By this time next week, I will be in Mexico for my same day surgery. I am super excited and a bit nervous. I've gotten so much info from the forum in the past week, and so much support, I can honestly say I'm kind of ready! Waiting on my protein shakes and cute compression socks from UPS... they always deliver late in the day. Grrrrrr. I travel super light, all I expect to bring will fit in a backpack. And hopefully not bring too many souvenirs back home. Lol

Well guess what..First day of winter vacay and I am sick. I am hoping its not the flu because my bones feel like they hurt. My band is tight as a 10 year old virgin! (sorry, but I have wanted to say that for a long time!) I suppose that's good because I don't think I will be burning many calories today. Getting my butt from the bed to the easy chair to the bathroom isn't exactly aerobic. I subscribe to a newsletter from Hungrygirl http://hungrygirl.com. She is a super peppy non banded (I think) chronic dieter. I know that she is financially hooked in with some of the companies she reviews, but her reviews are pretty straight on. She reviews new diet food and has come up with some good ones before I have heard of them elsewhere. Some of her recent rave reviews have been on the light double churned ice creams-haven't tasted a bad one yet (100-120 cals). Quaker Mini Delights in caramel drizzle (90) flavor. These are fantastic! She is fanatical about Fiber One and uses it for breadcrumbs in the recipies she adapts to make them low cal. She is also nuts about tofu shiratake noodles. While I suppose they don't taste too bad after cooking, when you open them they smell like old seafood. I just can't get past it. My new fave is using ranch dressing for a dipping sauce for anything savory. It packs a taste punch with just a bit. It also helps to "lubricate" food for us bandsters. Anyway-I got on this Hungrygirl topic because I ordered a case of Vitatops (muffin tops) http://vitalicious.com at a decent price through her website. They are really expensive, but I got 30 for $29. They have 5-6 grams of fiber and about 100 cals each and are enriched with vitamins. I know some people with bread issues might not like these, but they are delicious if you can tolerate this sort of thing. I had the peanut butter fudge for breakfast this am. So back to moping around garnering sympathy from my DH and DS. Trystelle

Went for a walk today in the most bizarre weather. It was so foggy and you could feel the temperatures change as you went from one area to another. Even though it was one in the afternoon, I wished I had brought a light because it was so foggy. I miss walking outside so much I could cry. I am sucking up every shred of evidence that Spring is coming. Easter stuff in the stores. Local pancake house opening soon. 57 degrees today. Lots of potholes. I have been too hungry lately so I scheduled a fill for 2/28. Since I am a teacher and this is my vacation week I will call to see if there are any last minute cancellations. My restriction is great until 5 in the evening. Then the gates of hell open and temptation begans. I still love food! Lot's of banders say they lose interest-you know eat to live, but I still love food. Tomorrow the inevitable grocery shopping-What shall we buy. kashi golean, whipped fat free, sugar free cream, bananas, laughing cow cheese. V8, some south beach protein bars, 60 calorie pudding cups. I still have lots of other food. I throw out a lot of food because I can't eat it all before it spoils. I never think to freeze stuff. What a wasteroo!!

Does drinking water make you hungry?
SueAZ replied to LookingForMe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ususal down the entire bottle of water after about a hour. Can't figure out why but I do. I will after about an hour down another bottle. I don't drink much in the morning but afternoon and evening I down quite a bit. Have you tried Kelloggs Protein water? I found that it kind of gives you a full feeling. My RN I see for fills said that water anytime before you eat is okay because the water should flow through the band and should not hold in the pouch. -

So should I cut out 1 protein shake a day for a few days? -
I have been waiting for this day. Approval from my insurance company. When I picked up the phone and it was Dr. Srikanth's patient coordinator on the other end, I suddenly got nervous. She said 3 words You are approved. I jumped up and down like I won the lottery. I couldn't stop smiling. I called a few friends and shared the fantastic news. I am doing this for me and doing this so I can live a long and productive life. I want to do athletic things with my children and not let my genetic make-up and food continue to rule my life. I've been going through all the steps necessary to get my insurance to pay for the lapband procedure. I had to do 3 month supervised diet with a doctor and a nutritionist. I have learned a lot from the nutritionist and plan to use her as a resource the rest of my life. I've done all my labs and testing. Somehow I was so scared that I would not get approved. Now that I am, it's exciting but scary at the same time. I am going to change everything about my lifestyle. I have to. It's the only way to be successful. Failure is not an option for me...and that is what I am most scared of. I am not going this far to fail. I have to many hopes and dreams. All of them which require the body and health to do it. This is the first day of the rest of my life. :frown:

The end of the beginning of this amazing journey happened this morning, as I hit my goal weight of 235. It's been on my bucket list for so long that it just didn't seem possible. Well, I did it, thanks in part to the support of all of you on this board. So, my dietician has pointed out that my BMI is still in the "overweight" category, and will be until I get to 215. I'm 6-foot-6...the notion of getting to 215 is just foreign to me. I genuinely don't think I want to get that low. So, we spoke yesterday and I decided I'm going to shoot for 225 now, and use that as my stabilization point. Thoughts on that from the peanut gallery here? I'm doing 900-1,000 calories a day now. She recommends moving up to 1,200 calories a day for stabilization once I'm at 225, and then eventually 1,500. Because I can't comfortably eat more than 4 oz at a meal right now, I think I'm going to bump it up with switching out my low-fat cheese stick at snack with some real Peanut Butter, as I'm getting plenty of Protein otherwise. Just amazing that I'm here. Almost cried when I got on the scale this AM. Like a dream. But the journey continues. The only easy day was yesterday, as they say. But time for a new profile pic, and a new video update on the blog.

I've tried pro-yo. It's like a protein yogurt, 20g of protein. The flavor I've had is only ok, it just tastes like a frozen protein shake.

1 step forward & TEN back!
DonRodolfo replied to NeverBeTheSameAgain's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You to find a way to track what you're consuming. If you're putting everything you eat into, say, myfitnesspal it will tell you how much Protein you're getting. There are other apps but I'm not familiar with them. The fluids look good but I think you're supposed to be getting 48oz to 64oz. You don't need to do 30mins. If you're doing 5 everyday that's great, keep that up. Some reality here: there's no way after sleeve surgery you're consuming as much as you did before surgery. Like everyone else, you are probably in a calorie deficit everyday. The weight will come off, but it may be super slow if you're not getting enough calories or other reasons. Something needs to be tweaked and your surgeon's office is the best place to ask. I wish I had answers for you. -
I see a lot of good things that you are doing in your posts, like no sodas or candy, lots of exercise, drinking your Water. One thing that concerns me is when you say sometimes you go 5 -6 hours without eating, if I go too long without eating I get really hungry and which leads me to overeat and then I am hungry the rest of the day. I try and keep Protein bars with me just in case. But be careful some of them are no better than candy bars, they need to have 1g of protein for every 10 calories. I also keep tuna packs and a plastic fork. Being prepared is so important to my eating plan. Are you using a web site to journal your food? I think it is so important to point out hidden calories. When I had my first plateau I told my husband I wasn't losing but I was doing everything right, and he said no your not, and pointed out things that I eating and not taking into consideration. Once I started journaling I made better choices because each time I ate something that was high in calories that I didn't realize I would tell myself, I'm not eating that again. So even if you journal for a few weeks it will help you see where extra calories are sneaking in. My friend uses fitday.com and loves it. Be sure and weigh and measure everything you eat. My old boss use to say "If you keep doing what your doing, your going to keep getting what your getting." So basically if you want a different result you are going to have to do something different. I hope some of this helps you in some way. And one last piece of advice, listen to your Dr.

How much weight did you loose on your pre/ post-op liquid diet?
auntlucy replied to AppleBottom's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My doctor didn't ask me to do a pre-op liquid diet. I was on liquids for 6 weeks after surgery. I don't remember how much I lost before I started eating solid foods, but I do remember I lost 18 pounds in the first two weeks (was only allowed 2 oz 3 times a day plus protein supplements). After the first two weeks, I could have more liquids. I did gain a little bit (a few pounds only) when I started getting more calories, and from what I've heard from others on this site, that's normal. After a week or so, the weight started coming off again. Good luck! I know it seems like there is no way you can make it through the liquid stage. But now that I'm past it, it seems like it flew by! -
You are welcome! I'd advise you to eat only 1/4 or 1/2 of it and wait 24 hours. I always feel the symptoms of too much sugar alcohol in about 8-12 hours. What's the name of the protein bar?

