I am having my surgery in just a few days (eek!) and I have a question about diarrhea. Did anyone have it post surgery? I will be traveling home on an airplane 3 days after my surgery and am so scared it will be a problem!

So my bypass surgery was on 8/28. Everything went well I woke up in the worst pain. Luckily they gave me a pain pump. I just had to remember to push it. Lol I asked everyone what to expect and still wasn’t prepared for the pain. Walking is very tiresome and talk about drinking these liquids is difficult. Sipping every 15 minutes seem impossible. But I’m not hungry. I’m able to pas gas and burping since day 2 but no BM (sorry TMI). Also my period came down super early wasn’t expecting to be bleeding from two areas😢😢 right now. I’m only sleeping for about 4/5 hours wake up, walk, bathroom, check drain then sip and surf the internet til i fall back to sleep. This has been difficult but I’m so happy i got it done i can’t wait to be fully healed and can get back to my normal life. Anyone waiting your day. It’s ok to be scared, i wouldn’t have known i had surgery had it not been for the pain I felt like i woke up soon as they put me to sleep lol. Your going to regret it at first but keep pushing through! Ps if you stopped taking the pain meds after day 1 and didn’t need help once you got home your a champ! I came and stayed at my moms and my little cousin has been a lifesaver. Also it has helped having a surgery twin and literally talking everyday and sharing experiences. Good luck to those who have upcoming surgeries, speedy recovery and I’m officially on the loser bench.

How long before a BM? 9 days post op
theladyslipper replied to RellaBelle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Colace was a life saver for me in the beginning. (Not peri-colace) You can find it at any drug store. Life changer. I will say that those first few weeks before I tried colace, I used miralax & benefiber--I literally still thank God for each BM I have. TMI, but when you are struggling in that department, there is a gratitude that I don't know when I'll stop having. I'm 12 weeks. Colace! -
Miracle cure for constipation...at least for me
Losing_It_In_Texas posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know about y'all, but I was suffering from MAJOR constipation after my surgery on 9-22-08.....I mean like I had only 2 BM's in a month. When I went in for my first fill on 10-22, I told my surgeon about it and he recommended eating 4-5 dried apricots EVERY morning with my breakfast. I was skeptical at first since I had already tried Miralax and Milk of Magnesia to no avail. Let me tell you, the apricots have worked wonders for me....I am now going at least every other day....WOOHOOO!!! TMI, I know....but maybe this will help someone else who is suffering like I was. -
My lack of hunger feeling only lasted for a month. Now, when I feel hunger it doesn't take much to satisfy it. I rarely have that "I'm so hungry I could eat the whole kitchen feeling." I'm almost 2 yrs out from RNY GB and that rumbling sound for me is peristalsis in my bowel! My abdomen has gotten so flat sometimes I can actually feel gas bubbles moving through it and can predict when it leaves the body (sorry if TMI!) Now that I think about it, the gas bubbles kind of feel like when you feel a baby move early in pregnancy!

First off thank you for responding. And oh no you give me all the tmi. Lol I'm one to research everything and although I hear everyone's story I can't help but feel scared. I just want to hit a fast forward button and get to a couple months after my surgery date

sept 24 surgery date anyone else?
midwestchickie replied to littlesweet's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Cleans out the sinusus..haha. I'm on day 4 now...feeling better today. I'm sure this is a little tmi, but just to pass along to others reading, I had sort of *forgot* that it had been over 6 days since going poopie....I wasn't having any of your normal indications that I needed to go and I figured I was eating much, so no big deal. Well, I guess my body rebelled last night and all of a sudden, I did have to go...which is good. I felt sooooo much better after that it seemed strange to me that I wasn't even thinking that I should need to go. So...moral to the story...well...I'm not really sure....go poopie! Haven't had any of the referred gas pain, yay! In my Quest for some tasty fare, I got some panera onion Soup to take home yesterday.....I blended it (onions) in my food processor and boy...was it yummy. My desire for some *real* food is growing with each day, but I'm hanging in there! Don't want to ruin anything. Hope everyone is doing good today. -

