Am I a 'recovered' morbidly obese person?
FluffyChix replied to TheRealMeIsHere!'s topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Congrats! That is fantastic and inspiring. I don't know that I can help you explain why. But my philosophy is that once we're obese, we're always gonna be "recovering obese". Why? Cuz we've got all those hungry hungry fat cells and internal hormones and thoughts and even guts that want to get us back to obesity. I think maintenance is something unique to each of us according to the amount of brokeness?? But you're basically keto which is a great way to maintain. And you have a carb up day/meal. NBD. Keeps you healthy. Glad you can enjoy fats!! -
Hell everyone 5yr out from Sleeve this month so frustrated gained 30lbs after Neck Surgery 2017 been on Keto lose 13lbs still struggling Ughh

A long post for a little reassurance
loli_lotus posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey all! Woah, I didn’t mean to make this so long, but I’m a rambler. This is my first post and I'm not sure if it belongs here, but it’s going here lol. I’ve been battling depression and obesity since I was a child. I hit 200lbs when I was 12, and although I was an active dancer in highschool and walked so so so much (my friends and I were mallrats with no cars) and saw a nutritionist in my junior and senior year, I was probably around 215 when I graduated. For a 5’2”, 17 year old girl, that was already morbidly obese and it just went up from there. I was definitely in survival mode for the next few years, on a few antidepressants, working and going to school, just trying to live. The earliest data I have from my FitBit and MyFitnessPal has be at 275lb in 2016, and I know I went up to the 290s in 2017, because 2017 is a blank on my trackers, and knowing me, I was too ashamed to record it. The next I have is 273 in 2018. I went off my antidepressants around the end of 2017, and while I was mentally “white-knuckling” it, I started losing weight. But it was very much a lose 10lbs, gain 15-20 cycle. Then my birth control made it worse. At the beginning of this year, I was stuck in a plateau of 231, and I talked to my doctor about my disordered eating, and she got me a therapist and I got myself a personal trainer. At that doctors appt, I almost asked for a referral for surgery, but chickened out and asked for a therapist and a nutritionist instead. Love my therapist, but the nutritionist wanted me on a 1200 cal diet that didn't mesh with disordered eating at all. An important note here, is that my mother, who has passed, had the RYGB circa 2002. So surgery has always been in the back of my mind. After a series of unfortunate events in March, I lost 10lbs rapidly and realized my bmi (40) was at the cut off for surgery with no comorbidities. At the beginning of April I asked my doctor for a surgery referral. She offered me Wegovy or Saxenda, but I really can’t see myself using injectables for the rest of my life, so she went ahead with the referral. Had the first consultation a little over a week later, did a few zoom classes, completed forms, did the psych eval (actually awful), and today I got an email saying my insurance approved me and my program would contact me soon for a date. My reasoning is that I see my trainer twice a week and my therapist and I are working on my relationship with food, but I’m getting older and I have that historic lose/gain cycle, and my weight has been a source of unhappiness literally my entire life. Surgery isn’t going to fix everything, I know that, I’ve talked to my therapist about that, but she and I agree this would be a great tool for me in conjunction with the other changes I’m making. My trainer, who is a family friend, doesn’t like the idea. But she’s only known me as an adult, she doesn’t see that a lifetime of yo-yo dieting and trying to stay active isn’t cutting it when I’m still carrying an extra 100lbs. A close member of my family wants me to do keto again, because that was my biggest diet win, but that also didn’t mesh with my disordered eating in the long run. Since my consult, I’ve lost about another 6lbs, firmly putting me where I was when I was a teenager, which is a surreal feeling, but it’s being used as proof that I can “do it on my own.” Honestly, my mindset is that I’m eating less in preparation for surgery. There’s been memes shared on instagram stories of people who I know must know I want to get wls done, calling the surgery “body mutilation” and how “surgeons regret performing bariatric surgeries because it's unnatural.” It makes me doubt myself, like is this just my depression wanting to “mutilate” myself, or is this me trying to overcome my depression and finally do something for myself? What was it for my mother? I was too young to ask her these questions and now I can't. This is a very long post to ask; I’m doing the right thing, right? Am I being rational and making sense? I know I can lose the weight, but keeping it off is constantly clawing and if I slip now just a little, the lose/gain cycle could catch up, and I'm so tired of it. -
Need lap band removed revising to Gastric Bypass
Sunnyway replied to MelissaWisconsin's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have not had lap band but I have had two prior bariatric surgeries that failed. I am now going to have RNY Gastric Bypass revision at age 73. I have learned a lot since I started on this path 6 months ago. Good for you for moving forward toward a healthy weight. However, I'm concerned that you have not learned how to eat differently yet. Consider the possibility that you are a sugar/food addict. If you are, Keto is not the answer for you. You need to change your habits entirely. I strongly recommend some reading for you. Choose at least one book from each of these groups. Finally, conclude with Success Habits of Weight Loss Patients. Get started now. Apparently you have already had the surgery, so there is no time to be lost. -
AMAW/CAMAW - Let's do this thang!
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
breakfast this morning on Day 1. Or should I say Brunch, cuz I just ate it. Turned out to be one of my Psylli Egg McBiscuits The biscuits are one of my creations and are totes legal for CAMAW! Warning this biscuit is a total gut bomb. You have to have ZERO swallowing issues and be fully hydrated BEFORE eating it! I used different ingredients for this one, but you can read the cooking instructions here on my old - now defunct blog. http://fluffychixcook.com/egg-fast-breakfast-biscuit-low-carb-keto-breakfast-yum/ -
What do non-cooks eat in the 4th month?
Candace76 replied to Amy Braun's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Hi Amy, Since the surgery, I have found that I like to have easy meals ready to grab. I do enjoy cooking, though, too. For breakfast, I often have a protein shake or yogurt with protein (oikos triple zero or light & fit). Sometimes, I may have oatmeal (can add protein powder, there are some brand that have it added), frozen lower carb or keto waffles with protein & sugar-free syrup, or low carb/keto bread with cheese or egg. You can find cooked hard boiled eggs in dairy section. There are also those "just crack an egg" microwave meals (I haven't tried them). For easy lunches I often have yogurt, Oscar Mayer P3 snacks or Sargento Balanced breaks, 1/2 sandwich with low carb bread turkey & low fat cheese. (I don't know if you are ready to eat nuts, yet, I know they need to be chewed well & controlled portion sizes) An easy dinner I found was a frozen pizza made with a chicken based crust. There are some frozen keto meals i have seen, but haven't tried. Other easy items are: frozen cooked shrimp, cooked grilled chicken from supermarkets deli, & microwave riced cauliflower. I hope you get some ideas. I am always looking for new foods to incorporate into my routine, too. -

