  1. I have been a vegetarian for 20 years now and just had the sleeve on 4/21. I'm lacto-ovo vegetarian, which means I eat eggs and dairy, but no meat, animal broths, Gelatin, etc. Eventually, I'd like to become vegan, but right now I really need eggs and cheese (not big into milk) to meet my Protein needs. I try to get free range and local when I can to ease my conscience lol. Even with those my nutritionist was trying to get me to add fish, which I refused. We compromised on Beans since my program insists on protein only for the first few months. We aren't supposed to have vegetables until 3-5 months in, which is hard for me. But no other veggies besides beans and the soy/TVP in my veggie "meats". So far I've had a great recovery. I started solid foods a few days ago and everything is going down fine and I'm losing weight steadily. As long as I include cheese and dairy, I'm meeting all my protein goals and haven't had any complications (not even nausea). My surgeon says I'm having a textbook perfect recovery.

    19g Mediterranean Feast!

From the album: Post-Op RNY 6/26/2014

Score! I bought a tube of dill paste from the fridge section near the vegetables. I squeezed some into greek yogurt, added 1 ounce of soy milk, and it made an incredible side to go with my dinner! Will work for fish, tuna, hard boiled eggs, etc. Makes a great helper for chewing. Today I ate Shwarma (chicken thighs) 3 oz @ 16g Greek Yogurt with Dill 1 oz @ 3g Vegetarian Moussaka. -- Although I am in the purees stage, I can no longer eat that texture. I will gag and starve. So I sad for an hour and chewed responsibly, and I got this meal in. Hurray.

    Peanut Flour

So I found peanut flour posted somewhere... perhaps eggface, and looked around for it on the net. I found a product that looked good, with nothing in it but ground partially defatted roasted peanuts, and bought some to experiment with. 1/4 cup 110 calories 4gms fat 4gms Fiber 8gms carbs 16 gms protein!!! I opened the bag, stuck my finger in, and tasted the powder. Peanutty yumness!,. Next I mixed it about 50/50 with Water and a little salt and stevia ( I started with a little less than 50% water and worked my way up to a nice creamy thick consistency) I smeared it on a cracker and.... YUMMY again I think in an asian dressing, with stevia, garlic, soy sauce and vinegar would be nice... in a smoothy with yogurt and banana as an asian dipping sauce.... I will post my experiments as I try them.... you do too if any of you try it! As a Vegetarian, I am always looking for alternate forms of Protein. I bought it on netritiion.com protein plus flour http://www6.netrition.com/protein_plus_peanut_flour.html

told I can't be on a vegetarian diet.

I can see it being hard if you are vegan but not vegetarian. Unless you are a "junk food" vegetarian and don't know how to prepare high protein meals or if you are a picky eater.

told I can't be on a vegetarian diet.

I am a pre & post op vegetarian down 69 pounds in five months. I will admit that veganism might not be entirely do-able but as an ovo-lacto veggie I have no problems meeting my numbers daily with shakes, tofu, cottage cheese, nuts, seeds, soy, yogurt and seitan. I'm not really allowed beans, quinoa or chickpeas which were a source of protein prior too surgery. Nobody is gonna fault you for eating tofu in place of chicken as long as you meet your numbers.

Dietician gave me an assignment - almost ready to qualify

Im sorry, I dont understand this blogging and I cannot figure out how to write to you personally so my posts dont take up space on here. Yes, the one ounce cups have us a little worried - also - the non-reversible nature also has us worried. One of the reasons I chose the lapband is because it is reversible. This particular surgeon (the closest to me about two and a half hours away) is one of the first to perform this procedure and he pulls the stomach up around the band and stitches the stomach to itself. This also makes, I would guess, a tighter pocket. How in the heck, and please forgive me here, how in the heck can you fit one or one and a half cups of food into a one ounce pocket. I, myself am a vegetarian so I am going to have to eat processed protein and that makes me nervous. I will quote the doctor on this and I would like to see what you think. I would love to have your contact or a way to contact you as I said, I dont want to take up space on here for just me.....anyway the doctor said. "you will do a protein shake in the morning - 8 ounces of liquid over and hour time. You will also need once at lunch. these protein shakes cannot have milk in them. No fruit either. If you feel you are in a social setting and have to eat, you will live out of a shot glass. you fill your shot glass with protein. chicken (dark meat), beef, pork and take eraser size bites. it should take about 20 minutes to eat a one ounce cup of food" All of that made me nervous especially in social settings - I am not going to tell anyone about my surgery. I posted before asking about the one ounce portion but didnt remember it was on here. Then my dietician found this forum and thought it was a wealth of informatin from 'real' people. I just want to thank you for responding.

told I can't be on a vegetarian diet.

