No protein shakes! Possible or no?

I hate them as well, but I have to use them in order to hit anywhere remotely close to the 90g/protein per day. I am a vegetarian though, so it's a bit more complicated for me than meat eaters (or so I'm told.) Right now I am drinking 1-2 a day still, but I want to stop drinking them asap. I could be wrong (and feel free to correct me, anybody, if so!) but I think you only really need them for the first couple weeks post-surgery, and then you can phase them out? There are other ways of getting protein as well besides shakes, like yogurts, quarks, even protein water.

    Jan 2019 bypass buddies

I started going out to eat 2 weeks ago. My rule of thumb is that I do NOT cook on Friday's. LOL My entire adult life, Friday night was dinner out or take out. So the first Friday I did that, I had crab stuffed flounder that was baked. It was so so tastewise, but my pouch loved it. Then last Friday, we ordered out for lunch. There is a place near here called "Zoup"...soups and sandwiches. I had Lobster Bisque. OMG it was the best thing I have eaten since my surgery. And then for dinner I had chicken pot pie. I really didn't like it very much, but my dog sure did when I brought him home the leftovers. LMAO Broccoli cheese soup has been a LIFESAVER to me. For whatever reason, the creamy soups have been the best texture wise and warmth for my pouch. For Panera, their vegetarian black bean soup is my fave!
  3. They have premier protien, Vega if you want vegetarian protein, and other powdered proteins. My husband just informed me they have isopure drinks in the vitamin section. They have awesome bone broth and vitamin water zero. Costco is my jam!

I can't wait to see the results! I also love your food choices. I'm vegetarian (have been since birth and I'm 49 now) - and they are really inspiring. Oh, I meant to ask... where do you buy hazelnut oil? I might have to try out the Braggs Amino acids - I haven't ever used it, I always use Marmite to make my dishes 'meaty'. I LOVE Marmite with a little butter on a Ryvita with cucumber on top. Yum.

Handmade Vegetarian eggrolls at the request of *someone* lol These things are massive because I'm lazy and didn't want to make 27384826385 of them that come in the pack. So I used two sheets per roll and stuffed them with about a cup of sauteed cabbage/carrot mix each. I pan fried them in a lightly oil skillet. No deep frying necessary. Success. I guesstimate they are around 200-300 cals each. Of course I tried one and it almost took me out of the game. Lol I had to split it between Iunch and dinner. The person I made it for could only eat one (with a bowl of homemade vegetarian Tonkotsu ramen) so they maybe big for regular gastro-anatomy folks too I could see these being stuffed with tons of great fillings.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I was vegetarian before surgery, so I think I'm having trouble with the high meat high dairy protein lifestyle. I was hoping to phase back in to vegetarianism, low-lacto after about 6 weeks or so, but man, the thought of pureed meat is really making me feel blugh. Guess I should try that ricotta bake everyone keeps talking about!
  8. I was ready to hear that i had to have around 60gr and that was fine with me, it's just that 100gr seems impossible fod me as a vegetarian, really. It's not that i'm not commited. It's that it doesn't sound realistic at all. Most vegetarians i know eat around 30 or 40, even the ones who've undergone the surgery.
  9. I'm vegetarian too. The number I was told was at least 65g of protein - which still seems like a lot. This last week I have been able to get over 100g consistently by pumping up my morning shake (I continue to do a protein shake for breakfast because I am not a breakfast person, and have been doing this for years). I use Fairlife milk which has more protein instead of regular skim, a scoop of my protein powder, and add a scoop of Genepro flavourless powder as well. That shake is really filling, and has a tonne of protein. It sets me up for the rest of the day. Anything I can, I add the Genepro to - Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, oatmeal, my bariatricpal chili and curry. The scoops are very small and it dissovles easily if you stir slowly. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K6OSDYA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 My nutritionist also said that it gets easier the further out you get and you don't need these massive amounts of protein forever. You will be able to tweak your macros as you get to maintenance to what works for you.

