  1. Good Morning everyone, i truly enjoyed reading everyone comments. When i tell you guys this has been super hard for me. My first year all i did was stay going into the hospital from issues with my surgery. like now i was rush to the hospital from my PCP. The issues was that my throat felt like something was blocking it and it was cutting off my airways. Once i arrive to the hospital and they check me out. According to the doctor it's GERD I HAVE. its been kicking my butt for years. like now cook food is a no go for me. cant swallow meat so i do not eat it. Let's not forget about constipation x10. Plus now i have arthritis in both knees and neck until its hard for me to walk. fluid building up because of my 20lb weight gain from the steroid shots... just started walking again... i need some relief from all this. The insurance i have do not cover no type of weight loss surgery. when i got my sleeve done my late husband insurance paid 100%, but this market place cigna EPO connect do not cover at all. unless the doctor will have to submit a medical note. i do not know what to do helpp...
  2. I am 10 weeks post op and have only lost 20lbs. It’s so slow and I have been fighting cravings every day for the last six weeks. I started exercising, built muscle and the hunger set in. Today I caved, had some sugar free candies and a slice of medium ham/pineapple pizza (no crust) and a half cup of Fairlife chocolate milk. I ended with 77 carbs!! Normally I try to keep it below 40. I’m sitting here and I feel like there’s this little disordered eating voice in my body laughing at me like “muahaha! Today we regain control of you! It’s only a matter of time before we stop this train and back it up!” I can literally sense my body storing fat. Okay not literally… but it feels that way. im about to hit my first big milestone once I go under 180 and I wonder if I’m self sabotaging? Do I really think I deserve this? What if I’m one of the statistics that doesn’t lose their weight? Ugh I’m so scared that I’m going to mess this up. Please tell me I’m not alone? Does anyone ever feel this way? 😢

    SoCal Kaiser Options Friends!

    I am with Kaiser Socal too. my surgery is tentatively scheduled for June 19th. I have to meet the surgeon on June06. I have not reached the target weight goal he had asked me to reach. so not sure if my surgery will get postponed. fingers crossed. I loved the Options classes too. I took it last year. Good luck on your journey!.
  4. I am four weeks out today. Had VSG 4/28. I’ve lost 19 pounds, but the majority of that was in the first week (15 lbs). I am very discouraged right now. Feel like I spent all of this money and am sacrificing food and not seeing a weight loss.

    Any April Surgery Dates?

    I'm assuming you meant chia seeds. I have a few bags in my freezer that I'm contemplating using again post-surgery. Asked my NUT if it was OK at 5 weeks and she approved. When I asked her if they should be used dry or soaked she said dry. By the look on her face, I think she was guessing. LOL The only time I used them dry was when I had bad acid reflux. The dry seeds would soak up the excess acid in my stomach for almost instant relief. But you have to be careful as these will soak up to 10 times their amount of weight in liquid. It actually caused a death when someone downed a bunch dry without drinking enough water to fully swallow them all and the seeds expanded in their throat. Yikes!! Indian runners used them back in the day to run long distances, having to carry very little water. But dry in pouches. Hmmm... Many many articles online listing its benefits. Alot don't say whether to consume dry or soaked. Just 2T a day. That would definitely skew measurements. I'm wondering, will this help us in our quest to stay hydrated longer? If taken dry, will the expansion stretch our new small stomach or pull much needed moisture from us? What say you?

    Dry skin...

    I moisturized and exfoliated till the cows came home but it didn't get rid of it. The only thing that seemed to help was suntanning. But I stopped that years ago. I developed a bad skin picking obsession too. That trapped hair follicle always had a plug of pure white keratin surrounding it. If only we could bottle it and sell it. xD A skin doctor confirmed what I had and prescribed some sort of hydroxy acid but even that was only minimally helpful and a pain in the ass to use consistently. It was easier to just go lay out in the sun. My Mama had it and called it chicken skin so I know it's hereditary. She also had the most beautiful skin besides the bumps which most people really don't notice except for the one who has it. Whenever I took her into the doctor, the nurses would always comment on how great her skin looked for her age. It healed quickly too after surgeries etc. That was one of the reasons I put off having WLS for so long. I knew a few people who have had it and thought they didn't look well. Maybe they weren't taking their vitamins??? But then again, if people knew you as overweight, then see you thin, they immediately think you must be sick. But I know that losing weight can cause fat loss in the face. Kinda like what some people are now calling Ozempic face. My GP also has a skin clinic. So when she approved my decision for WLS she told me if I needed help with botox etc I would know where to go. I'm trying to stay optimistic in that my skin won't fail me now and it will snap back for me without plastics or fillers and that those tiny bumps will somehow save me. LOL But in the end, I had my surgery to hopefully heal my body of comorbidities. That trumps everything else.