Starting Modified Pre-Op Liquid Diet
imawhodat posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I bought from Wal-Mart Professional Strength whey Protein Plus Elite Series triple chocolate flavor. Calories 160 total fat 2g Total Carb 8g Fiber .5g Sugars 3g Protein 26g Says can be mixed with Water or skim milk. Granted the skim milk will add calories/fat etc. Has anyone tried this before? My doctor wants me to use shakes to supplement meals. I can have 300 calorie high protein meals twice a day. My goal is to loose 10lbs before surgery. I'm finally DONE with the food funeral. Its time to get serious. I just needed some time to prepare myself mentally for what I'm about to do. My son is leaving for Europe June 1 for ten days. He is 17 and will require me to help him pack etc. I'm not sure if I should have the surgery before he leaves or wait until after. I feel like if I have it before I might not be of much help to him getting him ready to go. I dunno, I know its kind of a weird thing to post, but its one of the things the is a huge factor in deciding my surgery date. I'm lucky in the fact my 2 teenage daughters will be out of school this week and are more than willing to help me with aftercare and helping to take care of my younger children (ages 7 &3) while I recover. My husband is also a gem and is willing to do whatever needs to be done. My gut/intuition tells me June 6. Guess I will see what my doctor says. Leanne -
Feeling Not Ready...
WLSResources/ClothingExch replied to choicemun's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's the point. Bouncing the feelings and experiences -- now and later -- around here and at in-person support groups are a great source of relief and good idea. My best advice for anyone who is having jitters in the weeks before surgery is to keep busy with preparations. Don't do everything at once. If you're typical day is busy, that's another thing, but if not so much, do a little prep at a time so that you're occupied until you leave home and head to the hospital. Before you head out on the morning of surgery, change the sheets. Simple task, but another way to keep your mind occupied for a few minutes. The reward will be a fresh, crisp bed when you get back home. If you're concerned, as I was, about keeping all instructions clear in your heads, get a sheet of oak tag and make a huge calendar to put on the wall. Draw it so that it starts two weeks before surgery and goes on for four to six weeks after. Write in all your little chores ("buy Vitamins," "buy Protein shakes," and so on) and the days you'll advance to various types of liquids to soft food, et al. Again, preparing the calendar is the good, compulsive kind of idiot work that helps keep jitters at bay. Referring to it daily boosts confidence that you're doing all the right things. Anyway, it worked for me. -
I guess I should note that everything I posted above was from a long term/maintenance viewpoint. Immediately postop and until I met goal, there were definite struggles and changes I had to deal with.... Preop and postop diet restrictions (which I followed to a T), needing IV fluids for dehydration 3 times when I was sick, making sure I got in all my Protein, staying away from carbs, no appetite for the first 4 months, 2 months of diarrhea followed by a "lifetime" of constipation (which is controlled by adding insoluble Fiber to my protein smoothies), temporary intolerance to lactose, plain Water and artificial sweeteners, etc. But these were all just "blips" on the radar compared to long term postop life.

Guys I need your help!
PdxMan replied to sleevinIT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you contacted your medical team? They are going to be your first, best spot for advice as they know your medical history and what your recent blood work looked like. That would be my first advice. Are you meeting your liquid intake goals they set for you? How about Protein? What is your caloric intake? To prevent dehydration and ending up in the ER, you need to be getting those liquids in. If Water isn't working for you, get some Gatorade or the like. Try different temperatures. Have a bottle with you all through the day. Set a timer on your phone for 15 minute intervals to help remind you. Find ways to ensure you are getting your liquid in. Diarrhea is common post op as your body has no solids to process. This can suddenly change to constipation, so be wary of this. Contact your medical team and follow their advice. -
She suggested replacing breakfast with a protein drink.

My dr is more restrictive. I can have 4-5 protein drinks from a limited list of brands, SF jello, clear broth and water. I have to do this 2 weeks before and I'm on day 2 and feel like I could chew a shoe!!!

Post-Op: Really Confused On What To Have?
Threetimesacharm replied to Dubai's topic in Food and Nutrition
no fruits on full liquid. Fruits are also very high in sugar. Full liquid is soups(thinned), shakes, pudding, jello, all sugar free, soupy cream of wheat. I have been having shakes and soup, I don't like the sweetness of pudding or jello and would prefer to consume only foods with protein to help get that number up. -
Mine was 10 days first 8 Protein drinks, broths and raw steamed veggies ( no starch) and plenty of Water. Last 2 days Protein Drinks, clear broths and water, water, water, but worth it. My surgery is tomorrow Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

I'm scheduled for surgery 10/5or6 and was told to start pre op diet 2weeks prior. For me it's 2 Protein shakes and a lean meat for dinner. Nothing else. I've noticed everyone is different. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