    Very upset after nutritionist appointment

I am also a vegetarian, and even though I'm at the stage where I can eat most regular foods, I am lucky to get 30 or 40 grams of protein per day because I can eat so very little despite the fact that many foods I can eat have plenty of protein. Most foods that I eat have anywhere from 7 to 24 grams of protein per 100g of food. Even so, I am struggling greatly to get what I need. My protein goal is supposed to be 90 grams of protein per day. I have a nutritionist appointment coming up in the middle of March, and I plan to speak to her about that because I don't know what to do. Sent from my SM-J330F using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. Protein is really important. I am sure that as a vegetarian it is still possible to get that much protein.
  12. She said i'll have to eat 100 grams of protein after surgery and this sounds like A LOT! No way i'll be able to do this! I feel like she has a problem with the fact that i'm a vegetarian. How do you guys eat after surgery? I hate this protein, protein, protein mentality.
  13. Iโ€™ll be hitting 5 months post op later this month. I havenโ€™t been active at all until this week but my weight loss has been steady (minus November, -6lbs that whole month smh). Labs were normal at my 4 month check up and my surgeon is happy with my progress. My next appointment is at 9 months post op and I canโ€™t imagine the changes that will happen between now and June. Also Iโ€™m down 72lbs since surgery so far. I donโ€™t eat much, actually Iโ€™m transitioning to vegetarianism because eating meat is no longer enjoyable to me. I guess this means I have to cook more. Iโ€™m currently training for a quarter marathon and I believe that this will help me reach onederland in 12 weeks. I have a half marathon in September and October, my first full marathon is in December. Goals: โ€œoverweightโ€ BMI at 6 months post Run more than I walk Complete โ€œinsanityโ€ workout Consume balanced high protein vegetarian meals Iโ€™m ready to crush it this year

Starting WLS journey as a vegan

Disclaimer: not a vegan. But I ate mostly vegan before surgery (even though I'm actually a pescatarian). I'm 3 months post-op. Make sure to tell your hospital that you're vegan. And make sure they understand. The hospital gave me broth and jello for every meal. They found me some vegetarian broth, but kept bringing the jello, insisting that I could eat it (even after I told them how its made). As for my diet post-op. I've never eaten any kind of jello post-op. I did have some sugar free popcicles, but I really didn't need them. I did a lot of broth with protein powder in the liquid phase. I highly recommend Millie's sipping broth - its vegan broth in tea bags. Really good. Pureed stage, I made a bunch of pureed beans and lentils and froze them in 1/4c servings. And veg - mostly spinach and sweet potatoes. I will say that I've had to eat a lot more dairy than I'd like post-op to get my protein in. I haven't thought through how I'd do it without dairy, but I bet it could be done. I do a lot of morningstar farms stuff. Check the protein content before you buy, some of their stuff has very little protein, while others are better. I still eat beans and lentils, but it takes a lot of those to get significant protein.

Starting WLS journey as a vegan

For when you get to the food stage.. my son is a vegetarian, I know it is a little different than a vegan, but if you have an Aldi near you, they have a brand called earth grown.. that has a lot of vegan items.. meatless meat.. I buy a lot of it for him and i have even tried it.. very tasty.

    โค JANUARY 2019 CHALLENGE โค

Look I'm not doing anything special. Four shakes and a meal. I've been making some simple but yummy vegetarian dinner (I know oxymoron right? ๐Ÿ˜‚) and I'm satisfied. I feel I owe a lot it to the protein I drink every hour from 2pm - 5pm, then dinner a 6. I don't feel weak or tired. I did in the beginning. I think that was from cutting sugar cold turkey. I don't feel like I when I was starving myself. I even have the energy to work out regularly. My recipe: Good quality protein isolate powder Water blender bottle Shake it. Twist it. Pull it. Bop it. (Nothing past shake it is necessary) Enjoy (plot twist, you won't!)