    Happy with your dietician?

    There are good ones, bad ones & so so ones. I saw one years ago. She told me I wasn’t eating enough & that was all. No advice on food choices, eating plans, etc. Four months later I hadn’t lost a pound, though my own research, so I left. The one I saw with my surgery was so so. I’d have ten minute appointments. She never checked my weight. Told me I was doing great. But every now & again she’d come out with a nugget of information gold. Friends saw a bad dietician a couple of year ago who, even though they told her they were long term pescatarians, vegetarians who eat seafood, proceeded to give them meat based recipes & menu plans. Check with your clinic & insurance to see if you can change dietician because I agree you have to feel comfortable with them & trust they will be helpful & supportive of your needs & circumstances.

    Dry skin...

    I thought one of the treatments for pillaris is regularly applying heavy moisturisers as dry skin & pillaris tend to go hand in hand?? Also thought it’s not always caused by excess keratin but from inflammation from twisted hair follicles. As for looking older, for a period after your weight loss you may look older or tired - drawn. Much of this is temporary until your body resettles. My uncle told my mum I looked like death after my weight loss. Not nice but a few months later he was telling her I was looking so great. The other thing to remember is you may end up with skin laxity on your face from the loss of fat & your wrinkles won’t be plumped out any more. ☹️ The benefit of the loss of facial fat though is the appearance of your cheekbones, a longer neck, a jaw line, etc. Even my hooded eyelids went as I lost the fat that caused them. I have some skin laxity but haven’t gone down the face lift route. I am also almost 58 so it is to be expected. But I get some Dysport (Botox), had a little filler just in front of my ears where I had no fat at all, & have done micro needling/RF (mainly fur acne scars) Even before I started those treatments, I was told I look younger than my age. I do take care of my skin but genetics play a big role.

    Low pulse ???

    After my surgery, I was getting in better shape (from both weight loss and increased exercise) and my resting heart rate steadily decreased. By about a year post-op, my resting heart rate was 38 beats per minute and I was experiencing fatigue, weakness, and edema in my legs. My surgeon said this can happen because of rapid weight loss and referred me to a cardiologist, who diagnosed me with sinus bradycardia. The cardiologist said that some people can live with bradycardia without having symptoms, in which case, it's not really a concern, but since I was having symptoms that affected me pretty severely, I had to get a pacemaker.
  10. Ive fought my weight all my life- sometimes healthy, but most of the time overweight, so dieting wasn’t new it me, BUT after covid and hitting peri/menopause, the weight came to stay. I was miserable- joint pain, pre-diabetic- and couldn’t lose weight no matter what - even on my usual low carb/keto path. Tried metformin—ugh, Tried contrave- Wellbutrin/naltroxene combo— sicker than a dog and scared of messing with my mental health. HRT was causing the weight to climb- and in november had hysterectomy - and by February hit my highest weigh of 195, Called and got a local Bariatric surgeon consult. Went in and discussed it- decided on VSG. I was NOT going to hit 200 - none of my clothes fit and everything hurt. Found out the process could be months log- so I got on internet and had Mexico- flights, surgeon and two days off work booked and planned for the next month. It cost me about as much as out of pocket would have cost me in the states and i was able to lose weight before surgery- where if id stayed in states, i could have been denied if i lost anything (MX requirement was BMI of 30, states was 35 and comorbitities, i think) I was READY-and was NOT in the mood to wait. So decided Feb 3, and surgery March 3. So glad i did it!
  11. I am almost 15 years out of bypass. I started at 275 and I loss down to a 168. I have gained 70 pounds. It took years but it creeped back up. I was proud of my size when I was at my smallest but I felt like crap and I was sick. Between anemia (a result of the bypass) and poor MENTAL health, I found that I was better at a BMI that said I was overweight. I never liked my body as I was never "perfect". I think it was because I was not happy in my day to day life. That meant I couldn't be happy with me. I divorced and spiraled for a while. I fell into the bat eating habits and didn't want to exercise. I think the mental should have taken precedence over the physical and I probably could have maintained it. I am at a place where I like ME and I can focus on my weight without it being about finding OTHERS acceptance. I only want to lose 50. But, I am focusing on strength training. Some days I struggle but over all I feel great. I am starting the walking/1300 calorie counting. Strength training and therapy are also part of that. I know how to lose weight and I will again. But, more importantly, I know how to process my emotions and I pray I don't turn to food.