Coffee after Sleeve...
areader4life replied to NikkiRT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
About a week, maybe two, post op, I started back to my one cup a day. I rarely finish the whole cup (once it's temp drops too much), but this is what helps keep me regular....(sorry, tmi). It's the only caffeine I consume and I don't count those ounces into my "water" total. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
ok this is gross but I am going to go there....as a med tech that has looked at specimens under the microscope I can verify that celery does NOT digest. The fibers come out in your stool. Because I know this and have seen it myself I am staying WAY away from putting that into my much smaller pouch. If I eat it at all I make sure it is cut very fine and not in long strands! Sorry if TMI!

feeling guilty about not sharing entire truth about weight loss
Clementine Sky replied to ForLfKlovr's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There's a difference between lying by omission and simply keeping personal matters private. It's your prerogative to share what you wish, and with whom. Everyone keeps something or another to themselves, or at least they should. If you'd struggled with constipation you probably wouldn't feel compelled to tell everyone you encountered about the changes you made to improve your bowel movements, because that's TMI. If you want to tell everyone who inquires about your weight loss, or to share about it on your social media, that's your perfect right. That's not a morally superior choice to keeping it private, though. Both choices are perfectly valid and perfectly ethical. The only ones who actually need to know you had surgery are those who are either personally and directly impacted by it or giving you medical care, such as a spouse if he's helped to finance it and is your support person, or your doctors. That's it. I had the VSG last August, and to this date the only ones besides my physicians who know about it are my parents who accompanied me for the surgery and my husband. Not my brother, not my best friend since I was 11, not my colleagues, students, or neighbors. My parents and husband have provided me with all the emotional support I need. I'm not an ambassador for weight loss surgery and feel no obligation to share about it with others. WLS isn't a new-fangled procedure few know about, and we're therefore compelled to provide education for. Those who are interested in having it can find information on their own. I didn't decide to have WLS because of someone else telling me about it. My reproductive endocrinologist recommended it to help me with fertility because other patients my age (early 30s) and size (14 at the time, with a BMI much lower than normal for the VSG) have benefitted from it. If I told people about my surgery, I'd then have to explain my reasons for it, which would entail explaining PCOS and my struggles with conceiving. That's raw and private. We all have our personal reasons for wanting this surgery, and we are perfectly entitled to be as public or private about them as we desire. When people have asked me about how I've lost weight I've told them the truth - I logged my food to become more aware of what I'm eating and make responsible changes, and I bought a bike and started using it to commute to and from work to add in enjoyable exercise to my day. I also tell them I consulted with my endocrinologist and followed her medical advice. -
I am three weeks post op and have felt awesome this whole time except for last night and today. I have had diarrhea and nausea like no other. I'm running to the bathroom like every 15-20 minutes and water is making me nauseous. Also some abdominal cramping. Has anyone had anything similar? What ended up happening?
-
I hear ya! Right after surgery I lost a bunch of “water weight” but in the four weeks following, hardly a pound is gone! Sorry if this is TMI but I have averaged only 1 bm per week, too. I think it’s all just piling up in my intestines, waiting for the dam to break.