New here need info on the gastric sleeve

Hi there! This answer will vary from person to person, since our programs can vary wildly from what I've seen, but for me, I can tell you what I've had to do. Back in 2014, I considered the surgery then, but ended up backing out due to fear and anxiety, plus I had (and still have) other undiagnosed health issues which I figured would be only made worse from doing a surgery. Ultimately, years later, I decided to go through with it again, because my health is getting so bad that it's now incredibly difficult to get around or do anything that I want to. I can't even walk the dog without a great struggle. So I started the process last year, I believe sometime around August. I was required to lose a certain amount of weight before the surgery to prove I am committed, since here in Finland, most everything is paid for with very little cost to the patient. I did lose the weight and went through a period of waiting on a letter back from the surgeon confirming the surgery which was about 2.5 months. Then, I had to have an endoscopy to check the stomach and make sure there were no issues with it. That happened about three months back, as I recall. Then once more, I had to wait for another letter to arrive with my surgery time and date, which I received at the end of November. My surgery is scheduled for the 15th of January. Required from there is a 1 month pre-op diet (which I am on now) consisting of 5 special protein shakes per day (which are around 150 calories each, and each one counts as a full meal.) Aside from that, I am allowed a small amount of protein meat or meat substitute (or high protein cottage cheese or quark.) Also, up to 500g (or about a pound) of select vegetables that are not starchy. Additionally, I'm told to drink up to 2 liters of liquid a day, that should be mostly water (but can also be tea or coffee without cream or sugar as well as diet soda.) I have switched off soda completely now since I can't have it for a long time after surgery, and getting in the water has been.. incredibly difficult. [Just as an example, my typical pre-op meal is the 5 shakes spread out through the day with water in between. For my meal, I usually have anywhere from 75-100 grams (1/5th a pound roughly) of vegetarian 'meat' (it's called Mifu here in Finland, and is made of milk protein) along with 300 grams-ish (a little over half a pound) of some kind of steamed, boiled, or baked vegetable such as zucchini, cabbage and onions in broth, eggplant, carrots, etc.)] My surgery is about 9 days away now, so I'm quite nervous, and I have a last round of bloodworks on the day before to triple-check that everything is ready to go. Feel free to message me about anything you're interested in (or just reply here) and I'll answer what I can. Hopefully some people who have gone through the surgeries will respond, since I have yet to even go through mine!

Dietician Stuff...help me not be a jerk...

Not second guessing anyone. I also have a hernia and can't deal with dense, heavy fiber type foods without pain and gas. I bloat up like a blimp when I eat grains. This is no different than a vegan or a vegetarian. I've been on a specific diet for a long time and I want them to know about it.

I Was Amazed When I Heard This

True, true words. I went from food excesses to food repugnance, right now NOTHING sounds good, few things taste good, tried some still-GOOD-for - you foods recently, 2 teaspoons and I pushed it away. Part might be the fact that my TPN does fulfill my caloric needs, but I also promised I would try to eat by mouth once a day, and it is so hard. Maybe some shake, and I am tired so tired of them, maybe a little soup liquid or broth, don't suggest cottage cheese, or similar, anything with texture, up she comes, even if I try pureeing down vegetarian vegetable soup to an absolute liquid, Precious Pouch refuses, and after she is empty I continue dry heaving. Done it so much I have pinpoint hemmorages on my upper chest. You might think them age spots or freckles, nope, petechiae. So Carafate for my ulcers, Zofran for my nausea, miss one dose or don't get it on time, even what water I have recently drank comes back up, but dang it I am going to get better And then I will be amazing too!

    Grumpy Bat is Grumpy

Some people turn vegetarian for just that, the smell of meat repulses them, and that is quite a change. Mind you, we have had many on Bariatric Pal, many are lacto- ovo or pescetarian. But things may change still, that's a whole new world we are now living in now.

Drinking While Eating and Pouch Question

I understand completely. As long as you fully understand everything and are willing to live with the outcomes. I hounded my bedraggled team to the edge over protein levels and vegetarianism, using a straw and coffee. I've made my bed. Lol

    Bariatric Pal Store??? Non-whey options.

Thank you. I'm not vegetarian or vegan, I just get sick from whey proteins specifically. I can have milk/yogurt/etc totally fine... but when it's a whey shake... super nauseous. I use soy protein shakes. I've found a few things off the bariatricpal site that I've ordered, like the lentil curry and the sloppy joe mix. I did order the oatmeal, which I believe is whey, but sometime it's hit or miss so I'm going to give it a shot!