I was raised a vegetarian and am quickly going back to that lifestyle. I much prefer the taste and have found my food to have more protein, less fat and calories than meat. Here is my nutritional breakdown from MFP for today. Not one bite of meat.
  8. enterprise01: Hey thanks for responding :-)! A Trekker after me own heart. I love that one too. I'm a big Trek fan. I agree with you. I think after so many years of not eating fish or shellfish and then eating that lobster, I think my guts went into a state of shock. It's slowly going away, thank god! Had me worried. Serena: Ah..as I said, it was the first time I have eaten fish in years,(for reasons I won't get into) I don't need the "what is a vegetarian lesson." I'm a vegetarian. Not going to argue it with you. See ya. Kthxbye
  9. Hi Everyone I'm a vegetarian, and 2 nights ago I was at a wedding where everything was either meat or seafood. SO I ate the seafood. I had lobster as my entree for the first time in several years. Since then I have had cramping pain in my lower front abdomen around my navel area, to the sides around it and below. It comes and goes, but it's really weird. It continues in my sleep too, and keeps me up. The last time I felt similar pains was in high school, I had a bad cramping in my gut right before I got a bad intestinal flu. But I feel fine otherwise. No flu. My belly feels swollen. I tried all my old standby's for IBS (which I have) ginger, aloe juice, charcoal capsules. Nothing works. Anyone??
  10. Find the Proteinoholics thread on this site. Lots of vegetarians and vegans!
  11. Hey! I’m currently 2 and a half months Post-op and I’m a vegetarian. My nutritionist says it’s a bad time to become vegan because I need the “protein” from meat. I’m 67lbs down from my highest weight and 47lbs down from my surgery weight. What are your opinions ? Any WLS vegetarians/ vegans?

    Tofu!?!?

Protein content in tofu: One half-cup serving of raw firm tofu contains 10.1 grams of protein. The recommended daily intake is 56 grams for most men and 46 for most women. A half-cup of tofu is approximately 4 oz by weight, or just under 1/3 of the average sized 14 oz package of tofu. By comparison, 1/2 cup dairy milk contains 5.1 grams of protein, one 3 oz egg contains 6 grams and 4 oz ground beef contains about 26 grams of protein. Tofu is an excellent source of vegetarian protein. Calories in tofu: One half-cup serving of raw firm tofu contains 94 calories. By comparison, 4 oz ground beef contains 331 calories, 1/2 cup of 2% milk has 60 calories and 4 oz of cheese packs 320 calories. http://vegetarian.about.com/od/healthnutrition/p/tofunutrition.htm Any recipe you have or find can be converted to using Tofu, it's a Great Protein alternative and if it calls for rice try Quinoa, it's healthier than rice. Problem is Society is all about eating meat When a plant based diet is much healthier in general.

    Considering the Lap Band!

I just thought I would chime in here. Everyone goes into WLS for different reasons, and each person decides how they want to use the tool of having a band. When I committed to the surgery, I committed to a lifestyle change. I paid careful attention to everything my doctor told me about not eating carbs and sticking with vegetables and Protein. Before the surgery, I was a vegetarian, and I decided to change that because I was eating too many processed carbs, and my body was having a negative reaction to that. I am happy with the band. When I first was banded, I kept my calories around 800. Now I eat about 1,000 a day - three meals and few Snacks. I do not eat processed carbs, and I do not feel deprived. I am not saying this is an easy journey. I have had to work hard, but it is so worth it.
  14. In the UK there isnt the emphasis on protein shakes that there is in the US after all will some people really buy and drink those shakes for the rest of their lives i get all my protein from normal natural sources such as fish and chicken etc greek yoghurt, frozen peas and milk .. if u plan your meals once u can start eating solids u can easy get your protein in without suppliments The vegetarians on this forum also get their protein in from sources like beans etc so i would look at alternative ways for protein ..

Can you eat all this in a day? HELP!

I doubt you will be able to eat the yogurt early on, it can be dense. You might be better off with 3 shakes a day. It took me about 1 to 1.5 hours to finish a shake. Since they were a liquid, I could just sip on them as long as it took to get them in. The 20 minute rule didn't apply to liquids like Protein shakes. If you know a good veggie broth you like, I would suggest getting an unflavored Protein powder to add to the broth. All of my vegan or vegetarian friends are fat, except one that I think is just naturally thin. They are the worst sugar addicts I have ever met in my life. And there are tons of great Vegan treats in Chicago, which doesn't help. The metaphysical place that closed down about 12 years ago on the north side use to have the best vegan Cookies, I wasn't even Vegan and I used to devour them.

    Chew-able Vitamins WITH IRON

I know you posted about a chewable. However, my nutritionist recommened nutrametrix multivitamin w/iron. It's a liquid vitamin and ok for lacto-ovo vegetarians. The website is nutrametrix.com. I hope this help.

    Any vegetarians out there?