One week out of gastric sleeve surgery
MerelyMichelle replied to johny2k7's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am almost 2 months post OP from VSG and still regret it even though it’s getting easier to get required protein and water level in daily. l’ve had nothing but pain, and problems since surgery and to top it all off, my surgeon will not listen to my concerns, talks over me and only seems interested in covering himself against a lawsuit. That’s the only reason I can find as to why he’d send me for an upper GI knowing I was already severely dehydrated, and constipated to the point of impaction. The barium caused even worse constipation, and now I have <TMI Alert> An anal fissure and hemorrhoids because of the strain. I found out I was overdosing my body with omeprazole (through 23andMe) even at only one pill per day. Apparently my body is slow to metabolize this drug in particular. I don’t blame him for not knowing my body chemistry but I do blame him for not listening to me and identifying the symptoms of overdose. like I said I’ve had nothing but trouble, and these few things are a drop in the bucket. I still get nauseated easily, and trying to find foods that are on the list is both time consuming and expensive. People say it will get easier but right now that’s no help. At this point I feel like I’ve traded one issue (obesity) for far more issues (everything that came with VSG surgery). I know my story is only one, and there are a million others. I sincerely hope someone finds my story helpful. Good luck on your journey. -
Everyone's experience with vitamins is different. I had the Loop DS and I take 1 Bariatric Complete (orange flavored) vitamin (with iron) and 2 Celebrate (grape flavored) without iron (I apparently process iron REALLY well as my iron levels are perfect with just the one iron, more than one makes me constipated, tmi I know). As well as two Bariatric Advantage Calcium Citrate (I used to take 3 but my calcium was high). And I also take 10,000IU liquid Vitamin A every other day. It just really depends on how your body handles the vitamins. Some can take less, some have to take more and some have to add extra like my Vitamin A. You'll figure out the process as you go. Just choose an initial brand and take what they tell you to and adjust as needed. As for recipes... I get a lot of recipes here: https://www.bariatriceating.com/blogs/recipes

I did have a BM, but just diarrhea (sorry TMI). I guess it could be gas settling, but I thought since my surgery was Monday and today is Friday that would be too long for the gas to still be in there.

When does this get easier?
Dealchic replied to SleevyNicks's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sleevy, I'm on day 5 now and I agree with you the gas pains are the worst. I'll tell you what I have done to help and I am much better today. I definitely walk every hour. I know this may be TMI but during my walk I go sit on the toilet also because at least for me it is mentally easier to pass gas's while there. I have used the gasx strips which have helped a little and the thing that I think helps the most is lying on my left side with my knees bent. Lots of pillows! I did that two nights ago and burped and farted ALL night. I am still having pains but they are not nearly as bad today. Oh, and a heating pad between my shoulder blades (where my gas pains are the worst) has helped immensely. I also had hiatal hernia repair so I feel a little constricted around my chest but it's not so bad. One last thing. I'm allowed my liquid pain meds once every six hours but it was only lasting for three hours. I am now taking 1\2 a dose every three hours which has really really really helped I feel for you right now and hope that some of this helps. -
I am 2 weeks out so I'll answer what I can... I'm still in a recliner and am planning on being there for another 2 weeks probably. I am able to get in my 64 oz and 70 g Protein now. I was able to probably as of day 9 or 10. The gas pains left as of day 6/first bm (sorry tmi) BUT i am still having active gas creation at both ends (very embarrassing since i've been at work all week in a quiet cubicle setting) Get up in the night to do what? Bathroom or just walk? I haven't gotten up at all but I also was using pain meds immediately before bed up til a day or two ago which knocks me out. I've been having trouble getting up in the morning. Good luck to you in your recovery!

Here's a little story ya'll might find amusing. Back when I was trying to lose weight pre sleeve I had heard about the wonders of chia seeds. So I went to the Health food Store and bought a decent size container. Rushed home ready and raring to try them out. I quickly skimmed over the directions... Take 2 TEASPOONS... Upon opening the container there was one of those measuring cups inside, the kind that comes in cans of coffee. I failed to notice the measurements on the side of it and proceeded to mix 2 of the measuring cups of chia seeds into a container of strawberry yogurt and downed it as fast as I could. I was fine for an hour or so. Then I started getting an uneasy feeling. My stomach was rumbling and grumbling and next thing I know I have to go running for the bathroom. I then spent the next 6 hours making regular trips to the bathroom with explosive diarrhea, cursing my decision to buy chia seeds. LOL <-- sorry if the last part is TMI Lesson learned: ALWAYS read the side of the cup for proper measurement!

So I dont hve a date yet, getting close. Doing research still and I hear about the horrible gas pains. So.. I must know, is it gas or do u poop and have relief for a bit? Is it ongoing like u wanna die? Or is it like spasms and contractions? I heard 1 girl say she used a firm smll pillow to rest her incisions on. Wondering if that would while u tried to use the bathroom.. Please, any feedback is much appreciated thank u