    Dry skin...

    Some people who knew me before my weight loss have told me I look younger now, and I routinely get surprised reactions when I share my age with people who didn’t know me before. So I think alls well in my case at least! I do have a skincare routine though 😁

    Low pulse ???

    If you are often doing anything aerobic such as walking, running, sex, sports, and/or any number of other things, ones' heart learns to pump more blood so it doesn't need to beat as often. When I was binge running, my resting pulse went to 38-40. Generally this won't cause dizziness because the heart is just more efficient and can do the same job with fewer beats. If you are taking blood pressure or some other meds they may cause dizziness. Especially during the weight loss phase, meds were dosed for a larger body. Losing weight effectively makes some meds stronger. Get your Doc to (re)evaluate your meds and supplements. I had to have BP meds reduced 2 times before they ultimately got rid of them. I would say it's also a wise choice to see a doctor, even a heart doctor. Whenever I've been normal sized, even as a child, I've had Orthostatic hypotension (dizziness when standing). It was never bad nor really any concern until about 7 years after my WLS while at work, I jumped up very quickly and took a bit of a nap. Since it was in front of the CEO, he insisted I have it seen to immediately. So I got a nice ride in an ambulance and after some poking and prodding, a nice, cozy room. I had several tests, and apparently scored well since I won a brand new pacemaker! I never win anything, so it was pretty cool. Good luck, Tek

    Pouch reset?

    Echoing the "reset isn't real", and definitely co-signing on the calories. Here's a link to calorie calculators for loss and maintenance - pop in your stats and it gives you calorie guides. Super easy. Weight loss absolutely slows to a crawl as you reach goal, but staying in a deficit works, even if it's slow. I also wanted a "buffer" for the 3-year gain-back scenario, and I'm now ten kilos past my goal, which was what I was after. This whole process is just ongoing calorie adjustment and patience.

    May 2023 surgeries

    Yes I'm sleeping so much Lindsay. And I feel pretty weak. I still have nausea every day. My post op appt was today and I just couldn't go so thankfully we did it by phone. He's ordered blood work for me as my nausea at this stage is abnormal and wants to see if somethings going on. He's also sent me scripts for 2 new meds. He says my fatigue is due in part to rapid weight loss. I've lost 11kgs or 24.2pds in 2 weeks which he was surprised to hear. I'm to to stop my vitamins for 2 weeks to see if that helps. The nausea was so bad this morning I threw up. I'm really thirsty which is good as drinking then doesn't feel like a chore. My 18yo asked me this morning if this was expected to be feeling like I am? Heck no lol. I anticipated a lot but not 2 weeks of nausea and to be repulsed by many foods.

    Back Pain when walking

    Most of us experience some pain as our joints, muscles, tendons, centre of gravity, etc. relearn how to stand (better posture) & move without our carrying our excess weight. And it sometimes doesn’t start straight away. For example, I was slouching a lot & had to consciously not & sit upright. I also had upper back pain because my bras were too big. Bought new bras & my back pain went. Forty pounds is a good amount of weight to lose (congratulations). Had you started to become more active with the weight loss? If so, using your muscles, etc. more may have contributed. A chiropractor, physiotherapist, acupuncturist or massage therapist may help. I did an acupuncture session to release the tight muscles in my back which helped until I got my new underwear. Don’t give up.

    Pouch reset?

