day could result in 15 fewer pounds lost per year, but I figured it out and it's actually 2 lbs. Plus you could modulate something else to make up for it. Right now I am taking in all of my protein and fluids (60 grams or more and 72 ounces or more) and calories are very low. I want to be--and will be--compliant but feel a little overwhelmed right now. My RD is vegetarian and I think I will feel a lot better after I meet with her!
  22. One thing the PA told me to be careful about until at least a few months out is skin on something like a hot dog. I'm a vegetarian and she told me to even check for it on veggie dogs. Apparently it can get stuck in your staple line or cause other problems.

    August surgery buddies!

Anything ending in "itol" will send me straight to the bathroom. Those are sugar alcohols and have a laxative effect. Any other artificial sweeteners taste like metal to me but I can tolerate them if necessary. I won't eat jello, though, as it's not vegetarian.
  24. My pre op diet was lo fat, lo sugar, vegetarian diet. Incl no eggs or carbonated drinks. Plus 2 Protein shakes a day. My surgeon said the purpose of the pre op diet is to prevent people from having "last meals" the last couple weeks prior to surgery and to shrink the liver since it overlies the stomach, making surgery easier. After surgery I was on Clear liquids for 3 days then full liquids for five weeks (I have 2 weeks left) then you go to regular food. My doc took pics of my surgery, very cool. February 2019 weight loss buds

My surgiversary is tomorrow. Knowing me I'll forget to hop on lol. It's been a great year, but I'm definitely at a standstill. I am not sure what the next move is... I guess really really paying attention to my food and maybe now introducing some exercise. I'm leaning more towards being vegan from being vegetarian... I'm going to see how that goes dietwise. I feel that maybe going vegan will actually help me with my protein intake as it has to be more balanced in diet. Onwards and upwards! edit: It says my surgery date was 5th on the sidebar, but I'm pretty sure it was 4th. I need to double check now haha. edit again: nope - it WAS 5th Feb. ok, well I'm 2 days early.