What is keto? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Keto is high fat, low carb moderate protein. My daily macros look kind of like this... 25 g Carbs (9%, 100 kcal) 110 g Protein (41%, 440 kcal) 59 g Fat (50%, 528 kcal) I don't usually get that much fat in but I try, I always hit my protein goal. I very rarely have more than 15 net carbs in a day. I find is almost impossible to get a lot of carbs in, veggies don't really have them, and I don't eat other things, just meat and veggies. -
I violate thermodynamics and it's crap

I sort of weigh my food. Mostly I get food in a known weight quantity and eat a known fraction of it. So, if I get a pound of pork tenderloin, and cut it evenly into quarters, each is roughly a quarter pound. I'm at least eating an accurate weight over a few meals. I probably need to get a food scale, but I've always balked at that because it feels a bit obsessive and sucks the fun out of meals a bit. I might still try. I do keep track of calories and macros on MyFitnessPal. I tend to do pretty well, though anytime I ever dare to have a sandwich I kick myself because bread is so dang caloriffic. I try to eat mostly meat dishes, skipping the bread and pasta and such. I'm not keto, though. (If I were keto, I'd totally weigh like 10 pounds less, though honestly it doesn't make a single difference in my inches it seems.) Yeah, I definitely need a new scale. This one is screwy. I've been procrastinating lol. Yup, I've had my thyroid tested like five times over the past five years. Keeps coming back "fine, not quite low." I did go on Synthroid once and it made no difference, so it was discontinued. I'm eating 1000-1200 calories a day, with occasional mistakes. I know I'm not perfect, but I'm doing my best. My guess is I need to have more NEAT (non-workout exercise, basically), but I have a sit-down computer job, and when I get interrupted, it's hard to focus. That puts a bit of a damper on walking around a lot. >< I'm trying, at least, and my clothes fit some better. Notably, I don't get food cravings nearly so much. I used to be the sort of person who could never eat just a couple pieces of chocolate -- I'd eat the whole bag, so I had to never keep sweets in my house whatsoever. Now, I can actually do stuff in moderation. I also don't eat when I'm bored almost at all anymore, and I don't get random sugar cravings every day. I don't get nearly as hangry, though now I get physical stomach pains from being hungry if I don't keep up with meals. I'm guessing this is a hormonal change from part of my stomach having atrophied due to being folded up and unusable. -
Keto Diet with weight loss surgery - What are your thoughts about it?