I actually want to become a vegetarian but I'm afraid of the iron level. I don't wanna take iron pills which I don't but did before surgery (had a bleeding issue with period) so if I don't eat steak not daily I might need iron pills. I also want to just e healthy & avoid fatty food

Eating with Coworkers Who don't know

I carry my protein shake all day long. For breakfast and lunch. For dinner, I am a vegetarian so it's rather easy for me to tell them I am going to eat back in the hotel. On business trip we usually book rooms with kitchens and I'll just cook some eggs etc.
  19. So...any advice? I'm leaning toward trying an ovo-lacto pescatarian diet. I'm six months post op next week. Meats sit ok on my tummy but I don't like how I feel on such a meat heavy diet. I can only hold so much food so I feel like I get mostly meat and very little veg and fruit. I miss my plant based foods! I love fish and it never gives me issues. I'm a little worried about protein intake. I've never done a diet like this before it just seems like it will make me feel good. I'm very accustomed to a low carb diet so this alone will raise the carbs I get just with the veggies and fruits. Any other vegetarian or pescatarian peeps post-vsg? I'd like to keep super processed foods to a minimum if possible. Sent from my Pixel 3 using BariatricPal mobile app

    NO TRACKING ?

Does your clinic want you to track it? Personally, I hate, like really hate, tracking food, it's inconvenient and annoying. My clinic wants me to eat 5 very small meals a day that are balanced, protein, carb, veg, and fruit. For me, I am still losing weight and my energy increased once I was able to have these other foods. My goal was to eat how "normal" people should be eating. I do struggle with real meat and raw veggies, my system still does not like them, so I eat a vegetarian diet and cook/steam all veggies. I have learned when to stop eating based on how I feel, I now know when one bite will be one bite too much, that is how I track. I just did my labs today for my 3-month check-up ( hit 3 months Jan 27) so I will see what my clinic has to say about my labs on Feb 12th and I will make adjustments from there if needed.

    Foods You Eat

I am 8 months out. At this point I am capable of eating just about anything except bread... bread hits me like a rock with anything more than a tiny bite. But I don't mind since I really was never a huge bread eater (pasta was my kryptonite...) My daily foods include -chicken -pork -ground meat (hamburger or turkey or sausage) -eggs -plain greek yogurt (with flavored syrups or splenda to sweeten, normally add Protein as well) -cheese! -tuna -shrimp -lunch meat -protein shakes I cook these in a variety of ways, but grilling (on my counter top grill) is my favorite. It is quick and since I have lots of experience with it I have no trouble timing it so that the meat comes out tender every time. With the ground meat I either eat it out of a bowl with cheese on top or I make meatballs of some sort. As you can tell... I am definitely NOT a vegetarian! LOL I also am not all that creative with it. But I like simple food the best so I'm not missing anything!

Anyone Wanna Do A 7-Day Paleo Challenge With Me?

This is not vegan, though, quite the opposite...I'd never do raw, either (well, non-vegan raw would be tough, anyway!). I generally find it impossible to go a single day without dairy or meat, so anything vegetarian, let alone vegan, was never on my list.

The Natural Diet Solution For PCOS.......

I understand that eating organic may not be embraced by all dietitians, but ultimately it's a personal decision. I do think that eating whole organic foods is better, but I know that everyone doesn't think the same as I. I have enjoyed reading this book and I feel that the authors are very educated and knowledgeable. I feel like I am making a good decision for me and that's all that counts. Not all professional dietitians are always going to agree on everything anyway, so I always read up on anything new and make my own decisions when it comes to my health. I've left out an entire food group before on certain diets (bread, meat) so that doesn't bother me at all. I've even thought about becoming a lacto-ovo vegetarian and that would be leaving out an entire food group also. I am not endorsing this book by any means, it's just something I want to try for myself............if it works for me, that's great, if it doesn't, so be it, I'll try something else. If I do not see results from this, I will probably become a lacto-ovo vegetarian and still try to eat whole organic foods when possible. I am still trying to find my way with my band and with PCOS, trying to figure out what works best for me. That being said, thanks for your concern and good luck to you.

Pre op diet over the holidays

I'm getting sleeved Dec. 31 and am hosting Christmas Eve at my house. My sisters offered to bring all the food (including some vegetarian options that I am allowed to have). I know it will be really hard to smell the ham and see the Desserts, but I feel like the pre-op diet is temporary and I can think about it that way. I certainly don't want to "fail" and not get the surgery! I think willpower can last two weeks. We will see!

can i eat meat or not?

Never heard of such a prohibition. I could eat soft ground meats and soft fish during my soft food stage after two weeks. Solid meat proteins are generally very important for bandster's satiety, but there's exceptions to every rule, particularly when it comes to band rules. I would probably investigate some band vegetarian menus for good ideas for non meat and filling meals.