    Congratulations on your weight loss. Whoo hoo! Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as a pouch reset. It’s just a myth. You can’t regain those surgery honeymoon period bonuses like reduced hunger or appetite. Remember your smaller tummy is still there which is a big positive. It just comes down to how you use it. If you seem to have stabilised at your new current weight, it’s possible this is your new set point (a gift of the surgery). This is the weight your body is happiest at & is easiest to maintain. Our old much higher set point is one of the reasons we would regain any weight we’d lose so easily in the past. Remember not everyone reaches the goal weight they have set for themselves & that’s okay. To lose more weight you need to reduce your calorie intake. Though to maintain the lower weight you will also need to continue use to eat less than what you do now. For example my BMR at my weight, age, height & activity level is about 1500 calories. If I weighed 10kg more at 60kg my calorie needs would be about 1700 calories to maintain. Is a lower calorie intake sustainable in the long term? This is something only you can answer knowing your lifestyle & how you want to live your life. Also you can’t exercise the extra weight away. Exercise only accounts for about 10% of the weight you want to lose. Want to lose 10lbs? Exercising accounts for about 1lb. Not everyone experiences the 2nd/3rd year bounce back regain (usually 10-20lbs). I didn’t. Some of the regain is your body settling at a slightly higher weight with your set point. Some of it is because how you were eating (calories, activity level, eating style) wasn’t sustainable. Some of it is because of lifestyle choices. And yes some of it is from becoming complacent, less vigilant or falling back into old habits. Some of the regain you have control over. Some you don’t. When I reached my current weight, I too thought I’d have bounce back regain wriggle room & it would be okay if I ended up at or around my goal. At 4 years I’m a about 1-2lbs (depending upon the day lol!) more than at where my weight first settled.

    May 2023 surgeries

    Although it’s been miserable and eating is still a chore and everything tastes gross… I’m been cleared for Soft foods and my doctor is thrilled with my current results. Down 39 lbs currently which he said is way ahead of schedule! This is with a 2 week pre op liver shrinking diet and now exactly 3 weeks post op tomorrow. Starting weight was 357. 318 this morning. That’s pretty exciting!

    ROBOTIC SLEEVE SURGERY

    Nope not just robotic surgery. Mine are in a straight line too but in line with my belly button so much lower. Think it’s more likely to do with the amount of weight you carry in your abdominal area and where they have to situate the incisions to best access your tummy, etc.
  20. Addiction is the right word to use in my case haha. Now that the weight loss has slowed down considerably, I need some sort of motivation / rewards to keep me going. That is where new clothes come in. I now dare myself to try new sizes and styles that I've never dreamed of wearing before WLS to see how it fits. Yesterday I tried size S polo shirts, size 32" slim fit jeans, size S slim fit dress shirt and all fit me nicely. I ended buying all. My wardrobe is full of cloth now and I need to stop. As for insecurities, I'm really insecure about how my thighs look. I seem to have lost weight (a lot) from everywhere but my thighs. I need to do something about that for sure. I hope the weather improves soon so I can go back to cycling again.
  21. I was able to break a lot of bad habits after WLS but I've developed new ones along the way. I'll share some of mine and I'm keen to hear yours too. Some of the Bad habits before WLS: 1. Spending a lot of money on junk food (fast food, potatoes chips, chocolate etc) specially when I'm at work. 2. Procrastination when it comes to exercising and doing something about my weight. I've reached a stage where I've decided to just let myself go and do nothing about it 3. Avoiding social gatherings if I knew that photos will taken or if it involves any sort of physical activity 4. Eating before going to bed and while watching TV I'm glad to report that I've broken all of the above and I couldn't be happier. Bad (not necessarily) habits after WLS 1. Spending a lot of money on new clothes. I can't resist buying new clothes if it fits or I know it will fit me in a month time or so. Yesterday I went to the mall to buy tomatoes from the supermarket and ended up buying 2 polo shirts, 1 shirt and new jeans 🤣. I got the tomatoes of course. 2. I hate looking at old photos of me and I really don't like the way I looked in those. I didn't have this feeling before. 3. I take a lot of selfies and photos of myself now haha. I guess I'm making up for past time 4. I'm not telling people the whole truth when asked how I lost the weight. I only tell them about diet and exercise and even show them my latest cycling records but nothing about the WLS. If only told a handful of people about my WLS because I thought they could benefit from one. One of my friends is planning his WLS next month. 5. I don't like how certain parts of my body look after losing a lot of weight (I don't hate tho) like my armpits which have turned into caves, the loose skins on my belly, my scars. I guess I'm a bit self conscious about those.

  24. hey everyone. im almost to weeks into my 4 week liquid diet and im struggleing. i stayed with in the same cals i would have drinking just shakes and eatting 4 cups of veggies. im back on track now. but im worried it messed up my weight loss

    September surgery buddies!!

    Glad you are feeling so well so fast! The liquid diet was the hardest, hopefully you can move to more interesting food soon. The time does go faster than I expected though. Great job on the weight loss!