The Ketovangelist way of keto doesn't have you mind your calories in that way. Check this link out https://www.ketovangelist.com/the-calorie-hypothesis/ Calories are more of a guide to make sure you don't drop below your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure). Most folks do well taking an average of their BMR and maintenance calories and using that number as a guide to create their macros. Here's an excellent TDEE calculator https://tdeecalculator.net/ (just don't let it make your macros - it's WAY off) Constantly eating below your BMR causes stalls and gains so that happy medium between your BMR and maintenance seems to prevent that and keep you burning fat and sparing muscle. Have you found an FB group for bariatric folks doing keto? There has to be one. I'm not sure how pre-op keto will translate to post-op since most post-op folks are eating low fat. I'm sure I'll eventually be seeking out a group. Let me know if you find one you like. -

Do you use a blood meter to check your ketone level by chance? I'm curious what hardcore ketosis looks like post-op vs. pre-op just eating keto. Currently I keep my ketones at about 1.7 - 2.0 mmol and it is VERY hard to keep this up. To measure blood ketones I have a KetoMojo meter. -
Yes, I am pre-op. The weight I've lost was a result of 2 years strict keto....you probably saw that in my other post. I don't believe there's a set expectation for weight loss. The lady at my surgeon's office said with the meds, they expect me to lose approx. 25lbs which should put my BMI around 38.5. I gained a good 5lbs during the holidays which they're unaware of. I can lose 13.5lbs at this point and be right at a BMI of 40. I just need to get to that appointment and find out what they're wanting me to take. I'm guessing it's phentermine which I highly doubt will effect me since I used to pop Adderall like Skittles. No matter what, I'm going to make sure this surgery happens...

I had bypass 22 months ago. I have never been able to eat high amounts of fat, even before surgery. A keto diet would kill me for sure! But since surgery, fat tolerance was even less at first. I have gradually been able to add more fat into my diet, but fat malabsorption has been evident since the beginning. It was most noticeable by light colored stools that float. They are more normal colored now, but still "floaties." I think I eat a lot of fat in the nuts, peanut butter, and seeds I consume, along with a small avocado nearly every day. But I find myself sort of craving fat sometimes. However, even when I try to eat more of it, I think it just goes right on through. My fat soluble vitamin levels have always been fine, and I will have those tested again in February. I am also going to talk to the Dietician about this, because if I crave fat, that must mean I am not absorbing what my body needs. That is the only malabsorption issue I think I have had with the bypass.

My husband started the KETO DIET even went thru a girl that does a month of food to prepare for the week. He really didn' like it. He said that it all tasted the same and in 2 weeks he was out of there. But he did lose like 12#'s in a week. He has had WLS. I couldn't stand the smell. But that is just me. I really think that it will work. But just like everything else you need to work for it. Good Luck -

@SteveT74 You're my kinda dude! You have this keto thing down! Way to go! You're right though...from my time on here and hearing what other have to say, I sounds like eating true keto with bypass might be harder to pull off considering the diet requires you eat high fat and moderate protein. Who knows though? I think if you can eat at least eat a 1:1 fat/protein ratio you'll be good. I sure as heck will try when the time comes! You're also right about pee sticks. They're worthless. If you're peeing out ketones, your body isn't using them for energy. Also, if you're dehydrated you will pee ketones so they're not reliable at all. When it comes to measuring what your body is creating itself and using for energy, it's going to be blood ketones. Pee sticks may be good for diabetics or something, but if you're going to eat a true ketonian diet, get a KetoMojo meter to test your blood. It's an excellent investment and easy to use. We need to keep in touch -
My nutritionist recommends 40-80g net carb per day at the nutrition class. I think that might be once you're on regular food again. I am very carb sensitive so this is fine with me. I spent months counting calories pre op and lost nothing until I started following the carb guidelines. I've only ever lost weight on keto or atkins so it's not a shock. My surgery is a month away and I've lost 7 pounds this last week from 297 to 290 staying below 50 g of carbs and 1200 calories. I got down from my highest weight of 315 to 265 on low carb but regained back to 297 after spending months on prednisone for rhuematoid arthritis last year

I'm the same way. Total agreement. We've been LC (I don't even refer to it as keto) for so dang long, it's just the way we eat. And I love our lean protein and veg and a tiny bit of fruit/nuts/seeds. Mr. F. feels the same way! The more meat I let myself eat, the hungrier I get btw. For me, meat is insulinogenic and can wake up my hunger. So I'm better off if I just bargain with my bad self to eat only my 3oz portion and shut up about it! -

How about treating myself while on keto diet with diet pepsi or diet rootbeer. Have always drank it before with sleeve. I see mixed reviews, all say "legally" it passes because it has no sugar, 50% say they do it, 50% say they feel the sugar substitute will confuse system MAYBE taking you out of keto temporarily... Any knowledge on this? Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app -
I am having surgery on monday 2/8. I am so nervous. I had my second dose of covid vaccine and got so sick. I could not tolerate any protein because I was so sick. I ended up drinking ginger ale and had crackers along with other non-keto items. I am so frustrated because I am 3 days before my surgery and I was supposed to loose 5 pounds. I don't think that is going to happen. super frustrated!

I am almost 3 months out from my sleeve and have lost 50 lbs which I am good with but still struggle with getting all of my protein in so I have started following the ketogenic diet. Anyone else tried this? Thoughts? Results?
